Don't judge this book by its cover: Tina Gardiner, ownerof Tina's Golden Comb, on the surface is a powerful dynamo, packed full of energy and kindness. But brewing just beneath her surface is even more, just waiting to come out. To prepare for this story I lookedat what people wrote on her business Facebook wall.“Hey Tina, I miss you and your great energy!” “OMGare you ever going to start to age?” and “...I am remin-ded of your fantastic community minded spirit...You arean inspiration!” But wait, there is more in person.
Why did she chose to be a hair dresser? She liked doingit. She was good at it. She needed a job. Tina appliedwith Mike Martin of Kami Hair Studio and found outshe still needed to apprentice. Mike thought she wouldonly last a week due to her diminutive size compared tothe others. She did almost quit due to sore hands andaching feet and a comfortable job offer as a secretary,but because she could not give proper notice to Mikeshe stuck it out. After she got her license, putting in longhours with little reward and she decided to open Tina'sGolden Comb.
Don't be looking for a Golden Comb in Tina's handsthough. Something way better is found. Tina's employesthe Golden Rule. Each of her clients are treated like afriend. None are judged better than another. Her employees, which have ranged in number from as highas 17 to the current 8, have learned from Tina how togive the best service to everyone. Her employees arealso encouraged to work as a team, if your regular isbusy, take another and still chat with your regular one.They also consult with each other, so you know you aregetting the best treatment they collectively can offer.Tina encourages the team to stay current on techniques,only uses the best in products, attend the latest shows,and keep current on product knowledge.
A few years back Tina was seriously ill with UlcerativeColitis in the hospital. She was raising her three children alone and definitely didn't want to leave them.Determination? she made sure that she looked goodeveryday and worked her way back to health! And educated herself on herbal treatments and medicine.When you sit in her chair and she asks, “How are you?”rest assured she'll have some ideas to help you. She offers the best in massage, tanning, pedicure and mani-cures, ionic cleansing, therapy bed and tub, and educa-tion.
What is her motivation to keep going now? “I love myclients, what I can offer them, that my staff is learningand copying me. I love the open concept of my currentlocation, every square foot of my design. I still have myoriginal chairs, stations, and mirrors. I can pull peopleout of their groove and make them look and feel great.”She has an extensive range of ages of repeat clientele.Some have been coming since she opened 28 years ago.
The future is already brewing in her mind. Already shehas a notebook full of ideas and contacts. She wants todo something with bored teens and bored seniors. With her community involvement and charity work experience, she has a spark of things to come. “I wantto live to 113!”
