I met with Robin and Harvey of H&R Janitorial Cleaning Supplies recently. Theyhave a nice, clean business of janitorial supplies in the City Center Unit 51 on PittStreet between 9th and 8th. Both men were long time Domtar employees, and friendsfrom high school. After working for many years at Domtar, they began business Jan1, 2008. Both Robin and Harvey had worked long weekend hours for Kenny, the pre-vious owner, as High school students, and they bought the business from him. Theychanged the business from just commercial clients and now welcome residentialclients, too. They pride themselves on the quality of the products they carry and theservice they provide.

Harvey took a few financial courses after Domtar and he has a good sense of moneymatters. He can help you decide which products make the most sense for your situa-tion. For example, I found out a couple of things that are worth knowing and passingon to you. First, 3 ply toilet paper isn't friendly to anyone's sewer or septic system.That extra layer or two of comfort for one's bottom doesn't break down quickly whenflushed. Once a piece of three-ply gets snagged on a rough edge in the sewer, moreclings to it and then the whole sewer line is blocked, meaning costly repairs andmajor inconveniences. H&R have a good selection of toilet paper, 2 ply and singleply that won't plug up your lines. Second, the cost of toilet paper can be deceiving.What might look like a bargain may not be. Unless you compare the cost to the num-ber of sheets per roll and rolls per package you are not really comparing prices.A casemay seem like a lot of money up front, but it can be months before you need more.

Pets in residenceMany nursing homes have taken this information to heart. For years now, thoroughlyvaccinated, groomed, and behavior-tested animals have been taken into hospitals,hospices, and assisted living homes to give seniors a chance to pet and play withthem. More recently, some resident homes have even begun letting animals live inthe home full time. One particular stroke patient was withdrawn and rarely smiled,until she began to play with the resident cat. The patient and the cat became closelybonded to each other, and when the cat had kittens, they became like the patient’s ba-bies. The kittens played and slept on a tray on the resident’s wheelchair and slept ina chair near her bed whenever they could. The kittens brought the resident out of hershell and she began to talk and smile. The kittens in particular get all the residents’attention. The residents always wanted to know where they were and what they weredoing.When there were kittens in the building, a number of residents stayed busy allday, following them, playing with them, and keeping an eye on them.

Finding that furry friendIt is often a good idea to pick out older pets that may not require as much energy totake care of them. Puppies and kittens can be destructive and more responsibilitythan the person can handle. They may fall in love with a dog or cat that might neverhave caught your eye.

Finally, before you encourage an older person to adopt a pet, consider whether youcould take care of the animal if its owner is no longer able. Often, if seniors reach thepoint where they have to leave their homes and move into assisted-living facilities,they also have to give up their pets. The number of nursing homes and other types ofhousing for the elderly that will accept animals is growing, but the vast majorities stilldon’t allow pets. Seniors can plan ahead and find a pet-friendly nursing facility, justin case they need to use it someday.

Pets and the elderly have a lot to give to each other. Though pets can’t replace humanrelationships for seniors, they can certainly augment them, and they can fill an olderperson’s life with years of constant, unconditional love.

Pets For Senior CitizensYou’ve probably noticed that when you pet a soft, warm cat or play fetch with a dogwhose tail won’t stop wagging, you relax and your heart feels a little warmer. In fact,pets may help elderly owners live longer, healthier, and more enjoyable lives.

Studies have shown that independently living seniors that have pets tend to have bet-ter physical health and mental wellbeing than those that don’t. They’re more active,cope better with stress, and have better overall health. The same studies have shownthat elderly pet owners had significantly lower blood pressure overall than theircontemporaries without pets.

How do they do it?First of all, pets need walking, feeding, grooming, fresh water, and fresh kitty litter,and they encourage lots of playing and petting. All of these activities require someaction from owners. Even if it’s just getting up to let a dog out a few times a day orbrushing a cat, any activity can benefit the cardiovascular system and help keep jointslimber and flexible. Consistently performing this kind of minor exercise can keeppet owners able to carry out the normal activities of daily living. Pets may also aidseniors simply by providing some physical contact. When people pet animals, theirblood pressure, heart rate, and temperature decrease. The responsibility of caring foran animal may also give the elderly a sense of purpose, a reason to get up in the mor-ning. Pets also help seniors stick to regular routines of getting up in the morning,buying groceries, and going outside, which help motivate them to eat and sleep re-gularly and well.

vehiclesBattery-electric vehicles: Battery-electric vehicles are

as safe as electrical appliances. Their fire safety is veryhigh. Commercial vehicles are built to normal vehicle safe-ty standards of crashworthiness.

Hybrid electric vehicles: Hybrid electric vehicles(HEVs) are as safe – or safer than – gasoline-powered vehi-cles. The battery packs are sealed in carbon compositecases. High-voltage circuits are marked, colour-coded andposted with warnings to advise of their presence.Commercial vehicles are built to normal vehicle safetystandards of crashworthiness.

Vehicle performance: Battery-electric vehiclesThe driving range of battery-electric vehicles depends on

their battery type. Conventional lead-acid batteries cantravel from 50 to 100 kilometres. More advanced batteries,such as nickel metal-hydride and lithium ion, have drivingranges of about 200 kilometres. The batteries must berecharged often, which takes up to eight hours each time,compared with the few minutes needed to fill up with gaso-line.

Batteries are still heavy and bulky, which limits vehicleacceleration and top speed. More advanced batteries, how-ever, can improve performance.

One of the big benefits of electric vehicles is that they arevery quiet.

Hybrid electric vehiclesHEVs use less gasoline than conventional vehicles do,

thanks to their battery power and regenerative breaking.Fuel consumption can be reduced by 50 percent or more.That means their driving range is farther than that of reg-ular gasoline vehicles.

When HEVs operate on electric power, they are veryquiet. On-board computers coordinate any shifts, depend-ing on driving conditions, between the gas engine and theelectric motor.

— AIR BAG SWITCH —An air bag on-off switch overrides the automatic deploy-

ment function of vehicle airbags and can be installed forthe driver, passenger, or both. To operate the switch, a spe-cial key is required to reduce the chances of misuse. Whenthe air bag is turned off, a light appears stating DRIVERAIR BAG OFF or PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF. The air bagremains deactivated until the key is used to turn the sys-tem back on. An air bag on-off switch allows an air bag tobe turned off for special circumstances. Some scenarioswhere air bag deployments may be risky include:

• When absolutely essential to transport infants ridingin rear-facing infant seats in the front passenger seat.

• When absolutely essential to transport children ages 1to 12 in the front passenger seat.

• When drivers cannot change their customary driving

position and keep 25 centimetres between the centre of thesteering wheel and the centre of their breastbone.

• For people whose doctors claim that because of a med-ical condition, an air bag poses a special risk that exceedsthe risk of hitting their head, neck or chest in a crashwhen the air bag is turned off. MaintenanceTips/Suggestions: Deactivating your air bag will not bene-fit you or other users of your vehicle. Instead, it willincrease the risk that you and the other users will suffer ahead, neck or chest injury by violently striking the steer-ing wheel or dashboard in a moderate to severe crash. Theinstallation and use of an air bag switch is only allowedunder the above conditions and should be performed by atrained service professional. Not all repair facilities installair bag switches.
