I t i s typically exposed a s a m e d i u m to l i g h t g r a y , 2 0 - 5 0 c m (7.9-19.7 =in*), c l i f f - a n d r i d g e - f o r m i n g , h a r d , dense limestone t h a t is a d i s t i n c t g r a y- b l a c k t o d a r k gray i n c o l o r on the fresh s u r f a c e , I t i s c u r r e n t l y i n t e r p r e t e d a s b e i n g l a r g l e y d i s t a l siliclastic and c a r b o n a t e turbidites i n a p r o b a b l y q u i t e d e e p , possibly r e s t r i c t e d mar ine b a s i n ( S e t r a , 1 9 7 6 ) . T h e Las C r u c e s F o r m a t i o n i s s p a r s e l y fossiliferous; h o w e v e r , b r a c h i o p o d s , c r i n o i d a n d e c h i n o i d f r a g m e n t s h a v e been observed a n d a b u n d a n t s p o n g e s p i c u l e s a n d minor r a d i o l a r i a n s a n d silicified o s t r a c o d s , t e t r a c u r a h , c r i n o i d s , and ques t i o n a b l e h o l o t h u r o i d scl e r i t e s h a v e b e e n r e c o v e r e d f r o m insoluble r e s i d u e s ( S e t r a , 1 9 7 6 ) .

T h i s u n i t i s very p o o r l y exposed t h r o u g h o u t t h e r a n g e and disconformably underlies t h e Las C r u c e s F o r m a t i o n .
