EL ENTORNO /THE SURROUNDINGSLa Regin Lima est ubicada en la parte central y occidental del territorio peruano.Comprende una franja costera al oeste, mayormente desrtica, y al este, limita con losAndes. Lima region is located in the central and western part of the Peruvian territory. Itis a coastal strip, mostly desert, to the West and limits with the Andes to the East.In fact, some Andean buttresses reach to the coast, which explains the presence ofislands, islets and high cliffs near the coastline. However, its geography is mostlyrugged and Andean. The nine rivers that cross the region form canyons that turninto wide and fertile valleys as they make their way into the coastal desert. Thebasins of the Chillon, Rimac and Lurin rivers are the main suppliers of water toMetropolitan Lima, as rain is extremely low in the area. On the other hand, the coastis affected by the Humboldt Current, a cold ocean current that creates the perfectecosystem for a diverse marine life and determines the weather of the entire region.

Lima has a mild weather, withhigh atmospheric humidity in thecoastal area (especially duringwinter). The Andean regionfeatures all the ecosystems typicalof high tropical mountains: fromwarm valleys to the glacial cold.

However, if we want to referto organized communities, we can go back 4000 years and mention a society thatoccupied a territory located between rivers of Chillon, to the north, Rmac, on thecenter, and Lurin, to the south. 2/Las lomas son un ecosistema tpico de la costa peruana, con una presencia importanteen las zonas perifricas de Lima. Vistas desde lo alto son como enormes oasis de vidaque contrastan con la aridez del desierto. Lamentablemente, las lomas estn en riesgode desaparecer debido a la presin urbana, la explotacin minera y la contaminacinambiental. Sin embargo, existen iniciativas para proteger estos reductos ecolgicos ri-cos en biodiversidad, dado su gran potencial para la recreacin y el turismo, as comofuente de conocimiento y recursos.

The hills are an ecosystem that is typical of the Peruvian coast and can be found inthe periphery of Lima. Seen from above, they are like huge oasis of life against thedryness of the desert. En el caso de Lima, los humedales coexisten con la zonas urbanas, razn porla cual se encuentran en permanente riesgo. Conservarlos y protegerlos es una tareaimperiosa, ya que tienen un rol muy importante en el equilibrio ecolgico de la zonacostera.

Wetlands are an ecosystem that is present throughout the Peruvian desert coast. InLima, wetlands coexist with the urban areas, which is why they are under constantrisk of disappearing. It is urgent to preserve and protect them, since they play a veryimportant role in the ecological balance of the coast.

Hastaque en 2010 esta informacin lleg a odos del PhDMarino Morikawa, un joven cientco peruano quereside en Japn, y que pas su infancia en estehumedal de Chancay. Decidido a impedir su des-truccin, este joven investigador de la Universidadde Tsukuba volvi al Per y form el grupo Cas-cajo Team, con el cual, luego de varias sesionesde limpieza, logr su objetivo: salvar el humedal,descontaminarlo y convertirlo nuevamente en unazona de vida silvestre. Su historia ha sido incluidaen un documental de la National Geographic.

This wetland, located in Chancay, North of Lima,was, for many years, an ecological paradise.However, the urban growth of the area turnedit into a landll that was about to be urbanized.In 2010, PhD Marino Morikawa, a youngPeruvian scientist living in Japan, heard aboutthis situation. Marino had spent his childhoodin Chancays wetlands. Determined to stopits destruction, the young researcher fromTsukuba University came back to Peru and

HUMEDALES DEL CALLAO /EL CALLAO WETLANDSEn la Provincia Constitucional del Callao se puedevisitar dos humedales. El de Ventanilla, ubica-do al norte de la provincia, tiene un rea de 500hectreas y es el hbitat de aves residentes y,ocasionalmente, migratorias. Este ecosistema fuedeclarado rea Natural Protegida en 2006, y entrelas especies que se pueden observar se encuen-tran el pato gargantilla, el pato colorado, la garzablanca grande, la garza azul, la garza tricolor, lagaviota gris, el playero manchado, entre otras. Enel distrito de La Punta, por otro lado, tambin seencuentra el humedal de La Arenilla, que se pue-de observar desde el malecn Wiesse y desde elMirador.

4/Los Pantanos de Villa constituyen un rea Natural Protegida que se ubica en plenazona urbana. Estos pantanos administrados por Serpar acogen totorales y lagunas for-mados por aguas subterrneas que aoran en una depresin natural. Destino obligadopara los amantes de la observacin de aves, este humedal fue reconocido como Refu-gio de Vida Silvestre el 2006, y tambin por la Convencin Relativa a los Humedales deImportancia Internacional (RAMSAR). Actualmente, sirve como espacio de recreacine investigacin, as como para nes tursticos y sociales.

Pantanos de Villa (or Villas Swamps) is a natural protected area located in the middleof the city. The swamps, managed by Serpar. are made oftotorales (bulrushes) andponds formed by underground waters that surface due to a natural depression. Amust-visit for bird watchers, the wetland was recognized as a Wildlife Refuge in 2006and by the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especiallyas Waterfowl Habitat. It currently acts as a recreational and research area, as well asfor touristic and social activities.

TURISMO /TURISMEl principal atractivo de los Pantanos de Villa es lavariedad de aves que se puede observar en ellos ms de 200 especies, de las cuales hay dos tipos:residentes y migratorias. Tambin se pueden rea-lizar caminatas y paseos en bote, en cualquiera delos tres circuitos preestablecidos. En la poca deverano se puede llegar a ver ms de 15.000 avesen la zona.

The main attraction of the Pantanos de Villais, without a doubt, the diversity of birds in thearea over 200 species -, both resident andmigratory. It is also possible to take walks andboat rides in any of the three established circuits.In summertime, it is possible to see over 15,000birds in the area.
