The National Secretariat for Immigrant Affairs of Ecuador (SENAMI) was created in2007 in order to focus on the countrys large migrant population abroad, and to serve

foreign migrants residing on Ecuadorian soil. As part of this effort, SENAMI has set upa network of agencies in different cities around the world to provide vital services toEcuadorian migrants. The Casas Ecuatorianas cooperate with embassies and consu-lates to bring the governments programs and projects to Ecuadorians abroad, with theultimate goal of protecting the rights of migrants living abroad and helping them im-prove their quality of life. The Casas Ecuatorianas are also spaces which helpstrengthen national identity and the links among Ecuadorians abroad, and Ecuadoriansabroad and their home. Casa Ecuatoriana NY offers many services, including but notlimited to: free legal counsel on migration-related issues; information about theWelcome Home Plan; free ESL, computer, and GED classes; events to promote Ecua-dorian culture; comprehensive assistance to those in vulnerable situations; and re-search and events on migratory policy.

    TheabsoluteandrelativenumbersofEcuadorianswhowerebornintheUnitedStatesincreasedsteadilyafter1980,althoughongoingmigrationfromEcuadormeantthattheEcuadorian-bornper-

    throughnaturalization.Dataindicatethatafter2000thisprocessintensified,perhapsbecauseoftheexplicitlyanti-immigrantpoliticalsentimentswhichhavelamentablysweptthenation,especiallyaftertheeconomicdownturnof2006-2008.AbouthalfofthetotalnumberofnaturalizedEcuadoriansaf-ter1950receivedU.S.citizenshipbetween2000and2008.(Seefigure4).Additionallydataareavailablebetween2000and2009onthenumberofEcuadoriansseeking
