The rankings, compiled by Forbes, were released last week and included actors working outside Hollywood, allowing an international comparison of star earnings for the first time.

That change also meant Hong Kong martial arts darling Jackie Chan was 2nd placed, with most of his $50 million in earnings last year made from films produced in China. American actor Robert Downey Jr. topped the list for the third year in a row, earning $80 million in 2014. The two highest-paid Indian actors, Khan and Bachchan, tied for 7th, each earning $33.5 million last year.

“I am surprised it has taken so long” to get global rank-ings, said Bollywood publicist Raju Kariya, who has worked in the industry for more than 30 years. India’s male actors, easily recognizable by their aviator sunglasses and tight designer clothes, are so popu-lar that “everyone from 5-year-olds to elderly aunties are completely gaga over them.”

Khan’s place also demonstrated that Bollywood stars can get through scandal relatively unscathed. The action hero is the subject of nonstop media attention amid an ongoing court case for a 2002 hit-and-run that killed a homeless man and injured four others. His popularity also hasn’t suffered from his 2006 conviction for poaching an endangered blackbuck deer, which he has appealed.

Even though the top Bol-lywood hunks are raking in cash, the earnings of Hindi-language films are languish-ing. Bollywood is the world’s most prolific producer of

films, churning out some 1,000 year, double that of Holly-wood. Yet so far this year, only half a dozen or so Bollywood films have turned a profit, while most of the hundreds that come out of Mumbai’s film industry are money losers.

As India’s economy grows and the middle class expands, more people are buying theater tickets and the number of movie theaters has increased. But Bollywood is facing increased pressure from imported films.

The competition, particularly from Hollywood, is mak-ing India moviegoers more demanding and discerning, said film trade analyst Vinod Mirani. “Movies are actually get-ting worse” as money-making vehicles in India, he said.

Up until the 1990s, film in India was usually financed by politicians and criminals. The industry has since modern-ized with financing coming from major companies. Foreign production houses Sony Pictures, The Walt Disney Co. and Universal Studios have also opened office in India. Reliance MediaWorks Ltd., owned by one of India’s richest tycoons, Anil Ambani, sold off its entire multiplex business, Big Cinemas, to UK’s Carnival Films Pvt. Ltd. last year for more than $100 million.

Altogether, the five Bollywood stars made Indians the second-highest paid as a group, with combined earnings of $140.5 million.

Salman Khan, for example, grossed more than $20 million just from his ‘Being Human’ clothing line last year, while Bachchan endorses more than a dozen products ranging from soft drinks to household paint.

Bachchan, 72, who is so popular there is even a temple dedicated to him in the eastern city of Kolkata, was the oldest actor on the list, beating out his 63-year-old Irish colleague Liam Neeson,

who made $19.5 million last year to land in 22nd place on the list.

The third-highest ranked Bollywood actor was an-

other action hero, Ku-mar, with earnings of $32.5 million last year putting him in the 9th spot.

Lower on the list of 34 actors was Shah Rukh Khan, in 18th place, and

Ranbir Kapoor, at No. 30. (ap)

NEW YORK — Howard Stern has revealed details about the secret wedding between Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, including that Jimmy Kimmel officiated.

Stern was a guest at the Los An-geles ceremony last Wednesday that Aniston and Theroux disguised as a birthday bash for Theroux. Stern said on his radio show Monday that he knew beforehand that it was a wedding because the couple asked him to give a speech.

But Stern said the affair was extremely secretive and that guests had to hand over their phones. He said Kimmel did “a beautiful job” officiating, and that Sia performed.

Other guests, he said, included Ellen DeGeneres, Whitney Cum-mings and Orlando Bloom.

The marriage is the second for 46-year-old Aniston, who got divorced from Brad Pitt in 2005, and the first for 44-year-old Ther-oux. (ap)

Bollywood hunks and heroes among the

world’s top paid actorsNEW DELHI — Bollywood films, with their

colorful sets and hyper-coordinated song-and-dance numbers, have catapulted five Indians into the ranks of the world’s highest paid male actors. Three of those actors— Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar — were in the top 10, outranking Hollywood A-listers such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio.

NEW YORK — Erik Larson’s “The Devil in the White City” is finally headed to the big screen, with Martin Scorsese directing and Leonardo DiCaprio starring in it.

Paramount Pictures confirmed Monday that it has optioned Lar-son’s best-seller. The screenplay will be adapted by Billy Ray, who scripted “Captain Phillips” and “The Hunger Games.”

The film marks the sixth feature together for Scorsese and DiCaprio, who last joined for “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Published in 2003, Larson’s nonfic-tion book is about the architect of Chi-cago’s 1893 World’s Fair and a serial killer who used the fair as a setting for his murders. The book has long been a hot property in Hollywood, particu-larly pursued by DiCaprio. (ap)

Bluhu hamlet residents came with buckets and jerry cans in hand to wait for the water tank truck to arrive. After an hour of wait-ing they filled their containers to maximum capacity.

Head of the Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency, I Wayan Karmawan, said that Bluhu hamlet is just one of several hamlets that is dealing with a water crisis. Many residents rely on rainwater alone to meet their daily needs. During the dry season, they are forced to buy water for IDR 250,000 per truck. Because many residents cannot afford to pay for such expensive water, the BPBD Bangli, in cooperation with BPBD Bali took the initiative of supplying them with clean water, to ease their burden. “This area faces water shortages regularly. To meet their daily needs, some residents are forced to buy water and the very poor rely not eh kindness of their neighbours,” he explained.

Karmawan also revealed that five other hamlets in Yangapi village, namely; Sida-parna, Tingas, Kubusuih, Bukti and Belok are also experiencing similar conditions. In order to overcome the challenges of an on-going water crisis, Karmawan said that the BPBD will continue to monitor the situation

and coordinate with village officials. He also stressed that coordination does not happen in one direction, meaning that as soon as village officials know they are facing severe water shortages, they should report to the BPBD.

Karmawan also said that water started being supplied to some areas on Monday and will continue to be supplied until the drought ends. Apart from involving relevant agencies in Bangli, his party also cooperates with the BPBD Bali. “We are not working alone, but are also working with the provincial government to address the water crisis,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Head of the BPBD Bali, Dewa Made Indra, said that the water being supplied to Bangli County will be adjusted to people’s needs. He emphasized that the water being supplied should be used for domestic consumption only and not for farming. Last Monday, three water tank trucks, each con-taining 5.0000 litters of water were supplied to residents in need. Indra explained that they will be collecting date in order to determine how much water is needed per week. “We have started supplying water to several areas, including Yangapi village (Tembuku) and Suter village (Kintamani). We will be doing

field research in order to find out how much water is needed and hen we will deliver this amount every week,” he said.

In addition to recording the amount of water needed, they will also be recording the number of reservoirs in each region. “Similar assistance will be provided by Social Services and Public Works,” said this official from Buleleng.

Tingas hamlet chief, I Made Randika said that there are no springs around the hamlet that he heads. As a result, Tingas residents are forced to buy expensive water and when the dry season arrives, each household needs to buy about 15 trucks of clean water. The high cost of meeting their demands for water is a big burden to poor people. “The price of water is expensive and there are no springs in this village, so it is a pity for pour households,” he said.

To meet the needs of residents, Randika hopes that the water being supplied by the county and provincial governments will continue to arrive regularly so that residents receive their equal share. “We hope that water is not just being supplied today, but will con-tinue to arrive by truck until the rainy season arrives,” he said. (kmb45)

Ida Bagus Bintara, a researcher at the Civil En-gineering Department of the Bali State Polytechnic, says that Bali needs to take immediate regulatory steps to prevent further exploitation of the ground water. “Bali should seek immediate solutions to prevent a full on water crisis in Bali,” he said.

A number of reports of drought in certain ar-eas of Bali, he said, strongly indicate that Bali is now a zone that is prone to clean water deficit. Numerous studies also indicate that there has been a dramatic decline in the amount and quality of Bali’s surface water, which is often polluted. Some residents even have dried up wells. In Gianyar, for instance, the groundwater level has dropped to anywhere from 50 to 72 meters below ground level, while in Kuta and Sanur it is now 63 to 73 meters below ground level. Lake Buyan the largest source of fresh water in Bali, has decreased by 5 meters since 2005.

Meanwhile, the Bali Environment Agency (BLH) has reported that seawater intrusion has occurred in the areas of Suwung, Sanur and Kuta. “It’s a fact that has already happened. It is ironic that Denpasar and a number of other regions in Bali still have floods when it rains,” said Ida Bagus Bintana.

He added that in some parts of Denpasar such as Peguyangan, Renon and Panjer, where water can only be sourced from 100 meters and lower, are particularly prone to water deficits. “Currently, the highest water level elevation of wells are in; South Denpasar with water at 1.53 meters below ground level, East Denpasar (4.06 meters), North Denpasar (5.63 meters) and West Denpasar (7.41 meters).”

Bintana added that due to declining groundwa-ter levels, the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) have started to abandon the use of infiltration wells as their water reserves.

Now the PDAM even manages surface water sources, such as streams to supply clean water to its customers. “Currently, only 20 percent of Bali’s underground water reserve remains. By 2020 Bali could become an ecological crisis zone,” he said.

Ecological crisis will occur more rapidly in densely populated areas. Within the past ten years, water usage in Bali has increase by 100 percent, thanks to the large amounts of water required for the tourism industry and the uncontrolled increase in the number of residents and building developments.

Given these facts Bintana hopes that Bali will take immediate strategic measure to protect the water. Aside from implementing regulations Bali also needs to take immediate practical steps such as creating infiltration wells. “The exploitation of the groundwater must also be immediately regulated, and the regulations should be clear,” he advised.

He also suggested that Bali to have a ground-water zoning map and a create a groundwater con-servation management model based on appropriate zoning. Bintana also advised land owners who have drilled into the water table, immediately replace this source of water with infiltration wells. (dir)

His name may not ring a bell, but Google’s new CEO Sundar Pichai has worked on some of the company’s best-known products -- from the Chrome browser to the Android mobile software. Pichai, 43, was named chief executive of-ficer of the Internet titan Monday, as Google unveiled a new corporate structure creating an umbrella com-pany dubbed Alphabet.

He will oversee the biggest company under that umbrella, which will still be called Google and will continue to include some of its household products, including its search engine, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and the Android system.

Alphabet will be run by Google chief Larry Page, who showered praise upon Pichai, senior vice president of products.

“I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspirations,” according to Page in a blog post.

Page said he was impressed with his “progress and dedication to the company” and promised to continue to groom Pichai, who has been at Google since 2004.

“I have been spending quite a bit of time with Sundar, helping him and the company in any way I can, and I will of course continue to do that.”

In his role as SVP of products, Pichai oversees management, engi-neering and research for Google’s products and platforms, according to Google’s filing at the US Securi-ties and Exchange Commission.

Before that, he was SVP of Google Android, Chrome and Apps, working on consumer products “used by millions of people,” the filing said.

Pichai was part of the team that launched the Chrome browser in 2008 and also worked on various

search products, including Google Toolbar, Desktop Search, Gadgets and Google Gears, according to the company.

US media described him as soft-spoken, little-known, and a long-time right-hand man to men-tor Page.

In a 2014 interview with Forbes he said one of his main priorities was the transition to mobile.

“Is it an important shift for us?” he said.

“Yes. Are we doing it well? There are many indications that yes we are. When you look at all our core products, they do well in mobile.”

He also talked about expanding Google Play into China, which Google withdrew from in 2010 after a fallout with Beijing over censor-ship issues.

“If we can figure out a model by which we can serve those users, it would be a privilege to do so. So, I don’t think of China as a black hole,” he told the magazine.

“I see it as a huge opportunity in which we are playing as an enabling platform today and hopefully we have a chance to offer other services in the future.”

Before joining Google, Pichai worked as an engineer at manufac-turer Applied Materials, followed by a stint in management consulting at McKinsey & Company.

Originally from Tamil Nadu state in southeast India, Pichai received a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

He also has a Master of Science from Stanford University and a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Page said Pichai is the man to steer the Google ship in the coming years, as it continues to innovate and expand its product base. (afp)

The new company will be called “Alphabet,” Google CEO and co-founder Larry Page announced Mon-day. Page said he’ll be CEO of the new holding company, while longtime Google executive Sundar Pichai will become CEO of Google’s core business, including its search engine, online advertising operation and You-Tube video service.

While the company will still use the Google name for those core ser-vices, Page said the new structure will provide more independence for divisions like Nest, which makes Internet-connected home appliances, and Calico, which is conducting cutting-edge health research.

Analysts said the move may also be a nod to Wall Street demands for more fiscal accountability: As part of the reorganization, Page said the company will begin reporting financial results by segments. That should give a clearer picture of how Google’s core Internet business is performing, sepa-rate from other ventures, said analyst Colin Gillis of the investment firm BGC Partners.

Google reported more than $14 bil-lion in profit on $66 billion in sales last

year, most of it from lucrative Internet advertising, while other ventures have required large investments without showing immediate returns.

The reorganization also cements the importance of Pichai, who is viewed by many as a potential successor to Page. Google’s other co-founder, Sergey Brin, will be president of the new holding company.

With the reorganization, Page signaled that he wants to give more authority to CEOs of the companies that will be part of the new entity known as Alphabet.

Businesses that will operate sepa-rately under the Alphabet umbrella include Calico, which Google estab-lished to conduct health research in 2013; Nest, which Google acquired in 2014; Fiber, which is building high-speed broadband networks in several cities; and Google X , the research lab responsible for Google’s self-driving car venture and previously developed its controversial Internet headset, known as Glass.

Alphabet will also oversee Google Ventures and Google Capital, two cor-porate investment entities that focus on early- and growth-stage startups.

Google’s YouTube video division, however, will remain part of the core business under Pichai, although Page made a point of praising its chief, longtime ad executive Susan Wojcicki. Google historically has not reported earnings separately for the YouTube business.

“It may not be quite ready yet,” Gil-lis said of YouTube. “Maybe they’re going to do a little polishing and work on profitability first.”

The new structure could make it easier for Google Inc. to sell off some of its unrelated businesses, or buy new ones, analysts said. Page has suggested previously that he is a fan of Warren Buffett, the famed financier and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett’s con-glomerate owns more than 80 subsid-iary companies and lets each operate with substantial independence.

Google said its chief financial offi-cer, Ruth Porat, will hold the same title for both Google and Alphabet. Once the reorganization is complete, the company says its two existing classes of publicly traded stock will continue to trade on the Nasdaq exchange un-der the ticker symbols “GOOG” and “GOOGL.” (ap)

During the same period, the number of domestic passengers also dropped to 356,184, or a decrease of 5.17 percent from 375,617 passengers in the previous month,” Head of the Bali Central Bureau of Statistics Panusunan Siregar stated here on Monday.

The domestic flights operated from Bali to five main destinations: the Soeka-rno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta (with 1,097 flights), the Juanda Airport in Surabaya (441 flights), the Lombok Praya Airport in West Nusa Tenggara (216), Yogyakarta’s airport (199), and Bandung (180), among others.

The Ngurah Rai airport has been forced

to temporarily shut down its operations several times due to the eruption of Mount Raung located in East Java Province.

Moreover, the management of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport incurred losses amounting to US$40 thousand per day due to Mount Raung’s erup-tion, which frequently forced temporary closures of the airport, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya pointed out recently.

The I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali has been named the world’s third-best among the 30 airports, with a passenger capacity of 15-25 mil-lion per year, according to the Airports Council International (ACI). (ant)

MANGUPURA - Bukit Sari Sangeh tourist attraction is increasingly crowded by domestic and foreign travelers. Especially on school holidays and feast days, the attraction located at Sangeh village, Abiansemal subdistrict, Badung or about 18 km north of Denpasar is definitely booming. “Local people also throng this attraction. They came from various regions in Bali,” said Operations Manager, Made Sumohon.

At the time of Galungan and the Eid in July 2015, ex-plained Sumohon, two major feast days had positive impact on tourist visits to Sangeh. Local communities are coming from the towns across the island like Tabanan, Gianyar, Bangli, Karangasem, Buleleng and Denpasar. “They seem to live in Denpasar which deliberately spend holiday with their children and families. Booming visits has made us overwhelmed to serve guests,” explained this calm man.

From the morning, tourist buses and private cars came to flow, so that the management lacks of parking space. Instant photo service providers seem to harvest because almost all photographers get customers. They chose a monkey as their background. Some others also choose nutmeg trees of hundreds of years old, and the statue Kumbakarna Karebut located in front of the forest. “People working as seasonal traders also gets their fortune, starting from the seller of wrapped rice, snacks and children’s toys,” he said.

According to Sumohon, the tourist arrivals showed tremendous increase. In July 2015, tourist arrivals reached 2,000. It showed an increase compared to the same period in the previous year only reaching 1,000 people. “They are mostly European and Asian travelers visiting Sangeh. It happens because the road connecting Sangeh (Badung) to Cau Belayu (Tabanan) is good, so that the path to Bedugul becomes smoother,” said Sumohon. (kmb)

DENPASAR - Foreign travelers are not exempt from Regional Bylaw No.10/2011 on Smoke-free Areas. Head of the Bali Municipal Police, Made Sukadana, said that they have caught at least 15 foreign travelers in violation of the Regional Bylaw at Ngurah Rai International Airport.

“Most of the foreign travelers were from Australia and were caught smoking outside of the designated smoking area. Although they do not know about the regional by-law on smoke-free areas, we do not care. When peoplel are found to be in violation, we take action,” he said in Denpasar, Monday (Aug. 10).

Sukadana added that foreign travelers are generally more disciplined. When told that they were in violation of existing regulations, they quickly admitted their guilt. The police are continuing to coordinate with the airport authorities in the enforcement of the Regional Bylaw on smoke-free areas there. The Bali Municipal Police also plan to enforce the regulation at state-owned hospitals in the counties and municipalities.

“We have been conducted enforcement at Sanglah Hospital twice. Later, we will target the county and mu-nicipal hospitals and create scheduled enforcement there. We are especially targeting hospitals because smoking is detrimental to health” he explained. Sukadana added that his party will gradually target schools. “Later on, we will charge misdemeanor and conduct on the spot trials,” he said.

Based on Article 18 of the Regional Bylaw on Smoke-free Area, offenders will be subject to 3-month imprison-ment or a fine of IDR 50,000. Because they have received complaints about the amount of the fine, the Bali Munici-pal Police are consulting with the Legal Bureau to about reducing the amount of the fine. (kmb32)

Spokesman for the Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto made the announce-ment about Ronny leaving office and added that since the two star general from Minahasa became Director General of Immigration, the position of Police Chief re-mains vacant.

“The secret telegram disclosing the name of new Poilce Chief for Bali has not been issued yet,” said Hery via telephone.

“Nyoman Suryasta, has been appointed acting Chief of the Bali Police for the time being” added Hery.

Since they have not received the secret telegram, the Bali Police

have not been able to prepare a farewell ceremony. According to the police spokesman, they are still waiting for the command of the leadership of the National Police Headquarters.

“No preparations have been made as we are still waiting. Beacause Mr. Ronny is now serv-ing as Director General of Immi-gration, he will retire from police services,” said the former spokes-man of the Bengkulu Police.

As for rumours that Division Head of Public Relations, Anton Charliyan will be appointed as Chief of the Bali Police, Hery said that he dare not comment, given

that no telegram has been issued. “Once we have received the secret telegram, we will release the name of the new Bali Police Chief to the public,” he said.

Ronny filled the position as the Chief of Bali Police since March 6, 2015, replacing Benny Mokalu. His tenure was relatively short compared to previous officials, however Ronny, who graduated from Police Academy in 1984 was able to uncover the case of the death of Angeline in a relatively short time, a case that shocked the public and drew international attention.

Now that he is serving as Direc-tor General of Immigration, Ronny has officially retired from the National Police and now has the status of civil servant. “Hopefully, Mr. Ronny F. Sompie can execute his tasks successfully in his new position,” said Hery. (kmb36)

“There are no bloodstains on our hands,” the two-term presi-dent said after police last week obtained a court order to exhume Thajudeen’s body on suspicion that he had been murdered.

Rajapaksa, who has set his sights on becoming Sri Lanka’s next prime minister, said the investigation was timed to coin-cide with the Aug. 17 elections. He demanded an independent inquiry.

Nobody has been arrested or charged, but the case has received sensational coverage in the local press that could mobilise voters resentful of Rajapaksa, who as Sri Lankan leader built a close alliance with China. “It’s poten-tially very explosive - it might go right to the top,” said analyst Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, who runs a policy think tank and elec-tion monitoring group.

Although still held in high esteem by much of Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhala community for defeating a 26-year Tamil insurgency in 2009, Rajapaksa is reviled by others who accuse him of running a brutal dynastic regime.

According to a poll by Sara-vanamuttu’s Centre for Policy Al-ternatives, most minority Tamils and Muslims back Prime Minister Ranil Wikremesinghe’s reformist coalition.

Rajapaksa has a narrow edge among Buddhist Sinhalese - who make up seven in 10 voters on the strategically located Indian Ocean island of 20 million. In a

one-on-one premiership contest, Wikremesinghe would have a 10-point lead. Thajudeen’s remains, wrapped in polythene, were ex-humed on Monday on the order of a court to establish whether his injuries were consistent with a police report that his car crashed into a wall on a quiet Colombo side street and caught fire.

Government spokesman Ra-

jitha Senaratne alleged last week that three members of the presi-dential security guard had tor-tured and killed Thajudeen, who played for the national rugby side captained by Rajapaksa’s second son, Yoshitha.

Officials also allege that the Rajapaksa administration sup-pressed a post mortem report which found that Thajudeen had suffered extensive injuries to his head, neck, pelvis and legs.

The autopsy’s findings were only released after Maithripala Sirisena defeated Rajapaksa in a Jan. 8 presidential vote. Follow-ing the opening of the murder investigation, Sirisena has fired his security detail. (ap)

BUENOS AIRES - Argentina’s presidential race was wide open on Monday and likely to be settled in a run-off vote after primaries indi-cated ruling party candidate Daniel Scioli did not have enough support to win outright in the first round.

The prospect of a head-to-head between Scioli and his more business-friendly rival, Mauricio Macri, sent Argentine bond prices higher, with defaulted U.S. dollar discount bonds hitting a two-month high.

Macri has promised to unravel swiftly outgoing President Cris-tina Fernandez’s controls on the economy to free up the market. Scioli advocates gradual change but his defense of leftist Fernandez’s policies led opponents to question his credentials.

Scioli, who will need woo un-decided voters, said he would not shy away from making policy corrections needed to further the development of Latin America’s No. 3 economy.

“Our idea is to maintain the poli-cies that need maintaining, correct the policies that need correcting and deepen those that need deepening,”

Scioli told a news conference on Monday.

With 98 percent of votes count-ed, official results showed Scioli, who ran unopposed for the ruling Front for Victory party’s ticket, winning 38.41 percent. Macri’s Let’s Change alliance secured 30.07 percent of votes.

A candidate needs 45 percent, or 40 percent with a 10-point margin over the second-place candidate, to win the first round of the election outright on Oct. 25. Argentina’s pri-maries allow voters to cast ballots across party lines and so provide an accurate account of public opinion ahead of the first round.

“Scioli will launch a huge effort to increase his share of votes ... which means that he will moderate his stance,” said Daniel Kerner of Eurasia Group.

In early trading, Argentina’s de-faulted 2033 U.S. dollar Discount bonds rose as much as 1.47 percent to a two-month high of 100.917 before easing off, Thomson Reuters data showed.

Argentina’s benchmark Merval index was up 6 percent late in the afternoon. (rtr)

MEXICO CITY — Mexico City investigators will travel to the Gulf coast state of Veracruz to ques-tion its governor about the killing of a photojournalist, the mayor of the Mexican capital said Monday.

Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said all lines of investigation remain open in the case, including possible political motives, and the investiga-tive team will go to Veracruz on Tuesday.

Veracruz Gov. Javier Duarte has told local media that he has no knowledge of the incident, which occurred on July 31 in a Mexico City apartment where four women were also slain.

Photographer Ruben Espinosa had fled Veracruz recently, saying he feared for his safety due to his work covering protests.

Murder probe casts shadow over comeback bid

by Sri Lanka’s RajapaksaCOLOMBO - The exhumation of the remains of a star

rugby player whose death is now the target of a murder in-vestigation has cast a shadow over former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s comeback bid at Sri Lanka’s general election next week. SINGARAJA - Steam-fueled power plant at Celukan Bawang, Gerokgak subdistrict, having been in operation is still highlighted by a number of parties in Buleleng. One of the highlights is originating from the Buleleng House. The esteemed people’s representatives deplored that PT General Energy Bali (GEB) and its business partner China Hu-dian Corporation (CHC) applies Chinese scripts and language in its operation.

If this situation persists, it is feared to make difficulty for the workers, especially those from Indonesia that do not understand Chinese language. In addition, the use of Chinese scripts and language is considered less ap-preciative to the nation and state

of Indonesia where the foreign company invests.

Seeing the condition, Com-mission II of the Buleleng House came down directly to the Celukan Bawang power plant, Monday af-ternoon (Aug. 10). Entourage of the legislators from Commission II was accompanied by Deputy Chairman Ketut Susila Umbara. In addition, the people’s representatives also invited the personnel of Municipal Police. When arriving at the plant site, they were received by the of-ficials of PT GEB and CHC. They had discussion at length related to the alleged ethical violation in the use of language and scripts in the operation of the Celukan Bawang power plant.

Chairman of Commission

II of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, said at the power plant site that he suggested a few points that should get the attention from the PT GEB and CHC. One of the important points is the use of Chinese scripts in the technical guidance of the power plant operations. It is considered to make difficulty for workers that do not understand Chinese language.

Violating ethicsBesides, he also found the flag

pole is mounted in parallel to the flag pole of the company. This investor attitude is considered to have violated the ethics of the nation. The House also asked the investor to immediately resolve

the problem on coal waste storage that has not got serious handling. Actually this situation has resulted in disruption to the environment around the power plant. “We find that all operational guides use Chinese language. Our national flag pole is mounted in parallel. It seems to give no appreciation to our nation. This is an important note. Hopefully, this can be fol-lowed up,” he said.

Similar opinion was disclosed by Chief of the Buleleng Municipal Police, Made Budi Astawa. He said that all the processes of the Celukan Bawang power plant investment have been running. In the opera-tion of this plant, investor is asked to respect the language, scripts and symbols of the state of Indonesia.

“It is just a material of evaluation so that investor can pay attention to the symbols of our state. After all this investment lies in Indonesia, so that it needs to be considered and respected,” he said.

Over the findings by the House, a representative of PT GEB, Mr. Zhu, promised to make improve-ment in the matter of scripts and language used at the Celukan Bawang power plant. In the near future, the operational guide-lines will be written in Bahasa Indonesia and Latin scripts. “The demand of local government and parliament will soon be fulfilled. Later, we will use Bahasa Indo-nesia, so that it is not difficult for local workers,” he promised. (kmb38)

MANGUPURA - Health fa-cility by Social Security Agency (BPJS) for health services is not only intended for Indonesian citi-zens. Pieter Bleeck, 75, a foreigner who received medical treatment at Mangusada Hospital, Badung, due to fractures in his right arm, also used the health facility.

Managing Director of Badung Hospital, Agus Bintang Suryadi,

accompanied by Nurija handling the foreigner said that Pieter Bleeck treated in Janger Room for ten days received treatment at one of the clinics at Sembung region, Mengwi. “Since the illness requires serious treatment, he was then referred to here (Mangusada Badung Hospital—Ed). I was also surprised when first seeing that foreigner also took the BPJS. It is

for the first time at this hospital,” said Nurija when confirmed on Monday (Aug. 10).

According to him, the coming of the foreign traveler from the Neth-erlands drew the attention of many parties like general patients mostly consisting of local residents and the ranks of doctors at this state-owned hospital. This foreign national lives on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai 9 Nusa

Dua. “We cannot refuse because according to the Law on the BPJS Health Services, foreign travelers or expatriates that have been living in Indonesia for more than six months can use the BPJS Health Services,” he said.

After getting certainty about provision of the services, a team of doctors set up an operation. In addition to having fractures, Bleeck

occupying the second class treat-ment room has also suffered from shortness of breath for long enough. “As usual, we prepare the operating procedures and the operation runs smoothly,” he said.

It is added that condition of Bleeck is getting better after receiv-ing intensive treatment and he was allowed to go home on Monday morning (Aug. 10). (kmb27)

Tokyo closed down 0.42 percent, or 87.94 points, at 20,720.75 while Sydney fell 0.65 percent, or 35.96 points, to close at 5,473.2.

South Korean shares fell 0.82 percent after disappointing earn-ings, with the benchmark KOSPI index ending down 16.52 points at 1,986.65.

But Shanghai had added 0.83 percent in mid-afternoon trade while Hong Kong was up 0.71 percent.

China on Tuesday announced a sharply lower daily reference rate for the yuan against the US dol-lar, saying it was part of moves to make its exchange rate regime more market-oriented.

The 1.86 percent cut -- the largest

since the yuan was unpegged from the greenback in 2005 -- comes as speculation mounts China is preparing to widen its currency trading band for the first time since March 2014.

Weak trade and inflation data re-leased last weekend reinforced con-cerns that growth is slowing in the world’s second largest economy.

“The yuan’s weakness helps with exporters and improves the economic outlook as well,” Castor Pang, head of research at Core-Pacific Yamaichi, told Bloomberg News.

“The currency will depreci-ate in (the) short-term, reflecting weakness in internal economic momentum.”

The news drove Hong Kong shares higher, with PetroChina and Jiangxi Copper surging more than three percent, leading gains for en-ergy and resources companies.

But fears a weaker yuan could hurt airlines’ profits hit their shares hard, with China Southern Airlines losing 17.3 percent to HK$6.82 while Air China sank 13 percent to HK$7.40. China Eastern Airlines lost 12.7 percent to HK$5.70.

News of China’s move sent ripples through Asia’s currency markets, pushing the Australian dollar -- often seen as a proxy for the yuan -- down 1.23 percent to 73.22 US cents.

The US dollar gained against the yen, trading at 124.92 com-pared with 124.72 in New York on Monday, along with gains against the South Korean won and Indian rupee. (afp)

SINGAPORE - Singapore on Tuesday narrowed its full-year economic growth forecast after the trade-reliant economy contracted in the second quarter owing to weak-ened global demand.

The full-year growth forecast was trimmed to 2.0-2.5 percent this year from 2.0-4.0 percent previ-ously after a 4.0 percent quarter-on-quarter contraction in April to June, the trade ministry said in a statement based on final data for the quarter.

The second quarter contraction reversed growth of 4.1 percent in the previous three months, the ministry said.

“Several key downside risks in the external economic environment remain,” it said in the statement.

“The global economy performed weaker than expected in the first half of 2015. For the rest of the year, global growth is expected to pick up gradually, although the pace of growth is likely to be uneven across economies.”

It added that “growth in some labour-intensive sectors such as

food services may be weighed down by labour constraints.”

The construction industry grew 2.9 percent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, compared with 4.2 percent growth in January-March.

The accommodation and food services sector meanwhile shrank 1.4 percent from the previous quarter, following a 6.5 percent dip in the first three months of the year.

Sectors such as construction and hospitality are under pres-sure owing to tighter government rules for foreign labour aimed at placating public anger over a surge in immigration, analysts have said.

The large presence of overseas workers has become a hot-button political issue in the island nation, with widespread expectations a general election will be called in September.

Some citizens complain that for-eigners are competing with locals for jobs, causing overcrowding and straining public transport and other services. (afp)

ATHENS — Greece only has a few details to iron out with inter-national creditors before conclud-ing a bailout agreement, officials said Tuesday, raising hopes that the cash-strapped country could be ready to finalize a deal within the day.

Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos sounded upbeat about the prospects of an imminent deal that would prevent the country’s default later this month and secure its future in the euro.

“I think we are very close. Two or three very small details remain,” he said as he emerged Tuesday morning from all-night talks with negotiators represent-ing Greece’s creditors at a central Athens hotel.

He did not elaborate further on the outstanding details.

Similarly optimistic remarks came from government aide The-odoros Mihopoulos, who said on

Twitter that the negotiation had been completed and that “some details remain.”

Greece’s government is hoping to push the new 85 billion-euro ($93 billion) three-year agreement through parliament this week, ahead of an expected meeting be-tween eurozone finance ministers on Friday.

A key test will be the reaction of Greece’s creditor countries. Germany, the largest single con-tributor to Greece’s two previous bailouts, has stressed the impor-tance of being thorough in the complicated negotiations.

Greece needs a deal by Aug. 20 at the latest, when it has a debt repayment of a little more than 3 billion euros to make to the European Central Bank. The country won’t be able to make that payment without funds emerging from the country’s third bailout in just over five years. (ap)

BANDA ACEH — Indonesia police have arrested four suspected poachers of a Sumatran tiger, an endangered species.

The four were captured a village in Aceh province’s Tamiang district on Saturday, three days after they were believed to have killed a four-year-old tiger. Lt. Col. Mirwazi of the Aceh police said late Monday that three of them were hunters while the other acted as the seller.

Police confiscated the tiger’s hide and bones from the suspects. He said the poachers used a deer trap to capture the tiger, so that

its skin was not damaged.Mirwazi said the suspects offered to sell the skin for 10 mil-

lion rupiah (approximately $800) to police officers who disguised themselves as buyers after receiving tips from villagers about the poaching.

He said the four could be charged with violating a 1999 law on protection of natural resources, which carries a maximum five-year jail term.

Sumatran tigers, distinguished by heavy black stripes on their orange coats, are the most critically endangered tiger subspecies. About 400 remain, down from 1,000 in the 1970s, because of forest destruction and poaching. (ap)

Chief Economics Minister Sofyan Djalil announced the in-crease late Monday, although he did not say over what period the cattle would be imported.

“I have given consent for the state logistics agency to import 50,000 live cattle,” he told report-ers, adding it was a “short-term” measure.

He did not say where they would come from, but much of Indonesia’s beef is shipped from Australia.

Jakarta announced last month that the quota for cattle imports from Australia in the third quarter, from July to September, would be set at 50,000, an 80 percent reduction from the previous three months.

The move came as Indonesia seeks to achieve self-sufficiency in its beef supplies but it shocked Australian cattle producers, as In-donesia is their biggest market for live exports, and sparked concerns that recent diplomatic tensions were affecting trade.

But following the decision, there was a sharp increase in the cost of beef in Indonesia, with prices as high as 130,000 rupiah ($10) a kilogram in some areas. Reports said this was up from about 90,000 rupiah a kilogram previously.

The higher prices sparked public anger and prompted Indonesian butchers to begin a four-day strike at the weekend.

The decision to ask the logistics

agency to import cattle marks a shift in normal procedure in Indonesia, as private importers are usually responsible.

Djalil said the government would also seek to ensure high prices were not caused by hoarding.

Cattle trade has long been a sensitive issue between the neigh-bours.

In 2011, Australia temporarily banned shipments to Indonesia after a documentary revealed cruel treat-ment of cows in Indonesian abat-toirs, angering Australian exporters and encouraging Jakarta to seek out supplies from elsewhere.

Relations are currently tense between the nations, after the execution in April of two Aus-tral ian drug traffickers, and allegations that Australian offi-cials paid the crew of a people-smuggling vessel to turn back to Indonesia. (afp)

JAKARTA - An Israeli who was only granted a visa at the 11th hour to compete in the world badminton championships in Muslim-majority Indonesia blamed the immigration saga for his early departure from the tournament on Tuesday.

Misha Zilberman, who represented Israel at the London 2012 Olympics, was defeated by Taiwan’s Hsu Jen-hao 21-14, 21-14 in his opening round match in Jakarta, ending his campaign.

The 26-year-old shuttler had initially been refused permission to enter Indonesia and was stuck in Singapore, a short flight from Jakarta, in the run-up to the tournament.

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, and the Jewish state do not have formal diplomatic ties and it is difficult for Israelis to visit the Southeast Asian nation.

But he was granted a visa at the last minute after the Badminton World Federation directly intervened on his behalf.

The federation confirmed with AFP its secretary general Thomas Lund travelled to Singapore to assist with his case.

The Israeli player did not speak to media following his first-round loss, with the badminton federation citing security concerns for his absence.

But in an interview with the federation, he blamed the fracas around his visa for his poor showing, saying the whole experience had not been easy after a year of careful preparation for the cham-pionships.

“I am very disappointed that I didn’t show even 50 per cent of what I could because I didn’t practise for the last five days or hit any shuttles,” he said.

“I thought I could play better... more close to him. I would have needed three or four days to come and feel everything.”

Despite the outcome, Zilberman said he had been happy to compete in Jakarta, saying it was proof “sport is more important than politics”.

The World Jewish Congress welcomed the decision Monday to allow Zilberman access to Indonesia, saying athletes who qualify for international events should be allowed to compete regardless of their nationality.

According to Indonesian immigration regulations, Israelis who wish to visit the country must obtain a special visa in Bangkok or Singapore after getting a sponsorship letter from Indonesian of-ficials. (afp)

The former Florida governor will also call for a renewed sense of U.S. leadership in the Middle East, which he says is needed to defeat the mili-tant group and an ideology that “is, to borrow a phrase, the focus of evil in the modern world.”

“The threat of global jihad, and of the Islamic State in particular, requires all the strength, unity and confidence that only American lead-ership can provide,” Bush will say, according to excerpts of his remarks as prepared for delivery.

In a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, Bush plans to tie the rise of the militant Sunni group, which now occupies a large swath of Iraq, Syria and other Middle Eastern coun-tries, to the departure of U.S. forces from Iraq in 2011.

“ISIS grew while the United States disengaged from the Middle East and ignored the threat,” Bush will say. “And where was Secretary of State Clinton in all of this?

Clinton, he says, “stood by as that hard-won victory by American and allied forces was thrown away. In all her record-setting travels, she stopped by Iraq exactly once.”

American troops left Iraq in December 2011 as required under a 2008 security agreement worked out by former President George W. Bush. Both countries tried to negotiate plans to keep at least several thousand U.S. forces in Iraq beyond the deadline to help keep a lid on simmering tensions among Islamic sects.

The Iraqi government refused to let U.S. forces remain in their country with the legal immunity President Barack Obama’s administration insisted was necessary to protect them. Obama, who campaigned for president on ending the war in Iraq, took the opportunity to remove U.S. forces from the country.

“It was a case of blind haste to get out and to call the tragic conse-quences somebody else’s problem,” Bush will say. “Rushing away from danger can be every bit as unwise as rushing into danger, and the costs have been grievous.”

Since last year, after IS gained a foothold in Iraq and Syria, Obama has ordered the deployment of about 3,500 American military trainers and advisers who are helping Iraqi forces fight the Islamic State.

But despite 6,000 airstrikes flown

by U.S. and allied forces on IS positions over the past year, Ameri-can intelligence agencies recently concluded that the group remains a well-funded extremist army able to replenish its ranks with foreign fight-ers as quickly as the U.S.-led coali-tion can eliminate them. Meanwhile, the group has expanded to other countries including Libya, Egypt and Afghanistan.

Bush has yet, either on the cam-paign trail or in the preview of his Tuesday speech released by his cam-paign, to say exactly what a U.S.-led campaign against IS would look like if he is elected president.

That includes saying how many U.S. forces he would potentially seek to return to Iraq, although he has said he supports allowing U.S. military personnel to join Iraqi fighters in guiding airstrikes, which they are barred from doing now. Bush has said he supports a no-fly zone in Syria, but has not suggested U.S. advisers or fighters deploy to Syria.(ap)secretary of state on Tuesday, Aug. 11, argu-ing in a speech on foreign policy the Democratic frontrunner shares in the mistakes that he argues led to the rise of the Islamic State.

FERGUSON, Missouri — Po-lice arrested nearly two dozen people in the Missouri city of Ferguson during a fourth consecutive night of demonstrations marking the an-niversary of the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

The gathering that stretched into early Tuesday morning came a day after a protest that was interrupted by gunfire and a police shooting that left an 18-year-old critically injured. The violence set the St. Louis suburb on edge and had protest leaders wor-ried about whether tensions would escalate.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger declared a state of emergen-cy, which authorized county Police Chief Jon Belmar to take control of police emergency management in and around Ferguson.

By early Monday evening, hun-dreds of people had gathered again along West Florissant Avenue, the thoroughfare that was the site of massive protests and rioting after Brown was fatally shot last year

in a confrontation with a Ferguson police officer.

The protesters chanted, beat drums and carried signs. When some in the group moved into a traffic lane, officers in riot gear forced people out of the street. Some dem-onstrators threw water bottles and other debris at officers.

Belmar told The Associated Press: “They’re not going to take the street tonight. That’s not going to happen.”

Ferguson resident Hershel Myers Jr., 46, criticized the police response as aggressive and unnecessary.

A military veteran, he added, “It’s wrong for me to have to go overseas and fight with ‘Army’ across my chest, but we can’t fight on our own street where I live.”

By 1 a.m., the crowd and police presence along West Florissant had been begun to diminish.

County police spokesman Shawn McGuire said approximately 23 ar-rests were made, though police were still confirming official totals. (ap)

MADRID — Spanish police say they have sent a team of experts to the French island of Corsica to retrieve a Picasso painting owned by a Spanish banker.

Authorities in Spain say the 1906 painting — “Head of a Young Woman” — is a national treasure and could not be taken out of the country.

A spokesman for Spain’s Civil Guard said four police experts in national heritage and several Cul-

ture Ministry officials flew early Tuesday to recuperate the painting that is valued at 24 million euros ($26 million).

The officer said they expect to return with the painting later Tuesday.

He was speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with police regulations.

The painting, owned by Jaime Botin, was seized by French police off a boat in late-July. (ap)

SYDNEY — A 91-year-old retired surgeon has been charged with importing cocaine hidden in soap into Australia, prompting police to warn travelers to beware they are not tricked into becoming drug mules.

Victor Twartz, of Sydney, was released on bail when he appeared in Sydney’s Downing Center Lo-cal Court charged with importing a commercial quantity of cocaine last month. He did not enter a plea and will appear in court next on Oct. 6.

The retired oral surgeon faces a potential life prison sentence if he is convicted of importing 4.5 kilo-grams (10 pounds) of the drug into Sydney Airport on a July 8 flight

from New Delhi.A search of Twartz’s luggage

found 27 packages of soap that tested positive for cocaine, police said.

Police say it appears that Twartz was scammed by a group of people he had befriended online before his trip. Australian Federal Police organized crime commander David Stewart declined to say whether Twartz had been promised anything by the group, but said he had been in contact with them over several months.

Police were tipped off by Twartz’s family about the email exchanges but did not stop him from leaving Australia, Stewart said. (ap)

BURBANK, California — Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush will step up his criti-cism of Hillary Rodham Clinton and her tenure as secretary of state on Tuesday, arguing in a speech on foreign policy the U.S. Democratic front-runner shares in the mistakes that he says led to the rise of the Islamic State group.

DENPASAR - Actually the destinations in Denpasar are quite diverse. However, because of its geographical position at lowland, the tourist destination is dominated by coast. As evidence, Denpasar has numerous beaches worth visit-ing. They are ranging from Sunrise Beach, Bali Beach, Sindu Beach, Segara Beach, Semawang to Mer-tasari Beach. This beach is located at the most southern end of Sanur.

What are the advantages of this attraction?

Mertasari Beach is a tourist attraction included in the tourist area of Sanur. On that account, it becomes a favorite choice for residents of the city of Denpasar as well as domestic and foreign trav-elers to enjoy beach atmosphere. Moreover, the beach is different from the other beaches at Sanur. On average the beaches around

Sanur face west. However, the Mertasari Beach does not, it faces north. So, if you want a different atmosphere, it is not wrong for you to visit this beach.

Many advantages can be enjoyed by visitors on this beach. In addi-tion to ample parking area, the path to the location of the beach is also very easy. This beach is located on Jalan Tirta Empul Sanur, or it can be reached via Jalan Pengembak

Sanur. To reach the beach location, travelers can pass through Sanur namely Jalan Danau Poso and then turn south to Jalan Pengembak and straight through to the beach.

However, visitors more fre-quently pass through Jalan Danau Poso and then turn south towards Jalan Sekar Waru. Then, turn right at the T-junction and then meet a large tree in the middle and turn left and finally you arrive on Mertasari Beach.

Mertasari Beach is a perfect place for relaxing, while bathing, swimming or sunbathing on white sand. Foreign travelers have long been familiar with this beach for

sunbathing. If we trace the sidewalk made by the Denpasar Municipality a few years ago, we will encounter travelers sleeping on their backs along the overlay of white sand, bathed in sunlight.

This becomes the main attrac-tion to tourists that rarely gets the opportunity to enjoy the sun like on the Mertasari Beach. Mertasari Beach has its own characteristics, where we can watch the view of sunrise and sunset like on Candi-dasa Beach. In the morning, we can see the beauty of the rising of the sun on the eastern horizon, while in the afternoon we can see the sunset.

He churned through the water, his body as ripped and fit as ever, producing times that haven’t been seen since the days of the high-tech bodysuits. When rival swimmer Chad le Clos trash-talked from afar, it only made Phelps go faster. “I did what I came here to do,” he said Monday.

Phelps was barred from the world championships after his second drunken-driving arrest, so he turned the national championships into his biggest meet of the year. Never mind that this was essentially a junior-varsity event, largely made up of promising youngsters, a few late bloomers and a smattering of big-name swimmers who failed to qualify for worlds.

Hardly the sort of competition that Phelps is used to facing, but he wasn’t concerned about the guy in the next lane. His attention was focused on Kazan, Rus-sia — specifically, the winning times at worlds in the 100-meter butterfly, the 200 fly, and the 200 individual medley. Phelps was determined to beat them all, to prove to everyone he was the real champion. Mission accomplished.

Phelps’ times in the fly harkened back to 2009, when rubberized suits made a mockery of the clock. His performance in the 200 IM was faster than anyone has gone since he won gold at the 2012 Olympics. “I prepared myself for the best and the worst,” he said. “I thought that was something that really made an impact on me being so relaxed. I was ready for anything. That’s something I got back to, something I haven’t done in a while.”

After winning eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, knocking off Mark Spitz’s iconic Olympic record, Phelps had largely accomplished what he wanted to do in the sport by age 23. His training fell off.

There was that notorious tabloid picture

of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe. And when he failed to even win a medal in his first event at London, it looked as though his time had passed.

Being Michael Phelps, he bounced back to capture four golds and two silvers at the 2012 Games, making him the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. He retired after his last event in London, with 18 golds, 22 medals overall, and suppos-edly no desire to keep swimming into his 30s. Well, here he is, about six weeks removed from his 30th birthday, on top of the game again.

His retirement barely lasted a year. His comeback has hardly been smooth, though. When he was arrested again for DUI last September, Phelps decided to take a long, hard look at himself. He went through six weeks of inpatient therapy, which helped him deal with everything from family dynamics (his parents di-vorced when he was a child, resulting in a strained relationship with his father) to issues with alcohol.

Phelps vowed not to drink at least through the Rio Games and made a com-mitment to get in the best shape of his life. That work has clearly paid off. He’s more muscular, more defined. His body didn’t hurt nearly as much as he thought it would after back-to-back-to-back races, though he requires more sleep than he did in his younger days. “My body doesn’t feel tired; I’m just sleepy,” he said. “That’s the biggest thing, just staying on top of my sleep.”

By the end of the month, he’ll move from his beloved Baltimore to the Phoenix area to remain with longtime coach Bob Bowman, who is taking over at Arizona State. They have one of the longest, most successful partnerships in sports, and Phelps’ trust in his coach never wavers. (ap)

MONTREAL - The French flag flew proudly in Montreal on Monday as Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils advanced to the second round of the Rogers Cup. Both Frenchmen enjoyed straight-sets victories while compatriot Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had his match delayed by rain in the final action of the day’s first round.

Monfils needed just over an hour to dispatch Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-1, denying the Italian a single break

in the match. “I wanted to start off this tournament well. It was not a great match, but I didn’t play bad,” Monfils told reporters.

“I played a solid match. It was important to me.” Ninth-seeded Simon extended his perfect record against Andreas Seppi to 5-0 with his 6-2 6-4 victory.

Simon broke Seppi three times and he too never lost serve. Tsonga was leading his opening set against Croatia’s Borna Coric 2-1 when

play was suspended. Defending champion Tsonga has fallen to number 24 in the world, his low-est ranking since bursting onto the scene following the 2008 Australian Open.

In other games, Spain’s Tommy Robredo overcome Feliciano Lopez 6-3 3-6 6-3, American Sam Quer-rey beat Martin Klizan 6-3 6-3, and Croatian Ivo Karlovic fired 18 aces past Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz on the way to a 6-4 7-6(6) victory. (rtr)

Michael Phelps celebrates his win in the finals of the men’s 200-meter individual medley at the the U.S. swimming nationals, Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, in San Antonio.

SAN ANTONIO — Michael Phelps already has far more medals than any Olympic athlete. There is no longer any reason to doubt he’ll have another massive haul in Rio. Not after an astounding weekend in sweltering San Antonio, where Phelps turned in a performance at the U.S. national champi-onships that re-established his place as the world’s dominant swimmer.

All the optimism surrounding Arse-nal — after a strong finish to last season and good set of preseason results — and talk of an assault at the Premier League title this campaign were punctured by a 2-0 home loss to West Ham featuring wasted chances and flaky defending. It’s a familiar story for Arsenal fans.

The arrival from Chelsea of Petr Cech, an authoritative goalkeeper with a vast medal collection and a winner’s mentality, was heralded by many as a breakthrough signing. One that could turn Arsenal from pretenders to genuine contenders.

Forgetting Cech’s mistakes against West Ham, surely it was a striker and a leader at either center back or in central midfield that Arsenal really needed to buy this summer?

Olivier Giroud’s scoring record in his three seasons at Arsenal — 11 league goals in 2012-13, 16 in 2013-14, and 14 in 2014-15 — is decent but surely not good enough to build an attack around. As it stands, he’s the only out-and-out senior striker at Wenger’s disposal, with his other options being wide players in A l e x i s S a n -c h e z , Theo

TBILISI, Georgia — Barcelona is bidding to match one of the greatest years in its history by winning six titles in 2015, but will have to cope without striker Neymar in Tuesday’s season-opening UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla. After winning the Champions League and the Spanish league and cup double last season, Barcelona is looking to match its record-breaking 2009 calendar year by winning the UEFA and Spanish Super Cups, plus

the Club World Cup.“It’s not so easy to get our six titles,

very few teams have done that, but to-morrow we’ll get started on that,” said Andres Iniesta, who starts his first season as Barcelona captain following Xavi Hernandez’s summer departure, through a translator. “We’re very excited to secure those six titles once again.” Neymar was ruled out for two weeks Sunday after catching mumps even though the club

WEST BROMWICH, England — Yaya Toure scored twice in the first half Monday as Manchester City began its Premier League campaign with an impressive 3-0 win over West Bro-mwich Albion.

Toure scored with two shots from just outside the area in the ninth and 24th minutes as the visitors dominated the match from the start. Captain Vincent Kompany headed in the third in the 59th in a fluid team performance that signaled that Manuel Pellegrini’s side will again be serious contenders for the league title after relinquishing the crown to Chelsea last season. New signing Raheem Sterling also looked lively for City but fluffed his best chance to score with a weak effort when through on goal in the 41st minute.

The margin of victory puts City atop the standings after the opening weekend. And with Chelsea held to a draw, Arsenal losing and Manchester United and Liverpool both earning un-convincing 1-0 wins, this was by far the best performance of the first round. Even more worrying for their rivals is that City did it largely without star striker Sergio Aguero, who only came on as a substitute for the last 25 minutes. He’s likely to be back in the starting lineup for a tougher test next weekend, when City hosts Chelsea in an eagerly anticipated matchup. Toure and Kompany were among City’s most heavily criticized players last season when they failed to reach the high standards of the previous title-winning campaign. But both signaled they’re back to their best this time around.

Toure’s first goal came with a bit of luck as his low shot was deflected by Craig Dawson and trickled slowly over the line past a stationary Boaz Myhill in goal. The second was superb, though, as Wilfried Bony laid the ball off just outside the box and Toure curled an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Sterling, who caused the West Brom defense plenty of problems with his speed and movement, was then sent clear on goal in the 41st but could only sidefoot a tame effort too close to Myhill.

Kompany’s third was also a bit lucky as he met a corner by the near post and the ball hit his shoulder before looping over Myhill. The Belgium defender celebrated by jumping up and down in front of the traveling City fans, showing just how badly he wants redemption after last season. “We came here today knowing we had a point to prove,” Kompany said. “Me more than anyone else probably. ... I just want to get back to my best level.” Judging by this performance, Kompany and City are almost there. (ap)

Man City beats West Brom 3-0 in Premier League

Daley Blind may lack the height and power but the Manchester United midfielder insists he possesses the footballing intelligence to flourish as a centre-back. Manager Louis Van Gaal started the 25-year-old Dutchman alongside Chris Smalling against Totten-ham Hotspur in United’s Premier League opener, having tried his compatriot out in central defence during pre-season.

United won the game 1-0 thanks to an own goal from Totten-ham’s Kyle Walker. Blind was pleased with his performance and the team’s clean sheet, and was especially happy about managing to keep the prolific Harry Kane quiet for 90 minutes.

“I got a chance on this occasion and I tried my best. Of course, people always say I don’t have the height or the power but I think I’m clever enough and smart enough,” the 5ft 10in Blind told the club’s website (www.manutd.com).

“I’ve said many times before that I just want to play,” he added. “If you see what everyone can add to the team, then it’s a real battle for places and everyone had to fight for a position. “I think we did well at the back, together with Chris, Luke (Shaw) and Matteo (Darmian) and we get a clean sheet so I was happy,” he said. NBC Sports Group, the sole broadcaster of Premier League matches in the United States, said on Monday it has agreed to a six-year extension of the deal that has seen thriving viewership for top-flight English soccer in recent seasons.

The deal will continue to make all 380 Premier League matches each season available to fans on the NBC Sports Group’s platforms, including NBC, NBCSN, USA Network, and Telemundo. Financial terms of the extension were not announced.

“We are excited to continue our tremendous partnership with the Premier League, and we look forward to presenting the world’s finest soccer league to Americans for many years to come,” said NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus.

“As sports fans, there’s nothing better than waking up on a weekend morning to live and relevant events.”

NBC is in the final season of a three-year, $250 million deal with the Premier League. The new deal will run through the 2021-22 season. NBC is a unit of Comcast Corp.

“NBC Sports has done a fantastic job broadcasting the Bar-clays Premier League for the last two seasons and we are ex-tremely pleased that they have invested in our U.S. rights.” said Premier League Executive Chairman Richard Scudamore.

The Premier League averaged 479,000 viewers on NBC and NBCSN last year, up 9 percent from its debut season in 2013-14. (rtr)

Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud reacts

after his team lost the English Premier League soccer match between

Arsenal and West Ham at the Emirates

stadium in London, Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015.

Arsenal still 1,2 players short of reaching former heights

MANCHESTER, England — The FA Cup. The Community Shield. The Asia Trophy. The Emir-ates Cup. Arsenal has built up quite the collection of trophies over the last few months. But the silverware the club really wants — the Premier League and the Champions League — look as far away as ever on the evidence of a season opener that exposed the biggest flaws in Arsene Wenger’s teams of recent years.

Walcott and Danny Welbeck.Giroud has one goal in his last 11

matches for Arsenal, and had another of those games against West Ham that makes you wonder what would happen if Arsenal had a reliable, world-class striker leading the line. “Giroud alone as a striker there — you can’t win the league,” former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry said ahead of the season. “You need another type of striker.”

Wenger also clearly thinks Francis Coquelin is the answer in central mid-field. It remains to be seen whether this unheralded Frenchman can maintain his impressive form from the second half to the last season, when he was thrust into the team as a last resort after being on loan in England’s third tier. For the door could be ajar for Arsenal this season, at least in the Premier League.

C h e l s e a , the defending c h a m p i o n ,

has decided

against major investment from an already-strong base, much like Man-chester City chose to do last summer. Manchester United’s new-look team may take time to gel after another off-season of heavy spending by Louis van Gaal, and still have to resolve its own striker shortage and uncertainty over the future of goalkeeper David De Gea.

An aging Man City is restructuring to bring to revitalize its attack, and Liver-pool also is in transition. Now is the time for Wenger to go for it and take the club to the next level — the top level. They have the money, even though Wenger has played down a claim by an Arsenal director, Lord Harris, that the club has 200 million pounds ($310 million) in the bank.

Speculation that Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is on Wenger’s radar won’t go away but the French coach seems to be veering toward going with

what he’s got up front.“I think we have to depend

less on one guy who can score. We need to develop the col-lective aspect,” Wenger has said, urging his midfield to weigh in with more goals. Wenger also believes there is a shortage of strikers

around because modern-day European football is focusing

on producing “technical mid-fielders” instead. Arsenal has plenty of them.

Most neutrals will be happy for Wenger to win the Premier League

title again, for the first time since 2004, and go deep in the Champions League simply as a reward for all the eye-catching football his teams have played down the years. Cech should be a success — his two errors against West Ham are likely to be exceptions rather than the rule, as he is too good — but a goalkeeper wasn’t a pressing concern. Colombia international David Ospina did a fine job when brought in midway through last season. A striker would have made a bigger difference.

Wenger splashed out nearly 80 mil-lion pounds ($124 million) on Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over the last two summers, giving Arsenal a surfeit of attacking midfielders. Now, they just need a top striker to feed. (ap)

said he had previously been vaccinated against the disease.

“We’ll miss his energy and joy,” fellow Brazilian Dani Alves said. Left-back Jordi Alba is also absent with a thigh injury, while summer arrivals Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan are ineligible until January due to a transfer ban. They have still traveled to Tbilisi, as has forward Pedro, who may be sold before the transfer window closes.

“As a teammate and as a player, with all his capabilities, we really hope (Pedro) will stay with us because he’s a world category player, spectacular,” Iniesta said. “He’s still our teammate, he’s here with us to earn this first title of the season with us.”

For Barcelona, the game follows a busy pre-season with games in the United States, Italy and the club’s home ground Camp Nou, while for Europa League holder Sevilla, it comes after a summer of change. Three of the players who started for Sevilla in May’s Europa League final have left, including Colombian striker Carlos Bacca, who scored twice in the final, a 3-2 win over Dnipro Dnipro-petrovsk. Among the new faces for Unai Emery’s team is Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, who played for Dnipro in that game.

Emery said through a translator that he was “content” with Konoplyanka’s adap-tation to the team, aided by the arrival of Russian-speaking assistant coach Dmitry Cheryshev, and that the winger’s output had been solid in pre-season but “it needs to be even better.”

The Super Cup is the first major Eu-ropean final to be held in Georgia, where conditions are likely to be warm and dry, despite a very late kickoff at 10.45 p.m. local time. That will suit European TV networks, but not necessarily the local fans who rushed for tickets in a rapid sell-out.

The Super Cup was played in Monaco from 1998 until 2012, but now takes place at a neutral venue chosen by UEFA. That spreads the spoils of UEFA competition around smaller federations at a time when UEFA president Michel Platini is running for president of FIFA. (ap)

FRANKFURT — A German Cup match between two lower-tier teams was abandoned in the second half after the ref-eree was hit in the head by a lighter thrown from the stands. Referee Martin Petersen did not appear to be seriously hurt but he sent the teams to the changing rooms in the 71st minute.

At the time, the home side Osnabrueck, a third-tier team, was leading 1-0 against heavy favorite RB Leipzig, a second-divi-sion club. Osnabrueck scored 23 seconds

into Monday’s opening-round match. The German football federation (DFB)

immediately launched an investigation. In a later match, Lars Stindl scored two goals as Borussia Moenchengladbach rallied in the second half to beat second-division St. Pauli 4-1. Moenchengladbach, which will play in the Champions League after finishing third in the Bundesliga last season, trailed 1-0 at halftime. But Stindl began the comeback in the 54th and Ibrahima Traore put the visiting team ahead for good two minutes

later. Stindl scored his second in the 67th and Thorgan Hazard completed the victory in the 86th. In another match, Hertha Berlin beat second-division Arminia Bielefeld 2-0 a day after its team bus was shot at in Bielefeld. No players were on the bus at the time and no one was injured.

Salomon Kalou and Vladimir Darida scored late in the match for the Bundesliga team. Also, second-division Nuremberg edged third-tier Aalen 2-1 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 deadlock. (ap)

(ap)

(ap)

(afp)

10). (kmb27)

(kmb32)

(dir)

(ap)

B A L I ’ S natural environ-

ment is being se-verely exploited through the rapid growth of investment in the tourism sector, high rates of urbanization and the uncontrolled conversion of land use from agricultural to settlement.

The balance of the ecosystem is ap-parently never considered by those who manage the natural resources of this island. The carrying capacity of Bali is left unmonitored and poorly managed thus leading to a number of critical situations, including a clean water crisis. Given that there

is a clean water deficit of some 26.7 billion cubic meters, Bali is being urged to implement regulations im-mediately to address this issue.

Expert observers consider Bali to be a particularly water crisis-prone zone and have stated that that the importance of water management

should not be underestimated. Ac-cording to a number of academic studies, some of the factors that need to be addressed in terms of water management in Bali include; the tourism industry, population growth and the rampant exploita-tion of groundwater. The intrusion

of seawater into the water table, the declining quality of available water and the destruction of vegetative forests in upstream regions are some of the immediate impacts of these factors.
