NEW YORK — Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” will open the 50th annual New York Film Festival. The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced Monday that Lee’s adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Yann Martel will premiere at the festival on Sept. 28.

Lee, whose “The Ice Storm” opened the festival in 1997, is only the fourth

filmmaker to twice take the opening night slot. Robert Altman, Pedro Almodovar and Francois Truffaut also share in the distinc-tion. The 3-D film, a fantasy about a boy marooned on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, is due in theaters Nov. 21.

The New York Film Festival runs Sept. 28 to Oct. 14. The Film Society earlier announced that Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight” will close the festival. The full slate will be announced later.

Division Head of Forestry, Tatang Priatna, with permission of the Head of Buleleng Forestry and Estate Agency, Komang Gede Yasa, said on Monday (Aug 13) that based on the report copy regarding the forest damage received from the Forest Management Area (KPH) of West Bali, 15 hectares of forest in the area were damaged and its condition grew critical. After the fire, the total damage was 10 hectares located in the area of Melanting Temple and other five hectares located in the west of Pulaki Temple, Banyupoh village, Gerokgak subdistrict.

As a result of the fire, condition of the forest previously classified into critical and rocky forest, now after the fire was getting more critical. “By all means, the condition of forest land will be getting more critical. Before the fire, the forest area was indeed quite rocky,” he said.

According to Tatang, rehabilita-tion after the fire for two times could be done. However, the agency had no authority to restore it alone. The agency along with KPH was just wait-ing for further instruction from the Bali Forestry Agency. It was carried out because the forest supervision and

management had now been handled by KPH in accordance with the policy of the Bali Government. “We cannot directly program the rehabilitation. Moreover, the authority of supervision and management is now held by KPH. Nevertheless, we will do the rehabili-tation against the damage together,” he explained.

On the other hand, Tatang said, it was actually difficult to rehabili-tate the forest in West Buleleng as condition of the forest was different from forests in other areas. It had no longer soil layer and only con-sisted of hard rocks. If forced, the rehabilitation would cost too much. Besides, the rehabilitation made would require a special treatment for the plants grown in the forest area. “Such condition has lasted long and it needs special rehabilitation. Of course, it requires a lot of budgets,” he explained.

MOSCOW — A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that hit waters off Russia’s Pacific island of Sakhalin on Tuesday inflicted no casualties or damage, Russian officials said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s branch on Sakhalin said the quake was centered in the Sea of Okhotsk about 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Poronaysk, Russia, at a depth of more than 600 kilometers (373 miles).

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 1 p.m. local time Tuesday, had a magnitude of 7.7, while the Russian ministry put it at 6.3.

“There have been no victims or damage,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the quake was felt as mag-nitude 2 to 3 shocks in towns and villages on Sakhalin. The ministry said that there was no danger of tsunami and that aftershocks were unlikely.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

It is one of several such sites that have sprung up in Hong Kong’s con-crete jungle, as the appetite for organic produce grows and people seek ways to escape one of the most densely populated places on earth. “I am hap-pier eating what I grow rather than food I buy from supermarkets,” said Melanie Lam, a 28-year-old nurse, who comes to the “City Farm” in the Quarry Bay district of Hong Kong’s main island about twice a week.

“Compared to vegetables from the supermarket, vegetables that I plant are sweeter and fresher. It gives me a greater sense of satisfaction.”

With most of the southern Chinese territory’s seven million people living in tower blocks and land prices sky-high, unused roofs are some of the few places in the most heavily populated areas for budding vegetable gardeners.

The money-obsessed city has been late to latch on to rooftop farming, which has been popular in cities such as Lon-don and New York for years.

While there are no official figures for the number of sites, as no licence is needed to set one up, anecdotal evidence suggests their popularity is growing. “I think urban farming is becoming more popular... we have grown bigger in a short time,” said Osbert Lam, the founder of “City Farm”, which has about 100 regular gardeners two years after opening.

There are 400 growing boxes on the 10,000-square-foot (930-square-metre) rooftop available to rent for between HK$150-200 ($20-25) a month each. “People who come to the farm are so happy -- It’s like a tranquilliser, it’s a way out,” added Lam.

Hide beetles eat carrion. But the scent of decomposing flesh on its own isn’t enough to attract young, virgin females of this species. The perfume must have another ingredient to get their attention: Male-beetle sex pheromones.

Hide beetles, known scientifi-cally as Dermestes maculates, are part of the parade of insects that arrive to feast on a corpse. They also breed and lay their eggs in this graveyard of sorts. Different species have preferences for dif-ferent states of decomposition. Because corpse-eating insects arrive predictably, forensic sci-entists can look to them for clues, such as when the corpse in ques-tion died.

Blow flies are among the first on the scene, for example. Hide beetles arrive later and feed on skin and ligaments, before breed-ing and leaving their larvae to feed.

The researchers led by Christian von Hoermann from Ulm Universi-ty, Germany, wanted to know what attracted young emerged female beetles to a new corpse.

JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose a former security chief on Tuesday as his new civil defense minister amid height-ened public debate over a possible strike on Iran. Avraham Dichter, who has served as internal security minister and head of the Shin Bet, Is-rael’s domestic intelligence agency, has said in the past he would prefer Israel not to go it alone in any attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Washington has urged Israel to al-low more time for diplomacy to rein in Iran’s nuclear programme, which Tehran says is peaceful. But Israeli officials have said lagging talks by major powers with Iran to reduce its uranium enrichment have given Tehran more time to come closer to developing a nuclear weapon.

Israeli commentators described Dichter, 59, as close to both Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak, the two top decision-makers in any future military action against Iran. Dichter was a member of the elite commando unit where they once served. Confirm-ing the appointment, Netanyahu said Dichter “will now have an important assignment to assist in what he has been involved in all his life, contribut-ing to state security.”

Vice Commerce Minister Chen Jian, writing in Communist Party mouthpiece the People’s Daily, said priority would be given to two economic zones China and North Korea set up just over a year ago and which would represent a rare major foray by isolated Pyongyang into international commerce.

The comments coincide with this week’s trip to China by Jang Song-thaek, the powerful uncle of young dictator Kim Jong-un and seen as likely to be a driving force for reforms.

“We will support big Chinese companies who are willing to in-vest in North Korea to broaden the economic and trade cooperation with North Korea, to push the two sides to upgrade two-way trade and investment structures and study the

feasibility of cooperation on big projects,” Chen wrote.

In a statement issued after a meeting between Chinese Com-merce Minister Chen Deming and Jang, the ministry said the joint economic zones had “entered a substantive development phase”. Their development has “important meaning for further consolidating and developing traditional friendly relations and ... for promoting regional peace and prosperity”, it added.

North Korea’s official media said Jang had gone to China to discuss commercial projects between the two countries. The trip is seen as the latest sign that Kim is looking seri-ously at ways to revive his reclusive country’s decaying economy which has been in decline for years and is

unable even in years of good har-vests to feed its 24 million people.

North Korea already relies heav-ily on China to support its economy, dragged down by decades of mis-management and international sanctions over its weapons pro-grammes.

China, for its part, lives in terror of a political or economic collapse in North Korea which could send a wave of refugees into its poor northeast. “Only North Korea’s economic opening up can truly ensure peace and stability on the Korean peninsula,” said Wei Zhiji-ang, an expert on the two Koreas at Zhongshan University in southern China.

Spanish-owned airports operator BAA said Tuesday that passenger traffic at Britain’s main airports fell last month as many Britons stayed at home in order to watch the Lon-don 2012 Olympic Games.

BAA, which is part-owned by Spanish transport infrastructure giant Ferrovial, said that it handled 9.6 million passengers in July at the group’s five British airports.

That marked a 4.1-percent de-cline from the same month of 2011, the group revealed in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

“The drop was more pronounced in the second half of the month and it is likely that the Olympics played a part, with UK passengers staying at home as well as non-Olympic visitors from overseas choosing to defer their journeys,” BAA added.

The London Olympics, which began on July 27, drew to a close on Sunday in spectacular closing cer-emony featuring The Who, the Spice Girls, George Michael and Brazilian football legend Pele. Britain won 29 golds at the Games -- its best per-formance since 1908 -- and finished third in the medal table behind only the United States and China.

According to Spokesperson of San-glah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, when met on Monday (Aug 13) said the need of tofu and soybean cake in Sanglah Hospital was not the same every day. “It highly depends on the demand of each room. Each patient requires different composition of nutrition and types of food. Therefore, the food depends on the patient’s condition and type of illness,” said Nariyantha.

When averaged, the Sanglah Hospital required about 250-500 pieces of tofu

per day. Every piece of tofu weighed 100 gram. Meanwhile the need of soybean cake reached 15 to 40 kg per day.

For the availability of foodstuff includ-ing the tofu and soybean cake, added Nariyantha, the Sanglah Hospital made cooperation with partner winning the pro-curement tender of foodstuff supply. By and large, the tender was held by Sanglah Hospital every three months. “So, the raw material needs are met by partner who had won the tender,” he explained.

On that account, all foodstuffs were prepared by partner. According to Nari-yantha, the Sanglah Hospital so far had no problems in getting the foodstuffs and was not hit by the impact of soybean price hike. “If tendered like that, the foodstuffs are then prepared by partner winning the tender. That’s why, Sanglah Hospital does not feel the rise in soybean price,” he explained. (san)

All the Klungkung Regency officials attended the carnival such as the Regent of Klungkung, I Wayan Candra, Deputy Regent Tjokorda Gede Agung, Chair-man of the Klungkung House AA Anom, as well as the whole range of regional leadership council and regional working units (SKPD) in Klungkung Regency.

Interestingly, the cultural carnival parade was begun with the arrival of the regent, deputy regent, chairman of the Klungkung House and regional leadership council by riding carriage from the Regent’s Office to the Puputan Klung-kung Square. Such an event was welcome very enthusiastically by most residents. It was vis-ible from the number of people thronging the streets and Puputan Klungkung Square where carnival took place.

Then, high school and vocational school students presented a parade of red-and-white flag, gebogan parade and customary attires parade. The carnival was also accompanied with baleganjur gamelan and fragmentary taking the sequel of Ramayana epic on the abduction of Sita by Ravana.

The Regent Candra positively welcomed the carnival involving the school children ranging from kindergarten to senior high/vocational high school. It indicated if the participants had an understanding on the Independence Day of the RI. A fashion store owned by Dewa Made Kartawan, 59, burned out and left the ruins only. Allegedly, the fire was caused by exploding water pump. There were no casualties in the incident. However, the store owner suffered a loss of over IDR 400 million.

Today, children have unlim-ited choices of games. They have been pampered by modern games, ranging from Turtle Ninja, Kung Fu, war games and many more. These can make them stay for hours in front of television or computer. Yet, behind this ease and enjoy-ment, they lose some values like creativity and do not know they have traditional games.

It is said so because there is a trend where children, both in urban and rural areas, begin to leave their traditional games. Many game options have been available in the form of CD, DVD, Internet and cartoon in television. Just by CD rental or buying the cheapest one and sitting down sweetly, they could enjoy the games they like best. If the games contain competition, they will compete against machine or some times against friends. Without realized, this may result in sight disorder where children should gaze the monitor and finally require thick glasses at earlier age.

Advancement is not always bad. However, parents should control them to what extent those games could drive good impact. Before the presence of these modern games, there were many traditional games. They are no less interesting than the modern ones. Many children even find it attractive and make them creative.

This event is just like a kaleidoscope highlighting a variety of traditional games that ever existed within the life of Ba-linese children. To play one of the games, children should first search for its materials by themselves at backyard or garden. Actually, it is here where the challenge of the games begins. Sometimes, they got injury because they are unable to use a knife properly. It did not matter as intriguing power has superseded it.

Among the parade, there was a space intended for children world where they displayed some bizarre games like coconut shell clog, walking on stilts, pulling friend by the sheath of areca nut, pulling rope in-group and two-wheeled toy where its stick carried on shoulder. Meanwhile, the heavier one was gal-livanting show by barong effigy.

To play the coconut shell clog, for instance, they should keep their balance well. Standing on the tips of coconut shell is not easy. Moreover, they have to maintain the harmony of steps with the pulling of rope connected to each coconut shell. When the pull and steps can go harmoniously, the player can walk

faster. Balance is also entailed in walking on stilts or tajog or egrang. This game is even riskier because the position of pedal is higher from the ground. However, when a player can operate these stilts properly it is more challenging and pleasant. The higher the pedal the more chal-lenging it is. Walking on stilts looks like a walking long-legged heron. It would be more interesting when passing through a muddy or knee-deep watery road. These games are often put into competition related to traditional sports.

Another game requiring coop-eration is pulling the sheath of areca nut. If the bean of areca nut is used by grandfathers or grandmothers

for ingredient of chewing betel, the sheath of it is used by their grandchildren to make ‘a pulling vehicle’. Yellow leaf signifies it has been mature. It is time for children to take it. They just need to leave out the ribs of leaf. The main rib is not cut as it will be used to pull. One child serves as passenger while an-other as driver who pulls the sheath. This role is exchanged so both can have an opportunity to enjoy the ‘comfort’ of this vehicle game.

Children also put an interest in dancing barong gallivanting show. For them, it has been designed a smaller-sized barong. Therefore, be-fore growing adult they have been in-troduced to art world of adult people.

By performing gallivanting show like this, they will obtain experience and earn money. However, the emphasis here is not on the money, but on the experience and fun.

Actually, there are more tra-ditional games that once lived in midst of Balinese community. I hope that Bali Arts Festival have revealed them one by one so young generation can know their tradi-tional heritages. Maybe, having watched or played modern games they could combine with the tradi-tional ones they have. LOS ANGELES — Americans are carrying more credit card debt than a year ago, yet the late-payment rate for card holders remains near an 18-year low, an analysis of consumer-credit data shows.

The average credit card debt per borrower in the U.S. grew about 6 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, credit reporting agency TransUnion said Tuesday.

At the same time, the rate of payments at least 90 days overdue inched higher to 0.63 percent from 0.60 percent in the same period last year, when the rate hit the lowest level in 18 years. Card delinquencies sank to 0.56 percent in the third quarter of 1994, the firm said.

The April-to-June figures reflect how consumers have been managing their credit card use since the start of the last recession toward the end of 2007.

Many borrowers have taken steps to save money and whittle down their debt. Among homeowners with a mortgage, many have made credit card bills a priority over their home loans and other financial obligations.

While late payments hover near lows not seen since the 1990s, cardholders have been racking up more debt.

In the second quarter, the average credit card debt per borrower rose 6 percent from a year earlier to $4,971, TransUnion said.

That’s still about 13 percent less than $5,719, the average credit card debt per borrower in the second quarter of 2009. The latest figure was essentially flat from the first quarter of this year.

Between 2009 and 2011, borrowers pulled back on using credit and made an effort to slash their debt.

Average credit card balances also rose on an annual basis in the first three months of the year, as hiring picked up nationally and consumer confidence im-proved. It’s too early to tell whether credit card debt will continue to climb, however.

About two-thirds of the layoffs will come from outside the United States, and some 30 of Motorola Mobility’s 90 global facilities will be shut, Google said.

The aim of the cuts is to simplify the Motorola line of mobile phones “from feature phones to more inno-vative and profitable devices.”

“These changes are designed to return Motorola’s mobile devices unit to profitability, after it lost

money in 14 of the last 16 quar-ters,” Google said in a statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The firm is likely to take a charge on severance payments of up to $275 million, mostly accounted for in the third quarter.

However Google warned inves-tors not to expect a firm rebound to profits for several quarters.

for $12.5 billion in May, eyeing both its mobile phone line, which uses Google’s Android platform, and some 17,000 valuable patents.

About one-fifth of Motorola Mo-bility’s 20,000 workers face getting pink slips.

The cuts will hit operations in Asia and India, focusing research and development on the existing units in Chicago, Sunnyvale and Beijing, the New York Times re-ported.

“While we expect this strategy to create new opportunities and help return Motorola’s mobile devices unit to profitability, we understand how hard these changes will be for the employees concerned,” a com-

pany spokesperson told AFP.“Motorola is committed to help-

ing them through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs,” the spokesperson said.

Motorola Mobility was created in 2011 when US-based Motorola Inc split the company into a mobile devices unit and a government and public safety division known as Motorola Solutions.

Google said it will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business unit that will be a licensee of Android.

Sales of Android-based smart-phones handily beat out Apple’s

hit iPhone in the first quarter of the year, and Android phones have been selling strongly in international markets as well.

But in the tablet market, Apple’s iPad continues to dominate over rivals including Android models.

Google sought control of Mo-torola’s phone line and its patents in the May takeover to boost its competitiveness against Apple in the booming smartphone and tablet market.

MUMBAI — Ford Motor Co.’s Indian subsidiary is recall-ing nearly 130,000 of its most popular cars. The manufactur-ing defects date back as far as 2008 and can cause fire and other problems, the company said late Monday.

Ford said it would examine 111,000 Ford Figo and Classic models manufactured between January 2008 and December 2010 for a faulty rear twist beam, which can compromise brake performance and make the vehicle inoperable.

Ford will also replace a hose in 17,655 Figo and Classic cars produced between September 2010 and February 2011 as a precautionary measure. The company says oil can leak from the hose, resulting in noxious fumes, smoke and in

extreme cases, fire.The company said no injuries have occurred as a result

of the defects.Like other global carmakers in India, Ford relies heavily

on local suppliers to keep costs down.Toyota, Tata Motors, Honda and Maruti Suzuki have all

had to recall cars in India in recent years, though none has been as big as the Ford recall. Ford’s compact Figo, launched in 2010, made the American auto giant a real player in India’s competitive small car market.

Ford has poured hundreds of millions of dollars into India, part of the company’s strategy to pursue growth in Asia over the next decade. In March, Ford laid the cornerstone for a new $1 billion dollar factory in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The fourth child is called Ketut. Ketut ---Tut means to follow or additional baby. The fifth baby is Wayan Balik (back to Wayan) and so forth. Sometimes Wayan is re-placed with Gede or Putu. They are connected to the caste system and family relationship. For example,

Gede and Putu are much used by family belonging to Pasek and Sengguhu clan. Both refer to the oldest child.

Gabriele’s lawyer, Carlo Fusco, told The Associated Press that the check had “by chance” ended up in a pile of the pope’s paperwork Gabriele had accumulated in his apartment. Fusco said his client “had never taken money or any other economic advan-tage” in his role as butler.

While the Vatican had insisted throughout the investigation that Ga-briele, a 45-year-old married layman who lives with his family in Vatican City, was the only person under investigation, the indictment also orders trial for Claudio Sciarpelletti, a 48-year-old computer expert in the Secretariat of State office charged with aiding and abetting the butler.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Fed-erico Lombardi told reporters that a three-judge panel would try the two defendants together. No date was set for the trial, which will be open to

reporters, but Lombardi said it would start at the very earliest in late Sep-tember, after the court returns from summer break.

The Holy See has been on a defen-sive footing since documents alleg-ing corruption and exposing power struggles began appearing in the Italian media in January. In May, the book “Sua Santita” (His Holiness) — by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi — was published containing dozens of documents from the pope’s desk, including letters written to him.

Lombardi said Monday that mag-istrates had not taken on the wider, more serious issue revealed by the leaked documents— alleged corrup-tion within the top ranks of the church. He said Vatican investigators would pursue other culprits, but sidestepped a question on whether a special panel of cardinals Benedict set up to deal with the scandal had made any inroads into the wider question of moral wrongdo-ing among those higher up. Benedict has reviewed the indictment, he said.

Meanwhile, Greg Burke, a U.S. television journalist recently hired by the Vatican as its senior communica-tions adviser, told the AP that the Holy See didn’t expect the ongoing judicial probe to turn up any mastermind.

The trial request and indictment basically lay out a script for what

could be Gabriele’s line of defense when he goes before the tribunal — a religiously inspired, misguided, would-be whistleblower.

Vatican Prosecutor Nicola Picardi, in seeking trial, quoted Gabriele as telling his interrogators after his ar-rest that he thought that the role of whistle-blower in the church “belongs to the Holy Spirit, whom I felt in some way had entered into me.” A psychological expert who examined Gabriele during the probe concluded that he was unsuited for the job, which went from dawn to dusk and included serving the pope meals, helping him get dressed, attending morning Mass with Benedict and other assignments. The indictment said the experts had concluded that Gabriele suffered from “a grave psychological unease characterized by restlessness, tension, anger and frustrations.”

The indictment quoted Gabriele as telling investigators that he was “motivated by my deep faith and by the desire that in the church light is shed on everything.”

Vatican prosecutor Nicola Picardi quoted the butler as telling his interro-gators that “seeing evil and corruption everywhere in the Church ... I was sure that a shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the Church back on the right track.”

A British couple have claimed a record 190-million-euro (£149 million, $235 million) prize in the EuroMillions lottery, officials announced on Monday.

Britain’s National Lottery said the couple were from Suffolk in southeast England.

They are expected to reveal their identities on Tuesday and set out their plans for the future.

Their jackpot beats that won by Scottish couple Colin and Chris Weir, who became Europe’s biggest ever lottery winners in July last year when they scooped 185 million euros.

But the current euro conversion rate means the prize is worth less in pounds than the £161 million won by the Weirs.

“A couple from Haverhill, Suffolk, have won the UK’s second biggest ever lottery prize,” a National Lottery spokesman said.

“They were the only (jackpot) winners in Friday’s EuroMillions draw and have banked an amazing £148,656,000.”

The couple had a one in 116,531,800 chance of holding the lucky numbers.

Across Europe, 14 tickets selected six correct numbers, and will win more than 2,641,000 euros each.

The EuroMillions lottery, launched in 2004, is now played by nine countries across western Europe: Austria, Belgium, Britain, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

Five of the top ten jackpots in the history of EuroMillions have been British. More British players tend to take part when the jackpot is particularly large.

A moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the far northern region of Pakistan early Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake’s epicentre, at a depth of 35 kilometres (21.7 miles), was recorded some 119 kilometres from Mingaora in the northern Swat District and 130 kilometres from Gilgit in Kashmir.

The quake struck near the border between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and India’s Jammu and Kashmir state around 1:30 am local time (2030 GMT on Monday).

Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005 that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 mil-lion homeless, mainly in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

“We need a total budget of US $1.6 million to implement this technical cooperation plan,” Sungho Choi, the resident repre-sentative of the South Korea Inter-national Cooperation Agency said during the signing of the coopera-tion agreement at Hidayat`s office in Jakarta earlier this month.

Choi added that the Korean agency will allocate US $1.5 mil-lion to finance the purchase of tools for laboratory tests, expert assistance and training, while the Indonesian government will provide Rp950 million to support other parts of the program, which is expected to conclude by 2014.

Meanwhile, Aryanto Sagala, the Industry Ministry’s Industry Climate and Quality Policy Board chief said Indonesia has chosen to tie up with South Korea because of the latter’s

reputation as one of the best textile producers in the world.

He expressed hope that the tie up will enhance the global competitive-ness of Indonesian textiles.

New Zealand shot putter Valerie Adams said on Tuesday she was delighted to win Olympic gold after her rival was disqualified but felt cheated by not receiving the medal in front of the London crowds.

Adams, the 2008 Olympic and three-time world champion, had resigned herself to the relative disappointment of silver before Olympic officials announced her Belarussian arch-rival Nadezhda Ostapchuk had been disqualified for doping.

Adams, 27, said she was speechless when New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) chef de mission Dave Currie told her that Ostapchuk had been stripped of the gold and she was now the Olympic shot put champion.

“I asked Dave if the news was for real, and then just burst into tears,” she said in a statement on the NZOC website. “I was over-whelmed that I’d won gold.”

Adams said she was pleased that anti-doping systems at the London Games had worked, but felt Ostapchuk had denied her a moment that few athletes ever get to experience.

“She got the glory of the 80,000 people in the sta-dium

when she received the gold medal when in actual fact she shouldn’t have been the one to receive it,” Adams told commercial radio.

Details of when Adams will receive her gold have not been fi-nalised, but the shot putter said she wanted the ceremony to include the New Zealand anthem playing and the national flag flying high.

Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given is retiring from international foot-ball after winning a record 125 caps for his country, he said on Monday. “After a lot of thought and consideration, I have made the most difficult decision to retire from international football,” the Aston Villa player said on his personal Twitter account.

“It’s been a great honour and privilege to play and on occasion captain the team,” added the 36-year-old. “I wish to thank all the players, managers, staff and most importantly the most wonderful fans in the world.”

The Football Association of Ireland confirmed Given’s decision on its website (fai.ie), explaining that Given had informed Irish coach Giovanni Trapattoni of his decision. The Italian paid tribute to the former Newcastle United and Manchester City player’s 16-year international career.

“I understand the difficult deci-sion that Shay had to make, and appreciate all of his efforts during his international career,” Trapat-toni said. “He is a strong player, with a great character and his love

of playing for his country always shone through.

“It has been a pleasure to work with him during my time with the team. I wish him the very best in his future.” Given made his inter-national debut under coach Mick McCarthy in 1996 against Russia and quickly established himself as Ireland’s first-choice keeper. SAO PAULO - Adidas has an-nounced the short list of potential names for the 2014 World Cup ball and are asking fans to vote for their preferred candidate of quintessential Brazilian choices.

The three names are Portuguese words and all are feminine, conform-ing to the Brazilian stereotype of the ball as a woman, to be caressed and cared for.

One of the finalists is Carnavalesca, a word describing someone who plans or participates in the country’s raucous carnival celebrations.

Another is Bossa Nova, a reference to the famous samba-jazz music genre popularised in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Finally Brazuca, which is a playful

slang word for native Brazilians that Adidas said summed up the country’s irreverence.

The sporting goods firm, a World Cup sponsor, is giving fans the chance to vote for one of the options on its Brazilian Web page at www.adidas.com.br/nome-da-bola-2014.

MOSCOW - Former Romania and Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu has quit as coach of Russian Premier League club Kuban Krasnodar, he said on Tuesday. “I’ve been here three years and I’ve done everything possible, the best I could,” the 44-year-old was quoted as saying by the club’s website (www.fckuban.ru).

Kuban’s wealthy owner Oleg Mkrtychan said he was taken by surprise at Petrescu’s resignation. “Right after our win over (city rivals) Krasnodar (last Friday), Petrescu came to me and said he wanted to leave. I had never expected to hear him say this,” said Mkrtychan.

“I’m very sad to lose Petrescu but we must respect his decision because he has done great things for this club.” The 2-1 victory in the Krasnodar derby lifted Kuban

to eighth place in the table with six points from four games.

Petrescu was named Kuban coach in December 2009 and the following season the side from the Black Sea region won a promotion to Russia’s top flight. He extended his contract until 2015 in November after guid-ing the club to the top half of the league table.

The new contract included im-proved terms for Petrescu after he was hailed as “our best player” by the club’s bosses. “I can be proud of all the things we have done here but now I need a new challenge,” the Romanian said. In an interview with Reuters last year, Petrescu said he hoped to return to Chelsea in the future.

Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given is retiring from international foot-ball after winning a record 125 caps for his country, he said on Monday. “After a lot of thought and consideration, I have made the most difficult decision to retire from international football,” the Aston Villa player said on his personal Twitter account.

“It’s been a great honour and privilege to play and on occasion captain the team,” added the 36-year-old. “I wish to thank all the players, managers, staff and most importantly the most wonderful fans in the world.”

The Football Association of Ireland confirmed Given’s decision on its website (fai.ie), explaining that Given had informed Irish coach Giovanni Trapattoni of his decision. The Italian paid tribute to the former Newcastle United and Manchester City player’s 16-year international career.

“I understand the difficult deci-sion that Shay had to make, and appreciate all of his efforts during his international career,” Trapat-toni said. “He is a strong player, with a great character and his love

of playing for his country always shone through.

“It has been a pleasure to work with him during my time with the team. I wish him the very best in his future.” Given made his inter-national debut under coach Mick McCarthy in 1996 against Russia and quickly established himself as Ireland’s first-choice keeper. He played in all his country’s games at the 2002 World Cup, when Ireland progressed from a tough group before losing to Spain in the first knockout round.

Given’s other major tournament appearance was at the 2012 Euro-pean Championship, part of an Irish side that lost all three group games. Trapattoni, keen to try out younger players as he looks towards the 2014 World Cup qualifying cam-paign, did not pick Given for this week’s friendly against Serbia.

According to the website, Given has informed the FAI that he would “happily return to assist with goal-keeping duties” should there ever be any squad emergency.

Sunderland’s Keiren Westwood, who has 10 international appear-ances to his name, is widely ex-pected to be Given’s successor as the Irish number one.

TOKYO - Japan forward Shinji Kagawa believes his pre-season move to Manchester United will make him a better player as he was mobbed on arrival for Wednesday’s friendly against Venezuela.

‘Kagawa fever’ hit the northern city of Sapporo as the 23-year-old swept through the airport lobby, fans and television cameras jostling to get near the Japan playmaker.

“You’re playing everyday in

SAO PAULO - Adidas has an-nounced the short list of potential names for the 2014 World Cup ball and are asking fans to vote for their preferred candidate of quintessential Brazilian choices.

The three names are Portuguese words and all are feminine, conform-ing to the Brazilian stereotype of the ball as a woman, to be caressed and cared for.

One of the finalists is Carnavalesca, a word describing someone who plans or participates in the country’s raucous carnival celebrations.

Another is Bossa Nova, a reference to the famous samba-jazz music genre popularised in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s and 1960s.

Finally Brazuca, which is a playful

slang word for native Brazilians that Adidas said summed up the country’s irreverence.

The sporting goods firm, a World Cup sponsor, is giving fans the chance to vote for one of the options on its Brazilian Web page at www.adidas.com.br/nome-da-bola-2014.

The concept of naming the World Cup ball began in Mexico in 1970 with the Telstar. Among the more memorable balls in the years since were the Tango in Argentina in 1978, the Azteca in Mexico in 1986 and the Jabulani in South Africa in 2010.

Romario, the 1994 World Cup winner turned Congressman who has previously criticised Brazil’s prepara-tions, expressed surprise at the absence of Gorduchinha, a word that means little chubby. Adidas said voting closes on Sept. 2.

Tamblang Village in Kubu-tambahan Subdistrict is one of the villages which are quite developed in terms of economy in Buleleng. Such economic progress is indicated by four major banks opening a unit of-fice at the village and coupled with a cooperative unit with a substantial turnover.

One of the sectors growing significantly and giving contribu-tion to the economic advance-ment of the village is home industry sector. Local people independently work on home industry activities, such as pro-ducing taffy cake, peas and oth-ers. To further enhance the rural economy, local residents are now also building community-based nature tourism by relying on the natural beauty such as waterfalls and the curve of the hills.

Headman of Tamblang, Nen-gah Sudarsana, said the potential of home industry at his village had even gone national. For example, taffy cake and various fresh snacks had penetrated do-mestic market in Bali and Java. Another product that managed to uplift the name of the village spreading across 728 hectares was the production of peas. It even had three factories outside Tamblang, namely in Denpasar, Bandung (West Java) and Jakar-

ta. “Tamblang as a trading center in Kubutambahan subdistrict has been able to arouse the public interest in entrepreneurship in accordance with its flagship product,” said Sudarsana.

Having been success with the potential of home industry, the Headman Nengah Sudarsana then glanced to develop tourism, especially waterfall attraction located at Kelampuak hamlet, namely the Carat Waterfall.

At location of the Carat Wa-terfall sits two waterfalls of large and small size. The larger (higher) waterfall is under the smaller one. The waterfall itself has a height of about 60 meters. Meanwhile, the higher waterfall is about 100 me-ters high and surrounded by high and steep cliff. Therefore, many visitors can only see the higher waterfall from a distance because it is difficult to reach. According to Headman Sudarsana, many investors had come to develop the waterfall attraction.

This Carat Waterfall can be an alternative tourism in North Bali when supported by the establish-ment of supporting facilities that are now becoming the main problem for the tourism develop-ment. If the object is developed and equipped with adequate in-frastructure it will surely become a source of regionally generated revenue (PAD) from the tourism sector.

Kvitova defeated China’s Li Na 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in a 2-hour, 17-minute final on Monday night. The tourna-ment is also at the start of the hard-court season leading into the U.S. Open at the end of the month.

‘’It’s great,’’ said Kvitova, who won six titles last year, including Wimbledon. ‘’I finally won a title this year. It was a good final, a good fight from both sides.’’ The win avenged a loss to Li at Sydney this year and evened their all-time matchup at two victories.

‘’It was a tough match, this was a tennis war,’’ Li said. ‘’Both players played good. ‘’She’s very tough. She

plays the ball so deep. I felt I was al-ways on defense. The last two matches I felt I could be aggressive on the court, but this one I felt I was 70 percent of the time on defense.’’ The match pit-ted two Grand Slam champions from 2011, as Li took the French Open. Li is 0-3 in tournament finals this year.

Kvitova, seeded fifth, struggled at the start, hitting several balls long. She fell behind 3-1 before she found the range with her forehand and charged back to take the lead. Even then, she needed to save three break points to take a 6-5 lead, then won the set on her fifth break point against the 10th-seeded Li. Li took the first 16 points of

the second set to grab a 4-0 lead before Kvitova finally held serve.

But Kvitova got her game back for the third, hammering shots deep in the hard court that Li could not re-turn. Li didn’t help herself by hitting two easy smashes into the net. Her serve was broken at 3-2 when she doubled faulted, then had a return fly wide off the rim of her racket.

‘’Between the second and third sets when I was in the locker room chang-ing my clothes, I knew I had to attack the balls and play much faster than in the second set, and have a better first serve percentage,’’ said Kvitova, who punctuated the win with an ace on match point. Kvitova reached the final with a three-set victory over seventh-seeded Caroline Wozniacki.

Li had a tougher route, getting past Eugenie Bouchard, eighth-seeded Sara Errani and second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska just to reach the semifinals. There she roared back from a 5-1 third-set deficit to defeat Lucie Safarova.

New Zealand shot putter Valerie Adams said on Tuesday she was delighted to win Olympic gold after her rival was disqualified but felt cheated by not receiving the medal in front of the London crowds.

Adams, the 2008 Olympic and three-time world champion, had resigned herself to the relative disappointment of silver before Olympic officials announced her Belarussian arch-rival Nadezhda Ostapchuk had been disqualified for doping.

Adams, 27, said she was speechless when New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) chef de mission Dave Currie told her that Ostapchuk had been stripped of the gold and she was now the Olympic shot put champion.

“I asked Dave if the news was for real, and then just burst into tears,” she said in a statement on the NZOC website. “I was over-whelmed that I’d won gold.”

Adams said she was pleased that anti-doping systems at the London Games had worked, but felt Ostapchuk had denied her a moment that few athletes ever get to experience.

“She got the glory of the 80,000 people in the sta-dium

when she received the gold medal when in actual fact she shouldn’t have been the one to receive it,” Adams told commercial radio.

Details of when Adams will receive her gold have not been fi-nalised, but the shot putter said she wanted the ceremony to include the New Zealand anthem playing and the national flag flying high.

“I think that’s important be-cause I’m a very, very proud New Zealander and that was a moment that she robbed me of,” said the athlete, who is still in Europe training.

Adams had no sympathy for Ostapchuk, who has said she will appeal the International Olympic Committee’s decision to strip her of the title.

“I say good riddance,” Adams told TVNZ, adding: “I don’t want to waste any more of my energy or breath on her.”

The indictment accused Paolo Gabriele, a butler arrested at the Vatican in May, of grand theft — a charge that could bring up to six years in jail, although the pope could pardon his once-trusted aide after any conviction.

Gabriele was also accused of taking a check for €100,000 (about $125,000) made out to Benedict and donated by a Spanish Catholic univer-sity from the papal quarters.

Gabriele’s lawyer, Carlo Fusco, told The Associated Press that the check had “by chance” ended up in a pile of the pope’s paperwork Gabriele had accumulated in his apartment. Fusco said his client “had never taken money or any other economic advan-tage” in his role as butler.

While the Vatican had insisted throughout the investigation that Ga-briele, a 45-year-old married layman who lives with his family in Vatican City, was the only person under investigation, the indictment also orders trial for Claudio Sciarpelletti, a 48-year-old computer expert in the Secretariat of State office charged with aiding and abetting the butler.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Fed-erico Lombardi told reporters that a three-judge panel would try the two defendants together. No date was set for the trial, which will be open to

reporters, but Lombardi said it would start at the very earliest in late Sep-tember, after the court returns from summer break.

The Holy See has been on a defen-sive footing since documents alleg-ing corruption and exposing power struggles began appearing in the Italian media in January. In May, the book “Sua Santita” (His Holiness) — by Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi — was published containing dozens of documents from the pope’s desk, including letters written to him.

Lombardi said Monday that mag-istrates had not taken on the wider, more serious issue revealed by the leaked documents— alleged corrup-tion within the top ranks of the church. He said Vatican investigators would pursue other culprits, but sidestepped a question on whether a special panel of cardinals Benedict set up to deal with the scandal had made any inroads into the wider question of moral wrongdo-ing among those higher up. Benedict has reviewed the indictment, he said.

Meanwhile, Greg Burke, a U.S. television journalist recently hired by the Vatican as its senior communica-tions adviser, told the AP that the Holy See didn’t expect the ongoing judicial probe to turn up any mastermind.

The trial request and indictment basically lay out a script for what

could be Gabriele’s line of defense when he goes before the tribunal — a religiously inspired, misguided, would-be whistleblower.

Vatican Prosecutor Nicola Picardi, in seeking trial, quoted Gabriele as telling his interrogators after his ar-rest that he thought that the role of whistle-blower in the church “belongs to the Holy Spirit, whom I felt in some way had entered into me.” A psychological expert who examined Gabriele during the probe concluded that he was unsuited for the job, which went from dawn to dusk and included serving the pope meals, helping him get dressed, attending morning Mass with Benedict and other assignments. The indictment said the experts had concluded that Gabriele suffered from “a grave psychological unease characterized by restlessness, tension, anger and frustrations.”

The indictment quoted Gabriele as telling investigators that he was “motivated by my deep faith and by the desire that in the church light is shed on everything.”

Vatican prosecutor Nicola Picardi quoted the butler as telling his interro-gators that “seeing evil and corruption everywhere in the Church ... I was sure that a shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the Church back on the right track.”

A British couple have claimed a record 190-million-euro (£149 million, $235 million) prize in the EuroMillions lottery, officials announced on Monday.

Britain’s National Lottery said the couple were from Suffolk in southeast England.

They are expected to reveal their identities on Tuesday and set out their plans for the future.

Their jackpot beats that won by Scottish couple Colin and Chris Weir, who became Europe’s biggest ever lottery winners in July last year when they scooped 185 million euros.

But the current euro conversion rate means the prize is worth less in pounds than the £161 million won by the Weirs.

“A couple from Haverhill, Suffolk, have won the UK’s second biggest ever lottery prize,” a National Lottery spokesman said.

“They were the only (jackpot) winners in Friday’s EuroMillions draw and have banked an amazing £148,656,000.”

The couple had a one in 116,531,800 chance of holding the lucky numbers.

Across Europe, 14 tickets selected six correct numbers, and will win more than 2,641,000 euros each.

The EuroMillions lottery, launched in 2004, is now played by nine countries across western Europe: Austria, Belgium, Britain, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.

A moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck the far northern region of Pakistan early Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The quake’s epicentre, at a depth of 35 kilometres (21.7 miles), was recorded some 119 kilometres from Mingaora in the northern Swat District and 130 kilometres from Gilgit in Kashmir.

The quake struck near the border between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and India’s Jammu and Kashmir state around 1:30 am local time (2030 GMT on Monday).

“We need a total budget of US $1.6 million to implement this technical cooperation plan,” Sungho Choi, the resident repre-sentative of the South Korea Inter-national Cooperation Agency said during the signing of the coopera-tion agreement at Hidayat`s office in Jakarta earlier this month.

Choi added that the Korean agency will allocate US $1.5 mil-lion to finance the purchase of tools for laboratory tests, expert assistance and training, while the Indonesian government will provide Rp950 million to support other parts of the program, which is expected to conclude by 2014.

Meanwhile, Aryanto Sagala, the Industry Ministry’s Industry Climate and Quality Policy Board chief said Indonesia has chosen to tie up with South Korea because of the latter’s

Just by CD rental or buying the cheapest one and sitting down sweetly, they could enjoy the games they like best. If the games contain competition, they will compete against machine or some times against friends. Without realized, this may result in sight disorder where children should gaze the monitor and finally require thick glasses at earlier age.

Advancement is not always bad. However, parents should control them to what extent those games could drive good impact. Before the presence of these modern games, there were many traditional games. LOS ANGELES — Americans are carrying more credit card debt than a year ago, yet the late-payment rate for card holders remains near an 18-year low, an analysis of consumer-credit data shows.

The average credit card debt per borrower in the U.S. grew about 6 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier, credit reporting agency TransUnion said Tuesday.

At the same time, the rate of payments at least 90 days overdue inched higher to 0.63 percent from 0.60 percent in the same period last year, when the rate hit the lowest level in 18 years. Card delinquencies sank to 0.56 percent in the third quarter of 1994, the firm said.

The April-to-June figures reflect how consumers have been managing their credit card use since the start of the last recession toward the end of 2007.

Many borrowers have taken steps to save money and whittle down their debt. Among homeowners with a mortgage, many have made credit card bills a priority over their home loans and other financial obligations.

While late payments hover near lows not seen since the 1990s, cardholders have been racking up more debt.

In the second quarter, the average credit card debt per borrower rose 6 percent from a year earlier to $4,971, TransUnion said.

That’s still about 13 percent less than $5,719, the average credit card debt per borrower in the second quarter of 2009. The latest figure was essentially flat from the first quarter of this year.

Between 2009 and 2011, borrowers pulled back on using credit and made an effort to slash their debt.

Average credit card balances also rose on an annual basis in the first three months of the year, as hiring picked up nationally and consumer confidence im-proved. It’s too early to tell whether credit card debt will continue to climb, however.

About two-thirds of the layoffs will come from outside the United States, and some 30 of Motorola Mobility’s 90 global facilities will be shut, Google said.

The aim of the cuts is to simplify the Motorola line of mobile phones “from feature phones to more inno-vative and profitable devices.”

“These changes are designed to return Motorola’s mobile devices unit to profitability, after it lost

money in 14 of the last 16 quar-ters,” Google said in a statement to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The firm is likely to take a charge on severance payments of up to $275 million, mostly accounted for in the third quarter.

However Google warned inves-tors not to expect a firm rebound to profits for several quarters.

Google said it will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business unit that will be a licensee of Android.

hit iPhone in the first quarter of the year, and Android phones have been selling strongly in international markets as well.

MUMBAI — Ford Motor Co.’s Indian subsidiary is recall-ing nearly 130,000 of its most popular cars. The manufactur-ing defects date back as far as 2008 and can cause fire and other problems, the company said late Monday.

Ford said it would examine 111,000 Ford Figo and Classic models manufactured between January 2008 and December 2010 for a faulty rear twist beam, which can compromise brake performance and make the vehicle inoperable.

Ford will also replace a hose in 17,655 Figo and Classic cars produced between September 2010 and February 2011 as a precautionary measure. The company says oil can leak from the hose, resulting in noxious fumes, smoke and in

extreme cases, fire.The company said no injuries have occurred as a result

of the defects.Like other global carmakers in India, Ford relies heavily

on local suppliers to keep costs down.Toyota, Tata Motors, Honda and Maruti Suzuki have all

had to recall cars in India in recent years, though none has been as big as the Ford recall. Ford’s compact Figo, launched in 2010, made the American auto giant a real player in India’s competitive small car market.

Gede or Putu are all Balinese initial names. They denote the numbers of the children. Wayan is derived from Waya (Wayahan or Wayah) meaning old (older). Made (Madya) means middle and sometimes is replaced with Nengah (tengah = middle) so it denotes the second child. Nyoman Anom (new or young) stands for the third baby.

JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose a former security chief on Tuesday as his new civil defense minister amid height-ened public debate over a possible strike on Iran. Avraham Dichter, who has served as internal security minister and head of the Shin Bet, Is-rael’s domestic intelligence agency, has said in the past he would prefer Israel not to go it alone in any attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Washington has urged Israel to al-low more time for diplomacy to rein in Iran’s nuclear programme, which Tehran says is peaceful. But Israeli officials have said lagging talks by major powers with Iran to reduce its uranium enrichment have given Tehran more time to come closer to developing a nuclear weapon.

Israeli commentators described Dichter, 59, as close to both Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak, the two top decision-makers in any future military action against Iran. Dichter was a member of the elite commando unit where they once served. Confirm-ing the appointment, Netanyahu said Dichter “will now have an important assignment to assist in what he has been involved in all his life, contribut-ing to state security.”

Vice Commerce Minister Chen Jian, writing in Communist Party mouthpiece the People’s Daily, said priority would be given to two economic zones China and North Korea set up just over a year ago and which would represent a rare major foray by isolated Pyongyang into international commerce.

The comments coincide with this week’s trip to China by Jang Song-thaek, the powerful uncle of young dictator Kim Jong-un and seen as likely to be a driving force for reforms.

“We will support big Chinese companies who are willing to in-vest in North Korea to broaden the economic and trade cooperation with North Korea, to push the two sides to upgrade two-way trade and investment structures and study the

feasibility of cooperation on big projects,” Chen wrote.

In a statement issued after a meeting between Chinese Com-merce Minister Chen Deming and Jang, the ministry said the joint economic zones had “entered a substantive development phase”. Their development has “important meaning for further consolidating and developing traditional friendly relations and ... for promoting regional peace and prosperity”, it added.

North Korea’s official media said Jang had gone to China to discuss commercial projects between the two countries. The trip is seen as the latest sign that Kim is looking seri-ously at ways to revive his reclusive country’s decaying economy which has been in decline for years and is

unable even in years of good har-vests to feed its 24 million people.

North Korea already relies heav-ily on China to support its economy, dragged down by decades of mis-management and international sanctions over its weapons pro-grammes.

China, for its part, lives in terror of a political or economic collapse in North Korea which could send a wave of refugees into its poor northeast. “Only North Korea’s economic opening up can truly ensure peace and stability on the Korean peninsula,” said Wei Zhiji-ang, an expert on the two Koreas at Zhongshan University in southern China.

Spanish-owned airports operator BAA said Tuesday that passenger traffic at Britain’s main airports fell last month as many Britons stayed at home in order to watch the Lon-don 2012 Olympic Games.

BAA, which is part-owned by Spanish transport infrastructure giant Ferrovial, said that it handled 9.6 million passengers in July at the group’s five British airports.

That marked a 4.1-percent de-cline from the same month of 2011, the group revealed in a statement to the London Stock Exchange.

“The drop was more pronounced in the second half of the month and it is likely that the Olympics played a part, with UK passengers staying at home as well as non-Olympic visitors from overseas choosing to defer their journeys,” BAA added.

Price hike of soybean and entering the Eid holiday do not affect the availability of tofu and soybean cake in Sanglah Hos-pital. Both foodstuffs made from soybean are indeed two of the main dishes usually served to patients hospitalized in Sanglah Hospital.

According to Spokesperson of San-glah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, when met on Monday (Aug 13) said the need of tofu and soybean cake in Sanglah Hospital was not the same every day. “It highly depends on the demand of each room. Each patient requires different composition of nutrition and types of food. Therefore, the food depends on the patient’s condition and type of illness,” said Nariyantha.

When averaged, the Sanglah Hospital required about 250-500 pieces of tofu

per day. Every piece of tofu weighed 100 gram. Meanwhile the need of soybean cake reached 15 to 40 kg per day.

For the availability of foodstuff includ-ing the tofu and soybean cake, added Nariyantha, the Sanglah Hospital made cooperation with partner winning the pro-curement tender of foodstuff supply. By and large, the tender was held by Sanglah Hospital every three months. “So, the raw material needs are met by partner who had won the tender,” he explained.

On that account, all foodstuffs were prepared by partner. According to Nari-yantha, the Sanglah Hospital so far had no problems in getting the foodstuffs and was not hit by the impact of soybean price hike. “If tendered like that, the foodstuffs are then prepared by partner winning the tender. That’s why, Sanglah Hospital does not feel the rise in soybean price,” he explained. (san)

Interestingly, the cultural carnival parade was begun with the arrival of the regent, deputy regent, chairman of the Klungkung House and regional leadership council by riding carriage from the Regent’s Office to the Puputan Klung-kung Square. It is one of several such sites that have sprung up in Hong Kong’s con-crete jungle, as the appetite for organic produce grows and people seek ways to escape one of the most densely populated places on earth. “I am hap-pier eating what I grow rather than food I buy from supermarkets,” said Melanie Lam, a 28-year-old nurse, who comes to the “City Farm” in the Quarry Bay district of Hong Kong’s main island about twice a week.

“Compared to vegetables from the supermarket, vegetables that I plant are sweeter and fresher. It gives me a greater sense of satisfaction.”

With most of the southern Chinese territory’s seven million people living in tower blocks and land prices sky-high, unused roofs are some of the few places in the most heavily populated areas for budding vegetable gardeners.

The money-obsessed city has been late to latch on to rooftop farming, which has been popular in cities such as Lon-don and New York for years.

While there are no official figures for the number of sites, as no licence is needed to set one up, anecdotal evidence suggests their popularity is growing. “I think urban farming is becoming more popular... we have grown bigger in a short time,” said Osbert Lam, the founder of “City Farm”, which has about 100 regular gardeners two years after opening.

There are 400 growing boxes on the 10,000-square-foot (930-square-metre) rooftop available to rent for between HK$150-200 ($20-25) a month each. “People who come to the farm are so happy -- It’s like a tranquilliser, it’s a way out,” added Lam.

Hide beetles eat carrion. But the scent of decomposing flesh on its own isn’t enough to attract young, virgin females of this species. The perfume must have another ingredient to get their attention: Male-beetle sex pheromones.

Hide beetles, known scientifi-cally as Dermestes maculates, are part of the parade of insects that arrive to feast on a corpse. They also breed and lay their eggs in this graveyard of sorts. Different species have preferences for dif-ferent states of decomposition. Because corpse-eating insects arrive predictably, forensic sci-entists can look to them for clues, such as when the corpse in ques-tion died.

Blow flies are among the first on the scene, for example. Hide beetles arrive later and feed on skin and ligaments, before breed-ing and leaving their larvae to feed.

The researchers led by Christian von Hoermann from Ulm Universi-ty, Germany, wanted to know what attracted young emerged female beetles to a new corpse.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

The traders that did selling in Su-kawati Art Market were charged with daily levy pursuant to Re-gional Regulation. Each trader was charged at IDR 1,000 per square meter. Such levy could be paid daily, weekly or monthly. Despite the economic condition in the Sukawati Art Market de-creased, the traders remained to occupy their stalls and kiosks. NEW YORK — Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” will open the 50th annual New York Film Festival. The Film Society of Lincoln Center announced Monday that Lee’s adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Yann Martel will premiere at the festival on Sept. 28.

Lee, whose “The Ice Storm” opened the festival in 1997, is only the fourth

filmmaker to twice take the opening night slot. Robert Altman, Pedro Almodovar and Francois Truffaut also share in the distinc-tion. The 3-D film, a fantasy about a boy marooned on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, is due in theaters Nov. 21.

The New York Film Festival runs Sept. 28 to Oct. 14. The Film Society earlier announced that Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight” will close the festival. The full slate will be announced later.

Division Head of Forestry, Tatang Priatna, with permission of the Head of Buleleng Forestry and Estate Agency, Komang Gede Yasa, said on Monday (Aug 13) that based on the report copy regarding the forest damage received from the Forest Management Area (KPH) of West Bali, 15 hectares of forest in the area were damaged and its condition grew critical. After the fire, the total damage was 10 hectares located in the area of Melanting Temple and other five hectares located in the west of Pulaki Temple, Banyupoh village, Gerokgak subdistrict.

As a result of the fire, condition of the forest previously classified into critical and rocky forest, now after the fire was getting more critical. “By all means, the condition of forest land will be getting more critical. Before the fire, the forest area was indeed quite rocky,” he said.

According to Tatang, rehabilita-tion after the fire for two times could be done. However, the agency had no authority to restore it alone. The agency along with KPH was just wait-ing for further instruction from the Bali Forestry Agency. It was carried out because the forest supervision and

management had now been handled by KPH in accordance with the policy of the Bali Government. “We cannot directly program the rehabilitation. Moreover, the authority of supervision and management is now held by KPH. Nevertheless, we will do the rehabili-tation against the damage together,” he explained.

On the other hand, Tatang said, it was actually difficult to rehabili-tate the forest in West Buleleng as condition of the forest was different from forests in other areas. It had no longer soil layer and only con-sisted of hard rocks. If forced, the rehabilitation would cost too much. Besides, the rehabilitation made would require a special treatment for the plants grown in the forest area. “Such condition has lasted long and it needs special rehabilitation. Of course, it requires a lot of budgets,” he explained.

MOSCOW — A magnitude 7.7 earthquake that hit waters off Russia’s Pacific island of Sakhalin on Tuesday inflicted no casualties or damage, Russian officials said.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry’s branch on Sakhalin said the quake was centered in the Sea of Okhotsk about 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Poronaysk, Russia, at a depth of more than 600 kilometers (373 miles).

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at 1 p.m. local time Tuesday, had a magnitude of 7.7, while the Russian ministry put it at 6.3.

“There have been no victims or damage,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the quake was felt as mag-nitude 2 to 3 shocks in towns and villages on Sakhalin. The ministry said that there was no danger of tsunami and that aftershocks were unlikely.
