The casting of Hollywood A-lister Ben Af-fleck as the new Batman sparked fan outrage Fri-day, with petitions calling for the coveted role to be recast and widespread howling on Twitter.

Warner Bros. announced Thursday that Affleck -- who earlier this year was the darling of Tinsel-town when his “Argo” took home the Oscar for best picture -- would next don the Dark Knight’s cape.

Affleck’s debut as the savior of Gotham will come in a film slated for release in 2015, and also to feature Henry Cavill as Superman. Zack Snyder is to direct.

The Batman recast is not the first. Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and, most re-

cently, Christian Bale, have all played the role. But fans cried foul, with more than 20,000 people

signing a petition at change.org calling on Warner Bros. to ditch the 41-year-old star.

“His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman,” the petition says.

“His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not re-motely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”

Another petition was posted on the White House web-site for several hours before being removed.

On Twitter, the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAf-fleck was trending. Many Internet users proposed other actors, from Josh Brolin to Affleck pal Matt Damon to -- bizarrely -- Meryl Streep.

BaBy North West has made her television debut. Kanye West showed a photo Friday of his 2-month-old daughter with Kim Kardashian on Kris Jenner’s Fox show, “Kris.” The family matriarch also posted an image of her grand-daughter on Twitter.

Though cameras constantly follow the Kardashian clan, this is the first time the newest member of the family has been publicly unveiled. The photo shows a brown-haired baby reaching toward the camera.

West also discussed fatherhood and his relationship with Kardashian. He called her “my joy” and said “she brought my new joy into the world.”

But he acknowledged being a new dad in the spotlight isn’t easy.

“I’m supposed to be this musical genius and everything,” he said, “but I really can’t work the car seat that well.”

He said parenting has brought him and Kar-dashian closer because “there’s someone more important to us than us for the first time.”

The former “30 Rock” star already is the father of a 17-year-old daugh-ter, Ireland, from his previous marriage to actress Kim Basinger.

Hilaria Baldwin is a special correspondent for the TV show “Extra.” The couple wed last June after a three-month engagement.

On her verified Twitter account, Ireland Baldwin welcomed her new sister into the world and linked to a blog post with 10 pieces of advice for the newborn. An agent for Alec Baldwin and a publicist have not returned requests for comment.

Negara (Bali Post)—Reconstruction of the sanctified

effigy (pratima) theft in a number of temples in Jembrana on Friday (Aug 23) was tightly guarded by police. Allegedly, the culprits committed the action in six temples such as in the Bujangga Sakti Temple, Subak Temple, Dalem Temple, Manggisari village (Pekutatan subdistrict), Rambutsiwi Temple (Mendoyo) and Indrakusuma Temple and Dalem Temple (Melaya). The reconstruc-tion made in marathon got a minor incident.

A number of residents in the Bujangga Sakti Temple having been waiting to watch the reconstruction were annoyed. The culprit, Abdul Rozak, 52, when getting out of the car, he was about to be hit by the

However, amidst the incessant criticism against the investor’s plan continuing with the new license, Governor Pastika seemed to take it easy. Met after opening the job fair at the Lila Buana Sport Stadium on Friday (Aug 23), Pastika firmly denied any effort to smooth the mea-sure of the investor to reclaim the Benoa Bay and denied an attempt used to fool Balinese people. “No, we did not smooth the measure of investor and deceive Balinese peo-ple,” said Pastika when asked about his comment on the allegations and criticism directed to him.

Many parties assessed that the is-suance of the new decree meant the reclamation plan had not been totally closed, but even entered a new phase. When asked about his comment on

Pastika denies to side with investors and fool Balinese peopleDenpasar (Bali Post)—

Negative accusations continue to emerge after the Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pas-tika, issued a new decree giving permission to PT TWBI to resume its study on the Benoa Bay reclamation plan. Even, Pastika was accused of lying and deceiving Balinese people. various components of Balinese people also suspected again the issuance of the new decree as a measure to smooth the measure of investor.

the case, Pastika lightly replied that his party only gave the investor per-mission for continuation of the study, not for the other purpose. Even, he seemed to satirize the parties criticiz-ing his policy. “Those expressing the criticism are the same people. I do not know what they mean,” satirized Pastika with a smile.

The policy providing permit for the study on the Benoa Bay reclamation plan that based on the Presidential De-cree No.122/2012 was prohibiting for reclamation, Pastika re-affirmed the permit was only limited to provision of permit to do a study. Even, he gave impression of challenging, inviting and allowing anyone to perform a study at Benoa Bay. “Anyone may perform the study. It’s only a study, why it is questioned. Similarly, you can also

make any study,” said the governor from Buleleng.

He also firmly denied if the new decree provided the opportunities for reclamation and smoothed the measure of the investor. He also said if he himself did not bow to the inten-tion of any investor. “No, we are not controlled by investor. We control ourselves,” added the former Chief of Bali Police.

As reported previously, Governor Pastika gave permit to PT TWBI to resume its study on the Benoa Bay reclamation plan through the Decree of Bali Governor No.1727/01-B/HK/2013 regarding the Permit of Feasibility Study for the Utilization, Development and Management Plan of Benoa Bay Waters dated August 16, 2013. The permit was granted

to continue the study of PT TWBI for 2 (two) years from the date of enactment. When the new decree came into effect, the Decree of Bali Governor No. 2138/02-C/HK/2012

on the conferment of permit and rights of utilization, development and management of the waters at Benoa Bay, Bali province, was declared no longer valid. (kmb29)

people having been waiting for him. The residents looked like in a half-conscious state and were about to hit the culprit. The effort of residents could be prevented by Pekutatan Police officers alerted at the loca-tion. Later on, the reconstruction could be performed. At least 25 scenes were undertaken in tree temples in Pekutatan. In the theft, the culprit committed the crimes with his friend with initials AHM but was still at large.

Subsequent reconstruction was continued to Rambutsiwi Temple at Yehembang Kangin village, Mendoyo. Here was revealed if the culprit committed the action with his friend, named AHM. Police prepared a stuntman played by Mendoyo Police officer. Chief of

the Criminal Detective Unit of Jem-brana Police, Aris Purwanto with IB Sudarsana also witnessed the reconstruction in the Rambutsiwi Temple.

Here were performed 17 scenes from the coming of the culprit to the action of stealing in the temple. The culprits parked the Honda Vario motorcycle at some distance from the temple. Then, they jumped over the eastern temple compound wall. Abdul Rozak came into the inner-most courtyard (utama mandala) and poked the door of the meru shrine with a crowbar and an elec-tric drill. In the shrine, the culprit admitted to have taken gold flower, perforated coins and two pieces of kris dagger. Being unsatisfied with the loot, they burglarized the other

shrines one by one. By Rozak, both kris daggers taken from the meru shrine were disposed into the cliff in the south of the temple. Meanwhile, the dagger sheathes were left behind the wall where they came into the temple. Then, the culprits brought along three gold flowers and perfo-rated coins.

Chief of the Criminal Detective Unit of the Jembrana Police, Aris Purwanto, with permission from the Chief of Jembrana Police, Komang Sandi Arsana, said the reconstruc-tion was the development of the culprit of the sanctified effigy theft arrested by Bali Police. The culprit admitted if they had stolen in six temples in Jembrana. However, the culprit did not know the name of the temples. On that account,

the culprit was taken to a number of locations to prove and make the reconstruction. He said from the investigation at the scene in the temple located in Pekutatan and Mendoyo, it was revealed the theft engaged two culprits. Meanwhile, in Candikusuma, Melaya, the theft involved four culprits and the four belonged to the syndicate of sancti-fied effigy theft.

Chief of the Rambutsiwi Temple supporting devotees, I Gusti Made Sedana, accompanied by Chief of Yehembang customary village, IB Legawa, who witnessed the reconstruction, was relieved with the arrest of the culprits stealing in the temple. They hoped the culprits could be sentenced in accordance with their deeds. (kmb26)

According to him, the geopark previously directed to become a spearhead for people’s welfare indeed retained its own dilemma. The geopark area that should be protected as a terrestrial park of the Mount Batur caldera on the other side was massively exploited such as by the sand mining (quarry C).

IBP/Edi

The huge Indonesian flag is carried by the particpants of Red and White Fun Walk which is held to celebrate the 65 Anniversarry of Bali Post on Sunday, August 25, 2013. Thousands of people take part in the event.

Geopark, exploitation amidst conservation

Bangli government was expected to be more focused on the geopark area management. By a year of the Mount Batur rocky area set by the UNESCO, the presence of the geopark had so far not considered to give significant contribution to the welfare of society. Besides, the government should also be more focused. If it really wanted to perform the conservation, the exploitation should be more disciplined. It was revealed by Deputy Chairman of the Bangli House, I Made Sudiasa.

For the communities around the quarry, it was one of the sources of their prosperity. “Since the very be-ginning, the geopark was directed to become a spearhead for the welfare of community but it then resulted in a dilemma. Originally, there has been indeed a quarry area at the geopark region having be-

come the source of prosperity for lower class community,” he said.

This politician from Undisan village added if the government would like to discipline the sand mining activity it should also be coupled with the provision of sub-stitute job opportunities for local people. Besides, in response to the

previous information mentioning if in the geopark region would also be equipped with tourism facilities such as golf courses, said Sudiasa, it obviously opposed to the con-servation efforts. Indirectly, estab-lishment of the golf course would exploit the protected areas.

In this case, Sudiasa judged the government seemed to have not focused. “If choosing the geopark, please go on. If it’s a part of the potential to be developed or ex-ploited, please review it first. If it is aimed at improving the people’s welfare, the government should

take a decision by taking one of two choices,” he said.

According to his observation, so far the presence of geopark could not have given a great contribution to surrounding community. Even, a few people still had not understood about the geopark itself. “So far, I think a lot of people remain not to understand about the geopark. To that end, I do hope the government could more aggressively socialize as well as invite the stakeholders to think about the next measures,” he said while adding if the idea of geopark seemed to be a forced idea.

An intricate Mughal garden is being created. Crumbling sandstone tombs nearly lost to history are being rebuilt. An artificial lake is being carved out. The renovation of Sunder Nursery is intended to serve as the catalyst for an even more ambitious project: the creation of a mammoth, iconic park that would rival New York’s Central Park as a refuge from urban chaos.

“It would be the place where the city descends. It would be an oasis,” said Ratish Nanda, project director for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, and the driv-ing force behind the dream of a mega-park.

To create that park would require the merger of a string of adjoining gardens, heritage areas and a zoo administered by different government agencies, an incredibly complicated task in a land where bureaucratic turfs are fiercely pro-tected. And though some officials are beginning to discuss the plan, no formal proposal has been formulated.

But sometimes in India, it takes tenacious dreamers like Nanda to achieve the seemingly impossible.

Nanda and the Aga Khan Trust have taken on seemingly impossible tasks before. They helped wrest a 17 acre compound in the area, along with a large monument, from India’s version of the Boy Scouts. They are currently fighting with railways officials to get them to remove a storeroom blocking access to another monument. “One single man has to be there, to strive, to go out and achieve this,” said Ashok Khurana, a powerful supporter and the recently retired head of Delhi’s Central Public Works Department, one of the many agencies that would need to work together to create the giant park.

The payoff would be considerable. Delhi, with a population of about 17 mil-lion, is a surprisingly green city, with small parks dotting many neighborhoods and Lodhi Gardens — with a clutch of crumbling monuments of its own — attracting speed walkers and picnickers in upscale south Delhi. The mega-park would tower over them all. It would be 480 hectares (1,200 acres).

BEIJING — China says the number of Japanese tourists visiting Bei-jing fell by more than half in the first six months of the year amid a spike in tensions between the countries.

Beijing’s statistics bureau said Sunday that 136,000 Japanese tourists visited the capital between January and July. That was down 53.7 percent from the same period last year.

The drop follows violent anti-Japanese protests in Beijing and several other Chinese cities in September in response to complaints from the government over Japan’s move to nationalize uninhabited East China Sea islands claimed by China. Japanese businesses were torched and Japanese-brand cars were smashed despite their having been locally made.

There were also scattered reports of assaults on Japanese citizens, although none of the attacks were serious.

US zoo hopes to get closer look at day-old panda

at a day-old panda cub during an exam planned for Saturday. During the checkup, officials will try to listen to the cub’s heart and lungs, record its weight and collect a DNA

sample. The minutes-long health as-sessment is planned for Saturday, but mom Mei Xiang has to give keepers an opportunity to take her cub, which was born Friday evening and is about the size of a stick of butter.

Brandie Smith, the zoo’s curator of mammals, says she and others are “cautiously optimistic” about this cub’s health. And she compared Saturday’s planned exam to a race car pit stop, a fast and highly cho-reographed checkup before reuniting mom and cub.

The cub is the 15-year-old pan-da’s third. The cub she gave birth to last year died after just six days. That cub’s lungs hadn’t fully developed and likely weren’t sending enough oxygen to its liver. Mei Xiang’s first cub, a male named Tai Shan, was born in 2005.

An early exam at the zoo is a change from last year, and staff members have made several other changes in preparation for another cub. Mei Xiang’s den has been al-tered to allow keepers to get closer to her, and the zoo also invited

a panda expert from China who specializes in newborns to help out. Two of the zoo’s panda keep-ers have also recently spent time in China learning more about examin-ing newborns.

Officials made a first, unsuccess-ful attempt at examining the cub Saturday morning and planned to try again later in the day.

Information collected during the

Gianyar (Bali Post)—

I Ketut Raja, 60, a woodcarving businessman from Kengetan ham-let, Singakerta village, Ubud, was found dead with foaming mouth in the rice field area of Subak Abian Tiying, Singakerta. Allegedly, Ketut Raja committed suicide after burn-ing his home and business premises, Friday morning (Aug 23).

It was unknown for sure the reasons of the culprit to burn his home and business premises he established. However, based on information from local residents, he previously had an argument with his wife and son on Thursday night (Aug 22) around 19:00 p.m. After that, on Friday morning at 1:20 a.m. both houses and garage with a car were found to have burned down. In addition, his business premise receiving the woodcarving orders and a shop rented to an Indian who produced candles were also burned down and so was the motorcycle.

Due to the incident, local resi-dents beat wooden split drum con-tinuously, marking the fire incident in customary bylaw. Trucks of Gi-anyar Fire Brigade were deployed to extinguish the fire at his home. However, amidst the blackouts con-ducted, the residents and officials were surprised by the fire occurred at his business premise. The fire at

two different locations made the Fire Brigade overwhelmed. There-fore, the help was brought in from the Badung Fire Brigade.

The Division Head of Emergency, the Gianyar Regional Disaster Mitiga-tion Agency (BPBD), Wayan Gde Eka Putra, said the fire was extinguished around 06:00 a.m. after 6 units of trucks of the Gianyar Fire Brigade extinguished the fire at his home and 15 truck tanks of the Gianyar and Badung Fire Brigade extinguished the fire at the business premises.

After the fire was extinguished, the residents of Singakerta spread to search for the culprit. Ultimately, the culprit was found lying dead in the rice field belonging to Wayan Taram by Ketut Sukanada. Then, the finding was informed to Suana and other residents.

With permission from the Chief of Gianyar Police, the Chief of Ubud Police, Anak Agung Gde Oka, revealed that based on the results of external autopsy, his death was alleged to have been caused by suicide by drinking poison. How-ever, the case was still be explored by the investigators. Regarding to the problem, this officer from Tampaksiring said it was triggered by a family problem.

The former deputy chief of Sin-gakerta customary village previously had a quarrel with his wife, Ni Made

Kasi. Amidst the quarrel, his son Wayan Sudiana came and defended his mother, so that it resulted in a tense ambience between the culprit and his son. “Maybe he got depres-sion so that he was desperate to take action by burning the house and business premises,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the hamlet chief of

Kengetan, Made Sulastra, over the finding of the corpse of his resident planned to bring it to Sanjiwani Hospital to temporarily board out until there was a good time for funeral procession. According to him, the culprit (Ketut Raja) was a successful woodcarving business-man. In the 1980s, the culprit had

owned an asset up to IDR 1 billion. Due to the impact of Bali bombing, his business then declined. In terms of his latest economic develop-ment, it had been actually getting better. Meanwhile, the incident was alleged to have been triggered by an internal problem, he said. (kmb16)

Courtroom revelations in the po-litically charged trial have already exposed the unraveling of one of China’s elite families, with Bo calling his wife “crazy” after she testified against him and saying she took their son abroad in fury after he had been unfaithful.

Bo told the Jinan Intermediate People’s Court Sunday that his former right-hand man “was a person of very vile quality who first, lied in court, and secondly, muddied the waters.”

At the close of Sunday morning’s hearing, the court said all evidence had been presented and that the trial was adjourned till Monday.

The ruling Communist Party is us-

ing the trial against Bo to cap a major political scandal unleashed last year when his aide fled to a U.S. consulate bearing revelations that Bo’s wife had killed a British businessman.

That scandal led to Bo’s ouster as Politburo member and party leader of the southern megacity of Chongqing, making him the most senior leader to fall from power in years. His purge is being cemented by criminal charges of abusing his power by interfering in the murder investigation and trying to hide the defection, as well as netting $4.3 million through corruption.

High-profile trials of senior leaders are regarded as the result

of backroom negotiations, with the outcome decided by politicians and carried out by courts. Still, Bo has mounted an unexpectedly spirited defense, recanting earlier confes-sions, disputing evidence against him and calling his wife, who testi-fied against him, “crazy.”

Court proceedings Saturday centered on events around the time when Bo’s former top aide, Chongq-ing police chief Wang Lijun, drove to the American consulate in the nearby city of Chengdu in February 2012, fearing for his safety after he told Bo about the murder.

Bo told the court that he reacted angrily to Wang’s report, slapping the police chief in the face and smashing a cup in fury because he thought Wang was framing his wife for the crime. “I thought he was being duplicitous. I have zero tolerance for duplicity,” Bo said. “I slapped him in the face.”

Associated Press Writer ALBANY, N.Y. — New York’s

attorney general sued Donald Trump for $40 million Saturday, saying the real estate mogul helped run a phony “Trump University” that promised to make students rich but instead steered them into expensive and mostly useless seminars, and even failed to deliver promised apprenticeships.

Attorney General Eric Schnei-derman says many of the 5,000 students who paid up to $35,000 thought they would at least meet Trump but instead all they got was their picture taken in front of a life-size picture of “The Ap-prentice” TV star.

“Trump University engaged in deception at every stage of consumers’ advancement through costly programs and caused real financial harm,” Schneiderman said. “Trump University, with Donald Trump’s knowledge and participation, relied on Trump’s name recognition and celebrity sta-tus to take advantage of consumers who believed in the Trump brand.” A spokeswoman for Trump did not immediately return a request for comment Saturday.

The lawsuit says many of the wannabe moguls were unable to

land even one real estate deal and were left far worse off than before the lessons, facing thousands of dollars in debt for the seminar program once billed as a top quality university with Trump’s “hand-picked” instructors.

Schneiderman is suing the pro-gram, Trump as the university chairman, and the former president of the university in a case to be handled in state Supreme Court in Manhattan. He accuses them of engaging in persistent fraud, illegal and deceptive conduct and violating federal consumer protection law. The $40 million he seeks is mostly to pay restitution to consumers.

A Trump attorney had said Schneiderman sought campaign contributions while investigat-ing the case, telling The New York Times it was “tantamount to extortion,” a claim denied by Schneiderman.

“Unlike some who are willing to turn a blind eye to fraud in exchange for campaign contri-butions, the attorney general is willing to follow an investigation wherever it may lead, even if that means investigating people with whom he’s had a relation-ship, Schneiderman spokesman Andrew Friedman told The As-sociated Press.

NEW DELHI — Police on Sunday arrested the last of five men wanted in the gang rape of a photojournalist in Mumbai, and said charges would be filed soon in a case that has incensed the public and fueled debate over whether women can be safe in India.

The victim, a 22-year-old In-dian woman, said she was anxious to return to work after Thursday night’s assault, in which five men repeatedly raped her while her male colleague was beaten and tied up in an abandoned textile mill in the country’s financial capital.

“Rape is not the end of life,” the woman told the Times of India. A

statement from Jaslok Hospital, where she has been since the attack, said her condition was being moni-tored but that she was “much better” and was being visited by family. Indian law forbids identifying rape victims by name.

Police arrested the fifth suspect Sunday in New Delhi, the capital, after rounding up the other four in

Mumbai.“We will file a comprehensive

charge sheet soon,” said Mumbai’s police commissioner, Satyapal Singh, assuring that police had the evidence to prosecute the suspects, including the victim’s testimony and medical samples taken at the hospital after the assault.

It is rare for rape victims to visit

police or a hospital immediately after an attack in India, where an entrenched culture of tolerance for sexual violence has led to many cases going unreported. Women are often pressed by social pressure or police to stay quiet about sexual as-sault, experts say, and those who do report cases are often subjected to public ridicule or social stigma.

The ineffective service of the Reading Outlet in Sanglah Hospital for at least a year is caused by the absence of the duty officer. Earlier, the duty officer came every day. But later, the Reading Outlet is not opened any longer because the duty officer has resigned.

Spokesperson of Sanglah Hospital, Kadek Nariyantha, when met on Friday (Aug 23) in Sanglah Hospital delivered that in this case the hospital only served as provider of the space. “The Reading Outlet

poses collaboration with Per-tamina, while Sanglah Hospital simply provides the space,” he said.

According to Nariyantha, the duty officer should be provided by Pertamina. All this time, Sanglah Hospital sometimes deployed the of-ficer starting from the security guard to cleaning service staff to clean up the Reading Outlet or if possible to be in charge of the location.

Further, he explained that Sanglah Hospital had not yet

decided whether to provide the duty officer. “I do not know for sure because I have not read the agreement clearly whether the duty officer must be prepared by Pertamina or Sanglah Hos-pital. To my knowledge, it’s Pertamina that provides the officer,” said Nariyantha.

Currently, he said that San-glah Hospital was focused on the provision of service for patients in Sanglah Hospital so that staff recruitment for the Reading Outlet had not become a priority. (san)

Hindu community in Bali has a unique performing art known as Calonarang. The performing art poses a dance-drama whose artists should master the elements of dance, music and vocal. A troupe is supported by tens of artists. Interestingly, almost all the dancers consist of ‘selected’ artists. In other

words, they have superior talent, so that ev-ery performance can draw the attention of spectators.

Frequently, it is also graced by the contest of shakti power between the dancers and peo-ple having magical powers. It is commonly carried out in the ‘invitation’ scene, where

the dancers invite people to get involved in a magical power contest. It is usually done by the player dancing the Rangda effigy. In this scene, it is filled with matebekan (stabbing kris dagger in the chest) performed by the other players against the Rangda.

In this session, the performing area will usually turn magical, horrific and creepy. If the dancers have come into trance, the stabbers will stab themselves with the kris dagger. The more horrific atmosphere happens when living players are given a mantra and then act as a dead person (corpse). Afterward, the body is consecrated (as in cremation). Then, they are taken to cemetery. Mystical atmosphere is strongly felt in the show at this scene.

Calonarang is indeed a special performing art that cannot be staged arbitrarily. How-ever, after the development of tourism, the Calonarang is also staged for tourist entertain-ment. However, time and type of ceremony is not made specifically. AA Gde Raka, a religious philosopher, said the Calonarang dance-drama was actually a ritual event where the sanctified effigies in the form of Rangda and Barong venerated were taken down and danced. The Calonarang itself was performed on the piodalan (temple anniversary) in the Dalem Temple and other temples. Players getting involved in the Calonarang attraction were those specifically having high spiritual knowledge and the arts.

According to him, the story of Calonarang was inseparable from the concept of rwa bhineda or basic dualism such as the quality

of good and bad being always side by side. The Calonarang story was taken from a fairy tale on a widow named Walu Nateng Girah from Girah village, Kediri. Walu meant wid-ow, Nateng (Queen) and Girah was the name of a village in Kediri, East Java. Therefore, Walu Nateng Girah meant a widow queen from Girah village. Walu Nateng Girah is a disciple of left school representing the adharma. Meanwhile, the King Airlangga is the follower of goodness representing the dharma. “It has significance that in this life good and bad qualities are inseparable,” he said.

In that struggle, none of Mpu Bharadah and Nateng Girah won symbolizing that good and bad was inseparable. The staging of Calonarang performance was not entertain-ment art, but due to influence of globalization, many Calonarang performances then led to profane art, too.

According to Gde Raka, the word Calonar-ang was derived from the word arang meaning the ash related to plague caused by Nateng Girah where the Girah village was like to have been transformed into ashes because many people were sick and died.

Calonarang performance was usually com-menced with the presence of barong dance, telek dance and followed by the emergence of young ladies. The next scene told about Walu Nateng Girah and her followers practicing black magic getting involved in a struggle against the forces of King Airlangga belong-ing to white school. (BTn)

However, from the number mentioned 10 of them did not meet the security qualification. Five of them located in BTDC area.

“From 13 hotels which located in Nusa Dua and surrounding areas, five of them are still not eligible,” he said.

He revealed that the security verification requirements do not only about the property and human security, but also a thorough security in-cluding the transactions security, information and data security, name and image security, as well as security in a number of relevant departments including the food department. Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika calls all the hotels management in Bali, especially in Nusa Dua, Badung District to monitor the security towards the APEC Summit.

“We are concern to the security and please do not underestimate it or take some risks. If the security is not good enough, it is possible the whole preparations for the APEC will be in vain,” Pastika said.

He also asked the police department to provide guidance about the security to the hotels management, especially which located in Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) area in Nusa Dua, as the main location of APEC Summit.

astika also urged to all parties to provide good services during the big event which to be attended by 21 heads of state and governments along with thousands of delegates and journalists from around the world.

SAN FRANCISCO - Mi-crosoft chief executive Steve Ballmer announced Friday he would retire within 12 months, opening a new chap-ter for the industry pioneer struggling to keep pace with a fast-changing tech sector.

“There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time,” Ballmer said in a statement, which surprised financial markets and sparked a rally in Microsoft shares.

“My original thoughts on timing would have had my re-tirement happen in the middle of our company’s transforma-tion to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction.”

Ballmer took over as CEO in 2000 from co-founder Bill Gates, a classmate and friend from their days at Harvard University in the 1970s.

When Ballmer took over, Microsoft was the undisputed tech sector leader, and the world’s largest company in market value.

But in recent years, Micro-soft has struggled as consum-ers began to transition from desktop and laptop PCs to mobile devices.

While its Windows soft-ware is used on the vast majority of personal computers, Microsoft has had little impact in

the fast-growing segments of t a b -

lets and smartphones.“Microsoft has clearly been

on the wrong track for a long time,” said Roger Kay, analyst at Endpoint Technologies As-sociates.

“Essentially Microsoft missed the shift to high mo-bility entirely.”

Kay said Microsoft “has suffered from the inability to look honestly at itself. They say they’re going to be the king of search, but they’re not. They need to look at the businesses not working and turn them off.”

Microsoft shares leapt as much as nine percent in pre-market trade and were up 6.9 percent to $34.61 at 1717 GMT. The shares, which hit topped $58 in 1999 adjusted for stock splits during the dot-com boom, have been little changed in the past decade.

Ballmer, 57, will continue in the interim as CEO “and will lead Microsoft through the next steps of its transformation to a devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value most,” said a statement from the Redmond, Washington, company.

The board of directors has appointed a special committee to direct the process chaired by independent director John Thompson and including

Gates, Chuck Noski and Steve Luczo.

Microsoft said it is working with Heidrick & Strug-gles International Inc., an executive recruiting firm, and will consider both external and inter-

nal candidates.

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said stimulative policies are still needed in key regions, especially Europe and Japan, which have strug-gled with prolonged weakness.

She spoke at an annual econom-ics conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, sponsored by the Kansas

City Federal Reserve Bank.

Lagarde said central banks must carefully de-

velop strategies for scaling back their efforts to keep borrowing

rates low. Any pullback should be de-termined by the strength of individual economies, she said.

Her comments come as the Fed is signaling that it could slow its bond purchases later this year if the U.S. economy continues to improve. The Fed’s bond buying has helped keep

U.S. interest rates near record lows.“Unconventional monetary policy

is still needed in all places it is being used, albeit longer for some than for others,” Lagarde said in her speech to the conference.

The anticipation of a slowdown in Fed bond buying has unsettled U.S. stock and bond markets and sent inter-est rates up. Rising U.S. rates have, in turn, triggered turmoil in some emerging economies, such as Turkey, India and Indonesia. Officials in those countries have tried to halt declines in the value of their currencies as inves-tors have shifted money into higher-yielding investments elsewhere.

Lagarde noted the market declines that have followed Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s signal in June that the Fed could begin slowing its bond purchases later this year if the U.S.

economy strengthens further. She said finance officials should

prepare contingency plans in case market turbulence worsens.

Some investors think the Fed could announce at its next meeting in Septem-ber that it’s reducing its bond purchases. But comments from Fed officials at Jackson Hole suggested some disagree-ment within the central bank over the proper timing for a slowdown to begin.

Dennis Lockhart, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, suggested in an interview with CNBC that he might be ready to endorse a bond-buying slowdown in September. But James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Fed, said he thought the economy remains too uncertain for a pullback next month.

In a separate interview, Bullard said the decision on whether to start tapering could well come into focus just a few days before the Sept. 17-18 meeting if Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke decides at that time to provide the other policymakers with a recommendation.

AntaraJAKARTA - An expert has

said the Upstream Oil and Gas regulatory special task force (SKK Migas) should revamp its process of recruiting employees and perform spiritual training for its employees.

“There is something wrong in the recruitment process in some state companies, including SKK Migas. I am just wondering how Rudi Rubiandini, who is known as a nice people, could be involved in such a graft case,” Yohanis Embon, an expert at Global De-velopment Consultant, said.

Embon further said addressing spiritual issues could assist in the training of employees.

“Spirituality’s value could af-fect a person’s behavior,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dewi Aryani, the House’s VII Commission member, said SKK Migas is not different than older advisory bodies such the upstream oil and gas regula-tory body (BP Migas), noting that criminal practices in the oil and gas industry have been prevalent for a long time.

He urged the Corruption Eradi-cation Commission (KPK) to be bold and expose criminal practices in both bureaucratic processes and oil and gas businesses.

“KPK should uncover al l wrongdoings in the country’s oil and gas industry,” he said.

On Friday, Aug 23, it was re-

ported that SKK Migas was prepar-ing to replace some deputies and top officials.

It was additionally reported that the supervisory Commission for SKK Migas has reviewed propos-als for replacement of officials.

“We have received some pro-posals, but we are still review-ing them,” commission member Susilo Siswoutomo said.

Among officials who reportedly would be replaced are Deputy of Operations Control Muliawan, Deputy of Financial Control Akhmad Syakhroza, Deputy of Commercial Control Widhyawan Prawiraatmadja, and Deputy of Control and Business Support Gerhard M Rumeser.

Indonesia, along with countries such as India, Malaysia and Thai-land, has been buffeted by an exodus of cash from its financial markets as improving economic prospects in the U.S and Europe reverse the tide of money that swept into developing nations the past few years.

Among the measures announced Friday, Coordinating Minister for the Economy Hatta Rajasa said the government will relax mineral export quotas and streamline the investment permit process.

He said the government will in-crease the import tax on luxury cars and some branded products, provide tax incentives for investment in agriculture and metal industries and seek to reduce oil imports.

The moves aim to shore up Indonesia’s currency and bolster confidence that the country can pay its bills by limiting outflows of money and encouraging inflows. That in theory should reduce Indo-nesia’s current account deficit, which largely reflects that it is importing more than it exports.

“With these steps, the current ac-count deficit in the third and fourth

quarters is expected to decrease while economic growth could be maintained,” Rajasa said.

The country’s currency, the rupiah, has sunk to its lowest level in over four years. At its lowest point Friday, it traded at 11,020 per U.S. dollar. The Jakarta Composite Index was flat Friday, after sliding 8.7 percent in the first four days of the week.

Bank Mandiri market analyst Reny Eka Putri said the Indonesian central bank is also expected to in-tervene to prevent the rupiah from losing more value.

“The volatility of the financial market is quite high and the national currency has tended to weaken,” Putri said. “But Bank Indonesia will protect the currency.”

In another move Friday, Indo-nesia’s financial services authority, the OJK, eased regulations on share buybacks to help support the local stock market as investors are pull-ing their funds away from emerging markets on concern that the U.S. Federal Reserve may soon scale back its bond purchases.

Companies will be allowed to buy back stocks when the Jakarta

Composite Index, Indonesia’s main benchmark, sheds at least 15 percent over three sessions.

“In such conditions, compa-nies can buy back shares without shareholders’ approval for up to 20 percent of their stake,” the OJK said in a statement.

Muliaman Hadad, chairman of the OJK, said the move was aimed at lowering market volatility.

In 2011, Indonesia’s economy grew 6.5 percent, which was its fast-est growth since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. But growth slowed to 5.8 percent in the second quarter of this year.

The country has also experienced rising inflation, which hit 8.6 percent in July, after the government cut fuel subsidies. The unpopular move hiked pump prices by up to 44 percent.

Meanwhile, economic pains are also being felt elsewhere in Asia.

India’s rupee has plummeted to new lows against the dollar on a near daily basis, showing the pressure of a current account deficit that has swelled from high import costs. The Sensex stock index has fallen nearly 10 percent in the past month.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s top Islamic authority lashed out Friday at the country’s decision to host the Miss World beauty pageant next month, saying that women exposing their bodies went against Muslim teaching.

The pageant is already facing opposition in Muslim-majority Indonesia, with radicals vowing to stage protests against the contest even after organisers agreed to drop the bikini round in a bid to avoid causing offence.

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) added its voice to the pro-tests Friday, saying a top-level meeting of clerics earlier this month decided it did not want the pageant in the country.

“Exposing women’s bodies in public is ‘haram’, forbidden by Is-lamic teaching,” senior MUI official Muhyiddin Junaidi told reporters in the capital Jakarta.

“Even though the bikini event is being axed, the contestants will still wear tight dresses and expose parts of their body.”

The group also urged the country’s Muslims, more than 90 percent of the 240 million population, not to watch the pageant on television.

“The contest tries to trick people by saying that it’s not only a physical beauty contest but also to show inner beauty,” said deputy MUI head, Amirsyah Tambunan.

Junaidi said that the MUI had now made its position clear, and it was up to authorities whether they decided to cancel the pageant.

While most Indonesians practise a moderate form of Islam, a vocal hardline fringe has succeeded in getting events cancelled in the past.

Last year, pop sensation Lady Gaga axed a concert after hardlin-ers threatened to burn down the venue and criticised her for wearing only “a bra and panties”.

More than 130 women will compete in Miss World, with some rounds on the resort island of Bali and the final in Bogor outside Ja-karta. Bogor is in West Java province, parts of which are considered a stronghold for radicals.

Organisers revealed in June that the contestants would not wear bikinis during the beach fashion section, to be held in Bali, and would instead wear more conservative attire such as traditional sarongs.

sociate editor of the encyclopedia, said a primary inspiration for the work is one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, who is coming to the University of South Carolina conference that will celebrate the work’s launch.

Swami Chidanand founded the India Heritage Research Foundation, which became the parent organiza-tion behind the encyclopedia effort. He is president of the Parmarth Niketan Ashram spiritual retreat in Rishikesh, India, and travels to visit with Hindu followers in the United States several times a year.

The encyclopedia’s volumes run from 600 to more than 700 pages. Some 3,000 copies are being issued in the first printing and will be of interest to libraries, religious institutions, and those studying Indian culture around the world, French said.

Hinduism is the world’s third-larg-est religion, with 1 billion followers, according to a Pew Research Center study published this year. Christians number 2.2 billion and Muslims 1.6 billion, the study showed.

Hinduism’s basic teaching is that the soul never dies, but is reborn each time

the body dies. The soul may be reborn in human or animal form. The cycle of death and rebirth continues until a soul reaches spiritual perfection, and is united in total enlightenment and peace with the supreme being.

Many Hindus who settled around the world have found that they need a comprehensive source of informa-tion on the religion for their children, said Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati, managing editor of the encyclopedia and a secretary of the India Heritage Research Foundation.

Children came home from schools where a teacher may have discussed whether Hinduism is a belief in one god, or many gods, and need the proper background to explain it, Sadhvi Bhagawati said in a telephone interview.

“They wanted a source to go to so they could pass the correct informa-tion to their children,” she said.

She explained that the encyclope-dia project took more than 20 years because “it began in pre-computer days.” “If we started today, it might just have taken a few years,” said Sad-hvi Bhagawati, who describes herself a disciple of Swami Chidanand.

LONDON - Four people have died after a helicopter carrying 18 from an offshore oil platform crashed into the North Sea off Scot-land, police said Saturday.

The Eurocopter Super Puma heli-copter ditched into the sea about two miles (3 kilometers) from Sumburgh airport in Shetland on Friday night. It was carrying 16 passengers and two crew members.

The aircraft’s operator CHC, a company that serves offshore oil and gas platforms, said the aircraft was approaching the airport when it lost contact with air traffic control.

The coastguard agency said it sent helicopters and lifeboats to the scene after receiving a distress signal.

“There appears to have been a catastrophic loss of power which meant the helicopter suddenly dropped into the sea without any opportunity to make a controlled landing,” said Jim Nicholson, a rescue coordinator.

CHC would not speculate on what caused the crash, saying it would cooperate fully with an inves-tigation by police and the British Air Accidents Investigation Branch.

Police in Scotland said three bod-ies had been recovered, and they were searching for the fourth victim.

A 24-year-old man was snatched by a crocodile in front of at least 15 onlookers as he swam across a northern Australian river with a friend, police said Sunday. Northern Territory police said the man was with a group celebrat-ing a birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 ki-lometres (70 miles) from Darwin, on Saturday when he decided to plunge into the water.

“They were watching him swim across,” senior sergeant Geoff Bahnert told AFP of the

group. “And they just saw a croco-dile with him in its jaws.”

Police conducted a search for the man, but were unsuccessful. The search was continuing Sunday, Bahnert said, adding that the largest crocodile at the site had been shot and killed as a precaution.

Reports suggested the men had ignored warnings not to swim in the river because of the risk of a crocodile attack.

“We tell people to stay away from the water, they obviously went against this (and) a man was taken,” an employee of the resort, Erin Bayard, told News Corp Australia.

BEIRUT - Syria’s Western-backed political opposition plans to create the nucleus of a national army to bring order to the disparate rebel forces battling President Bashar al-Assad and counter the strength of al Qaeda-linked rebel brigades.

The latest attempt to unite the rebels coincides with fierce debates in Washington and other Western capi-tals over whether and how to boost support for Assad’s opponents after an alleged chemical weapons attack by government forces on Wednesday. Chaos among opposition forces and al-Qaeda’s growing role are barriers to any intervention.

Plans for an army are still under wraps but details began emerging ear-lier this month before the gas attack. It has the blessing of the rebels’ patron Saudi Arabia, which took over as the main regional backer of Assad’s foes earlier this year.

“It is very serious. It will be a proper army. The future of Syria

depends on this move,” said a senior member of Syria’s opposition Na-tional Coalition, which hopes to set up the force.

Momentum behind the new force comes from Saudi Arabia and West-ern nations who, alarmed by the growth of radical Islamists in rebel-held areas, have thrown their weight behind the Syrian Coalition, hoping it could help stem their power.

“Once we get the (battle)field organised, then everything will be organised,” he said. “This will be the army of the new Syria. We want to integrate its ranks and unify the sources of funding and arms,” the Syrian National Coali-tion member said.

Saudi Arabia has prevailed over Qatar to impose itself as the main outside force supporting the Syrian rebels, in part to counter the influence of Qatari-backed Islamist militants.

Riyadh has put forward $100 million as preliminary funding for a force planned to be 6,000 to 10,000 strong, rebels say.

“I played very beautiful tennis today,” Halep said. “I was enjoy-ing every moment.” Kvitova had a chance to take charge early in match, up 2-1 and 15-40 on Halep’s serve. But Halep won the next three points to save that game. She was down 40-30 in the next game before getting her first service break when Kvitova sent a cross-court forehand just wide.

“She played just really good shots in that moment,” Kvitova said. “That was turning the match around, I think.” The Czech star never recovered.

Halep didn’t give her a chance, committing just four unforced er-rors in the first set and one in the second set. She put in 74 percent of her first serves and won 78 percent of them. She converted four of her five break points. The ninth-ranked Kvitova was 0-for-4 on her break chances. She had 25 unforced er-rors and won just 32 of the match’s 90 points.

Halep closed the match by hold-ing Kvitova without a point in the final game, serving an ace, dropping her racket and throwing her arms

into the air. “Everything is perfect here,” she said.

Halep earned her fourth career win, but her first in a premiere tournament. All have come since June. The 23rd-ranked player improved to 29-5 in her last 34 matches (31-5 counting quali-fying matches). Two of her previous wins had come on clay and the other on grass, but she said she actually plays better on the hard courts.

The victory will move her to No. 19 when the rankings are released on Monday. Her run through New Haven also included victories over Daniela Hantuchova, Carla Suarez Navarro, Ekaterina Makarova and four-time New Haven champion Caroline Wozniacki.

Halep has played in the U.S. Open three times, making it to the second round twice. She hopes to do better this time.

“I think I will play good there also,” she said. “I just want to be relaxed because it’s good feeling now, good moment for me. I want just to live this great moment.” She took home $117,000 along with the trophy. Kvitova, who earned $62,300, was trying to win the same

tournament in consecutive years for the first time in her career.

“It was first time for me to defend a title and be in the final,” she said. “That’s a good sign actually for me. I will try to take the positive things from this tournament because it was great matches for me.”

The tournament, which began as a men’s event in 1990, faces an uncertain future. Its five biggest sponsors are in the final year of their three-year deals. Attendance has been steadily declining. Just 45,796 fans attended this week, down from 76,480 in 2010, the last

year the ATP players were also here, and 53,004 a year ago.

But Anne Worcester, the tourna-ment’s director, said ticket revenue actually increased over last year, and she is optimistic sponsorship deals will be finalized to keep the event in New Haven.

When having an excursion at Kendran Village, you can see all the uniqueness owned by Bali Island. Exotic nature, sustainable culture as well as historical legacy indicate if the human civilization in the area has been so advanced. By all means, it is reasonable if the vil-lage is visited by many foreign tourists, especially those who love cultural tourism, spiritual, history and ecotourism.

Kendran Village is situated in Tegallalang Subdistrict, Gianyar Regency. It is very close to Ubud, or about 60 minutes’ drive from Ngurah Rai Airport. Aside from having cool air, the local culture and tradition with historical value are also favored by tourists. “Tourists feel peaceful when staying at Kendran Village having the nuance of beautiful Balinese house and exuding unique atmosphere to tourists,” said Nyoman Buda, one of the planners of the Kendran Tourism Village.

Ecotourism program is the most popular product offered to tourists. By exploring the rural roads, tourists can learn and enjoy the Balinese cultural attractions developed with the concept of community-based tourism. Terraced rice fields have been becoming the playground for a flock of white heron flying to and fro. Accom-panied by farmers who work to cultivate their land and the sound of water flow will give an ambience that could release tension.

Indeed, it is very absorbing when walking on the dikes of the rice field overlay spreading across 650 hectares. Moreover, after arriv-ing at Telagawaja, our mind seems to have united with nature. The aura is different and it poses a perfect place for spiritual indulgence. Telagawaja nature offers freshness through its shower and bathing place. To get there, visitors have to go down some stairs. The water flows endlessly, tastes cold and refreshes the body.

No less interestingly, here visitors can find sarcophagus and kettle drum maker which has a high spiritual value located in the valley with a natural panorama. Splashing water emanating from the springs really increases the spiritual aura of the village. “Here is the favorite location for tourists to perform spiritual activities,” he said.

Balinese culture that has been known worldwide is still main-tained by the community. Even, visitors can get involved in the activities of sculpturing or carving. In addition, tourists can also learn to practice Balinese Dance, starting from the basic movement up to the whole dance movement. “In other words, this program offers an ecotourism while learning the arts of Bali,” said this energetic man.

Dani Sordo claimed his first World Rally Championship victory after an epic battle with Thierry Neuville in Germany. The duo started the final day just 0.8 seconds apart as they hunted for their first top-level triumphs.

Sordo pulled out a little breathing space as he beat Neuville by 2.2s on the first run through the Dhrontal stage on which all Sunday’s ac-tion took place.

Neuville gave his utmost to try to recover that

advantage on the repeat run, but looked set to fall slightly short even before an excursion in the final few kilometres cost him nearly a minute.

The battle was the closest that M-Sport has come to a rally win since losing its Ford factory support at the end of last year, and marked the first time that anyone other than Sebastien Loeb had won in a Citroen this season.

Sordo had achieved 34 WRC podiums so far in his career without winning, and knew that his

future depended on his Germany performance, with Citroen dropping him for the next event in Australia to give Kris Meeke another shot. Sordo and Neuville rose to the front after both Volkswagens had accidents while leading.

Championship leader Sebastien Ogier looked set to pull away following fastest times on Thursday evening’s stages, only to crash out on Friday morning. That left his team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala holding a shrinking advantage over Neuville.

Just as Neuville seemed poised to grab the lead, Latvala retaliated and started to pull away, only to damage his car on Panzerplatte. He es-caped that incident still leading, then struggled with a co-driver’s door flapping open before going off on Saturday afternoon.

Neuville had an impact of his own on the same stage, damaging his Ford’s exhaust and allowing Sordo - who had been getting ever closer to him anyway - to claim the rally lead going into the final day.

The attrition rate was very high. Even before Ogier and Latvala’s incidents, VW was one car down because Andreas Mikkelsen’s co-driver Mikko Markkula was diagnosed with a back injury pre-rally.

All three of Neuville’s M-Sport team-mates Mads Ostberg, Evgeny Novikov and Nasser Al-Attiyah crashed and had to return under Rally2. That meant Martin Prokop emerged with a distant but equal-career-best fourth place.

DONETSK, Ukraine - Stanyslav Kashtanov of Ukraine knocked out Jaime Barboza of Costa Rica in the 10th round Saturday to retain his in-terim WBA super middleweight belt in front of a hometown crowd.

Barboza fell to the canvas following a stunning right hook and had to remove his mouth guard to spit blood as the referee reached the 10 count 2 minutes, 40 seconds into the 10th. Kashtanov improved to 31-1 with 17 knockouts. Barboza fell to 18-8 with 8 KOs.

Kashtanov took the title in No-vember last year by beating Server Yemurlayev of Ukraine by unanimous decision, and this was his first title defense.

The 29-year-old Ukrainian first knocked the 35-year-old Barboza to the canvas with a series of body blows near the end of the seventh round.

It was more to form, meanwhile, as Juventus kicked off its bid for a third consecutive title with Carlos Tevez scoring in the 58th minute of a 1-0 win at Sampdoria, which beat the Bianconeri in both league meetings last season.

Juve didn’t quite dominate like in its 4-0 rout of Lazio in last weekend’s Super Cup but Antonio Conte’s men showed the same poise and discipline of the past two seasons.

Tevez, Juve’s big offseason acquisition from Manchester City, only had to tap in after tak-ing a pass from Paul Pogba at the edge of the box on a rainy night at the Juventus Stadium.

At the other end, Juve’s corp of quality defenders — Andrea Barza-gli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini — cleared any danger.

It was a different story in Verona,

where Andrea Poli put Milan ahead in the 14th minute following a pass from Mario Balotelli before the 1.96-meter (6-foot-5) Toni struck back with headers in the 30th and 53rd. “There’s no better way to start the season,” Verona midfielder Massimo Donati said.

It was a disturbing result for Mi-lan ahead of Wednesday’s return-leg match with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League playoffs. Milan also gave up a lead in the opening leg, drawing 1-1.

Last season, Milan never lost in Serie A after establishing a lead, winning 21 matches and drawing four.

“The explanation is simple: we played bad football and we played poorly as a squad,” Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “We needed to control the ball better. We played poorly and they

deserved the victory.“We need to play with more

nastiness and more attentively,” Allegri added. “After we scored we stopped playing. Even though he’s 36, Toni fought like a lion.”

The other eight matches of the opening weekend will be played Sunday, with last year’s runner-up Napoli hosting Bologna and Inter Milan facing Genoa at the San Siro. Also, Lazio opens against Udinese with one end of its sta-dium closed as punishment for fan racism in the Super Cup.

There were concerns that Verona fans might direct racist chants at Ba-lotelli but, with the issue discussed widely before the match, support-ers responded by applauding him instead whenever he touched the ball — albeit likely in an ironic manner. “The fans offered a great response,” Donati said.

MADRID - Carlos Vela helped Real Sociedad overcome a European hangover when he grabbed a second-half equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at promoted Elche in La Liga on Saturday. Valencia, expected to challenge Sociedad for a top-four fin-ish next May, lost 3-1 at Espanyol despite having taken an early lead though Helder Postiga.

In the late kickoff, promoted Villarreal came from behind again to claim a late 2-1 home win over Real Valladolid with a Gio-vani dos Santos penalty and a spectacular run and shot from Cani.

Sociedad impressed in their 2-0 Cham-pions League playoff first leg win at Olympique Lyonnais in midweek but were second best for much of the game at Elche.

Playing their first home game back in the top-flight, the hosts took the lead after two minutes when a corner flashed across the area and Ferran Corominas stabbed the ball in at the back post.

Sociedad were lucky not to concede again and struggled to get into the game until Elche’s earlier efforts started to take their toll in the second half. A cross from the right found Vela unmarked in the area after 74 minutes and the Mexico forward scuffed a shot inside the far post.

Former Arsenal striker Vela then curled

a long-range effort against the crossbar near the end. “The way the game went a point isn’t bad,” Vela told the club website. “Now we need to keep on working hard and go on and finish the job in the Champions League. Sociedad play their return match at home to Lyon this Wednesday.

Espanyol made a strong start against Valencia and had already missed three gilt-edged chances to score when, against the run of play, the visitors took the lead in the 10th minute.

Jonas laid the ball off for Postiga and the Portugal striker, brought in to replace Tot-tenham Hotspur new boy Roberto Soldado, netted his first goal for the club.

Espanyol levelled when David Lopez nodded in a corner in the 32nd minute and Cristian Stuani put them in front with a header which flew in off the far post past a stationary Diego Alves two minutes into the second half.

The hosts were lucky to still have 11 men on the pitch after Simao caught Adil Rami in the face with his elbow but they successfully foiled a Valencia side strug-gling to click under new coach Miroslav Djukic. With two minutes to go French forward Thievy Bifouma thundered a shot into the top corner for Espanyol.

“It is perhaps our best game since I have been coach at this club, above all the first half,” Espanyol’s former Mexico boss Javier Aguirre told a news conference.

PARIS — Andre-Pierre Gignac’s late winner gave Marseille a 1-0 win at Valenciennes on Saturday as last year’s runner-up maintained its perfect start to the French league season.

Marseille is provisionally top of the table after Lyon dropped its first points of the season in a surprise 1-0 home loss to Reims, which also saw it miss a pen-alty. Saint-Etienne will join Marseille if it beats Lille on Sunday.

“At the beginning of the season, points are important but it’s also a way to pre-pare ourselves for what will be a difficult September with a lot of matches in a row,” Marseille coach Elie Baup said. “The fact that we have nine points allows us to ap-proach well our first big match against Monaco next weekend.

“We still have a lot of things to work on but it’s better to correct things and to continue to work while winning our matches.”

Gignac scored with little more than five minutes remaining. Andre Ayew headed a corner toward goal and Valen-ciennes goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau could only palm the effort down for the onrushing Gignac to score his third goal in as many games.

Marseille should have taken the lead earlier in the match but failed to make the most of their opportunities. Valenciennes had a chance to level near the end but Opa Nguette fired wide of the left upright when

all alone in front of an empty net.The rain was pouring down in Lyon

and the players were clearly finding it difficult on the sodden pitch. So difficult were the conditions that there was more than a half hour delay to the start of the second half as groundsmen worked on the waterlogged pitch.

Play eventually did resume and Al-exandre Lacazette went close to giving Lyon the lead on the hour mark with a deft chipped volley which crashed off the crossbar — although the striker was flagged offside.

Lyon should have broken the deadlock in the 71st minute when it was awarded a penalty for a push on Jordan Ferri by Reims striker Gaetan Courtet. However, Clement Grenier blazed his spot kick over the bar.

Reims scored a somewhat fortunate winner five minutes later when Odair Fortes’ cross took a huge deflection off Milan Bisevac and the ball looped over Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and into the back of the net.

“We’re really disappointed,” Lyon coach Remi Garde said. “We did what we needed to do to win. We just couldn’t finish it off. We had our chances. Since the start of the season we have controlled half our matches. It’s really hard to leave here with zero points. A draw, at least, would have reflected the match. We have to grin and bear it.”

Newly-promoted Guingamp picked up its first points of the campaign with a 2-0 win over Lorient.

LONDON - Daniel Sturridge and Kolo Toure were both cast aside by clubs who traditionally vie for the Premier League title but they have found a home at Liverpool and proven their worth in the opening two matches of the season.

Sturridge, signed from Chelsea for 12 million pounds ($18.71 million) in January, was deemed surplus to requirements among Roman Abramovich’s squad of A-list players, but has scored the winner in both Liverpool’s Premier League clashes.

His goal against Aston Villa on Saturday was a combination of deft skill and sublime balance and fol-lowed on from his match-winning strike against Stoke City last week-end, a fizzing drive from distance.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge he has been employed in the central striking role that he has always craved, but was frequently made to forego at Stamford Bridge and has now scored 13 goals in his 18 ap-pearances for the Merseyside club.

A player who visibly thrives on confidence and wears the full gamut of emotions on his sleeve, Sturridge says his transformation is a simple matter of being given a platform on which to perform.

“I am just playing my normal

game - I have matured a little bit in terms of confidence and playing regularly,” he told Sky Sports on Saturday. “This is how I have been as a kid, but I’ve now been given a chance to show what I can do in a first-team environment.”

Toure, a title winner with both Manchester City and Arsenal, was released on a free transfer when his deal at the Etihad Stadium came to an end.

Having spent a lot of last season kicking his heels on the bench, he has brought experience to a Liver-pool backline shorn of leadership following the retirement of Jamie Carragher at the end of the last campaign.

His presence at the heart of the Liverpool defence was particularly noticeable against Villa where he stood up to the physical threat of powerhouse Christian Benteke and came out on top to help Liverpool keep their second clean sheet in a row. “He (Toure) has been bril-liant,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said.

“Obviously you know Jamie Carragher well and it was very important to get someone in of a similar ilk.

“We need that experience. He’s 32, he’s fit and he’s got that winning mentality and he’s been very influ-ential in the changing room.”

SHEFFIELD, England — Second-tier English club Millwall looked far from its usual self Satur-day after it forgot to bring the team kit for an away game and had to borrow its opponent’s.

Millwall, which normally plays in white on the road, was forced to line up in Sheffield Wednesday’s yellow away kit from last year when the Lions somehow left their

own at home in south London.Millwall then managed to get its

orange third kit to Hillsborough in time for the second half and changed clothes at halftime. The visitors earned a 2-2 draw after Andy Keogh equalized with a late penalty.

Millwall manager Steve Lomas said the kit mishap was “just an honest mistake, I think. These things happen. It just added to the madness of the game.” It was Mill-wall’s first point in four games.

The encyclopedia is written in English and includes about 7,000 articles on Hinduism and its prac-tices. The work also deals with In-dian history, languages, art, music, dance, architecture, medicine, and women’s issues. The entire ency-clopedia contains more than 1,000 illustrations and photographs.

Brightly colored images of Hin-duism’s deities fill entire pages, with foot-noted explanations of the forms and powers God can take in the religion.

“The goal was to have something pretty definitive - not just about Hin-duism, but about the whole South Asian tradition,” said University of South Carolina professor Hal French, who met with a small group of scholars in 1987 to offer academic support for the project.

“This hadn’t really been attempted before,” said French, 83, a distin-guished professor emeritus of reli-gious studies at the school and an associate editor. “It is a milestone of research that brought together both Eastern and Western scholarship.”

French, who specializes in the religions of Asia and served as an as-

sociate editor of the encyclopedia, said a primary inspiration for the work is one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, who is coming to the University of South Carolina conference that will celebrate the work’s launch.

(BTn)

(san)

According to him, the geopark previously directed to become a spearhead for people’s welfare indeed retained its own dilemma. The geopark area that should be protected as a terrestrial park of the Mount Batur caldera on the other side was massively exploited such as by the sand mining (quarry C).

Information collected during the

exam will serve as a baseline for future exams, planned when the cub is 3 days old and 5 days old. And the DNA sample, either from a swab of the cub’s mouth or feces, will be used to determine the cub’s father. Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated both with sperm from the zoo’s male panda, Tian Tian, as well as a male panda at the San Diego zoo, Gao Gao.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful.

As for new decree

(kmb29)

Reconstruction of sanctified effigy theftCulprit disposes kris of Rambut Siwi Temple to the sea

people having been waiting for him.

(kmb26)

An agent for Alec Baldwin and a publicist have not returned requests for comment.

he said.Meanwhile, for tourists and

people that had made a reservation of airline tickets coinciding with the schedules were expected to confirm directly to the ticket agency or related parties.
