Greg Quicke from Broome Astro Tours and BBC/ABC Stargazing Live, in collaboration with Dianne Appleby from Nyamba Buru Yawuru, presented their cultural viewpoints and knowledge about the stars. It was a fantastic evening at Gantheaume Point, which included origin stories, fact sharing and a collaborative discussion focusing on Yawuru knowledge and western knowledge devised from the night sky. The topics covered included: cross-cultural perspectives, storytelling as a knowledge source, origin stories, symbolism in different cultures, and collective learning in both western and Yawuru culture. The students learnt these complementary knowledges about the night sky and how long it has been important to human understanding. Due to the fact that Broome is so far north, it was clear to the students that we get a great view of both the southern and northern hemisphere night sky, including the Southern Cross, Orion and the Big Dipper, which can be seen at the same time. We even had an unexpected appearance of a “live” dinosaur on the beach before sunset. Our thanks goes to Dianne Appleby and Greg Quicke for their support of this initiative and look forward to placing it on our calendar as an annual event. These stories and more can also be found on our Facebook and Instagram sites. Please look us up and enjoy our posts. An unexpected highlight to commence the evening was the rogue appearance of a dinosaur fossicking on the beach nearby. Far above: Students viewing the first few stars to appear on dusk. Broome dry season is a wonderful time with a huge range of happenings in the town. As a result, students’ commitment to sport and community events quadruple. It’s no different at school with trips and excursions, sports days, Country Week and Kimberley Cup. So it’s even more important that students have a very organised study schedule and maintain a balanced load. The second half of this term encompasses assignments, assessments, tests and, for some students, exams. This culminates in the first formal student report for 2017. School is ultimately a place for learning and achievement and it is our aim that every student does as well as possible. We will continue to do our very best to support students through this busy period. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns.

Enjoy the cool weather and have a wonderful rest of Term 2.

Careers Week: a resounding successBy Andy Chapman I CaVE Coordinator

The recently held Careers Week 2017 was a resounding success with wonderful feedback from students, business and industry. Lunchtime talks by the Australian Defence Force, Shell, Inpex and the universities were all very well attended.

The highlight of the week was the Year 10 Striving for Excellence Day, which was launched by remarkable keynote speaker, Kia Dowell an ex-women’s NBA player and now successful business owner who hails from Turkey Creek in the East Kimberley. The day continued with the Careers Expo which had a wonderful array of stalls. FESA and Army vehicles and activities were highly popular with students.

Many thanks to all the contributors from our supportive business community, the support of Inpex and Shell and the Working Group that put Expo together led by Wunan and Aboriginal Workforce Development.

Pop-up restaurant provides unique culinary experience for studentsMelissa Denkinger I Food Technology TeacherEarly this month the Year 11 Certificate I in Hospitality class and the Year 11 Food Science and Technology class were lucky enough to participate in a “bush tucker” cooking lesson with the chefs from Fervor. Fervor is a Australian travelling pop-up restaurant and is ably led by Executive Chef Paul ‘Yoda’ Iskov. It is based in Margaret River and the staff spend much of the year travelling around WA in a truck and a hilux providing unique culinary experiences for its diners. The aim of Fervor is to harness local Australian produce with some of the most breathtaking scenery in Western Australia.

The Broome SHS students participated in an extended cooking lesson that gave them the opportunity to taste a range of local ingredients including sunrise lime, salt bush leaves and sandlewood nuts. The students prepared eight

local ingredients as accompaniments and they also prepared and cooked up some emu, kangaroo and crocodile. A homemade damper rounded out the menu.

It was an amazing experience and a chance for the students to see that cooking does not just have to be done in a traditional restaurant kitchen – studying Hospitality opens many doors for travel and an opportunity to create new and innovative experiences for others. A huge well done to the students for their positive participation and a special thanks to the Fervor team for their time during their busy travelling schedule.

Aspire UWA Camp 2017Olivia Mart I Health and Physical Education teacherIn early May, 14 Broome Senior High School students travelled to Perth for the 2017 UWA Aspire camp. The program aims to raise aspirations for future education and is designed to deliver

a comprehensive insight into university life and possible areas of study. Students were offered some fantastic activities that were hands-on and extremely engaging. They went on multiple industry visits, participated in activities at the university, attended an open space group and toured some of the residential colleges close to the university.

The camp was very informative and enjoyable and enabled students to return to Broome with a greater understanding about pathways to get to university, the numerous courses that are offered and what overall life is like at university and, in particular, UWA. Congratulations to all students who were selected to attend the camp and thank you for your participation and engagement in all Aspire activities.

Athletics WA workshops benefit students in sports and activitiesBy Bree Watt I Head of Learning Area, Health and Phys EdElite Athletics WA coach Lindsay Bunn and rising track star Sasha Zhoya recently visited our school to run some workshops for our students. Sasha is a young Perth high school student who has recently had some outstanding results at a national level in track, long jump and pole vault. He has his heart set on the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo and was keen to show our students

some of the techniques taught to him by Lindsay that have seen him improve over the past few years. Lindsay explained to the students that the sprint techniques were the same as those taught to Usain Bolt by his coach.

The visit coincided with the relaunch of the Broome Senior Special Athletics Academy which is running on Mondays and Wednesdays to promote fitness development and technique to benefit students in all sports and activities.

Broome Senior High School a keen host for training teachersBy Saeed Amin I PrincipalNow as one of the top schools in the state, we are inundated with requests from universities and prac students to spend time at Broome Senior High School. As well as making a difference to the lives of our students, we are also committed to making a difference to training the next generation of teaching professionals. This term we welcome five students to our school and in 2017 we will host over 10 students across a number of learning areas.

Ashleigh Barron is currently studying Health and Physical Education, minoring in Science. She grew up in the Wheatbelt but is currently studying in Perth. Ashleigh said she wanted a practicum with a difference.

“I wanted the experience of a rural prac and almost 2,000 km away from home seemed rural enough. Broome Senior High School has welcomed me with open arms, with such supportive staff and wonderful students. Under the mentoring of Scott Beatty, it has been great to get involved in many health, physical education and outdoor education classes and I’m excited to be a part of the Year 11 and 12 Geikie Gorge Outdoor Education Camp.”

Byron Hudson is in his last semester of study at Notre Dame University in Fremantle and loving his time in Broome. Byron is teaching both Science and HASS but his specialty is Chemistry, and he is being mentored by Andrew Stocks.

“The Broome community and wider Kimberley region are amazing and I would love to spend more time exploring the extent of the beautiful surrounding landscape,” said Byron.

Holly Wilson and Sally Olver have joined the Maths Department this term and Kendra Anderson will be in Health and Phys Ed. We welcome all of the prac students to our school and would like to wish them a successful term.

Teaching prac students, Byron Hudson and Ashleigh Barron are enjoying their time at Broome Senior High School.

Let me start by saying that CaVE stands for Careers and Vocational Education in case you were thinking we are relics from an ancient time. Having said that, four of us are pretty experienced, if you get my drift. Our experienced staff are: Shary Umemba, Cynthia Jenkins, John Clark and Andy Chapman. The youth is brought in by Anthony Maher and Samuel Alexeeff, in their first and second years at BSHS respectively. Outstanding admin support is delivered by Renee Stones and Daphne Gillett. Our aim is to provide all students with quality VET programs and up-to-date careers advice. Hopefully we do that in spades.

PROFILING THE CaVE TEAM

Andy Chapman: Head of Careers and Vocational Education, Teacher Y12 Careers and Work Studies Y9. (Loves riding his bike and is highly unsuccessful in avoiding injury when fishing.)

Shary Umemba: Teacher of Certificate I & II Sport & Recreation and Work Studies Y9/10 (Has been teaching at BSHS for over 22 years and loves catching up with students she has taught in the past.)

Cynthia Jenkins: Teacher of Certificate I, II & III Business and Work Studies Year 9/10 (Has been teaching at BSHS for 10 years, but is currently on leave due to injury.)

John Clark: Year 12 Leader, Teacher Y12 Careers and Work Studies Y9/10 (Enjoys the ocean and all it has to offer, but is most passionate about Surf Lifesaving.)

Anthony Maher: Teacher of the Progressive Education Program (PEP) (Is passionate about Aboriginal Education, loves dumplings and is all for the Dockers.)

Sam Alexeeff: Year 7 Leader, Teacher of Aboriginal Studies Y11/12, and Work Studies Year 9/10 (Balances teaching time with his new role of Year Leader this year, and loves eating biscuits).

Renee Stones: School Officer, VET support (Is a mad keen Dockers supporter, and goes to all lengths to ensure students are setup for their Workplace Learning).

BSHS announced champion school in Science and Engineering ChallengeBy Andrew Stocks I Science teacherThe Broome Science and Engineering Challenge recently took place with 150 Year 9/10 students from five Kimberley high schools involved in the day-long competition. I am thrilled to announce that we came away as champion school. The challenge was presented by the University of Newcastle, and 27 of our Year 9 students took part in a number of science and engineering activities. Students were awarded points for each activity.

The highest scoring winning schools from each region/zone will subsequently have the opportunity to compete against each other

for a place in the state and, perhaps, the national competition.

Right L-R: Nikki Slag, Sibylle Wenger, Ben Shipway-Carr and Rossi Johnson take on the challenge of constructing a catapult.

New Members welcomed to Follow the DreamBy Tim Gray I Follow the Dream CoordinatorTwenty Year 7 students and their families met supporting school and sponsor representatives at the Mangrove Hotel recently for an evening dedicated to welcoming the students into the Follow the Dream: Partnerships for Success Program. All parties had to agree to a series of commitments in a Compact Agreement which is aimed at supporting the academic development of students throughout their high school years.

The Follow the Dream: Partnerships for Success (Broome) program is a joint program supported by the Department of Education (WA), Catholic Education and Woodside. It is currently the largest of over 20 different sites across Australia managed by the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation. There are over one hundred Broome students involved in the program, including 25 Year 12 members who will graduate this year.
