The PasTor’s Desk

Dear Friends,May the Lord give you peace!

Thanks for a great week and best wishes for a great one to come!

Fr. Frank can be reached at [email protected]

(Continued in next column)

At every funeral the Presider blesses the body of the deceased with holy water

saying the words, “In the waters of Baptism N. died with Christ and rose with him to new life. May he/she now share with him eternal glory.” Near the Baptismal font and the Paschal Candle we have placed a “Book of Life.” We invite anyone who would like to place the name of a dearly departed family member or friend to inscribe his/her name with any remembrance. It has been the Church’s custom to not only commend the dead to God at the time of their funeral, but also to support their loved ones with the prayers of the faith community and the hope of all those who have been promised future resurrection. As we begin this custom, let us remember all those who have gone before us and place them in the loving care of God, our Father.

Book of Life

As the 4th of July weekend comes to a close and you’re wondering what to do with yourself for the next week, I give you the St. Mary’s Carnival! This great week-long event begins Monday, July 7, and runs through Saturday, July 12. This is a great night out for the family, a great way to see friends and a great way to support St. Mary’s School! Come on out and have a good time. Remember the car raffle! Tickets will be sold all week at the Carnival. Many thanks to everyone who works so hard to make this event a success!Next Sunday, July 13, Fr. Larry will celebrate a farewell mass at noon followed by a reception in the Carnevale Center. Please join us! Speaking of transitions, Joanne Miller has served the St. Mary’s community for over 10 years as our Outreach Director and has decided that it is time to move on. She has overseen the Food Pantry and our entire social ministry. She has helped countless people who have found themselves in tight spots and needed a leg up. Joanne has been the face of the compassion and love of St. Mary’s Church to so many people for so long. I am personally very grateful to Joanne for her ministry and on behalf of the friars, staff and entire St. Mary’s community I thank her and wish her the very best! The Little Sisters of the Poor will make their annual fundraising visit to St. Mary’s on July 19-20. The Sisters will be here to talk about their ministry to the elderly in Totowa and throughout the world. They will take up a free-will offering at the doors as you leave church. Thanks for your generosity to this great cause!Over the last couple of weeks you have heard and been reading about the new Ministry of Greeters we will be instituting here at St. Mary’s. This ministry is not the same as the Ministry of Usher. Greeters will be at each door and the elevator for each mass welcoming people to St. Mary’s, perhaps handing out the worship aid and answering any questions a person might have about our community. This is one more way to welcome people—new people and veterans alike—to our church community. Ushers will continue their important ministry to help people find seats and take up and secure the collection.

Finally, today brings us back to Ordinary Time in our liturgical calendar. All of the Easter celebrations and Feasts of the Lord are behind us. We will be in Ordinary Time until Advent begins on November 30. Now as we return to Ordinary Time the priest wears green, the liturgy is a bit subdued, the gospel is about the day-to-day preaching and teaching of Jesus and we pay attention to the ordinary rhythm of life. Like every other part of our life, it is good to return to ordinary time. Think of how relieved you feel when the holidays or some big event in your life is over!

Ordinary Time is really where we live most of our lives. It is great to have special celebrations, but our life really happens in the ordinary and that is good. Now just because it’s ordinary doesn’t mean we shouldn’t pay close attention to what’s going on. Just as God comes to us in the ordinary liturgical time so, too, does God come to us in the ordinary time of our own lives. Pay attention to the countless ways God is touching you and calling you during the ordinary times of your life—shopping, cooking, working, cleaning, loving, crying, laughing and just quietly thinking. The possibilities for encountering God in the ordinariness of our lives are endless. Look for them, give thanks for them and enjoy them!

Pace e Bene,

Fr. Frank Sevola, OFMPastor

Tree of LifeA sculpture of our Parish Tree of Memories

is in the church vestibule. The tree affords a special and permanent remembrance of those who have shared God’s love with us and with our community. You may wish to remember a loved one, a friend or a special event in your life. A leaf for the tree will be engraved for a $500 gift. For more information, please stop by the Parish Office.

SUNDAY READINGS

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Zechariah 9:9 10—This is a prophecy of the coming of the Messiah to Jerusalem. He will come, not as a King, but as a humble savior, riding on an ass. Second Reading: Romans 8:9, 11 13—Contrasting “flesh and spirit,” Paul urges that all who live for material things abandon the temptations of the flesh and rise to life in the “Spirit.” Gospel: Matthew 11:25 30—Jesus speaks lovingly and gently when he invites all those who are weary and burdened with life to seek relief and respite in him. He says, “Your souls will find rest, for my yoke is easy and my burden light.”

And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Luke: 11:9

Consultant for Educational Technology—The Diocese of Paterson Catholic Schools Office is seeking applicants for the position of Consultant for Educational Technology. A complete job description, position requirements, and application materials are available at http://link.patdioschools.org/techjob.

“If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then he who raised Christ from the dead will bring your mortal bodies to life also through the Spirit dwelling in you…” “Come to me you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you. Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart.”How often we are asked to give our address, or telephone number, or provide some form of identification. We are also warned sternly to protect our identity from theft. We use passwords, shredders and blocks to assure privacy and protection.

One personal question for all of us today is whether the Spirit of Jesus lives with you or not. I struggle to answer the question, but know that when I strive for holiness and live the life of grace, the Spirit of God finds His address in me. Reassured of that presence happily and boldly respond to the invitation to grow closer to Jesus.

Yes, I become weary, but the psalm tells us God does not tire, ‘unweary is Your love for us.’ I am constantly reminded of His steadfast love. I picture His open arms reaching out to me, especially in moments of trial or need. ‘Yes’, He says ‘come to me’. He picks me up, like a cool refreshing drink on a hot afternoon. He lifts me beyond what causes me to hesitate or stumble. He invites me again. He gently places me on His shoulder to carry me home. As He does so, let His words echo in my heart ‘I will refresh you.’
