IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FOR SPECIAL CHILDREN

All children can benefit from the exercise, energy release, and pure enjoyment of playing sports, and this

includes children with special needs.

Allowing special children to have equal access to sports can help:

• Improve motor and balancing skills

• Build muscle strength, coordination and flexibility

• Increase attention span, sequential memory, level of response

• Improve spatial awareness and body awareness (Kinesthetic Sense)

• Decrease secondary health complications like obesity, cholesterol

• Give an outlet for energy and helps cope with stress and anxiety

• Improvement in behavior, academics, self-confidence and build friendships

• Experience sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, taste of winning

• Result in greater motivation to perform

SPECIAL CHILDREN – SPECIFIC NEEDS

• These kids have special needs because they might need medicine, therapy, or extra help in school — stuff other kids don't typically need or only need once in a while.

• In a Physical Education context, we can say that children with Special Needs are children with same needs as their peers. The difference is that some of the students need extra support. Thus the objectives of an adapted physical activity program is not very different from a regular physical education program

• There need to run a child centric program is more pronounced in case of special children as every child may present a unique set of challenges

• Content

• Methodology

• Teacher : Student Ratio (1:10)

• The best learning / teaching scenario varies from student to student. Hence the objective of the program would be to create and maximize the least restrictive environment

SPECIAL CHILDREN – SPECIAL NEEDS

Each child is different. The coach should understand the child and how he or she plays or takes instructions. The coach needs to

know how to properly communicate and work with the child to make sports participation the positive, safe, and healthy

experience it should be.

Things to keep in mind:

Coach’s Language

“Specially abled students”

Not “Special needs students.”

Not “Disabled students.”

Not “Autistic students.”

Considerations during training

Safety first! - additional safety precautions in terms of play spaces used and props and equipment

PATIENCE!

Be Positive, Give lot of praise!

Increase size and color of props (Special props for Specially abled)

Finish the activity before student gets frustrated

Explanation of activities through demonstrations -  need to break up the activities into simpler steps

Allow sufficient time for students to perform the skill

HOW DID IT START

Lalaji Memorial Omega International School (LMOIS) in Chennai is a school which has categorically assessed the special abilities of

a considerable amount of children and placed them in separate sections and follows a different method of teaching the regular

curriculum to them. EduSports, being an integral part of the school, serving to the physical education needs of the school, also felt

the need for extra care for the special children.

What EduSports could do for the special kids? How could they experience the joy of physical activity and play, and at the

same time reap the benefits of a structured physical education programme?

These were the questions constantly being asked by the EduSports team to themselves, and during July 2013 we found an answer

to those questions. The EduSports team in collaboration with the school coordinator Dr. Shamala and Mrs. Priti Venkatesan the

special education department head LMOIS sprang into action by giving innovative physical activities to the children at the

beginning of every day.

The activities were designed such that with the use of EduSports props it aimed to reduce the children’s difficulties in

attention span,

muscle tone,

crossing of the midline,

spatial sense,

hand eye coordination,

slow learning etc.

These structured sports activities had a very positive impact on the children:

The children were active throughout the day after starting off each day with these activities,

They were more energetic

They participated in the activities enthusiastically and had a lot of fun

There was improvement in learning abilities

IMPACT OF THE PROGRAM

Overall Fitness Improvement

CASE STUDY 1 - LALAJI MEMORIAL OMEGA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, CHENNAI, INDIA

Grade-wise Fitness Improvement

Fitness Improvement is measured based on the ‘Fitness Quotient’ which takes into account all parameters of the EduSports Fitness Assessment. In LMOIS, Chennai there was an assessment conducted on either side of this program to assess the impact of the program

WHAT THE SCHOOL HAD TO STAY?

“Since these activities are kinesthetic it improved the hand eye coordination of the children and also we could see academic

improvements in the long run, indeed this service has been very valuable for the children, we are planning to work the same way

with EduSports even the next year to bring in a holistic development for them”

– Priti Venkatesan, Head of the Special Education Department, LMOIS, Chennai

“The activities were fun and at the same time the children learned to manage their body parts, it was a wonderful thing which was

conceptualized by the EduSports team, I thoroughly enjoyed the activities as I was observing the activities when it was first

initiated, it was just amazing, these were beautiful exercises and within a month of the activities being started children showed

some improvement, the teachers handling the classes say the children know their space management better, have a better hand

eye coordination and they are better adaptive individuals, thank you EduSports”

– Dr. Shamala, Coordinator grades 1 to 7, LMOIS, Chennai

favourite period of the children

in school.

Variety of exercises. Not only

physical exercises, but children

also learn to face hurdles and also

learn to be social.

The activities have been structured as

per the needs of each student. This
