80% of Nicaraguans live below the poverty line, less than $2 a day. They struggle to feed their children, provide for their families, or simply survive.

On the outskirts of the capital city of Managua an entire community scratches a living from Central America’s largest rubbish dump, La Chureca, just to make ends meet. Exposed to severe and potentially lethal health risks every day, they lack the skills and the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.

In 2012, 10% of families living in La Chureca received a stable income because the mothers were given the chance to do something more: they learnt to recycle paper with us, and received a fair wage for doing so. In turn, their children could also stop working and went to school.

The Earth Education Project (EEP) provides women with artisan training to produce beautiful paper & recycled products, as well as workshops on education, social development and health.

EEP is more than paper. EEP empowers women to lift their families out of poverty.

Empowering Women in Nicaragua

Our mission is for the workshop to become a sustainable, community led business, with EEP beneficiaries running the programmes and teaching other women.

In 2009, 50% of EEP participants were illiterate. In 2013, 100% of participants are literate. Not one of their children still works; the women who attend our workshops can support their families with the economic stipend they earn.

EEP’s workshop is a place of learning as well as employment. Participants must attend all school classes and workshops to receive the full economic support thus ensuring the development of their education and social skills. It’s a programme that works: learning and work go hand in hand.

“I know in the future things will be better for me. I have stability now and work with dignity. The project has

supported me in my most difficult moments.” Maudelia, 21, EEP Participant

The Earth Education Project (EEP) is a registered UK Charity providing women in Nicaragua with education and employment opportunities through recycling.

At our workshop, women learn to recycle scrap paper by hand and produce beautiful cards, books, and gift bags. In 2013 EEP jewellery will also be available. The women receive monthly economic support for participating in the workshop, which they use to feed and support their families.

The EEP workshop runs the following programmes:

Paper recycling: Transforming scrap paper into artisan materials by hand and following time-honoured techniques, to create unique, high-quality products.

School classes: Filling the gap in education for those 45% of Nicaraguan girls who do not finish primary school. We teach our participants starting from the age of 15 to read and write.

Nutrition workshops: Teaching mothers how they can ensure that their families are receiving the right nutrients for healthy development. We grow vegetables, teach them to cook healthily, and provide food baskets.

Social development: Focusing on issues prevalent in the community including domestic abuse, HIV/AIDS and pregnancy, through monthly social development workshops.

Healthcare: Supporting 50% of the women’s and their family’s medical costs, providing a safety net so that food, work or school are not sacrificed for illness. Pneumonia, asthma, TB, malaria and conjunctivitis are common in La Chureca, and access to medicine in Nicaragua is not subsidised. In 2013 we are partnering with New York Medical School to offer a more extensive health programme.
