The weekend shooting of threechildren in gang crossfire hasleft a community calling for an-swers to stem the tide of crime inthe area.

In the latest incident on Saturdaythree children were caught in thecrossfire of two gangs on the cor-ners of Vlamboom and Vaalbosstreets in Bonteheuwel at about22:00.

The three innocent victims, who

live in Vlamboom Street, were ontheir way home from their grand-mother, when the gunfire eruptedaround them, leaving one dead andtwo seriously injured.

Sade Boltman (12) died bleedingin the street after bullets struck herin the chest and neck, while 17-year-old Tiffany Boltman was shot in theright foot. The third victim, QuadeFredericks (12) was hit in the leftcheek and had to undergo surgeryto remove the bullet.

Police arrived on the scene with-in minutes but they also came un-

der fire – however they managed toarrest a 21-year-old in connectionwith the shooting.

This latest shooting has left thecommunity angry at the destruc-tion that gangsterism and crime iscausing in the community.

Annette Johnson is a mother oftwo small children and one of sever-al residents in the area who live inconstant fear of their safety.

“You never know when thesemonsters will start shooting eachother,” she said.

“The children already know

when they start hearing gunfirethey have to stay away from thewindow and sit on the ground incase bullets come through.

“Every time they have to walk toschool, even play outside I am wor-ried about them, and that is not theway that that they should be grow-ing up.

“I don’t know what has happenedto our youth because this used to bea safe neighbourhood when I wasyoung,” she said.

Clive January has been living inthe area for 40 years, and believes

that the deterioration has flour-ished because the youth have notbeen given positive role models inpopular culture.

“Bonteheuwel was one of the cen-tres of the struggle against apart-heid in the ’70s and ’80s,” he saidpassionately. Many of the impor-tant role players in the strugglecame from here.

“Our children have been brain-washed into believing in the fakerole models that popular cultureshoves down their throats, and weare now reaping the harvest.”

This was the scene on Saturday

when theFransMassynFelineCarecattery was launched in BelvilleSouth.

Not even a few drops of rain couldstop the joyous occasion from hap-pening.

Many animal lovers gathered towitness the opening of the cattery,

which features a storage room, ma-ternity ward, two kitten cages andthree adult cat cages.

Frans Massyn who hails fromBellville says he decided to havethis cattery built at the Animal An-ti-Cruelty League (AACL) after heread about their troubles in the Ty-

gerBurger.“I saw the article in TygerBurger

about the AACL who was having afunction at Willowbridge to raisemuch-needed funds for their cat-tery. I then contacted Alma, whosenumber was in the paper and toldher that I wanted to assist and re-build the cattery.”

He says he did it for his love forcats. “Although building the cat-tery cost a lot of money it was allworth it, ensuring that the cats arehappy.”

Alma Schaap, an adoptions offic-er at AACL, says they are ecstatic.

“The previous cattery was in abad condition and cats had to be eu-thanised because they were gettingill. We were so thrilled when Franslet us know that he wanted to builda new cattery.”

She says the cattery is important

because cats are not given the prop-er recognition.

“Cats often receive the short endof the stick and some people thinkthat dogs are more important, whenthey are both equally important.Cats breed more and it is importantfor us that they are taken care ofand have the correct shelter; andthat’s why this cattery is so impor-tant.”

Schaap says they are always inneed of cat and kitten food, and alldonations will be appreciated.

In less than a week, police have confiscatedR28 000 worth of drugs in the Blue Downsarea in their fight against drugs.

The most recent of these events waswhen the Mfuleni police acted on informa-tion received from the community inWesbank.

Police were notified that there was ahouse that dealt in dagga. The house wassearched during the early hours of the

morning on 12 April at 02:20.During their search, police were able to

retrieve a blue barrel full of dagga weigh-ing in at 50kg. When the barrel was opened,233 parcels of dagga were found and threeplastic bags full of dagga.

Two men aged 26 and 30 were arrestedand charged with dealing in dagga.

The Western Cape flying squad membersshowed no sign of slowing down either as

arrests were made on the eve of Good Fri-day. On 4 April, they managed to confiscateone parcel of dagga, 182 small packets oftik, 1001 stoppe dagga, 96 half Mandrax tab-lets, 19 whole Mandrax tablets, 64 quarterMandrax tablets and just over R2 000 incash in a house in Wesbank.

A 42-year-old man and 41-year-old wom-an were arrested and charged with dealingin drugs.

Big drug bust follows community tip­off

A 31-year-old man was arrested on Wednes-day last week by the Mfuleni police after itwas discovered that he was carrying a handgrenade with him.

While police were on patrol in Wesbank,they were informed by community membersof a suspicious person walking around. Itwas said that the man was carrying an explo-sive.

Police responded swiftly after receivingthe information and while looking for thesuspect spotted a suspicious person with aplastic bag in his possession.

At the sight of the police, the man walkedinto the yard of the nearest house anddropped the plastic bag into a black rubbishbin. After the police opened the bin for fur-ther inspection, they found the plastic bag

which contained a hand grenade. The gre-nade still had the safety pin intact.

The man was arrested and police were ledto a house in Delft. Two more suspects werearrested here – one 32 and the other 44.

Lt Col Fred Jacobs, acting station com-mander of Mfuleni Police Station would liketo thank the community for assisting the po-lice in the fight against crime.

Police arrest man carrying live grenade

Thanks to the assistance of thecommunity, the Mfuleni policehave arrested two suspects in-volved in two separate shooting in-cidents last Tuesday.

Through hard work and dedica-tion, police left no stone unturnedto find the two suspects.

The first of these incidents hap-pened on 14 February at 15:00. Thetwo suspects approached a manwho was standing outside the yardof his girlfriend’s house inWesbank. Both suspects proceededto take out firearms and startedshooting at the man. While makingan attempt to escape from the hailof bullets, the victim was shot.

The suspects managed to shoothim in the right leg, shoulder and

face. He was left for dead as the sus-pects fled on foot. The victim man-aged to survive the attack.

. The second incident was onMonday, 12 March at 01:00. A manwas walking home from a party inWesbank when two suspectschased him. He was fatally shotand the suspects fled the scene onfoot once more.

After investigation, the two sus-pects were found hiding in a housein Van Rhynsdorp. The two 21-year-old suspects were arrested.Both suspects were charged withattempted murder and murder.

The acting station commander ofMfuleni Police Station, Lt Col FredJacobs would like to thank thecommunity for their assistance.

One thing that is putting a smile on the face of MfuleniPolice Station’s communications officer is that the com-munity is assisting the police diligently.

Recently community members from Blue Downs, espe-cially Wesbank, have been assisting the police with thefight against crime by providing information on crimes,according to Capt Nomathemba Muavha, Mfuleni policespokesperson.

She went further to say that the community has beenresponding to articles that they have seen in the paper.When information has been given out about criminals thatare on the loose, the community responds with positiveinformation that has lead to some arrests.

One such case has been the community’s assistance incoming forward with information on the article “Armedrobbers on the run”, which appeared in TygerBurger on11 April.

Die voortbestaan van Badisawordbedreigdeurdatkinderbe-skermingsdienste swaar getrefword deur die gebrek aan rege-ringsfonds-toedelings.

In die afgelope drie jaar is diestaatstoelaag van die provinsialedepartement nie verhoog nie ensou dié situasie voortduur, voor-spel dit niks goed nie.

Annemarie Bezuidenhout, Ba-disa sedirekteurvir bemarking enfondswerwing, sê dié organisasie,

met kantore in Bellville, verloormaatskaplike werkers omdat hul-le nie mededingende salarisse kanaanbied nie. “Ons word slegs perpos gesubsidieer en dit sluit nieeens die ekstra onkostes, soosbrandstof, in nie,” sê sy.

Dít beteken die diens kan nie ge-lewer word soos dit moet nie ensou dit wyer uitkring, sal dit nood-wendig beteken Badisa sal sy deu-re moet sluit.

Een van Badisa se programme,No Limits, het pas die maatskapli-ke dienste wat dit lewer gestaakweens ’n geldtekort. Dié dienste is

nou onder ander maatskaplikeprogramme verdeel sodat dit nieverlore gaan nie, maar die stakingvan dienste weens geldelike tekor-te hang soos ’n swaard oor diemaatskaplike wêreld.

Die staking van maatskaplikedienste weens ’n tekort aan geldbenadeel gemeenskappe, want souBadisa weens geldnood dieselfdepad loop, is dit hulle wat daaron-der ly.

“Ons is bekend vir ons goeiedienslewering, maar die gebrekaan regeringsfonds-toedelings salbeteken die mense aan die ont-

vangkant gaan nie dieselfde dienskan ontvang nie,” sê Annemarie.

Sy sê indien kinders wat tans inpleegsorg is, se pleegouers niemeer hulp ontvang nie, bestaandie risiko dat dié diens verlore kangaan omdat daar nie ’n behoorlikehulpbronprogram bestaan nie.

Tans is Badisa in afwagting opgoeie nuus van die Lotto-raad ooróf hulle geld sal ontvang, maar ookdít sal ’n tydelike hulp wees.

“Ons kan net ’n kwart van onsvorige toekenning verwag, wantomdat al meer organisasies aan-soek doen by dié raad, word die be-

drae wat aan elke begunstigde toe-gesê word al kleiner. Om te voor-kom dat ander programme weesfondsnood gestaak moet word, hetBadisa ’n projek, Nog een Veldtog/One more Campaign, begin. “Hier-mee sê ons ons weet die nood isgroot en baie organisasies is in dieknyp, maar ons versoek mense omnog net één keer te help. Honderde straatkinders in die noordelikevoorstede sal voortaan geen maatskaplikedienste ontvang nie, wanneer die maatskapli-ke program van No Limits aan die einde vanApril ophou voortbestaan.

Die program, wat ’n holistiese benaderingtot dié kwessie neem, het vir meer as 10 jaarlank uitstekende werk gedoen onder diestraatkinders en hoërisiko-kinders in dienoordelike voorstede van Kaapstad. Maar ditwas veral die kinders van Scottsdene,Scottsville, Wallacedene, Parow en Kuilsri-vier wat die meeste hieruit gebaat het.

Die program het in 1995 as ’n projek van dieChristelike Maatskaplike Raad in Parow be-gin, maar het in 1999 geregistreer as ’n onaf-hanklike program vir straatkinders. Sedert2003 het die program deel uitgemaak van Ba-disa-maatskaplike dienste.

Maatskaplike werkers van die organisasiehet elke week sakesentrums regoor die noor-delike voorstede besoek om kinders wat op

straat bedel op te spoor en te probeer help. Bydie No Limits-sentrum in Bellville is die kin-ders met onmiddellike nood bygestaan metkos, klere, persoonlike hiegiëne en vaardig-heidsontwikkeling, terwyl die ander wat netop straat bedel ondersteuning ontvang het omweer terug te gaan na hul ouerhuise en in teskakel by skole.

Skole in die gebied sowel as huisgesinnewaaruit die kinders kom, is op ’n gereelde ba-sis besoek om die welstand van die kinderste monitor.Verder is vakansieprogramme enouerleiding aangebied vir ouers met hoërisi-ko-kinders.

Volgens die programbestuurder IsabelSwarts ervaar die program egter al jare lankernstige finansiële druk.

“Die staatstoelaag wat die program van dieprovinsiale departement van maatskaplikeontwikkeling ontvang, het die afgelope driejaar nog nie vermeerder nie, hoewel perso-neelsalarisse aangepas moes word en daaglik-se uitgawes saam met inflasie toegeneemhet,” sê sy.

Voorheen het die program ’n toelaag vandie Kaapse munisipalititeit ontvang wat ooknie meer die geval is nie. “Ná ’n jarelange ge-sukkel is die tenderwat onsbydiemunisipali-teit ingedien het, in Maart vanjaar goedge-keur, (en word dit in klein maandelikse be-drae uitbetaal), maar was dit toe al te laat omdie organisasie te red,” sê sy.

Volgens haar het die organisasie ook nieverlede jaar geld van die loteryraad ontvangnie en is die donasies wat die organisasie tansontvang van onder andere die gemeenskaps-kas, vrywilligers enondernemingsnie genoegom die bal aan die rol te hou nie.

“Dit spyt my om die aankondiging te doen.Probleemgevalle ten opsigte van kinders watop straat bedel, sal voortaan by Badisa semaatskaplike werk-kantore in die betrokkegebiede aangemeld moet word. Dit sal natuur-lik die werklas van Badisa se maatskaplikewerk-kantore vermeerder,” sê sy.

Volgens Paul Hooper van die Wes-Kaapsestraatkindforum, is die verlies van die organi-sasie ’n groot terugslag.”

Dirk Coetzee beweer hy was ’n slagoffer vandebietkaart-boewe wat by die FNB-kitsbankby die SuperSpar in Kuilsrivier sy rekeningleeg getrek het.

Gewapen met ’n kloning-toestel kan boe-we die inligting van ’n kaart, wat daardeurgetrek word, op ’n ander kaart oordra en dangebruik.

“Ek het Woensdagmiddag 4 April by dieOTM gestop om geld te trek toe ’n man voormy besig was om geld te trek. Nadat hy ge-loop het, het ek my kaart ingedruk toe ’nsnaakse boodskap, wat ek nog nie voorheengesien het nie, op die skerm verskyn het,”sê hy.

Volgens Coetzee het daar drie opsies opdie skerm verskyn waarvan een ’n opsie wasom die transaksie te kanselleer. “Toe ek ditkanselleer, het dieselfde man wat voor mywas, my probeer help en vir my probeer sêwat om te doen,” sê hy.

Dit was eers die volgende oggend dat hybesef het sy geld is gesteel. “Daar was tweeboodskappe op my selfoon van geld wat ge-trek was. R2 900 is onttrek teen 23:58 en R610om 00:01 die oggend,” sê hy. Coetzee het systorie aan die bank vertel en hulle het on-middellik ondersoek omtrent die onregma-tige onttrekkings ingestel. Hy het ’n krimi-nele saak by die polisie aanhangig gemaak.“Ek weet nie of so iets al in die gebied gebeurhet nie, maar ek wil mense net waarsku ombaie versigtig te wees,” sê hy.

Kaptein Isaac van Niekerk, kommunika-siebeampte vir die Kuilsrivier-polisie, sêhulle het al ’n aantal soortgelyke gevalle ge-had en dat die saak ondersoek word.

The Iris House Children’s Hospice, situat-ed in the northern suburbs, is an organisa-tion committed to enriching the quality oflife for special needs children and youngpeople with life-limiting or life-threateningconditions; such as cancer, special syn-dromes and cerebral palsy.

Thehospice is currently inneedof fundingso that they can get a building to cater forall the children’s needs.

“We are so excited and grateful to be a ben-eficiary of the concert,” says Sue van derLinde, founder of Iris House.

“The money will be put to good use and wewill definitely be able to better our services.Our aim is to get a building – right now allthe paper work is being done at my house.Currently we are providing support to fami-lies but our goal is to also provide accommo-dation to the children.”

The hospice, which is nearly a year old, of-

fers assistance and support to families intheir homes with the aim of making theirlives a bit easier.

“Currently we have six volunteers, who gointo the homes of the 16 families we assist,”says Van der Linde.

“The volunteers who are fully trainedspend a maximum of four hours at the homeswhere they care for the children. This meet-ing also gives the parents an opportunity totake a break as caring for a child with specialneeds is a 24-hour job.”

Van der Linde says she wanted to open thecentre after she did some work in the UK.

“I was trained in the field and I loved work-ing with children and when I came back I de-cided that our children and families alsoneed assistance in South Africa. It’s great toknow that we can make a little bit of a differ-ence in the lives of the children.”

She added that it is amazing working withthe children and becoming part of the fami-lies.

She says another goal is to train a team ofvolunteers to assist more families.

“Volunteers can be any age, but must havea passion for children. They will receive fulltraining, get their uniforms and all theequipment they will need to assist the chil-dren.”

Getting a grip on spelling and thedefinition of words is all comingtogether as two Blackheathschools gear up to take part inthis year’s Grow Smart literacycompetition.

Blackheath Primary School andDennemere Primary School are twoof the schools that will be takingpart in one of the first rounds. Theyhave selected their three learners

who will be representing theirschools to the best of their literaryability.

It would seem that the GrowSmart competition has stepped itup a notch this year as both learn-ers and educators have noticed adifference.

“The words aren’t easy butthey’re doing quite well. It’s not tooeasy to always manage the timeavailable but we make the time.They are eager and have the rightattitude,” said Gail Petersen, men-

tor to the learners of BlackheathPrimary School.

This is the first time that Pe-tersen is assisting in the competi-tion and has been keeping the learn-ers on their toes for the past threeweeks.All three learners arenow inGrade 6 and took part in the compe-tition last year.

Cassidy Butler, one of this year’scontestants, prides herself on thefact that they made it so far in thecompetition last year.

“It was difficult but we did it and

we almost made the finals whichmade me happy,” she said.

Dennemere Primary School how-ever did make it to the finals lastyear where they competed againstfive other competitive schools.

This year, the school has taken adifferent approach to choosingtheir contestants. They have takenone learner from Grade 4, 5 and 6.

Only one of these learners hastaken part in last year’s competi-tion. TygerBurger wondered ifthere was anything new that Mis-

ché van Staden would focus on thisyear as opposed to last year.

“I am looking more at the mean-ing of words where I only focusedon spelling and constructing sen-tences last year,” she said.

Misché adds confidently that shewould at least like to make it tothird place this year.

“Well, thenyou’ll have toworkre-ally hard to achieve that,” came aswift word of encouragement fromone of her mentors, ChantelPaulsen.

Celebrity and global TB ambas-sador, Gerry Elsdon has beenstridingout toraiseawarenessofTB by travelling to South Afri-ca’s nine provinces and visitingpeople in communities, prisons,clinics and taxi ranks along theway.

Elsdon says she’s determined toreach three million South Africansthrough her three-week “Hit theRoad and Kick TB Walk for Human-ity” campaign.

“This is about spreading the mes-sage that it could save your life toget tested and treated for TB.

“When I go home, I want to knowthat I have advocated like never be-fore to stop TB,” Elsdon said duringa visit to Tygerberg Children’s Hos-pital.

Elsdon, who is a TB survivor her-self, chatted to mothers and chil-dren with TB during her visit to thehospital, where Professor SimonSchaaf of Stellenbosch University’sDesmond Tutu TB centre sees up to

60 babies and children a week dur-ing consultation sessions. The cen-tre is situated on the Tygerbergcampus of the university.

“We are hoping for a turningpoint at this stage. We are in a phaseof history when we have new drugson the horizon, which for 40 yearswas not the case.

“But we still need to do far more.We also need to counsel TB patientsmore,” said Schaaf.

Elsdon said this was one of hermain aims – to highlight the needfor more counselling of TB patientsand to encourage people to get test-ed for TB and to be diligent in com-pleting their treatment. “I see peo-ple who are really sick. I want tosay: ‘If you had gone for treatmentearly in the game, it would havemade such a difference’.”

Elsdon started her countrywidetour on World TB Day – 24 March– in Johannesburg, and has sincebeen to Limpopo, Northwest, Mpu-malanga, KwaZulu-Natal, the East-ern Cape, and now the Western

Cape.Elsdon, who is also a national de-

partment of health TB ambassador,has also been closely involved inthe “Kick TB” campaign, which us-es the love of soccer to bring homethe message that TB can be treated.The campaign involves hundreds ofchildren at a time and has been rec-ognised internationally.

Throughout her countrywidetour, Elson has been handing outstickers to taxi drivers, encourag-ing them to open windows and helpto halt the spread of TB. She’s hop-ing that her awareness campaignwill go some way in helping tobreak the stigma of tuberculosis.

“Anyone can contract TB. We allneed to look after each other.”

The closing date for entries is 20April. Auditions will take place ear-ly in June in all main centres acrossSouth Africa. About 60 candidateswill eventually be selected to com-pete over four rounds at the HugoLambrechts Auditorium in Parow,Cape Town, from 24 to 28 Septem-ber.

The only condition is that candi-dates must still be 13 at the time ofthe competition.

“We also want to encourage com-munity participation, so that thecommunity can take pride and own-ership of the hospital by respectingthe staff and the facility.”

Kekkel & Kraai in Eerste River is giving tal-ented residents more than enough to squawkabout with their new talent competition.

The first leg of the eight-week competitionkicked off on Saturday with talented hopefulsfrom the Eerste River area.

Rui De Freitas, owner of Kekkel & Kraaisaid the competition will be held at the storeevery Saturday, but the finals on Saturday 2June will be held at the Eerste River Commu-nity Hall.

The competition is broken down into threedifferent categories which comprise singing,dancing and a group performance.

This is the first time that this store is havingsuch a competition in the seven months since

they relocated from the Shoprite Centre.“We would like to give back to the communi-

ty as their support has been superb and it onlygets better. At the same time we are trying topromote a healthier lifestyle,” said De Freitas.

He hopes that the competition will also keepyouth off the streets and invest their time infocusing on their talents. De Freitas said theinspiration for the competition came a weekago when a group from the area performed atthe store. He said he was taken aback by theirtalent.

Later this month De Freitas plans on hold-ing another competition where a microwaveis up for grabs.

Despite the blazing rays of the sun, sixvolunteers braved the heat for a goodcause recently when they painted theSakhumzi Centre in Mfuleni.

The centre was slowly transformed asthe wendy houses used as classroomswere painted on the inside and out. Anolder classroom which was a dull whitewas brightened with a dash of orange.Painting the classroom orange was notjust for making a loud statement as theseare the colours of the two organisationsinvolved in renovating Sakhumzi into asafe institution.

This has long been a joint project be-tween the South African Sustainable De-

velopment Initiative (Sasdi) and Multi-Spectrum Properties, who raised R80 000in their golf day last year for the centre.

The classrooms were painted white in-side with a fire retardant paint whichburns slower than usual. This will createenough time forpeople to escape the roomin case of an emergency. Toilets were alsoinstalled later in the afternoon and pipeswere laid out for the plumbing.

When asked how they felt about work-ing in the blazing sun at 30 degrees celci-us, one Sasdi intern had the following tosay: “I don’t mind painting, I would rath-er do this than sit in an office. It’s a goodcause and I think everyone who can af-ford to help should – whether it’s a dona-tion or painting,” said Courtnay Misze-wski.

Chance to help yourself and the community

Upliftment is on the cards for some com-munities in the Cape.

Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille recent-ly introduced a programme focusing on theregeneration of identified areas within theCity of Cape Town.

The objective is to uplift areas that havebeen identified as neglected and dysfunc-tional and are seen to be degenerating rapid-ly.

This programme will help to improve thesafety, quality of life and socio-economic sit-uation in these areas, with a particular fo-cus on the public spaces.

Some of the areas that have been identi-fied in our areas for the initial roll-out of theMayoral Urban Regeneration Programmeinclude Bishop Lavis, Valhalla Park, andBonteheuwel, with the Bellville TransportInterchange precinct and Voortrekker Roadcorridor also scheduled for some attention.

The selection of these areas was primarilyinformed by the need to address inequalitywhich is still a reality for many communi-ties within the city – the legacy of many gen-erations of spatial and economic exclusion.

Maintenance of public infrastructure andfacilities, in partnership with communities,is the basis of the programme with the objec-tive of stabilisingareas andprovidingaplat-form for more effective public and privateinvestment.

These future investments will be includedinto the City’s Integrated DevelopmentPlan.

It is within this context that the city is in-troducing the concept of an area-based ap-proach to urban development and manage-ment based on the successful Violence Pre-vention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU)programme.

It is the city’s intention, based on the suc-cess of this programme, to extend it to otherareas that would benefit from such inter-vention.

Area Co-ordinating Teams (ACTs) will beset up within the identified communities,under the umbrella of the relevant subcoun-cils. These teams will provide a platform forrepresentatives of the communities, busi-nesses, non-governmental organisationsand the city to engage on a regular basis onissues such as maintenance, cleansing, in-formal trader management and perform-ance monitoring

The City Manager has appointed conve-nors for the establishment of the ACTs andtheir first meetings will be held before theend of April. The ACTs will report regularlyto a subcommittee chaired by the mayoralcommittee member for community servi-ces, Councillor Tandeka Gqada.

Vital to enforcewater by­lawsWhat’s the use of a by-law if it’s not en-forced? If there are too few“enforcers” andtoo many offenders?

With water being such a scarce re-source, the city has decided it has no op-tion but to appoint 18 additional peace of-ficers to enforce its by-laws relating to wa-ter.

These peace officers have the authorityto issue on-the-spot fines to offenders whocontravene the by-laws related to water;wastewater and industrial effluent; treat-ed effluent; and stormwater management.

It comes as no surprise that most of thefines that have been issued during Marchrelated to industries that discharged ille-gal substances into the stormwater sys-tem. Somehow they think they can getaway with it. Because of ignorance, theysometimes still do.

In this time 60 spot fines amounting toR60 000 were issued to offenders who con-travened the stormwater management by-law. The culprits were also ordered to takeremedial action within a stipulated time-frame or face further consequences.

Hitting them hard where it hurts most.In their pockets. That’s the only languagethey understand.

Kudos to the city for taking the bull bythe horns. Let’s hope the city also looks af-ter the peace officers so they don’t losesteam while taking on the big boys.

Graag maak ek gebruik van die geleentheidom die organiseerders van die afgelope Paas-naweek se onder 19-toernooi in die BayhillPremier Cup geluk te wens met ‘n uitmun-tende taak.

Ek wil veral die Stad Kaapstad se amptena-re uitsonder vir hul rol wat hulle gespeel hetom hierdie gebeurtenis ‘n reuse-sukses temaak. Ek dink regtig julle kan uitgesonderword omdat julle ‘n groot rol gespeel het.

Bo en behalwe dat die stad ander rolle ge-speel het tot die sukses van dié toernooi, hetdie gerief te Ericapark in Belhar, ook gewys

dat ons enige byeenkoms op enige dag kanaanbied. Die toilette was skoon en netjies,die vergaderpersele en kleedkamers was per-fek.

Having recently lost everything –and I mean everything – I now findmyself in the position of having tobeg when I can’t find casual work.

I spend the morning until 13:00looking for work and if unsuccesfulam left with three options.

The first is to tell my wife that sheand I must go hungry and sleepoutside.

The second is to go out and stealsomething or from someone.

The third is to swallow my prideand ask my fellow man for ‘help’.

I rule out option one, as I don’tthink my wife deserves it and alsobecause I hate the look in her eyes’when I tell her.

I rule out option as it goes againstwhat I believe and how I was raised.My God also doesn’t approve.

I am thus left with option three.I therefore take out my pride andproceed to swallow it.

I prepare myself mentally for thesuccesion of no’s to come. Steel my-self mentally for when I am swornat, ridiculed, ignored, chased awayand looked upon with disgust.

I pray to God and ask that he sendsome “kind souls” across my path,willing to help, so that I am able toprovide us with food and shelter forthe night.

As long as I do my part, keep myfaith and obey my Lord – my Lordanswers my prayers.

So, please.When next a “beggar” approa-

ches – before you swear at, ignoreor judge them, ask yourself – wouldI rather have this person stealingthan reaching out?

Remember that we are also peo-ple and deserve the same respect asanyone. By no means am I sayinghelp everyone.

Worried about your final resting place?You should be, because the City of CapeTown’s older cemeteries are reachingfull capacity.

This poses a challenge to City Parks, thedepartment under which cemeteries fall. In-stead of just developing more cemeteries,they have seen it as an opportunity to makeavailable additional burial and internmentoptions in order to increase density of buri-als, whilst still striving to respect culturaland religious diversity.

The Maitland cemetery is Cape Town’slargest cemetery (113 hectares) and willhave exhausted its vacant graves’ spacewithin three years.

There are areas within this cemetery thatcannot be used for in-ground burial due tothe presence of a high water table. This landwas therefore earmarked for buildingabove-ground concrete crypts in the form ofa mausoleum, as an alternative internmentoption to the public.

A pilot phase of 144 mausoleum cryptswere built in 2011 and after 15 months of en-vironmental monitoring, these crypts arenow officially on offer to the public. Bookingenquiries can be made at the northern ceme-tery booking office, on 021 550 7639.

During the last five years City Parks hasalso extended Khayelitsha, Grassy Park andWelmoed cemeteries, as well as developednew cemeteries in Wallacedene and Delft.

These cemeteries have been designedwith two types of private graves, namely fullmonumental and berm grave blocks.

In order to densify burial layouts, theberm grave layout was introduced withoutpathways between the graves. The memori-al work on berm graves is limited to head-stones only and no monumental work is al-lowed on the surface of the grave.

The surface is levelled and grassed to pro-vide access for visitors. Berm graves are of-fered at 40 percent of the price of a full monu-mental grave, which provides a significantcost incentive, whilst the city saves spacefor future burial demands.

Both berm and full monumental graves of-fer “exclusive right of burial” and thesegraves give the family the option to re-usethe grave for second burials (on top) of an-other family coffin.

Second burials or burials on top of anoth-er family member, causes no disturbance ofthe first buried coffin in any way. This prac-tice is therefore being encouraged, so as toprovide for more space in existing cemeter-ies for the future.

New cemeteries are also being planned inVaalfontein (Somerset West) and MetroSouth East (Mfuleni) to cater for future de-mand for burials.

The Sports Science Institute of SouthAfrica (Ssisa) and Optifit will be hos-ting a running programme for thoseinterested in running events like theTwo Oceans marathon.

The programme runs for 12 weeksfor those wishing to be able to run10km and a further eight weeks forthose wishing to be able to run 21km.

There are various packages on offeras well as health assessments.

A new music project wants tobring melodies back into thecommunity in a big way.

The Where We Live jazz projecthas its roots in the formation of theBishop Lavis Jazz Society manyyears ago and it is now spreading

across the Western Cape as it un-covers the talent that exists in com-munities, and reveals the next gen-eration of talents coming upthrough the ranks.

Fernando Van Wyk explainedthat their experience with music intheir youth taught them valuablelife lessons that empowered them intheir lives.

“We grew up in anenvironment wheremusic was a vibrantpart of our communi-ty,” he said.

“The harmonies ofthe choirs, churchbrigades, Christmasbands, and even theklopse played a vitalrole in maintainingthe harmony in ourneighbourhoods inthose days.

“There was also alot of jazz bands thatcame from our areas,and there were ven-ues that featuredthem all the time.Apart from the livemusic there were

groups of friends that loved listen-ing to the overseas influences so wewould visit each other with LPs andspend afternoons listening and hav-ing great discussions.

“The friendships that wereformed then, are still going strong,and this harmony and togethernessis what we want to bring back toneighbourhoods through thisproject.”

Guitarist Derek Schippers is alsovery excited about the project andfeels that it will benefit the talentthat exists in the communities.

“I come fromabackgroundwheremusic has empowered me to travelthe world, but I feel that the timehas come to make a difference in myhome town, where I live,” he chuck-led.

“Over the years our we have hadsome great talents coming fromCape Town, but too many of themhave to ply their trade overseas, orhead north to Johannesburg.

“The problem is that there hasbeen too little support for ourunique sound that we can producewith what can be termed the ‘Cape’jazz sound.

“Growing up in this part of the

world we were inspired by legendslike Robbie Jansen, Tony Schilder,Basil Coetzee, the Dyers brothers,The Four Sounds ... but you rarelyhear this at venues, or on the radio.

“Part of this project is bringingthat soundback into ourneighbour-hoods by playing concerts at hous-es, halls, and even in playparks tobring the sound to the people.”

Another important aspect of theproject is re-discovering the talentsthat are still there in the neighbour-hoods.

“The time has come for people todiscover the music from Where WeLive,” he concluded.

The man is back after a lengthy two-year break and makes his return onSaturday at the Western ProvinceKyokushin-kan Open karate cham-pionship at the UCT sports centre.

Siyanbonga Tyandela, who repre-sented the Rest of the World versusRussia three years ago, makes hismuch-anticipated return.

Tyandela, who is a former seven-time national champion, will enterin the men’s heavyweight divisionand is punted to make it to the finalwhere he might meet Pierre Appel-gryn.

Appelgryn, who tips the scale at110kg at the young age of 23, has hissights sets on the final.

“It is great to have Siyabongaback, his track record speaks for it-self and I’m sure we will have himin the final. Pierre, who will com-pete in only his second full contacttournament, is a promising pros-pect for the future.

“We are looking forward to whatmayverywell be thebest provincialchamps we have had in years.

“We expect more than 250 entrieson the day and for the first time wehave other Kyokushin organisa-tions entering our championships,”said Shihan Hennie Bosman.

Former champion Sydney Vere-mu (u.80kg) will look to once againwalk away with the honours.

Monique Theore (Kyokushin Un-ion) who will compete in the girls’u-17 division looks set to win.

The tournament starts at 09:00with the men’s elimination roundsestimated to start at 14:00.

Durbanville/Bellville (in dieA-afdeling) en Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege, Bellville (voor-

heen Bellville Tech) en Brackenfell(al drie in die B-afdeling) was dieenigste van die nege Tygerbergseklubs in die WP se topliga wat in dieeerste reeks wedstryde aan die wen-kant kon eindig.

Tygerberg-klub is baie gou deurdie Universiteit Kaapstad daarvanbewus gemaak dat die A-afdeling ’nveel moeiliker wêreld is as die B-af-deling waarin hy verlede seisoenkoning gekraai het. Maar alle eeraan die Floridapark-span – wat met

Diewedstrydwat om15:30 afskop,is deel van ’n rugbytoernooi watvan 26-28 April ten bate van die Ma-sibambane-sportprojek gespeelword.

“Die Masibambane Sport Foun-dation (MSF) het die afgelope tweejaar soveel sukses behaal dat ons as

rugbyspelers graag hul goeie werkwil ondersteun,” sê Carel Steen-kamp CA(SA), voorsitter van dieDurbell-rugbyklub. Heelwat skolein die omgewing het nie genoegfondse om leerlinge bloot te stel aansportsoorte soos rugby nie.

MSF gebruik sport as ’n mediumom die jeug van die Durbanville-ge-meenskap te bereik. Nie net kryjong spelers die geleentheid om pro-fessionele sportafrigting te ontvangdeur voormalige provinsiale spe-lers nie, maar word hulle ook aan-

gemoedig om noodsaaklike lewens-vaardighede te ontwikkel binnehierdie veilige omgewing. Die in-vloed van MSF is veel groter as dieontwikkeling van sportvaardighe-de. Een van die spelers, ’n hoër-skool-seun, het onlangs aan ’n afrig-ter erken dat hy betrokke was bydwelmmisbruik en dat MSF aanhom ’n geleentheid gee om te ont-snap van die euwels binne sy ge-meenskap.

Daar is ook ’n 5-jarige seun watby elke oefening opgedaag het met

die verskoning dat hy graag wilhelp. Volgens die ander spelersword beide sy ouers vermis. MSFgee aan hierdie 5-jarige ’n veiligeplek waar hy deel vorm van ’n groepmense wat sy lewe positief beïn-vloed. Hierdie seun tree tans op asspanbestuurder vir een van dieMSF-spanne. MSF het dringendfondse nodig om etes te verskaf aanspelers wat dikwels by oefeninge enwedstryde opdaag sonder enigietsom te eet of drink.
