The plan for the erection of the
Wall of Remembrance for the
victims of the Buttskop Railway
Crossing accident, has been giv-
en the green light by the South
African National Roads Agency
(Sanral).
The wall will pay tribute to the
young victims who lost their lives
in one of themost tragic railway ac-
cidents.
The application to Sanral was
submitted in June this year as the
site identified for the construction
of the wall is land belonging to San-
ral.
The site identified for the project
is the areabetween the existingFre-
derick Street and the road reserve
for the downgraded N7.
More than two years after the ac-
cident on 25August 2010, Sanral has
made no objection to the proposal
for the walls construction. This
was made known at the Subcouncil
21 meeting last week onWednesday
22 August. The construction of the
wall is a project initiated by Sub-
council 21.
Steven Vuba, Subcouncil 21
chairperson said: The subcouncil
took a decision regarding the Wall
of Remembrance of those victims
that theremust be something as the
council that we can do. We really
try our best to redress and put for-
ward the pillar that showcases that
we are a caring city, irrespective
what took place.
In a letter of response, issued by
the national roads agency, made
public during the subcouncil meet-
ing, Sanral communicates the fol-
lowing: The SouthAfricanNation-
al RoadsAgency SOC limited has in
principle no objection to your re-
quest. Upon receipt of a legible plan
of the parking area, access point
and the proposed wall, Sanrals
service provider,MANCO-Aurecon
JV will further deal with the mat-
ter.
Sanral further requires that rec-
ognition be given on the wall that
the land for the memorial site was
donated by them.

subcouncil to engage with all the roleplay-
ers. I am going to engage all my councillors
within my subcouncil and that meeting will
be with the parents and then from that meet-
ing we will all be in a position of knowing
how the next phase will unfold.
Vuba is positive about the way forward.
The wall will stand in memory of the 10
schoolchildren from Eerste River, who lost
their lives in the horrific railway accident,
which made international headlines, when
their taxi, transporting them to schools, col-
lidedwith an oncoming train at theButtskop
Railway Crossing in Blackheath.
That fatefulmorning of the crash, learners
Reece Smith (seven), Michaelin de Koker
(11), Nolan Februarie (13), Jade Adams (10),
Jody Phillips (13), Nadine Martinisen (13),
Cody Erasmus (16), Jean-Pierre Willeman
(13), Lisle Augis (11) and Jason Pedro (14),
tragically lost their lives.
Jacob Humphreys, the taxi driver, is cur-
rently serving a jail sentence of 20 years for
these childrens murders.
Wall remembers kids killed
If you find yourself caught up or busy
with criminal activity, especially drug-
related crimes, chances are the long arm
of the law will reach you and you could
end up behind bars.
This is evident in the number of suspects
arrested by police forming part of the Kuils
River policing cluster, including Mfuleni,
Kuils River and Kleinvlei police stations.
Information supplied by Capt Nomathem-
ba Muavha, communications officer for the
Mfuleni police, reveals that more than 200
suspects were arrested by the police of the
Kuils River cluster.
Muavha says: In another successful
crime prevention operation in conjunction
with other law enforcement agencies last
week (13 August until 19 August 2012), the
Kuils River policing cluster achieved a total
of 242 arrests.
Themajority of the suspects were arrested
for drug possession. Two suspects were ar-
rested for robbery, one for murder, two for
attemptedmurder, one for rape, one for child
neglect, one for possession of an illegal fire-
arm, 12 for housebreaking and theft, 10 for
house robbery, 23 for common assault, 11 for
domestic violence, 20 for assualt (Grievous
BodyHarm), 11 for drunkdriving, 23 for theft
and 15 for outstanding warrants of arrest.
Other suspects were arrested for crimes
like common robbery, possession of a stolen
motor vehicle, use of motor vehicle without
permission, shoplifting, possession of stolen
goods, fraud, crimen injuria, contravening a
court order, trespassing, dealing in liquor
andmalicious damage to property,Muavha
said.
The suspects arrested for this week, from
20 August until 27 August, Muavha says to-
talled 325.
The majority was once again for drug pos-
sesion, with a total of 99 suspects arrested on
drug charges.
Police officials from the three police sta-
tions recovered items including; 376 g tik,
2 421 kg dagga, 23 Mandrax tablets, one lap-
top, one Ford Bantam bakkie, one Mazda
pick-up bakkie and a Toyota Corolla, one pis-
tol and magazine, one firearm and ammuni-
tion as well as two truck batteries.
Kuils River cluster commander, Briga-
dier Vincent Beation would like to take this
opportunity and convey his appreciation to
the station commanders of his cluster, Col
Joan Stroebel (Kleinvlei), Col Luyanda Da-
moyi (Mfuleni) and Col Dyson Jacobs (Kuils
River) for the sterling work they are doing,
Muavha added.

Last week the Mfuleni police arrested
two Somali nationals in possession of an
illegal firearm with five ammunition
rounds, in the early hours of Wednesday
morning.
Capt Nomathemba Muavha, communica-
tions officer of theMfuleni police says: The
arrests follows after police members re-
ceived information of an illegal firearm be-
ing hidden at a shop in extension 6 inMfule-
ni.
The police officials searched the premises,
and found an unknown firearm, the serial
number was filed off.
Mfuleni police members then arrested the
two suspects and they were charged for pos-
session of an illegal firearm and possession
of ammunition.
Muavha says the two suspects aged 24 and
36 appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrates
Court last week Wednesday.
In another incident last week, six men
robbed a spaza shop in Ngquobe Street, Ex-
tension 3 in Mfuleni.
It is alleged that the 20-year-old male vic-
tim was busy serving customers when six
unknown males entered the shop, pretend-
ing to be customers.
When the victim returned with a packet
of chips which they ordered, two of the sus-
pects threatened him with firearms.
All the suspects entered behind the coun-
ter and robbed him of a substantial amount
of cash, airtime vouchers worth R1 800 and
two cigarette cartons worth about R500.
The suspects fled the scene on foot.
No shots were fired and nobody was in-
jured during the robbery.

The community of Eerste River is invited to
attend a public meeting, focusing on hou-
sing. The public meeting will take place at
the Multi-purpose Centre in Bobsway, Eer-
ste River today.
Community members must note that the
meeting will start at 18:00.

can tradition by planting trees
during National Arbour Week,
taking place from Saturday 1
September to Friday 7 Septem-
ber.
Accredited garden centres
around the country are committed
to stocking a wide selection of
healthy, indigenous and environ-
mentally-friendly trees.
Trees can grow virtually every-
where without necessarily needing
a patch of grass.
Many species of trees are
equipped to grow in a container and
the ancient art of Bonsai makes it
possible to accommodate a tree in
even the tiniest of apartments.
The Water berry (Waterbessie)
was named the 2012 Tree of the Year
and bears fragrant flowers and red-

The Community Women Action Centre
in Eerste River held a conference aimed
at educating and creating awareness in
the community as women.
The conference, held on 24 and 25 August,
paid tribute to women from all walks of life
acknowledging the small, but powerful im-
pact they have in the community.
The womens singing, which echoed
through the walls of the venue seemed to be
amethod of praise, which give thempassion
for the upliftment of women.
The joy in the use of their voices, is a glim-
mer of hope forwomen to stand up, walk tall
and open doors to create opportunities.
Various guest speakers encouraged the
women to learn to find lessons in their mis-
takes and to be pioneers in creating a name
for themselves.
Western Cape Minister of Social Develop-
ment, Albert Fritz graced the conference
with his presence adding that projects for
young people will be taken further and that
the focus will be on what happens after-
wards. Fritz suggested moving away from
typical soup kitchens and getting the gov-
ernment involved in providing easy access
to food ticketing systems entitling the pub-
lic to a warm meal every day.

Leon Hartshorne (58), die hoof van die
Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum in
Parow, onthou word deur almal wat
hom geken het.
Die dood van Leon verlede Dinsdag nadat
hy gediagnoseer is met longkanker, was n
groot verlies vir sy vrou, Janette, sy gesin,
n vir klassieke musiekliefhebbers in Suid-
Afrika en selfs in die buiteland.
Honderde studente het in sy tyd deur die
musieksentrum se deure beweeg. Baie van
hulle het intussen nasionale en selfs inter-
nasionale aansien verwerf.
Mense uit alle vlakke van die lewe het gis-
ter (Dinsdag) by die NG kerk Kenridge by-
een gekom om hulde aan hom te bring.
Sy gesin en vriende het ook n gedenkte-
ken aangebring om sy lewe te vier.
nGroepvanagtharpspelershet nuitvoe-
ring ter ere van Leon by die begrafnis gele-
wer.
Leon was n dromer en het altyd alles
probeer om sy drome waar te maak, vertel
Janette. Hulle was amper 30 jaar getroud en
sy s dit was die beste tyd van haar lewe.
Hy was altyd vol verrassings. Op Valen-
tynsdag het twee vliegtuigkaartjies na Pa-
rys vir my by die huis gewag. Dit is net hoe
hy was.
Vir sy twee kinders was hy n verskrikli-
ke liefdevolle pappa, altyd trots op hulle en
wou vir hulle die beste gee.
Sy dink met heimwee aan al die herinne-
ringe. Hy het altyd die lekkerste kos ge-
maak en was die beste geselskap. Hy was
ook lief vir lees. Ons het altyd gegrap dat hy
n regte huishoender was. Hy was verskrik-
lik lief vir kuns, musiek en om in sy tuin
te werk dit was terapeuties vir hom.
Sy s: Onsmis hom.Hyhet altyd n vuur-
tjie aangesteek en die hele gesin het lekker
saamgekuier, maar ons weet hy is in n plek
waar ons almal eendag sal wees. Dit is hoe-
kom ons sy lewe wil vier.
Die Hugo Lambrechts-musieksentrum
het n studieleier met buitengewone eien-
skappe verloor. Afgesien van sy pligte as
skoolhoof en administrateur in beplanning
en personeelontwikkeling, het hy ook oplei-
ding gegee in klarinet, orkes- en ensemble.
Hy is gerespekteer as eksaminator oor die
hele land en vir verskeie baanbreker-pro-
jekte, soos die jaarlikse Hugo Lambrechts-
konsertfees en die SAMRO-Hubert van der
Spuy se nasionale musiekkompetisie.
Hilda Boonzaaier, n musiekonderwyser
en baie goeie vriend van Leon, s hy het n
groot nalatenskap agtergelaat. Hywasbaie
goed vir musiek in die algemeen. Hy het
deure oopgemaak vir baie mense en studen-
te.

Dignitaries and guests alike enjoyed a
spectacular and lavish function at Afri-
can Pride Crystal Towers in Century
City on Saturday all in recognition of
the wonderful work being done by Iris
House.
The Welgelegen non-profit organisation
cares for life limited or life threatened spe-
cial needs children and also supports their
families.
It was certainly no surprise to see the
crme de la crme arrive in stunning attire
during the masked ball.
Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille,
was one of the many guests to don a mask
during the luxurious evening.
So many people are going beyond any-
thing which is considered an appropriate
sacrifice or contribution to be the people
they value, but more importantly to enable
other people to live the lives theyvalue. That
is why were here tonight, said Zille in a
particularly stirring speech.
It makes a difference when you know
from your heart what it means to parents
of childrenwith disabilities to have the sup-
port, compassion and solidarity of people
who do not judge, but listen and offer help
when needed.
She went on to say that the tragedy isnt
those people who Iris House supports, but
rather the many hundreds the organisation
are not yet able to support. Funds are need-
ed to expand the reach of the organisation,
so functions like these have far-reaching ef-
fects.
Iris Houses Sue van der Linde says it was
an evening to remember. The significant
awareness factor is fantastic. Having the
premier there was just the cherry on top!
