Pensioners are still fuming after thepayout chaos in the area last week.

The South African Social Security Agen-cy (Sassa) seems to be blaming pensioners, parents and caregivers for the recent may-hem in the pay-out of social grants.

Both the minister of social developmentBathabile Dlamini and Sassa CEO VirginiaPetersen have repeatedly given assurancesthat the re-registration of beneficiaries ne-cessitated by the changeover to the CashPaymaster System would not disrupt grantpayments.

Sassa now admits that “several systemglitches” delayed the payment of grantssince 2 April.

In the Elsies River and Ravensmead are-as, community worker Ricardo Speelmanwent around to some of the pay points towitness some of the chaos that the pension-ers were experiencing.

He reported that he was horrified at whathe witnessed.

“How could anybody treat our seniorslike this,” he said.

“Everybody was very angry because theregistration for the new payment systemonly started on Monday 2 April when peo-ple started arriving at payout points.

“Some of the people even ended up sleep-ing outside these centres in an effort to behelped early on the Tuesday, but they stillhad to wait long to be helped.

“Why did they not start the process be-fore the pay day,” he asked.

Speelman pointed out that these long de-lays for the seniors caused health problemsfor them while they were waiting to behelped.

“These pensioners had to stand outsideall the time, and you can imagine the prob-lems that was caused for them where theirhealth was concerned.

“Some of them ended up going to thenearest day hospital or clinic, seven ofthem had to be taken away by ambulance, and even there they had to wait to behelped, as they lost their place in the pen-sion line,” he said.

The People Living With Cancer (PLWC) Can-cer Buddies organisation has been ear-marked as one of the beneficiaries in the spec-tacular Want ons Kan/’Cause we Can! 2012concert.

PLWC Cancer Buddies was established in2000 by Linda Greeff and Carl Liebenberg, both of whom are cancer survivors.

The organisation develops volunteer coun-selling guidelines and support that helps peo-ple who have been diagnosed with cancer.

“After a person has been diagnosed withcancer, that is when he or she needs all thesupport they can get,” says Greef.

“The aim is to provide support to newly di-agnosed cancer patients when treatmentstarts, to assist with the initial adjustment tothe process. This service ensures that a can-

cer patient and their caregivers have accessto support services near their treatmentunits. We need them to be cancer survivorsand not cancer victims.”

The organisation offers a buddy supportnetwork where cancer patients can interactwith and receive advice and support fromcancer survivors who have a similar profile, disease and treatment protocol.

She says the importance of support whilelearning to live with cancer is fundamentalto developing a true cancer survivor ap-proach. “Dealing with each chapter of surviv-al involves more than medical management– it requires attention to your psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, working andpractical needs as well.

“Developing a patient active approachwhich empowers the patient to take some con-trol over the process and which encourages

them to see healing as more that just physical,is an important outcome the cancer buddiestries to achieve.”

Greef says talking with someone who hassurvived cancer and has regained their life of-fers hope and a sense of empowerment.

“Through empowerment comes a positiveattitude, which has a profound effect on theoutcome of the treatment.”

PLWC has branches in the Western Cape,Eastern Cape, Gauteng and in Mpumalanga.

Currently they are trying to set up supportgroups in all the smaller communities suchas Delft and Bishop Lavis.

Greef says funding is a challenge.“We are in need of funding and that’s why

we are so grateful to be a beneficiary of the’Cause we Can! concert.”

Anyone who would like to assist or join theorganisation can call 021 949 4060.

came under fire and Speelman saidmany of the pensioners complainedabout the rudeness that they suffered.

“Our seniors in the communitymust be treated with respect at alltimes, and when it comes to situationslike this somebody must be responsi-ble for these people to wait and behelped in comfort.

“If you know there are going to belong delays you must ensure thatthere is at least water for the people, even some food available for them. It’sthe least that you can do in such situa-tions.”

In a full-page advertisement in theBusiness Report on Sunday, Sassablames these “glitches” on beneficiar-ies who “panicked” and put “pressureon the system”.

“This blame-shifting is unaccepta-ble,” said Mike Waters, DA shadowminister of social development in astatement last week.

“The grants system is a nationalcompetency managed by Sassa, whichfalls under the department of socialdevelopment. Sassa and the depart-ment therefore have joint responsibil-ity to ensure that grants are paid outtimeously during the re-registrationprocess.

“For many South Africans, socialgrants are their main livelihood. It isimperative that mechanisms are putin place to ensure a smooth transitionto the new pay-out system,” Waterssaid.

The long road to completion is slowlydrawing to a close for the créche of MamaAmelia in the heart of the township ofMfuleni.

Last week the Sakhumzi Centre, whichlooks after about 80 children received a newwendy house. This is no ordinary wendyhouse as it complies with safety regulationsby the fire department to be used as a class-room.

This in turn, will allow the créche to applyfor a temporary licence to be registered untilthey get a permanent one.

Kissmea Adams, resource and develop-ment manager for the South African Sustai-nable Development Initiative (Sasdi) aims tohave most of the créche completed by thisweek. By next week they plan on getting adecent working kitchen and toilets, whichwould require a plumber on sight to install

such. Adams aims to have the SakhumziCentre ready by the end of April.

Safety precautions will be taken to makesure that the new classroom will be fit forchildren to learn in, out of harm’s way. Thenew wendy house is painted with fire retar-dent paint, which prevents the wendy housefrom burning at a fast rate. The roof will alsobe painted with an insulation paint whichkeeps the wendy house warm in winter andcool in summer.Thepaint, sponsoredbyEcoPaint is non toxic, making it eco friendly.

At the end of the month, Sasdi hopes to in-vite the City of Cape Town to its grand ope-ning.

The buck does not stop there, as Ali Cor-bit, a trustee of Sasdi plans to launch a bookby June, which explains Sakhumzi’s trans-formation. It will serve as a guideline forother organisations and companies whowish to do the same. The book will come outwith illustrations and before and after pho-tographs.

The Kingdom Come Community DanceSchool set the stage ablaze with their ta-lent over Easter weekend, despite the coldweather.

The annual Easter production took placein the Bellville Civic Theatre on Saturdaynight. Audience members were spellboundwith an opening act of red, orange and whi-te as dancers dashed through the crowd andonto the stage. More than 80 dancers filled

the theatre from 18 different denominations. The message of Easter reached the audience

with creative choreographed dance moves thathad the crowd wanting more.

“The difference between this year and theother years is that the students ministeredthrough a Biblical understanding. They dan-ced to touch the lives of those in the hall, theyreally wanted to connect. One could sense theyhad an understanding as to what it is to minis-ter and not just dance,” said Neil Oortman, whoruns the Kingdom Come Community DanceSchool.

The evening also gave a platform to two dan-cers who showcased their assignments to audi-ence members. This included choreographyingtheir own dance moves and a two page theoreti-

cal essay as to the moves they will use andwhy, and choosing their own costume and co-lour scheme. Even though the show mainlyfocused on dancing, there were two singerswho performed, one of whom was Ivan Siege-laar.

The two and a half hour concert was endedwith a unique blessing from the dance group.Dancers engaged with the crowd by filling upthe aisles to the stage and danced as audiencemembers got to their feet and clapped.

The Kingdom Come Community DanceSchool will be having a four day dance confe-rence in September where dancers from theUSA will attend. Anybody interested in atten-dingorwould like to join thedance school cancontact Neil Oortman on 084 8639580.

DANKIE KAAPSTAD! VYFJAARPLAN (GOP) - 2012/2013 - 2016/2017Kaapstad vra weer jou kommentaar

LIAM MOSES

FOR older members of CapeTown’s soccer fraternity thename Battswood Football Clubbrings back memories of the glo-ry days of the ’80s when the teamwas one of the best in Cape Town.

The side is still fondly remem-bered for their exploits on the soc-cer field, the trophies they won andfor producing some of the most tal-ented footballers to come from thecity.

Unfortunately, the success didnot last too long into the profession-al era of local football and in recenttimes Battswood teams have failedto emulate the successes of theirpredecessors. Despite this, the clubseems to have made a lasting im-pact on some of its finest productsand success could soon return toBattswood.

Adeed Abrahams, who was theteam’s first-choice goalkeeper dur-ing their halcyon days of the ’80s, isone of many players who havepassed through the doors of this fa-mous club.

Apart from the success heachieved with the team, Abrahamsalso won several individual awards– including Western Province Foot-ball Board Player of the Year in 1982and 1986, South African Council onSport (Sacos) Sportsman of the Yearin 1986, and the South African Soc-cer Federation Professional Foot-baller of the Year award in 1986.

Abrahams believes that the val-ues he learned at the club is whathelped him to achieve this and hehas now returned to Battswood,

along with a group of other formerstars, in an attempt to help restorethe club to its former glory.

“We thought that when we movedon, the younger generation wouldcome through, like we did when weplayed and we took over and westarted becoming the chairman andthe treasurer,” says Abrahams.

“But nobody came through to theextent that there was progression.

So we decided that we are going tocome back and try and revive or putback into the club and get to a pointwhere at least there is going to besome structure when you get to acoaching session.”

Other Battswood legends who areback at the club are Trevor Ros-souw – who was the team’s coachduring the ’80s – Ian Southgate andVincent Barnes, the former Proteas

assistant coach. The group havebeen back at the club for just overtwo months and have been workingon improving the coaching struc-tures at junior levels. Although thegroup hopes that Battswood willonce again play alongside the bestclubs in South Africa, Abrahamssaid that the immediate goal is tomake the club attractive to youngplayers.

“I think that’s the overall picture. We need to start here with the kids.We need to make Battswood an at-traction to make children want tocome and play for the club.

“Because we can’t compete withAjax and Santos because of their in-frastructure, we have to make dowith what we have. We are pre-pared to do that because we havedone it before.”
