Regional Occupational Program
What is ROP? Today all students must be educated at high levels so they are prepared for both a skilled job and advanced post-secondary training. It is no longer a matter of "either/or." The Los Angeles County Office of Education and the Regional Occupational Program (ROP) strive to provide a star-quality program in career awareness, exploration, and preparation. These programs maintain high academic standards while exposing students to the potential opportunities in the adult world of work. Participation in ROP will enhance student’s career opportunities. ROP training provides students with self-satisfaction and a sense of pride as well as entry-level job skills to obtain,
maintain, and advance in their chosen career area.

ROP was established in July of 1974 by the Los Angeles
County Board of Education and the Los Angeles County
Office of Education and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and
Colleges (WASC).

Description of Courses:
Work Experience (CC/CVE)
Business Information Technology
This one-semester course is designed to prepare students for entry-level jobs utilizing the PC.
Students will increase their knowledge of computer concepts and receive hands-on training in
word processing, data entry, spreadsheet, database management, and integrated applications.
Students also gain experience utilizing software to design and produce quality images,
documents, and presentations.
ROP classes are designed to provide academic studies and hands-on training in entry-level job skills. The classes may be conducted either as classroom-only, community classroom, or cooperative vocational education courses. • Classroom-Only - Instruction takes
place in a classroom setting with hands-on skills training using industry standard equipment.
• Community Classroom Setting - Community classroom is a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training at business and public agency sites or in the classroom.
• Cooperative Vocational Education- CVE is a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training at business and public agency sites. Students participating in CVE classes must attend related classroom instruction a minimum of 2.5 hours per week throughout the course.
Administrative Assistant CC
This course is designed to train for entry-level
positions in the business/clerical area. Training is
available.
Automotive Technology (In Partnership w/ Rio Hondo
College)
This course trains students for entry-level positions
in the automotive technician field. The student will
receive core instruction in automotive basics then
select a specialty: such as: air-conditioning service
repair technician, alignment technician, brake
technician, electrical diagnostician, engine
emission technician, fuel systems technician, lube,
oil, filter, cooling system service technician,
transmission technician.
Building Construction
This course will prepare students for entry-level
jobs in building remodeling. Hands-on training
will include painting, cabinet-work, suspended
ceiling, millwork, door hanging and lock
installation, cement work, roofing, plastering, and
papering. Students will acquire knowledge in the
use, care, and upkeep of equipment and supplies.
Safety practices as related to building remodeling
will also be covered.

The Los Angeles County Regional
Occupational Program (LACOROP) is
committed to honoring outstanding ROP
students. Students are nominated by their
ROP teacher and selected by their district
to advance to the county level competition.
The student recognition program is
designed to recognize ROP students that
demonstrate exemplary efforts in the
program.

Certified Nursing Assistant CC
The Nurse Assistant Pre-certification Program
consists of courses designed to train for entry-
level positions in the nursing field or assist
with the desire to further education in the
nursing field. Course includes both classroom
and un-paid clinical experience at a
community-based site.
Computer Aided Drafting
This course enables students to examine a
broad selection of occupational choices. The
course covers drafting and architectural skills
including: sketching, tool usage, measuring,
orthographic projection, assembly and detail
drawing, floor plans and interior design.
Students also have the opportunity to increase
their skills through the use of computer-aided
design software.
Crime Scene Occupations: Intro to Forensics
This course provides hands-on experience in
the skills and knowledge required of a forensic
crime scene investigator working in law
enforcement. Students are introduced to crime
scene photography and diagrams, collecting
physical evidence, dusting and lifting
fingerprints, processing evidence, and the use
of forensic light source technology.
Criminal Law
This course is designed to prepare students for
entry-level jobs in the law enforcement field.
Students will receive an introduction to law
enforcement, public safety dispatcher, records
clerk, police cadet, and security guard.
Career Lunch & Learn Career lunch and learns provide students with an
opportunity to learn about a variety of career
opportunities from professionals in the field. Job
insights, including but not limited to,
education/training, salary, benefits, and typical
job responsibilities are discussed in every
presentation.
Film & Video CC/CVE
The course exposes students to the basics of visual storytelling through the creation of
storyboards, script writing, basic shot types, camera movements, lighting, audio and
techniques of editing. Students will learn historical perspectives and analyze American film
and television from a variety of artistic works
Fitness Occupations
This course trains students for entry-level positions in the fitness industry. This course
includes classroom instruction as well as skill development in aerobic and other exercises
necessary to become a fitness instructor or personal trainer. CPR certification offered.
Floristry CC/CVE
This course prepares students for entry-level jobs in the floral industry. Students will learn
the principles of floral design, uses of floral materials and tools, how to prepare simple
floral arrangements and decorative items, basic sales techniques, customer relations, and
basic business practices. Training will include hands-on experience in a flower shop
setting. Students will train for two job titles: florist assistant, florist technician.
Law Enforcement Field Operations
This course is designed to prepare students for entry-level jobs in the law enforcement field.
Students will receive an introduction to law enforcement, public safety dispatcher, records
clerk, police cadet, and security guard.
UC Media Design & Development
This two-semester UC approved course is designed to prepare students for entry-level jobs
utilizing the PC. Students will increase their knowledge of computer concepts and receive
hands-on training in word processing, data entry, spreadsheet, database management, and
integrated applications.

Educational Field Trips The Regional Occupational Program recognizes that educational field trips are important components of the instructional program. Providing learning experiences in an environment outside of the classroom can stimulate new interests among students and supplement and enrich classroom lessons.
Medical Assistant: Back Office CC
The Medical Assistant is an 1100-hour course that prepares students with the secretarial,
clerical, and reception skills needed to work in the medical front office. The Clinical module
prepares the student to assist in the treatment and examination of the patient, including the
administration of medications, first aid, sterilization techniques, equipment care, performing
laboratory tests, and EKGs. The course includes both classroom instruction and clinical
training in doctors’ offices and clinics.
Medical Billing & Coding CC
Students will learn medical billing and coding core topics including medical terminology, basic
human anatomy and physiology, safety, work ethics, procedural diagnostic coding, universal
claim forms, problem solving, manual and computerized medical billing and coding
bookkeeping, payroll, computerized appointments and office administration.
Office Occupations CC/CVE
This course is designed to train for entry-level positions in the business/clerical area. Training is
available.
Professional Actor
This course trains students with the fundamentals of acting necessary for entry-level
employment in all mediums related to the acting business, including stage, film, television and
commercials. Students will gain hands-on experience by performing in front of an audience at
local community theatres and/or other professional performing arts venues.
Retail Marketing- CC/CVE
This course will provide students with opportunities to prepare for and achieve career objectives
in selected retail sales occupations. Learning experiences are designed to lead to employment
and/or advancement of individuals in retail sales occupations. Training will include hands-on
experience in the retail setting. Students will train for one or more of the following job titles:
cashier, customer service associate, sales person, stock or storeroom associate, assistant buyer.

Retail Marketing – Diversified * CC/CVE
This course will provide students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) an opportunity to
prepare for and achieve career objectives in selected retail sales occupations. Learning
experiences are designed to lead to employment and/or advancement of individuals in retail
sales occupations. Training will include hands-on experience in the retail setting.
Small Business Management
This program is designed to provide students with the skills to be successful in a business of
their own. Areas of study will include business opportunities, salesmanship, presentation of
merchandise, business plans, sales promotion, marketing, personnel, financial knowledge,
laws, licenses, permits and insurance. Training may include hands-on training in the student
store or a structured internship.
Stagecraft Tech: Lighting & Sound
This course prepares students for entry-level jobs in the theatrical production industry.
Hands-on training helps students gain necessary skills and knowledge to perform the many
tasks involved in theater productions. Students learn set design, lighting principles, duties of
occupations in theater production, props, sound, and special effects. Job titles that may be
taught include: Set Decorator, Special Effects Specialist, Grip, and Lighting Technician.
