When one considers all that is in-volved in having an economythat benefits all, a wholistic ap-

proach is a requirement. Identifying the eco-nomic theory being applied helps the publicunderstand what is going on. Time is a factor. There is a need to gather factual information, which is then used to formulate public policythat benefits all stakeholders.

Legislation and regulation is needed toensure that our captains of industry are guidingtheir corporations in a manner that producesthe greatest good for the nation. Corporationsmust earn profits while providing employmentfor the labor force. There is a need to constantlymonitor all financial activities in order to detectfraud, profiteering, waste, ineffectiveness andother negative consequences.

This past summer was spent dealing withthe need to develop a comprehensive healthcare plan to create a seamless program ofhealth insurance coverage, which provides forall. It was only when all the stakeholders en-gaged were identified that it became possibleto propose a framework of legislation that builton what works now.

However, if we are to provide comprehen-sive health care insurance for all, we must for-mulate an economy that provides income, ifnot employment, for all. What is required is theplacement of money in the hands of consumerswho become empowered to make choices

when purchasing anything needed, includinghealth care insurance.

When our financial industry tanked, so didconsumerism allegedly because each individ-ual became more thoughtful and frugal as aconsumer. Recently credit card companieswhich have taken steps to raise their interestrates and charge fees for every possible serviceprovided, even the use of an ATM, are constrict-ing consumerism.

The American consumer economy hasbeen crippled by the prior fiscal policies of thisnation. The Obama administration would dowell to analyze the current practices of the en-tire financial industry so as to know where con-sumers are being abused, exploited orneglected.

There are too many financial industry ex-ecutive leaders who are totally committed toprofiteering without consideration of the sev-eral hundred millions of consumers who makeup this most powerful economic engine: TheAmerican Consumer Economy. Another majorfinancial meltdown must be prevented ifAmerica is to remain a global superpower.

Why is all this important to the averagecitizen? Well this stagnant economy, which re-sults in high unemployment levels, was causedby faulty fiscal public policy. Neither the Amer-ican people nor their elected officials are facingthe current reality that this recession presents.Past public policy permitted manufacturing to

go offshore with the outcome that ordinaryAmericans have no local jobs.

The main challenge to be faced by theObama Administration and which must be ad-dressed is the loss of competition in too manysectors of the global economy’s markets. Onemajor challenge is the loss of America’s manu-facturing capability, which provides well pay-ing jobs to its labor force. Another majorchallenge is to discover new ways to provideeconomic support to the unemployed. Povertylevels are increasing. Today the requirement tobe successfully competitive requires high levelsof automation and robotics, lower corporatetaxes, wages dropped to the level of those pre-vailing offshore, and relief from the high costsof employee health care insurances.

Today there is no comprehensive politicaldiscussion about any of these essential basicissues, which are the proper objective of publicpolicy affecting everyone. Until the Obama Ad-ministration begins its due diligence on theseissues dealing with these economic matters, there will be no recovery from this recession. The outcome is already evident: too many lowincome wage earners simply have no work pro-viding incomes which enables them to partic-ipate as American consumers with are-envirgorated vision of their AmericanDream. This stagnant economy needs wholisticattention addressed to its basic foundations.Δ

AVISO DE INTENTO DE ADOPCIONSanta Clara Valley Water District

Noticia de Intento de Adoptar una Declaración

Negativa Mitigada

The events of September 11, 2001 led manypeople to feel compassion towards othersthroughout the country and the world. People

that would otherwise not want anything to do with oth-ers that were different from them suddenly found them-selves lending a helping had to those in need. Race wasnot an issue.

In April of this year, President Obama signed the Ed-ward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The bill officiallyrecognized September 11 as a National Day of Serviceand Remembrance. The day is intended to remind indi-viduals that their fate and that of the United States is in-herently tied.

Service projects marking the eight-year anniversaryof 9/11 took place in all 50 states, ranging from fooddrives and home repairs to neighborhood cleanups anddisaster preparation activities. In many areas, volunteershonored veterans, soldiers, or first responders by collect-ing donations, assembling care packages, and writingthank you letters.

In San Jose, Sacred Heart Community Service did itspart to serve the community by creating a new programcalled La Mesa Verde.

The program is a partnership between local busi-

nesses, schools, faith communities, and our low-incomeneighbors and provides all the materials to plant raised-bed, organic gardens in the yards of low-income fami-lies.

“So far today we have built 18 gardens,” said ToddMadigan, director of development and communicationsat Sacred Heart. “We want people be able to grow theirown food so that they could eat it and share it with theirneighbors. Hopefully they will have some left over andshare it with Sacred Heart.”

Over 150 volunteers participated in this program. Many of them were happy with the results. Some saidthe boxes were well designed, while others said the landwas easy to work with. The seeds for these vegetableswill be planted on September 26.

Mayor Chuck Reed praised Sacred Heart for theirwork and said, “There is no better community service or-ganization in San Jose than Sacred Heart.”

Sacred Heart will continue its work and hopes thatmore people will come forward and volunteer for thisproject.

“We hope to have built 100 of these gardens by theend of this year,” stated Madigan.

However, the organization still needs extra equip -ment to complete this task. This equipment includesgloves, drills, hoes, rakes, shovels and a wheelbarrow.

A Time to Serve

Twenty three community leaders areurging San Jose and area cities to re-ject a proposed 25 cent tax or ban on

plastic and/or paper carryout bags. Academic, business, political and taxpayer representativescall the proposal a new shoppers’ tax and arevoicing support for expanded plastic bag recy-cling, public education and increased litterclean-ups.

“We encourage the Santa Clara CountyBoard and other municipalities to support Cal-ifornians new plastic bag recycling law (AB2449) before arbitrarily enacting plastic bag

bans or taxes that will hurt anyone who shopsat any type of store without benefiting the en-vironment,” community leaders stated in theirletter to area officials.

We know from experience that educationand convenient collection points motivate con-sumers to recycle. San Jose’s proposed bag taxpenalizes consumers, does nothing to promoterecycling and won’t reduce litter.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Sili-con Valley also has expressed its opposition tothe new tax or ban on bags.

The healthcare issue has been de-bated at town hall meetingsthroughout the country all sum-

mer long. For the most part, the participantsof these meetings have been loud, rude andobnoxious. They have interrupted elected of-ficials and depicted President Barack Obamaas Hitler.

Fortunately, that was not the case onSunday, September 13, as CongressmanMike Honda (15th District) held a healthcaretown hall meeting at Santa Clara University.

“We have been dealing with this issuefor over 50 years now,” Honda said. “It is timefor this country to make sure that everyonehas some form of health insurance.”

Honda said that he and the membersof Congress will be working on a bill that willdrive the cost of healthcare down and createcompetition. He also said that companieswill not be able to deny coverage to individ-uals due to pre-existing conditions or be-cause they had lost their jobs.

“If this bill passes, people will receivehealth insurance from their companies be-cause it will be against the law not to haveany form of health insurance,” Honda said.

According to Honda’s office, in 2007, 60percent of U.S. bankruptcies that were filedwere a result of high medical costs. In thenext ten years, the number of Americanswithout health insurance will reach 61 mil-lion. Honda’s own district already has 72,000residents without health insurance.

“The U.S. spends twice as much moneyon health insurance as any other industrial-ized nation, but we have worse results,”Honda said. “All we see is a continued rise inpremiums.”

Aside from a few hecklers, the townhall meeting was full of people who be-lieved the public option was necessary. Theyasked Honda what sort of coverage theycould expect to receive and if all the Democ-rats were on board to pass the bill.

Guadalupe Rodriguez, a resident ofHonda Congressional district, asked if thehealthcare package would cover women’sreproductive healthcare.

However, Honda said that is an issuethat is still being discussed.

According the Web site,healthcare.barackobama.com, the health-care plan that is in the works will providemore security and stability to those whohave health insurance. It will provide insur-ance to those who don’t. And it will slow thegrowth of health care costs for families, businesses, and government. It’s a plan thatasks everyone to take responsibility formeeting this challenge - not just govern-ment and insurance companies, but em-ployers and individuals. And it’s a plan thatincorporates ideas from Senators and Con-gressmen, from both Democrats and Repub-licans.

September 11, 2009, marked the 8th year sincethe country came together as a nation after fac-ing the loss of the Twin Towers and the lives of

many innocent people. The Fire Department of San Josecame together with community members to rememberthose who served and gave their lives. A flag held togetherby two fire trucks waved in the air as different people wentto the podium to shared personal stories. A feeling ofmourning was present, but dealt with in a noble manner.A wreath was placed next to the bell at San Jose’s first firestation and after, the bell rung to commemorate thefallen fire fighters of 9/11. It is clear that that day changedthe nation, and we will continue to remember.

With all the stress of work (or lackthere off) and other everyday lifecircumstances, it has become very

difficult for many Americans to stay fit andhealthy. Obesity rates have hit 63 percent and thediabetes rates continue to climb.

These unhealthy statistics are the drivingforce behind the 5th Annual Healthy Children’sDay. The event was held on Saturday, September12, at the Children’s Discovery Museum of SanJose and was put together by Assembly memberJoe Coto, 23rd Assembly District. Coto’s officeeven gave out free admission to up five familymembers.

“We want to educate parents and their chil-dren about the importance of staying healthy byeating right and by exercising,” said LorraineGuerin, District Director for AssemblymemberCoto. “We want the children to learn while theyare still young and to pledge to stay healthy.”

The children also learned about the impor-

tance of good hygiene from Kaiser Permanente, one of the many agencies involved in the event.

“Kaiser is here to show the children how toproperly take care of themselves.” Guerin said.“They also told them about the importance ofgetting the proper amount of sleep.”

Other agencies that were involved with theevent include: Mt. Diablo Dental Health Society,Sports Basement, Children’s Health Initiative,Partnership for Prescription Assistance, BeverlyBurbank Lions and VSP Vision.

“All these agencies provide the children withdifferent ways to take care of themselves,”Guerin said. “VSP Vision is giving the childrenfree vision test and the Children’s Dental Clinicis giving out free toothbrushes, dental floss andtoothpaste.”

Most children like to drink soda and othersweet drinks. Rethink Your Drink was there toprovide information on drink alternatives.

“It is important for children to know thatthere are other drinks other than soda out there,”Guerin said.

Author Kymberli Brady was also at the event to autograph her book The Sleepy Little Star.Despite having several agencies volunteer

their time for this event, Guerin said that it wasnot difficult at all to get everyone on board forthe event.

“Everyone was very excited and wanted todo their part in making sure this event was suc-

cessful,” Guerin said. “In fact, next year we willhave ambulance workers at the event.”

Guerin also said that the event also gets big-ger every year.

“Next year we will have even more agenciesparticipate in this event,”

En PANDORUM, Dennis Quaid (G.I.Joe, Van-tage Point) y Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma, AlphaDog) se suman a Cam Gigandet (Never Back
