FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK: TEACHING THE “SOFT SKILLS”
A P R I L 2 4 - 2 8 , 2 0 1 7
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Common Core Standards are designed to prepare students to be “College and Career Ready” by the end of high school. While we teach reading and language arts (in Spanish and English), Math, Social Studies, Science, etc., those academic skills alone are not enough to help our students be successful in college or careers. In fact, both employers and college instructors often say that the students who come equipped with the “soft skills” are the ones who are truly ready to be successful. And apparently, about three-fourths of new employees and freshmen in college lack adequate skills in these areas.
What are those “soft skills” that employers and higher education teachers are looking for? The lists vary, but often found among the “soft skills” are the following:
Integrity – People can count on your word and you follow through with what you have promised to do.
Communication – Being able to write for authentic audiences, participate in group discussions, and present to the group.
Courtesy – being respectful and courteous with others.
Responsibility – Following through with your assignments, assuming your share of the workload in a collaborative team, showing up and doing the work
Professionalism – Using behaviors expected of a worker or
student (being on time and coming prepared, being respectful of others, completing assignments, and adapting writing to the needs of others).
Flexibility, managing workload – Being able to organize long-term, problem-based projects that must be completed within parameters and interim deadlines as they see fit and without being micromanaged
Teamwork – Being able to work with diverse groups of people to accomplish a goal and to establish communication, trust, integrity, responsibility, and collaboration.
Have these skills been important in your adult life as a student or employee?? We think it’s important to prepare Edison students for college and career readiness beyond the academics. How do you think we can work together to help our students develop a well-rounded set of “soft skills?”

Announcing the new Edison Community Support Network. Families often face hardship at different times and for many different reasons. We believe that Edison is a community that values looking out for each other and providing support in times of need. For this reason, we are thrilled to announce the Edison Community Support Network. Families who may be in need of emergency or longer term assistance can already reach out to Yoly Gutierrez, but our new network will work with Yoly to grow that support in whatever way we can. For example, we are raising funds to help with services such as:
- Rental assistance - Emergency funds for food and bills - Legal consultations
Here is how to get involved: Support the network
1. General updates Watch for updates from the Edison Community Support Network in your email, Wednesday packets or at Cafecito. Our aim is to raise awareness about the community needs AND resources we all can offer each other and how we can become more involved community members.
2. Donations We are looking for donations of cash, gift cards to groceries, gas, metro, phone. For example $40 would sponsor a family who may be in need of getting a reliable legal consultation for their immigration status. Or maybe a family is in need of support to purchase groceries this month due to excess medical bills. Please drop off monetary donations with Alicia in the office or look for us at cafecito.
3. Network participant For those who would like to be more involved, you can join our network and help us to plan future efforts, respond to immediate community needs, or plan and attend actions in the community to represent Edison interests. We will add you to our phone tree.
Please contact Rebecca Cannara ([email protected] /415-385-0462 ) if you would like more information about joining and/or donating. If you need assistance: Please contact Yoly ([email protected] / 310-450-8338 ext. 61312). Your information will be confidential. You will be able to meet with Yoly and she will act as the liaison to the network. Your information will not be shared with the larger group. You may do both! Maybe you are part of the network, but you are also in need of support right now. Please reach out to us!

Carrots
Healthy Fun Facts and Serving Ideas: Carrots are the second most popular type of vegetable after potatoes
There are over 100 species of carrots.
Some are big. Some are small and they come in a variety of colors including: orange, purple, white, yellow, and red
PRODUCE TIPS
Enhance the naturally sweet flavor of carrots by adding a little honey or sugar when cooking.
When cooking carrots be sure to cut the pieces as close as possible to the same size so that they will cook evenly.
Peeled carrots will sometimes develop a dry, white coating when being stored. If they seem to be acceptable otherwise, the carrots can be rehydrated by soaking in cold water for a short period of time. This should rid the carrots of the white coating and bring them back to their original color.
