Selfish Salvation??

We live in a selfish world and the main reason is because we are selfish people! Selfishness is dangerous when dealing with our families, our jobs and our friends, but it can be deadly when we begin to take credit for our spiritual success. Consider this - when a person in our church becomes a Christian, how do we describe this? What words do we use? Usually we say they were baptized. They will tell others, “I was baptized.” Now baptism is good and right - but doesn’t it seem like we are saying that my decision and my actions determined my salvation? For example, say a man is drown-ing in a lake with no hope for rescue, you spot him and throw him a life-line. He grabs it and you pull him to shore. The first words out of his mouth are, “I sure am glad I held on to the lifeline or else I would have drowned.” Now although it is true that he would have perished had he not held the life line, but should not his gratefulness and appreciation to the rescuer been first and foremost on his mind and lips? Likewise with our salvation, certainly our response to the gospel (including bap-tism) is significant, but should we not give first and lasting praise to the One who saved us? Christians in the first century did not point back to their baptism when contemplating their salvation...they went back to the cross and gave credit where credit is due. “At one time we too were foolish, disobedi-ent, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures...But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we have done, but because of His mer-cy” (Titus 3:3-5). They were taught that one is “saved by grace through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God not by works lest any man should boast” (Eph. 2:8-9). Even when reminded about their baptism, first century Christians were told that they were “baptized into Christ Jesus”, “baptized into His death” and “united with Him” (Romans 6:3-5). Being saved is a wonderful blessing but as saved people let’s be sure that others know that we have contributed nothing to our salvation and see that others understand that Jesus Paid it ALL!

God is Good! Richard

We are excited to announce that our WOW days will be

taking place this Summer, July 9th and 10th!

We will have teens from Westwood and Ohatchee serving our community on both of those days, but we need work! If you

or anyone that you know needs minor work done to their home please let us know!

We will not be able to climb ladders or get on roofs. A sign-up sheet will be going around in the classes this morning. Please

sign up if you need help with a project.

Thanks!

Travis Byrd

Richard’s Reflections Byrd’s Eye View

Worldview beliefs do affect one’s life and culture. Ideas do have consequences. So it is important to consider how the Christian worldview should be lived out and affect our society and us. For one thing, good integration of faith and learning can be salt and light to a world that needs a lot of both. A long-standing issue in the Christian faith is the sacred-versus-secular debate. One argument for separating the sacred from the secular is that Christians have been given the Great Commission of evangelizing the world in Matthew 28. This is so crucial that other concerns pale in comparison. Sometimes the sacred-secular division arises from a call to higher holiness. “Separate yourself from the world and its sins,” becomes the message. These are legitimate concerns, but we must remember that we have a cultural mandate beginning in Genesis 1:26-28 to be good stew-ards of all God has created. Christians may not be of the world, but they are still to be in the world, relating as salt and light to the world’s culture and knowledge pursuits. We, as God’s people, should live with love for our neighbors, a commitment for values, and a sense of purpose, being a stabilizing influence during times of storm.

Event: Game night! This Wednesday, June 13th from 5:00-6:45 our K-5th grades are invited to play games and eat pizza in the gym be-fore church. It’s free!

Thanks: Thank you for your prayers over camp! It was a great week and we can’t wait until next year!

VBS: There is an Amazing Discoveries sign up list on the bulletin board outside the nursery if you still have not signed up for a slot.

Wonders: Today’s Wonders will be about salvation. We will discuss the Helmet of Salvation from Ephesians 6 as well as how we receive salvation from Luke 23-24.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A Decent Burial An inexperienced preacher was to hold a graveside burial service at a pauper’s cemetery for an indigent man with no family or friends. Not knowing where the cemetery was, he made several wrong turns and got lost. When he eventually arrived an hour late, the hearse was nowhere in sight, the backhoe was next to the open hole, and the workmen were sitting under a tree eating lunch. The diligent young preacher went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place. Feeling very guilty because of his tardi-ness, he preached an impassioned and lengthy service, sending the deceased to the great beyond in style. As he returned to his car, he overheard one of the workmen say to the other, “I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years and I’ve never seen anything like that!”
