Road Safety Rules for Kids When it comes to the safety of your children, you should not
compromise. Teach about road safety for children as soon as
they are old enough to step out of the house.
Here are a few rules;
1. Stop, Look, and Cross
Your child may have to cross the street to get to a
friend’s house or a neighbour’s. Teach your kids to cross
the road safely.
2. Don’t Run on Roads
Children may not always have patience and may tend to run across the street to get to the other
side. Teach your kids to stay calm on the road and never to run or sprint.
3. Always use Sidewalks
Teach your kids to use the sidewalk when walking, make use of the walking paths.
4. Staying Safe on a Bicycle
Cycling rules to stay safe of the road;
Always wear a helmet when riding a bike.
Check if the bicycle is in working condition before using it – breaks and lights.
Always use a light in eras with poor visibility and at night, to be easily notices by
motorists.
Use the bicycle lane. In absence, ride the bike on extreme left side of the road. Keep
your eyes and ears open to make way for vehicles behind you.
5. Be Seen, Stay Safe
Wear light colored clothes or reflective material when walking or biking at nights.

3. AESTHETCS:
BE AWARE
Firesticks (Euphorbia Tirucalli) is a succulent plant that is quite common in our estate.
It is by nature highly toxic to people and pets. The sap may cause your eyes to pain and will blister
the skin if the sap is touched, so dangerous to children and animals in particular.
When tending your firestick, wear gloves and long sleeves; and avoid touching your face.
The firesticks is strikingly beautiful when displaying its intense red blooms.

REFUSE BINS
Refuse bins (except on official collection days) may not be
placed on the pavement or be visible from street view.
Top tips to stay on top of smelly refuse bins (especially over the hot summer months):
Avoid over filling bins and always try to keep the lid closed flat.
Avoid leaving leftover food exposed to flies before putting it into the bin.
Where possible keep your bin out of direct sunlight.
Clean and disinfect your bin regularly with products like Zoflora Antibacterial Bin Freshening
Gel or Lysol disinfected spray.
Sprinkling vinegar or bi-carbonate of soda (baking soda) into the bin will help reduce odour.
Clean up spillages around your bin straight away.

Reasons to Love Spring Now that the warmer weather is taking hold of our beautiful country, and providing bright
colourful hues across the landscape, we thought to share a few reasons for absolutely loving
Spring!!
1. Sunshine After the shivering cold mornings having sunny days with the odd cold one is infinitely better
than the gloomy grey days that winter forces us to become accustomed to.
Sunshine calls for outdoor fun so pull on your hiking boots or dig deep in your drawer for your
almost-forgotten swimsuit. Summer is getting closer with each sunrise!
2. Cycling Enjoy the fresh outdoor air as you take an early morning or afternoon bike ride. Nothing says
spring like a cool morning ride to celebrate the change of season.
3. Hiking Spring offers some of the best weather for hiking with sunshine but without the all-
encompassing heat, that summer generally brings. Grab your backpack, friends, sunscreen
and head to one of Pretoria’s hiking trails.
4. Picnics Spend some time amongst the spring blossoms with a picnic basket packed with home-made
sandwiches, cheese, fruit, and some sparkling grape juice. Soaking up the sunshine on a
blanket with tasty treats.
5. Braai As soon as the sun gets rid of its cloudy blanket and rises to the occasion, it is every true South
African’s instinct to light a braai fire.

5. GENERAL
Cat or Felis catus I presume?
Ailurophile, Gelurophile
a lover of cats. Also called felinophile, philofelist, philogalist.E
Did you know that just 70 years ago, few cats lived entirely indoors at all? In fact, for more than 10,000
years, cats have lived outdoor lives, sharing the environment with birds and wildlife. Understanding
cats’ place in history and human evolution reveals how very recently domestic cats came indoors
and how millions of this species—feral cats—continue to live healthy lives outdoors today, as all
domestic cats are biologically adapted to do.
Cats began their unique relationship with humans 10,000 to 12,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent,
the geographic region where some of the earliest developments in human civilization occurred
(encompassing modern day parts of West Asia). One such development was agriculture. As people
abandoned their nomadic lifestyle and settled permanently to farm the land, stored grain attracted
rodents. Taking advantage of this new, abundant food source, Middle Eastern wildcats, or felix
silvestris lybica, preyed on the rodents and decided to stick around these early towns, scavenging
the garbage that all human societies inevitably produce—just as feral cats do today.
Over thousands of years, a new species of cat eventually evolved that naturally made its home
around people: felis catus. Today, pet, stray, and feral cats belong to this species that we call the
domestic cat.
Keeping cats indoors all the time was not possible—nor was it even a goal—until several important
20th century innovations: refrigeration, kitty litter, and the prevalence of spaying and neutering.
Even though these changes to our modern lifestyle make keeping cats inside possible, biologically,
cats are the same as they were thousands of years ago. Their role in our society has evolved and
broadened over the last hundred years, but their basic behaviors and needs haven’t changed….
Every cat is an individual, with his and her own history and personality.
The roaming cat
The yowling, fighting, roaming are the mating behaviors of cats. Often, the spraying of urine is a
territorial gesture by an unneutered cat. Once cats are spayed or neutered, these behaviors will stop.
By neutering your cat, you'll reduce this wanderlust and find they're happy to stay put in the safe,
comfy spot next to you on the couch.
The benefits of neutering and spraying: prevent diseases, reduces fights and reduces roaming. More
importantly, however, spaying and neutering helps your cat live a healthier, longer life.
A stray cat who is healthy and friendly likely belongs to someone in your neighborhood. Cats have a
far better chance of reuniting with their owner when they're left in the area in which they’re found.
It’s a natural instinct for a cat to roam….
A cat isn’t acting out of spite or picking on you for some unknown reason. He’s behaving naturally.
9
They're attracted to people they know will keep them safe and well-cared for. So maybe, just maybe,
this cat is actually fond of you…
Here are some humane ideas and caring methods to discourage roaming cats from dilly-
dallying near your home.
It is a cat’s natural instinct to dig in soft or loose soil, moss, mulch, or sand. Use gentle
deterrents to keep cats away from areas they aren’t wanted. Use citrus scented fragrances
to deter cats from yards, porches, and gardens. White vinegar, lemon juice, scatter fresh
orange/lemon peels, wet coffee grounds, crushed mothballs or salt where the cat usually
lingers. These ingredients are not harmful and will not hurt the cat or yourself but they will
discourage “stopovers” as cats dislike these scents.
To prevent a roaming cat from sleeping in your potted plants, place blunt disposable sticks,
twigs or pebbles around the pot to prevent the cat from climbing in. Ensure the sticks are
blunt so as not to injure yourself, the cat or a passing neighbor.
Using a small spray bottle, lightly squirt water on the cat whenever you see the cat outside
your door. This will discourage the cat from visiting your home again. Please use cold water
so you don’t hurt yourself or the cat.
If your bird feeder or birdhouse is mounted on a post, nail a galvanized metal guard in the
shape of an inverted cone to the post to protect the platform.
If you have any reason to believe that the cat has an owner, please think twice before
trapping the cat, unless you plan to return him to his owner.
Eldopark HOA encourages responsible pet ownership. Owners are encouraged to register their pets
at the office. This will assist us in notifying the owner in the event of a wandering pet.
Take a photo or give a description of the pet, details will be published on the D6 communicator.
Not all who wander are lost….
