Myogyi Diversion Weir in Kyaukse Township, Mandalay Region, has been commissioned since 29 August 2009. Myogyi Dam Project is intended to receive water from Zawgyi Dam to benefit farmlands, and supply about 700,000 acre feet of irrigation water to farmlands in Kyaukse District, Mandalay Region, and over 400,000 acre feet of irrigation water for greening Meiktila Plain, storing water in the catchement areas between Zawgyi Dam and Myogyi Dam. Construction of the diversion tunnel was completed by cent per cent in October 2008. The construction of the spillway is due to be over by 2010-2011. The earthen type dam is 2461 feet long and 258 feet high. The facility was built by damming the river Zawgyi between Kyeegan Mountain and Shwemyintha Mountain. It has a catchement area of 725 square miles. Its annual inflow water is 373,420 acre feet; its maximum water storage capacity, 359,550 acre feet; its stagnant water storage capacity, 59,770 acre feet; and its water spread area, 3420 acres. Extend railroad networksfor better transport

The Ministry of Rail Transportation hasplanned to construct Myitkyina-Waingmaw-Bhamo-Momeik-Kyaukme-Hsipaw-Laikha-Namhsan railroad. The construction ofMyitkyina-Waingmaw-Bhamo railroad sectionof the railroad has started recently. The localauthorities and local people are working inconcert for timely completion of the railroadconstruction.

The areas in the far north of Myanmarare in poor transport due to the geographicalconditions. Especially, Katha and Bhamo areashad lagged behind in development due to lackof transport facility in the past. At present,necessary assistance is being provided toMyitkyina, Bhamo, Putao, Nagmon andMachanbaw townships for their development.

Myitkyina-Waingmaw-Bhamo railroadsection will be 108 miles long. On completion,the railroad section will contribute to bettertransport in Myitkyina, Waingmaw, Momaukand Bhamo townships, speedy flow of naturalresources and domestic products to the marketand improvement of socio-economic status ofthe local people along its route.

Bhamo area has been facilitated withBhamo University, University of ComputerStudies and Technological University.Intellectuals, intelligentsia and technicians ashuman resources are being turned out year byyear. The health infrastructures includingBhamo People’s Hospital have been upgradedin providing health care services to the localpeople.

The State is building developmentinfrastructures regardless of distance and sizeof the regions. Thus, the railroad networks arebeing extended with a view to ensuring swiftflow of commodities and smooth transport ofthe people in all regions of the Union.

JERUSALEM, 16 Sept—Palestinian militants andIsraeli forces attacked each other on Wednesday,forming a grim backdrop for the latest round of US-driven peace negotiations. The talks ended with noagreement on the most pressing issue: Jewishsettlements.

Fire in Philippine capitalregion kills three, injures two

MANILA, 16 Sept— At least three people werekilled and two others injured in a fire that broke outat a warehouse in Quezon City, in Philippines’ nationalcapital region, before dawn Thursday, local mediareported.

The fire reached the second alarm beforefirefighters put it out at 1 am. The fatalities wereinitially identified as a 36- year-old man and his 8-year-old son. The two injured were soon rushed to anearby hospital. An initial investigation showed thefire started at the warehouse in San Francisco delMonte in Quezon City, and spread to two nearbyhouses.

in diameter and 198 feet in length. The separationwall is 1695 feet long and 48 feet deep. Thehydropower tunnel is 19.70 feet in diameter and1319 feet in length. The 18-foot-diameter diversiontunnel is 1535 feet long. With a generation capacityof 30 megawatts, the project, on completion, will beable to produce 135.70 million kilowatt hours ayear.

The building of the embankment is scheduledto be completed by 2010. The separation wall wasbuilt in 2007; and the divesion tunnel, in March2009. The spillway can be put into service by 2011-2012.

Myogyi Diversion Weir about five milesfrom Myogyi Dam, is at the foot of BodawgyiHill near Taungpaw Village. The diversion weiris of broad crest type with a catchement area of760 square miles and four gates to sieve sand andunwanted things. Myaungmadaw canal has beenbuilt to let water flow to the irrigated areasthrough the right canal of Kinda Dam. The totalamount of supplied water for greening Meiktila

Plain will be increased from 31,350 to 35,550 acrefeet soon. Kyaukse and Myittha townships havefertile soil and many water sources. Thanks to theconstructed irrigation facilities, the two townshipshave been able to boost production of crops andpaddy.

Upon completion, Myogyi Dam and MyogyiDiversion Weir will be able to give further impetusfor greening Meiktila Plain and boosting agriculturalproduction in Kyaukse District.

SAO PAULO, 16 Sept—Graffiti’s long struggle to beseen as valid urban expression, not vandalism, is beingcrowned this month with an exhibition in Brazil byinternational artists who not only sprayed officialworks but also spruced up abandoned corners of SaoPaulo.

A raid on a dilapidated factory by many of the 66artists on the eve of the event’s opening was a celebrationof the roots of graffiti, which emerged four decadesago from New York’s subway system.

It was also a triumphal declaration that, at last,they believe they have reached legitimacy ascontemporary artists, a status enhanced by theirprovocative legacy.

China, Sri Lanka vow to boostmilitary cooperation

BEIJING, 16 Sept —China and Sri Lanka on Thursdayagreed to enhance military cooperation during a meetingof senior military officials.Recent years had seen thecontinuous consolidation and development of China-SriLanka relations, said Chen Bingde, Chief of the GeneralStaff of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of Chinawhen meeting with Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Secretary of theMinistry of Defence, Public Security, Law and Order ofSri Lanka.
