engagement. “At the end of the day, it’s not about the number of followers you have,” he explains, pointing to the inflated follower counts of many influencers and brands. “What is most important is whether or not your content is breaking through the noise, resonating with people and achieving the designated outcome — whether it be downloads, views, link click-throughs, etc.” Those goals will also help determine which platforms to utilize. For instance, if you are driving tune-in for an event, Moore says a Facebook Live just before the event and encouraging people to join when your Facebook Live ends is powerful. An example

he points to is Yearwood going live Saturdays for #TsCoffeeTalk right up until Trisha’s Southern Kitchen starts, then viewers can turn on the Food Network to watch the show while she live-tweets along. Yearwood engages throughout the morning, because as Moore stresses, “When creating a strategy, it’s important to figure out how to use the different social media platforms together — how to distribute unique content across them and stay engaged. Remembering to talk with your audience, not at them.” Authenticity breeds relationship. “The genuine connection you build with your following is what ultimately sets you apart,” says Moore, who notes the power of being live is best illustrated by Brooks. “Garth loves to take his community on journeys, whether it’s backstage at the iHeartRadio Awards for Artist of the Decade or in the car in a remote area,” he says. “You can utilize social media to update people, but ... Garth and Trisha’s goal is to create an experience for their fans.” Both artists also handle their own social media. “They look to me for the latest updates and to tell them the tools to facilitate their visions, but they know their audiences. They create their content, and they are personally interacting on the platforms — and that is really the key.” Brooks and Yearwood went Facebook Live before their CBS special in April, drawing 2.2 million views in the pre-show (watch here) and helping drive 5.7 million viewers to the special. “Pulling back the curtain and allowing people to join them on their journey and encouraging fans to help them choose what songs to sing made a huge difference,” Moore says. The more collaborative you can be on social media, the bigger the return. Moore’s team worked closely with Country radio on the music video release for Brooks and Blake Shelton’s “Dive Bar,” which had more than 30 million views in five days. They granted local stations crosspost access so they could premiere the video to their markets, allowing them to drive to their own Facebook pages and benefit from

A day in the self-isolated life of River House/Columbia’s Jameson Rodgers: My new schedule — thanks to quarantine — is going to bed early and waking up no later than 6:30am, which is going to be bad when touring starts back up. I’ve been writing a ton, working out, playing golf when I can, etc. I’m a creature of habit, so I haven’t jumped on any new hobbies yet. I bought a house recently, right before quarantine, and I live here alone for now. My girlfriend keeps me company a lot, and we’ve done a pretty good job at staying sane. Time will tell. For me, quarantine has enhanced my writing. Just having time to write is a blessing. I was gone for most of last year and didn’t have many chances to write. I’ve been able to put the finishing touches on my album, which was amazing. I think

everyone was just so excited to play music again. So, overall, it has enhanced my creative spirit. I’m definitely ready to play a show again, though. Thank God for social media, right? Without it, it’d be extremely difficult to stay connected. Being able to go live and play some songs for fans has been great. I have been doing a live show every other Saturday night and have really enjoyed it. I think the fans have, too. My favorite quarantine shows have been Outer Banks, Ozark, Tiger King and 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. I’ve been patiently waiting for season three of Yellowstone, too. I am currently addicted to sugar free Jell-O with fat free Cool Whip. The silver lining for me is being afforded the time to write so much more

than usual. I’ve been able to get back in the room with my co-writing friends that I’ve missed so much.

the content. Moore concludes, “When you work collaboratively on social media, it’s a win for everyone.” (Watch the video here) Moore hopes the biggest takeaway is to be active and engaged on the social media profiles you utilize. “Focus on the channels and platforms that are reaching your audience and find ways to use them that your audience enjoys engaging with,” he suggests. It’s equally important to recognize which social platforms help you attain your goals, and his overall suggestion in optimizing any platform is consistency. “Garth’s followers know he’s going to be live on Facebook every Monday night for Inside Studio G, and Trisha’s followers know that she is live every Saturday morning for #TsCoffeeTalk. The consistency allows for appointment viewing and repeat viewing. Live video is a powerful tool — not just for performance, but for interaction and true engagement.”

In closing, Moore warns “Remember, billboards are for the highway. Social media is about conversation.” Reach him here.

if cume figures were off and listening patterns changed.” As cume returns, concern that new habits will be a permanent detriment to radio might be overblown. “There’s no doubt that online radio listening is and has been growing for years,” says Townsquare SVP/Programming Kurt Johnson. “But I doubt that during the shutdown people spent time at home working on a new way to listen during their commute. If their car was just sitting there, the radio still has all its presets, and their favorite Country station is right where they left it.” Meanwhile, many Country stations enjoyed strong ratings, even with decreased commuting and a drop in the incidental listening Roberts mentions. Here are three: WCTK/Providence: The station moved 7.9 - 9.8 - 9.4 (March, April, May) with cume shifting 262,800 - 227,400 - 268,500. PD and Hall VP/Programming Bob Walker says TSL has been his focus. “Like any crisis, once you get an idea on what is happening outside of your control, you pivot to reflect the new

way consumers use your product. Seeing a drop in weekly cume but higher TSL signifies a loss of P2s and P3s. We re-sorted the library to reflect core passion and not worry about the other layers of listening, which had evaporated. “The core Country audience was our biggest customer – and they listen more frequently,” he continues. “We dropped current spins significantly, revisited song codes to keep non-core sounds far apart and added a comfort food category of ‘90s and ‘00s songs that had been out for a while. When people are seeking out normalcy, a favorite song from the past gets it done every time.” Being the Northeast, the WCTK audience is just now beginning to feel the absence of outdoor venues and touring season. The station turned to alternative promotions including its Backyard Barbecue Memorial Weekend, Summer Staycation Weekends and Summer Block Parties. “Last year, we did a virtual Kenny Chesney live show, as he did not play Gillette,” Walker says. “Virtual Kenny-Fest 2 is already on the docket for August 28!” Walker has also kept the station from playing too strongly to current events. “WCTK’s core wanted nothing to do with ‘all in this together’ liners or ‘COVID Carol’ songs – a term authored by a Cat Country P1. They were getting that everywhere on TV, social media and a lot of radio.” Personalities were coached to offer listeners an escape and avoid “work from home” talk. “Our core fans are the essentials working retail, construction, healthcare, sanitation, law enforcement, etc. We’ve gone out of our way to let them know we are working every day on the job ... just like them. I credit this with our strong daily cume numbers, despite weekly cume erosion.” KFKF/Kansas City: An April spike to No. 1 overall (10.4) settled in May (6.5), though the station retained its format

leadership in the market. PD/morning host Dale Carter says the station has doubled down on its position. “We’ve gotten tougher on what constitutes a country song,” he says. “My gut told me, and tells me, that through this, radio listeners want comfort. Our station is very hit-oriented from the ‘90s to currents with special programming that goes back even further. I know I frustrate Nashville sometimes, but I just don’t think this is the time to load up with unfamiliar music that our

listeners might not even recognize as country. “This is the time to solidify that one-on-one relationship with the listener,” he says. “No format connects better with adult listeners than country music. We have songs about life … every

aspect of it. We need personalities who can make that human connection with listeners between the records. I’m blessed to have a staff that gets that.” KYGO/Denver: Moving 6.3 - 7.6 - 7.5, the station has also seen cume return a solid chunk (44,000) of those lost in the March to April drop (392,500 - 276,900). PD Brian Michel has also focused on TSL, noting that good fundamentals are at the heart of any successful monthly. “TSL has been appreciably higher – about an hour more. I would say that’s more a byproduct of doing the right thing ... being live and local 24/7, hyper focusing on the community and providing compelling reasons to tune in, whether that’s in the car, on a smart speaker or streaming through the app.” The station’s efforts have included Front Line Fridays to focus on essential workers, Takeout Tuesdays that support local restaurants and Help Wanted Wednesdays which offer employment assistance. A food drive and focus on mental health issues have also connected the station with its community. “Figure out what makes your brand special and compelling,” Michel says of the key question facing programmers. “What’s the station’s purpose in the community? All the best practices and PPM mechanics in the world won’t make your brand special or meaningful. Those things may help you sound like a Spotify playlist, but that’s not what radio is. Fulfill the obligation of the license, serve the community and make a positive impact. The rest will take care of itself.” More than that, Country radio has a chance to emerge stronger. “We’re already seeing more cars on the road, and that typically leads to more radio usage,” Michel says. “With the strong relationships we have built with listeners during the pandemic, more local-focused brands may see bigger cume numbers than [they] had going in – fueled by the return of in-car and continuation from the acute increases of smart speaker usage we saw.” Reach Walker here, Carter here and Michel here.
