KANA Kana is fast approaching and students are busy making decorations for our 'Around the World' float. The parade begins at 1:00 pm on Saturday 16th from behind McDonalds in Grant Street. We won't know our exact position in the parade until the week before. Have you got your 'Around the World' costumes sort-ed? Please indicate whether your child/ren will be participating in the Kana procession on the day and return the slip to school just so I can have some idea of how many children will be involved.

Thanks, Caroline McCallum. -------------------------------------------------

INDO CORNER:

Welcome to INDO CORNER – a small

section of the newsletter devoted to our

teaching of Indonesian. During the year

the children will learn about the

language and culture of Indonesian – our largest, closest neighbour.

I thought it would be a good idea if the school community also had

a ‘crash course’ in Indonesian, via the newsletter. Today we are

looking at NUMBERS.

STOMACH FLU

General Recommendations for how long to stay

home

In general, you need to stay home or keep your kids home for 24 hours after the symptoms of the illness subside. This includes vomiting and diarrhoea, and don't forget the fever.

If your child is running a fever, he/she is contagious and is more likely to spread germs to everyone they come into contact with. Even without a fever, stomach viruses are highly con-tagious and spread easily from person to person when you have symptoms.

It can be tempting to send your child to school if they went all night without vomiting or having diarrhoea, but waiting a full 24 hours after the last episode occurred is important because the symptoms could return. If you make it a full day and night with no symptoms, it is unlikely that they will reappear after that. www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au

Classroom Connection

Week 6 already! Our Grade 6 students received their Year 6 jumpers and t-shirts this

week and they were extremely excited to show them off. This week the Year 5 & 6 co-

hort attended a camp meeting in preparation for the Melbourne Camp later in the year.

Numeracy Intervention has begun this week which has been very enjoyable to be part of.

Garden group members have been toiling away on planting new vegetables, sunflowers,

weeding and setting up a new fish pond. Taking care of the 3 chooks and a rooster named

‘Big Red’ has also been on the agenda.

Preps Representing numbers 0-10 has continued to be a key focus in Numeracy sessions for

our little maths whizzes. Students have been learning about the sound ‘d’ and ‘f ’ make and

enjoying nursery rhymes. During Reading, pointing to a word and saying it has been ea-

gerly practised. Well done to our little ones on a fantastic first Athletics Day in Week 4!

Keep up the great work little champs!

Years 1 & 2 Students have been learning and further developing their addition and subtraction skills

and knowledge. I have been fortunate enough to work with some of the Year 1 & 2 stu-

dents and I’ve been so impressed with their desire to learn and effort. Point of need

teaching is clearly evident through streamed maths lessons to ensure all students are

progressing at their level. Writing creatively through narrative writing and focusing on the

use of nouns and adjectives has allowed students to enrich their writing pieces.

Years 3 & 4 The week started with a BANG with the bookshelf collapsing in the BER! Talking about

books, understanding sequence is the reading strategy students have been learning about.

Multiplication and elements of division have been the maths focus. Students have been

drafting and writing information reports, ensuring they have the key fundamentals in their

reports. They have enjoyed researching and learning about celebrations that occur

around the world during Integrated Studies.

Years 5 & 6 Poem writing is coming to a conclusion and narrative writing is next in line. During

Maths, Year 5 students have been looking at 12 and 24 hour time and linking their learn-

ing to real life situations. Year 6 students have continued their work on prime and compo-

site numbers. They are working extremely hard on improving their accuracy and rapid re-

call of multiplication facts to become a member of the ‘90 Second Club’ in Mr Hollick’s

room. Recalling facts and details and interpreting figurative language have been the focus

during Reading.
