1.30pm Reducing Emissions from Generation to RetailJAMES MAGILL | EXECUTIVE GENERAL MANAGER PRODUCT MARKETING, GENESIS ENERGY LTDThe New Zealand electricity market is an exciting place to be in 2018. It has fantastic renewable energy resources helping to bring exciting new energy management choices to homes and businesses and putting customers in control. Genesis has recently committed to work with regulators, industry participants and Government to achieve commercial solutions to remove coal completely from the sector. This presentation will talk about how industry is leveraging new technology, providing consumers more flexibility in how they generate, store, use, sell and buy power.

1.55pm Navigating Complexity – How do we Optimise the Energy Landscape with Many Diverse Stakeholders, Complex Systems and New Technology?BENNET TUCKER | MARKET SECURITY SERVICES MANAGER, TRANSPOWERDecarbonisation is coming. Meanwhile, new technologies are starting to disrupt our energy system. Both bring significant challenges for status quo: How do we realise all the value from batteries? How do we cover dry year risk in a 100% renewable world? These are complex problems that require excellent industry collaboration.

2.20pm Energy Management Accounting ULRICH NISSEN | VISITING PROFESSOR, UNIVERSITY OF OTAGOAs ‘Management Accounting’ is compared with ‘Energy Management’, a relatively mature discipline, it might make sense to check whether the latter can take advantage of the experience, management accounting has gained over the last decades. Ulrich’s presentation will encompass:• Management accounting from an energy management perspective;• Energy management from a management accounting perspective;• Prerequisites for effective and efficient energy cost control.

2.45pm Emerging Demand Flexibility, Uncovering the Dynamic Value of Lost LoadDANIEL GNOTH | SENIOR DATA SCIENTIST, POWERCOWhangamata, Coromandel, a remote holiday location, residential population four thousand, increases to over sixty thousand during peak holiday seasons. With a highly varying load profile, Whangamata is supplied by a single 33kV line increasing the security risk. Whilst consent for a secondary line is being approved, Powerco is investigating a grid battery solution providing partial relief on the security of supply. Initial simulations showed that Value of Lost Load (VOLL) can potentially be extended by switching energy from commercial feeders to residential ones, depending on the time of day and relative demand.
