Welcome . . .

From the fi rst edition of this publication in 1999 we have strived to slightly improve on the previous years. This publication has been distributed free of charge to all the residents of our Shire throughout that time., As a community service group, the Lions Club of Boyup Brook have continued to contribute in major projects, the Sandakan Memorial Scholarship, Medical Emergency Alarms, Education Scholarships, Giant Pumkin Festival and various other community functions throughout the year.

This book continues to represent a wonderful collaboration between the Lions, the Shire and the community. Now in its tenth printing, the Boyup Brook Information and Telephone Directory continues to serve. The Boyup Brook Lions Club thanks the community for their tremendous support of this book

Please keep in mind that service groups like the Lions can only exist when membership is maintained. To join our club you just need to let us know of your interest and one of our members will be glad to invite you along to a meeting to get the ball rolling.

We have fun helping wherever needed and we operate with a strong policy of “you do what you can when you can” - You put in as much time as you feel comfortable.

Boyup Brook is lucky enough to have an ambulance service that is operated by volunteers from within the community. Currently we have three ambulances that give us an operational capacity to attend emergency calls, maintain a hospital transfer crew and attend events. � e Boyup Brook Sub-centre continually welcomes new volunteers to joins us, call in when the o� ce is open or chat to one of our existing o� cers about how you can contribute, and assist maintain this valued community service.Information about joining can be found on the St John WA website, search change lives for the online application process.

Boyup Brook Fire & Rescue . . .

Boyup Brook has a Fire and Rescue Service which covers the whole of the shire.

Our fleet consists of a HSR (Hazmat, Structural, Rescue) unit which contains all equipment for those purposes.

A 4WD Light Tanker provides back up and rural � re assistance.

� e Brigade consists of all volunteers. Training is supplied by FESA, is a very high standard and is done on a regular basis. All training and protective clothing is supplied by FESA.

Our volunteer � re � ghters are involved in a number of duties including:

• Community based school discussions

and senior citizens assistance.

• Hydrant inspections and maintenance

• Fire investigation

• Fire � ghting for building property and bush � res

• Vehicle rescue, operating tools such as “jaws of life”

• Recovery of hazardous and toxic material spills

• Education and Training

• Ongoing training including drills, multi- agency responses and equipment

• Supplying and installing smoke alarms free of charge for the seniors.

� e Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service of Boyup Brook are always looking for people with a strong sense of community

spirit and good physical skills to ful� ll the challenging role of � re� ghters.

How the 000 service works

Telstra provides the initial contact point for calls to the 000 emergency call service. Telstra’s role is to connect callers to the nearest and most appropriate emergency service (police, fire or ambulance) as quickly as possible. Once the call is successfully connected, the 000 call service operator passes the call over to the emergency service organisation operator, who manages the call from then on and takes appropriate action.

We are members of the world’s largest and most active service club around the world, with over 1.4 million members in nearly 46,000 clubs in 216 countries. In Australia we have over 28,000 members - men and women - in over 1200 clubs. In W.A. there are over 150 clubs with around 2500 members. 2017 was the the centennial of the formation of Lions International and is celebrated around the world.

Lions are actively involved in a wide range of community activities, giving help to the young and the elderly, the disabled and the disadvantaged - locally, nationally and internationally. We are the Lions ... and “We Serve”.

For over a100 years, Lions have been recognised throughout the world for their service to the blind and visually impaired, and in 1990 Lions launched Sight First, an Australian-initiated campaign to eradicate preventable and reversible blindness. Lions have provided eye banks and eyesight institutes in all Australian states, where world-standard research is carried out.

Lions also have established and operate Australia’s only training facility for hearing dogs for the deaf. Lions also have many Lions Youth activities include an International Youth Exchange programme, Living Skills and Drug Awareness programmes, � e National Youth of the Year Quest and the Leo Club Movement. On the local scene, � e Lions of Boyup Brook are seen working in the community on many projects. Most of the funds raised by members stay within our own community, but some goes to the many projects which bene� t not only the population of Australasia but Boyup Brook as well.. Members of the Lions Club of Boyup Brook are happy to have had the opportunity of producing this telephone book for use in our community. scienti� c research into blindness and incorporates one of Australia’s largest ophthalmic practices. � e Institute also houses the Lions Eye Bank and the LSSF.

As a not-for-pro� t organisation LEI relies heavily on community support including the continued generosity of Lions Clubs state-wide to fund vital equipment, scholarships and fellowships. Another State project has been � e Lions Cancer Institute this was established in 1990 as a District Project at a Convention of the Lions Clubs in District 201W2 with the support of the Lions Clubs in District 201W1, such Clubs being located South and North of the Swan River. Since its early days the Institute has funded research into the disease by supporting PhD Students in their studies into cancer. � e free skin cancer screenings were and still continue to be available to the WA regional communities and the Lions Skin Cancer Screening Unit has visited all parts of the State providing this invaluable service.

In January 1945 the o� cial rice ration ceased altogether and the P.OW. received only 3oz. per day from camp stocks which had been hoarded.Late in January, the Japanese fearing invasion, began moving the prisoners from Sandakan to Ranau. � e � rst group of 470 (450 Australians) in batches of 50, began leaving on the 29th January. None were � t by any standards; all were su� ering from beri beri, malaria, malnutrition and dysentery - 60% were bootless. � ey were made to carry anything the guards wished to hand on to them, as they battled against lack of food and beatings. The steep narrow track, o� en through impenetrable jungle would have been a test for the � ttest of men. Only 313 survived the � rst march, more dead than alive.In March the ghastly policy of denying the prisoners access to the medical supplies that had been brought from Singapore (the Japanese had ample supplies) - and systematic starvation resulted in 317 deaths. The men were now walking skeletons; most weighed between 5 and 6 stone.

Of some 22,000 Australians taken prisoner by the Japanese in 1942, 7777 died from starvation, exhaustion, disease and brutality. Amongst them were 2000 Australian (and 500 British) P.O.W. who died at Sandakan, North Borneo and on a death march to Ranau, a small village 160 miles to the West.ONLY 6 OF THESE MEN SURVIVED - BY ESCAPING INTO THE JUNGLE� e drama began in July 1942 when the force of 1500 Australian P.O.W. were sent to Sandakan to build an air� eld for the Japanese. � ey were joined in June 1943 by another 500 Australians and 500 British.Whilst conditions in the early stages were bearable in terms of their later treatment in the latter part of 1944 conditions began to deteriorate rapidly.By September the Japanese had reduced the meals to two a day, at 11:30am and 5:30pm - in December the rice ration was between 5 and 7 oz per day.By now the health of the prisoners was very poor and to that stage 120 Australian and 90 British prisoners had died.

Sandakan Memorial . . .

In May, following the landing of Australian troops on Tarakan Island to the S.E. of Sandakan, the Japanese camp Commander, Takakua, ordered prisoners to clear the camp within 15 minutes.The Japanese set fire to the camp destroying all records. � at evening the prisoners were told that all able to walk would leave in an hour on a ‘very short journey, the 290 prisoners too ill to move were le� to fend for themselves.� e marching groups (each of 50 men) soon realised they had been duped, they were heading for Ranau. Long before the first halt, men were falling by the wayside - those who lagged were driven by ri� e butts. At the end of the first days march the track conditionswere knee deep in mud, through heavy jungle and hills so steep that men had to crawl up and slide down. At each overnight stop, the many who could not continue were grouped together and shot a� er the others had moved on.On the 26th June, four weeks a� er leaving Sandakan, 142 Australians and 61 British reached Ranau. There they joined five Australian and one British prisoner, the only survivors of the 470 prisoners who had le� Sandakan on the � rst march six months before.At Ranau, no provision had been made for prisoners, they had no huts, little provisions for cooking and rain fell constantly. There were no medical supplies, water had to be carried half a mile and the daily food ration of between 70 and 75 grams of rice was the equivalent of a small cup of rice water with about an inch of rice in the bottom.By the 18th July only 72 survived. � at number had been more than halved to 32 by the following week. On the Ist August all who could walk were taken away and

shot. � e remaining 15 or 17 in so pitiful a condition that it was impossible for them to escape were hunted out of their shelters.What little is known of the sick who remained at Sandakan is based on statements by Japanese guards:� ere were 292 prisoners in the area. By 10th June 30 had died - on that day 75 were taken away and shot. � ere were then 185 alive. On the 13th July there were only 53 still living and 23 of the � ttest were taken to the air� eld and shot. � e remainder were le� to die. ALL WERE DEAD BY THE 15th AUGUST 1945.� e Sandakan tragedy, whilst it remains as a vivid and horrendous memory in the minds of all Ex Prisoners of War and the families of the men who died, had been largely forgotten by most Australians.In 1991 a Boyup Brook resident, Ted McLaughlin - himself an Ex Prisoner of War of the Japanese had erected a small memorial to some of his army friends who were part of the tragedy and in memory of all the Australians who had died in Sandakan. Two hundred people attended the � rst memorial service.It was this remarkable response which created the movement amongst ex POW, with the support of the families and friends of the victims who died in Borneo, for greater recognition of the Sandakan tragedy. This new memorial, integrating the original memorial erected in 1991, includes the names of all the Western Australian membersof the Sandakan Force of 2500 who’s tragic deaths it will commemorate.

� e Sandakan Memorial is located next to the Boyup Brook Shire Offices. A memorial service is held annually in September.

Along a winding road lined with golden wattles and native trees, there is a farm, 5km from Boyup Brook. Since the early signs of life at Boyup Brook, this farm has been in the Dickson family for generations.

� e old horse drawn carts are now retired from work and basking in the sun for all to see. � e old Massey tractor parked under the lean-to which is attached to the shearing shed, looks out at the lush, green paddocks and remembers the time when old George Dickson was at the wheel, plowing the � elds, planting the crop and spreading super to help the clover grow.

Farm animals and wild birds watch as people from all walks of life really enjoy roaming around the garden, filled with native plants and trees. Spring time adds a special splash of colour but the garden, at any time of year is always a relaxing experience.

The record room is a must. Fo l k s l o o k i n w o n d e r a t the abundance of records , posters, badges, books, spoons, cans, bottles, T-shirts and the Elvis Presley memorabilia on display. Everybody loves to sit and listen to music and take in what the record room has to o� er.

Wander over to the Bunyip Shed and gaze at memorabilia ranging from over 100 years to now. Check out the bushman’s bar, stage area and shearing pens.

All over the centre you can see an assortment of animals, sculpted out of wood. A 46 foot guitar man stands tall and proud, which started out as a tree growing in the wild. Boots, hat, eyes and a mouth have been added along with a 23 foot metal guitar. King Billy is also there on the horizon and the Sundown Corral waits for the horses at the rodeo arena.

Don’t forget the bunkhouse or the old bus, trucks, tractors, boats and canoes. � e list of things to see and admire just goes on and on.

Harvey Dickson’s Country Music Centre has helped make Boyup Brook “the heart of country music”. It is a mixture of mystery, enchantment and charm and most of all enjoyable. Also, it is original and cannot be duplicated anywhere else.

Always Melbourne Cup Day

In 2018 the Upper Blackwood Agricultural Society celebrated 100 years of showing the best that Boyup Brook has to o� er and is proudly one of the longest serving organisations in the Shire.

� e picturesque Show Grounds with pavilions, stock yards, display areas and Ring Events arenas, are situated 17 kilometres from Boyup Brook on the Arthur River Road and o� er all that is expected of a country show.

Since 1933 it has become the tradition that the Show is held on the � rst Tuesday of November (also Melbourne Cup Day).

Each year the Committee works hard to present a fresh and vibrant display and a “Schedule of Prizes” booklet and website is freely available in September for exhibitors to consider their entries; also listing the trophy donors, sponsors and the day’s Programme of Events. Each year - the Society chooses a Feature Section to highlight – next is Horses in Action; then � e Rose; Shearing, etc.

A Rural Ambassador is chosen. Harris � ompson is the current Ambassador and also the Ambassador for the South West Region, Western Australia and National Rural Ambassador – well done, Harris. If you are between 20 and 30 you could be our next Ambassador.

The Flax Mill at Boyup Brook is quoted as being ‘Histor y’. Well rightly so, it was a very large piece of Boyup’s past. Built in 1941 for the treatment of f lax grown in the area and necessary for war-t ime equipment for the armed forces. Tents, parachute harnesses, webbing , t ar p au l ins e tc . were made from the flax fibre. One item alone that was manufactured for a munitions job was fire hose. The total hose manufactured equated to 28,000 miles long and 3” wide made entirely from Australian flax. Flax was also used in linoleum floor coverings.

In the 50’s the second & third grade tow (short fibre) were sold to Japan to be used in cigarette papers and elsewhere in the world flax is used in the manufacture of clothing.

Flax is the only fibre which becomes stronger when wet allowing the very coarse fibre to be used for ropes to tie up ships when docking.

Over 400 people were involved in the f lax production throughout the district. The beer quota for the Boyup Brook hotel increased to more than all four Bridgetown hotels together.

One of the main reasons for the collapse of the f lax industry in Australia was that the price of flax fell rapidly when the Russians flooded the market with low grade flax.

In the early 60’s Bunnings, Cullity Timbers and Hearn Bros. were to form a company to make chipboard out of the flax shives and wood chips but this proposal was to fall through due to the decline of the building industry at the time.

After the closure of the mill sadly an auction was held and the workings were sold leaving only the buildings as a memory of the past.

The office built into the front of the undercroft contains a replica of the Flax Mill as it was when it was fully operational.

In 1982 the caravan park was moved from where the hockey grounds now stand, down onto the flax mill grounds. With over 50 powered and camping sites, some with ensuites, it makes a great place to holiday while touring the southwestern region.

The Blackwood River Valley begins in the North-East of the Boyup Brook Shire, a� er the Arthur River is joined by the Beaufort and Balgarup Rivers and becomes the Blackwood.

� e road which leaves Albany Highway at the Arthur River Townsite, crosses the river and continues to Boyup Brook.

Boyup Brook got its name from the Aboriginal word “Booyup” which means “Place of Big Stones” or “Place of Big Smoke”. Either one � ts as Booyup is the name of the Big Pool on the brook a few kilometres from the Town. � is pool is s u r r o u n d e d b y a t h i c k s t a n d o f b l a c k b o y s a n d t h e s m o k e f rom t hes e w hen bur nt wou ld create a “Big Smoke”. � e Big Stones” would refer to the large granite outcrops which are common in the area. � e town was established where the brook runs into the river.

� e � rst white man in the district was the famous explorer A.C. Gregory. While surveying the Blackwood River in 1845, he carved his initials and the date on a large Jarrah Tree. � e tree is now dead but his marks are still on the stump, which has now been covered for preservation.

The first settlement was in 1854, by Commander and Mrs Scott who followed a track blazed from Albany by John Hassell. They named their property “Norlup”.

In 1861 James George Lee-Steere came from Bunbury and took up a small freehold selection which he named “Jayes”, and also a 100,000 acre grazing lease. He employed shepherds to mind his ! ock on this huge area, and little sections of his original post and rail fence are still found in the bush, although the lease was eventually thrown open to settlers and most of it cleared.

In 1871 came William Forrest, brother of Lord Forrest, and he took up land which he named “Dwalganup”. By 1882 there were nineteen families here and in 1900 a school was built - the beginning of a town.

In 1909 the railway from Donnybrook was completed as far as Boyup Brook and in 1911 was extended towards Kojonup.

� e early settlers etched out a living by kangaroo hunting, and timber cutting. Although sandalwood mainly grew in the Kojonup/Williams area, many of the early pioneers were involved in the industry as well as carting the product by horse and dray to Bunbury as the old sandalwood track went through the McAlinden area.

There was no convict labour, so the district has no � ne stone buildings... the settlers needed quickly built homes of wood or home-made brick.

� e main attractions of the district are the river, abundant wild! owers in season and the beautiful surroundings and the hospitality of the people.

Boyup Brook & District Pioneer Museum...

The Boyup Brook Pioneers’ Museum is situated at the Old Masonic Lodge, Jayes Road, Boyup Brook. Special permission was granted to the few remaining members of the original Boyup Brook Freemasons Lodge to enable the Masonic Temple Building to be used as a Museum. Retained as was and rarely seen outside the organisation.

The Main Hall and Kitchen displays a fascinating collection of household, local memorabilia, personal and business items.

The Boyup Brook district is the home of Dwalanup Clover Seed, developed by the Late PD Forrest around 1910. Early harvesting implements and other agricultural implements, both hand and mechanical are housed in the large agriculture shed.

O t h e r b u i l d i n g s i n c l u d e t h e o l d mortuary, built with the establishment of the Soldiers Memorial Ho spi t a l i n 1 9 2 4 and now housing a collection of interest hospital artefacts.

� e Dinninup Railway siding shed a display which evokes memories of a time when rail transport played a large part in the activities of the district.

� e Barn holds an interesting collection of harvesting equipment, including a rarely seen � ax puller.

Kulikup School was a one room school operating from 1917-1945, re� ects on times gone by.

Two new buildings have been added in 2015, the Wash House displays a large collection of irons, washing machines etc. and the Machinery Shed of vintage tractors.

� e Museum also houses the Perth Zoon Train and Carriage from 1954, fully restored by locals.

The volunteers who are the Museum Management Committee welcome assistance from anyone with interest in the Museum’s activities, or a “knack” for restoration.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 3.00pm and new members or visitors are welcome to come along, have a “cuppa” and � nd out what we

are all about. If you haven’t already seen the Museum or haven’t for a while, make it a must as there has been many new exhibits n e c e s s i t a t i n g change.

Visitors can enjoy all the exhibits with a guided tour.

� e initial exploration of the Boyup Brook area was marked by a surveyor’s bench mark cut on this tree by Assistant Surveyor AC Gregory (1819-1905), during his � rst journey through the Blackwood district.

Much local discussion and debate has claimed the attention of local historians and organisations interested in the actual date that Gregory travelled through the area and marked the tree. Information received from the Surveyor General and various other o� cial sources indicate that there can be little doubt that this tree was blazed by AC Gregory in May 1845, during

one of his surveying trips to the south west. � is bench mark was found by HS Ranford during surveys 32 years later in May 1877. Despite the tree being a jarrah, the blaze had already begun to deteriorate, leading Ranford to record it as ‘AG over 1843’, though he queried the 3 In the many years following the finding by HS Ranford in 1877 the tree subsequently died and suffered much deterioration, including fire resulting in the last two numerals being indecipherable.

From information gathered during the course of such investigation, we can now assume with reasonable con� dence that the date on the blaze can only have been ‘1845’

BOYUP BROOK MENS ASSOCIATION / MEN IN SHEDSApproximately 12 years ago the Shire C.E.O. suggested we have mens association in town and we could use the Flex Mill dining room for our meetings.

� ey started with about 12 men and agreed to meet every � ursday evening, a� er a few years the club was o� ered another part of the building complex which the members enthusiastically accepted and have along with the R.S.L. turned it into a comfortable meeting room.

A member was in contact with some members of the Mens Shed organization and suggested we join, a� er looking around they were able to obtain, a large shed at the Flax. Mill and have equipped It so local could use It for any projects they wanted to make, � e electricity supply is all above � ood height and the lathes, Saws etc, can be easily removed. � e club has bought a Car- li� and anybody wishing to use It should contact a club member.

� e club continue to meet on � ursday evenings with BBQ tea and the chance to discuss a large range of topics so why don’t you join?

NEWLGALUP - Right hand side of Boyup Brook/Dinninup road west of Newlgalup Road, about 7kms out of Boyup on river side.

EULIN CROSSING - Reserve. Nice " at area by river - boat launch ramp - large pool 6km long and very wide in some places. Water birds. Very popular spot. Probably not large enough for camping but excellent for picnic. No facilities.

CONDINUP RESERVE - Track leads o# West Arthur Road 500 metres north of Condinup Road. Track near boundary. Easy to miss - great display of orchids in season.

Follow Kojonup Road from Boyup Brook 5kms then turn left into Reservoir Road. Pleasant walk along road with bush and water catchment area. Road terminates on Six Mile Road (approx 9 kms from Boyup Brook)

NOLLAJUP RESERVE 3.5km

Follow Bridgetown Road, turn left into Brown Seymour Road, then turn right at T-junction on Jayes-Bridgetown Road. Nollajup Road turns right approx. 8km from T-junction. Walk through bush reserve and farm land along minor road to Boyup Brook/Bridgetown Road. (approx 9 km from Boyup)

Rylington Park . . .

Rylington Park Institute of Agriculture is situated on 600 hectares of rich loamy gravel soils in the shire of Boyup Brook, Western Australia. During 1985 the property was given to the Shire of Boyup Brook by the late Eric Farleigh with the request that it be used for agricultural research and training. � e property is leased by the Shire to the Rylington Park Management Committee Inc.

As education is one of our main focuses, we host shearing schools with the financial backup of AWI (Australian Wool Innovation). Rylington’s infrastructure comprises of a 16 bed accommodation complex, a lecture room, ablution blocks, laundry and dining room equipped with a commercial kitchen. The accommodation is set out in one building, 8 rooms each with 2 single beds. A six stand shearing shed, specifically designed for training shearers host the shearing schools continually throughout the year.

� is unique facility has allowed us to focus on attracting more youth to take up the shearing or shed handing profession, a need recognized by the wool industry in general. Such an initiative has generated a lot of attention within our farming

communities, allowing us to o! er a training program that will bene" t youth seeking employment in the industry, which may or may not have a farming background.

Rylington Park o! ers the opportunity to fertilizer and/or seed companies to run trials on the property. � is gets incorporated into our annual Rylington Park " eld day. Rylington also hosts seminars and workshops and provides accommodation. � e facility is always available as venue.

Early 1940’s and the Upper Blackwood Roads Board, ( later to be known as the Boyup Brook Shire Council) showing considerable forethought and wisdom, decided that some form of � re control was needed in the area.

� e Chairman (C.E.O.) secretary, and local councillors visited the various wards soliciting help in forming a brigade. Each area needed a Fire O� cer Captain and 3 lieutenants. As added incentive the Roads Board o� ered each unit a knapsack spray and a rake.

Changes brought about by the big � re from Boyup to Mayanup, the end of the Second World War and the horse replaced(by tractor and bulldozer), increased development throughout the district. � is in turn saw an upgrade in the network of � re brigades to 19 units and a setting of common boundaries to each brigade.

The Roads B oard secretar y as Fire Officer was replaced with an independent Chief Fire Officer and Deputy. Rex Moulton and Tom Harrison two returning diggers from the war had communication experience and suggested radios. � e � rst one I had looked more like a � at fruit box, one half received and the other transmitted, aided by the aerial mounted on the front bumper of your vehical.

With clearing � nes came the necessity of permits, a way of training people to let neighbours and � re personnel know

what was about to happen.

Each phase of fire control brought changes, as the district developed the country grew richer pasture and the fires intensified at the height of summer.

As communication plays a vital role in � re � ghting, our local technicians did a marvelous job keeping radio’s operating, going out to fires and repairing on the job. Fire vehicles have come a long way from small beginnings, the radio sessions over the years have been controlled by very dedicated operators at the height of development, � e ladies kept the communication going and always had a bucket of tea and refreshments ready.

Jim Torrie has seen the Bush Fire Brigade come from a humble beginning to what it is today. Jim was present at the � rst meeting in Kulikup Hall in December 1940, Jim was elected Fire Captain in 1951 and served for 50 years as an o� cer.
