How to avoid job search mistakes
Searching for a job can be a challenging and laborious task – looking for job open-ings, reviewing your résumé, drafting cover letters, preparing for interviews – there are many steps that should be done just right, but many jobseekers however, struggle with a few common job search mistakes. Randstad Canada, the country’s leader for staffi ng, re-cruitment and HR Services offers a few tips to help jobseekers avoid making some com-mon missteps as they go through the process of searching for a job.
Jan Hein Bax, President, Randstad Can-ada, says there are some common mistakes job seekers often make because they feel rushed to fi nd a job, but he emphasizes that taking the time to do things right can re-ally make the difference in your job search. “When you have taken the time to clearly defi ne who you are, what your skills are and what you are looking for, you will make better use of your time and energy and be in a better position to target the right jobs for you,” he says.
Bax offers some additional advice to help avoid some of the job search mistakes job-seekers commonly make:
BEING TOO NARROW OR TOO WIDE IN YOUR JOB SEARCH
While you benefi t from applying to a fair number of interesting jobs, try not to waste your time applying to jobs that don’t match your skills and experience, for example if you don’t have the requirements stated in the job description. Focus your efforts on jobs that re-ally match where you are in your career path but will also give you the opportunity to grow.
NOT PREPARING ENOUGH FOR YOUR INTERVIEW
Preparation is the most important aspect of your job search, and it certainly applies to the job interview. Before going to a job interview, you need to thoroughly research the compa-ny. The more you know about the company, the more comfortable you will be discussing their goals, how you can fi t in and contribute to their success.
NOT ORGANIZING YOUR JOB SEARCH PROPERLY
The more applications you send out, the more you risk losing track of them. Make a list of the jobs you applied to, follow up with
candidate application deadlines, keep track of the e-mails you have sent, and all versions of your résumé.
LISTING DUTIES INSTEAD OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Employers know what the job they are re-cruiting for entitles. Listing duties will not tell them what value you can deliver when comparing you to another candidate who performed the same job.
Think in terms of accomplishments, how an initiative you led contributed to an in-crease in revenue, how your client service approach allowed you to renew contracts with clients, etc.
NOT HAVING AN ONLINE PRESENCE
In our social media era, an online presence defi nitively gives you a competitive edge. A LinkedIn profi le with a complete work histo-ry and a few recommendations, for example, tells prospective employers that you are con-nected with current online trends.
NOT TRUSTING YOUR INITIAL INSTINCTS
Trust your gut. If you have doubts regarding the work environment or the job description, ask questions and clarify. At the end of the day, if you are still not sure whether the com-pany is the right fi t for you, keep looking. ●

Where the legal jobs are Which specialty areas are predicted to yield
the most prospects for legal job seekers in the year ahead? Almost one-third (31 per cent) of lawyers recently interviewed by Robert Half Legal expect general business/corporate law will generate the greatest number of job op-portunities in 2013. Litigation ranked second, receiving 29 per cent of the response. Legal professionals with expertise in high-demand practice areas may have employers vying for their attention: More than six in 10 (67 per cent) survey respondents cited at least some challenge in fi nding legal talent.
“Competition for top legal talent is rising as law fi rms strive to meet client requests and augment their teams to expand service offerings,” said John Ohnjec, division direc-tor with Robert Half Legal. “Lawyers with fi ve-plus years of experience, solid business development skills and client contacts in high-demand specialties, will likely see lat-
eral opportunities increase at small and mid-size fi rms in 2013. Conversely, the market for entry-level associates and articling students should remain conservative.”
Ohnjec added that corporate legal depart-ments also are hiring experienced lawyers and law clerks to bring more commercial transac-tions, litigation and employment-related mat-ters in-house, and to reduce their spending on outside counsel. “With many law fi rms and companies hiring from the same talent pool, employers are revising their retention pro-grams to avoid losing valued staff members to other organisations,” said Ohnjec.
The survey was developed by Robert Half Legal, a legal staffi ng fi rm specialising in lawyers, law clerks, paralegals and other highly skilled legal professionals. It was con-ducted by an independent research fi rm and is based on 150 telephone interviews with lawyers in Canada. ●

A new study from BMO Bank of Montreal reveals that skills training for new hires re-mains a high priority among Canadian em-ployers in 2013.
The report, conducted by Pollara, was de-signed to determine the amount of training required for new hires entering the workforce across various sectors, and revealed:• More than one-third (38 per cent) of small
businesses state that new hires require basic training
• Another 22 per cent of small businesses have found new hires require signifi cant training and guidance
• The need for training for new hires is most prevalent among large corporations, where three-in-four say new hires need basic (47 per cent) or signifi cant (27 per cent) training“The level of talent and expertise of a
small or large business’ employees are the very foundation of success and are often the source of competitive advantage,” said Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal. “Whether it’s enrolling new and existing employees in specialized training programs at community colleges, career colleges, union training halls or through internal programs, ensuring there are resources dedicated to the training and development of new employees is essential and should continue to be a top priority for business leaders.”
Murphy added that investing in employ-ee training and development now, in con-junction with a longer-term plan, will help business owners ensure they have a supply of talented employees who are prepared to take the company to the next level of per-formance.
The statistics were released as the Federal Government announced the introduction of the Canada Job Grant as part of the 2013 Fed-eral Budget in order to align job training more closely to the skills employers need and the jobs available. The Canada Job Grant could provide $15,000 or more per person to ensure Canadians are getting the skills that employ-ers are seeking. Up to $5,000 will be provided by the Federal Government, and that amount will be matched by the province/territory and by the employer.
“This step addresses what is considered a signifi cant employment and economic issue comes at a good time for many Canadians seeking work and the employers looking to attain talent and bolster productivity and profi tability,” said Murphy. “The measures in Budget 2013 will have a positive impact on the health and long-term stability of Canada’s workforce.”
The report was conducted via Pollara with a sample of 500 Canadian business owners, conducted between February 25th and March 15th, 2013. ●
