Every weekend car boot sales are taking place the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. Thousands of Cumbrian booters will join the throng on August Bank Holiday Monday (25th August) as boot sales become a bona fide British institution. But what has a car boot sale got to do with employment opportunities in social care?

Creative Support in Kendal are holding their very own charity car boot sale not only to raise funds for an afternoon tea event for local elderly residents, but to inform local South Lakes people about just what it takes to be offered a job as a home care worker within their organisation.

Patricia Pape, manager for Creative Support’s South Lakes home care team is looking forward to a busy day chatting to local people from the back of her car. “I’ve attended many careers events in the past but this one is completely different”, giggled Tricia. “I’ll have a car just like all the other car booters, but I’ll be giving people advice about just what it takes to start a career with Creative Support as a home care worker and handing out application packs.

She went on, “there are hundreds of people out there who would make excellent home care workers who probably don’t even know it yet, or think that they should have relevant qualifications or experience. We want to meet as many men and women as possible, of all ages, from all back grounds, to talk to them about the qualities we are looking for. Qualities such as kindness; understanding; being a good listener; the ability to mix with different people; reliability; honesty; resilience and a willingness to learn new social care skills. These are some of the kinds of personal attributes we look out for,” explained Patricia.

So as well as picking up a bargain at the Creative Support boot sale, visitors could leave with the prospect of a new, rewarding career in home care.

Creative Support Car Boot sale will be held on their Kendal office car park at Natland Road, Kendal (alongside Westmorland Vets) on 25th August 10am till 1pm. Follow the balloons from Kirkby Kendal School roundabout. Tel 01539 731036 or 077891 70860.
