What’s the Rule about Rules? In the past I’ve got all hot under the collar about too many signs telling us what to do the whole time, but these days there’s a discernible trend the other way - first of all the number of organisations doing away with appraisals and Richard Branson jumping on the “unlimited holidays” bandwagon. It feels like we’re swinging from one extreme to the other without anyone noticing there’s any middle ground.
Inflexible draconian rules and regulations that treat people more like machines than human beings are rarely good for business, but a free for all really isn’t the answer either. One assumes (hopes) that behind the headlines there is a little more substance to this and a robust performance management system that will a) catch the skivers and b) ensure the workaholics take enough time off.
The problem is that while some organisations will think and plan long and hard before implementing big changes like this others, looking to keep ahead of the market and adopt the latest trend or perhaps seeing it as a quick fix for flagging staff morale, will bring it in far too swiftly and most likely abandon it as a bad idea at the first sign of trouble - with the finger firmly pointed at the concept rather than poor management of the implementation. (And it probably won’t be the first time they’ve had to abandon an ill thought through plan either)
Unlimited holidays are not necessarily a bad idea, but they’re not automatically a good one either and, as with any major change, each organisation needs to think carefully about how they would implement it.
Stories like this are great for stirring up debate about how we treat people in the workplace but they’re not great for faddy leaders chasing down the next quick fix - if there was one simple way to manage people there would be one book on the subject and we’d all read it - and life would be very dull indeed.
