Most of us traveled in during the torrential down-

pour but that didn’t dampen the

spirits of the bar-bershoppers at the convention this Spring! Four competeing quartets included members of the Heralds of Harmony; “Im-pact”, “Define Four,” “Main Street” and “Lunch Break” all sang their hearts out Friday night and made us proud. “Main Street,” “Impact” and “Lunch Break” went on to sing Saturday night in the semi-finals and “Lunch Break” and “Main Street” scored high enough to land a spot to compete at International in Las Vegas!

Friday night reheasals for choreo warm-up, and then together with the Jacksonville Big O were full of energy and action. All those men together on the risers at the combo rehearsal with the Big O Chorus sounded excellent!

At the Saturday morning rehearsal, a few changes were made to the choreo. Was that the secret to the winning score? More than likely it was only a small contribution because the singing was spectaular! Tampa scored 959! The entire chorus contest was excellent.

What a weekend! by Roxanne Clapp Great job guys!

Your hard work has paid off!~Pat Bauer

CONGRATULATIONS on your performance, Saturday. You brought the District Championship

home to Tampa. Congratulations also to Tony and “Main Street” for showing once again how it is done.

Wish we could have been there.~Tom and Judy Williams

Some of our old friends were seen on the risers of the Dick Dreger Memorial Chorus, including Lou Wurmnest, John Pennington, and Arne Helbig. Some other friends were participating via webcast! Rox-anne and Dianne were on the webcast for a whole 2 seconds as they waved to Shaun Reynolds watch-ing from Alabama, who aparently was texting with several Heralds throughout the weekend! We miss ya bud!The

Show of Champions brought “Lunch Break” to the stage, qualifying for International out of District, and they did a tribute to Papa De Rosa and asked Tony to join them on stage.

The af-terglow brought a big surprise! More than 108 gentleman piled on to the risers to sing under the direction of Tony De Rosa. It was a late night, but it was worth the wait! There was even a “reunion tour” of “Compund Interest” singing “I cannot sit with comfort or joy,” or something to that nature!

“Lunch Break” sang a parody of “Come Fly With Me” and College qualifiers “Sunny Boys” immediately followed that up by sign-ing ”Come Fly With Me!” Hysterical. And loved by all.

Kudos to Host Chapter, Heart of Florida, for all their hard work during the weekend.

Thanks to the men that helped with Risers before and after convention:Bryan Hevel, Ed McKenzie, Larry Clapp, Steve and Sammy Cragg, Lynn Hineman, Ralph Brown, Nick Nicosia, and Danny Wunderlin

Hangin’ Around the Barber Pole! by Steve Cragg, Lead

Hey Heralds! (Sorry… 2014 District Champion Heralds!)We are BACK! After a short two-month hiatus (for you baritones, that means we took a break),it’s time for another fun-filled episode of “Hangin’ Around the Barber Pole!” The Heralds haverecently been blessed with the addition of that dashingly good-looking man, Shane Scott! Most of you guys will recognize Shane either from the television show “Seinfeld,” or theinternationally acclaimed quartet “Lunch Break.” Either way, this guy is a barrel of monkeys- er.. I mean laughs, and it’s time to get to know him better! —Steve

Name: Shane Scott (duh..)

Age: 46

Home State: Kentucky

Barbershop Part Sung: Tenor & Lead How many years of Barbershop experience do

you have?: Joined in1998, so just got my 16-year card!

What other choruses or quartets have you sung with in the past?: Choruses: Masters of Harmony in Valparaiso, IN (1998), Heralds of Harmony in Tampa!

(1999-2001); New Tradition in Northbrook IL (2001-2004); Music City Chorus in Nashville (2005- 2014). Quartets: Playback in ILL District; Skyline in ILL District; Major League in DIX, and Lunch Break in DIX.

And away we go!

1.Shane, other than the Florida Gators, which are some of your favorite sports teams and why?

Ahem. Grew up 20 minutes from Lexington, KY, so I am an avid Kentucky Wildcatfan. I grew up in the heyday of the Big Red Machine, so I am a Cincinnati Reds baseball fan,and also love the NFL, although Fantasy Football has killed my team loyalties!

2. Many of us have laughed hysterically at the antics of “Lunch

Break,” and it’s easy to see that you guys just aren’t all there… Out of the four of you, which member is in the most need of serious counseling?Definitely me - for having to put up with the other three!

3. How did you come to stumble upon the wonderful world of Barbershop harmony? Can you tell us a bit about your history with the craft? I grew up singing four-part a cappella harmony in church, so I’ve always loved that sound. Later, I attended school in Temple Terrace at Florida College, where three of the members of Sweet Adelines champions “Showtime” also attended, and got to hear them many times. But I never had any formal

training in singing - my musical outlet was the violin, which I played all through school. Around 1995, I went to a music store that had a section of barbershop CD’s, and I purchased a couple. They turned out to be the 1991

and 1992 Top Twenty Quartet CDs. I put in the 92 CD, and as soon as I heard “Roses of Picardy” (sung by Tony’s first championship quartet, “Keepsake!”), I was hooked on barbershop. After piddling around a couple more years, I made a New Year’s resolution in 1998 to find the closest chapter and join, which I did that March (the sadly now-defunct Valparaiso Chapter). Later that year I moved to Tampa, and was blessed to sing with the Heralds at three straight international competitions. From there I went to Chicagoland where I won a third-place Bronze Medal with the New Tradition Chorus in 2004. Preaching then took me to Nashville, and I was able to share what I had learned in my experience in Tampa and Northbrook with the chorus there, serving at different times as Assistant Director, President, and Tenor Section Leader. In 2009, I joined the faculty at Harmony University, where I teach courses on Comedy, Chapter Leadership, How to Be a Great (Big) Tenor; Music and Neuroscience, as well as give private vocal instruction. And since 2007, I have sung Tenor with “Lunch Break.” I am glad to be back with the Heralds, and I hope to give back to the Chapter as much as it has given to me.

4. Who’s your favorite comedian and why? I think Curly from the Three Stooges was a true genius, and I love studying his timing and reactions.

5. What do you do in your “real life”, when you aren’t on the risers bustin’ a chord? I preach for the Church of Christ that meets in Valrico where my responsibilities focus on preaching each Sunday and teaching Bible classes both at church and for individuals.

BONUS QUESTIONS:

6. Paper or Plastic? Plastic (especially double plastic)

7. Have you ever been up in a hot air balloon? If not, why not? No - I am terrified of heights! It pushes the limits to be able to stand on the fourth row of the risers!

8. What is the cleverest word you know? I love the word “indubitably.”

And finally:

9. Which are cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons? Dinosaurs - reality is always cooler!

History

ER

This past Friday, our hard-working Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations, Steve Matheson, called and gave me a heads-up that Joyce McKenzie, a Tampa Tribune reporter, would be calling for an interview. She would be interviewing Tony and perhaps Chuck Steiner and me.

I had a copy of the recording that Tony had sent to Joyce. This was valuable in that he discussed our recent contest championship, our upcoming show, and the future of the Heralds. With this, I knew that he covered our current and future activities. With this knowledge, the information that I shared covered the Heralds history from the beginning of our Chapter to the current day.

Information in our history files allowed me to easily share our May, 1945, start as the very first chapter known as Tampa, Florida, #1 in the Dixie District, to the splitting of the Dixie District to make the Sunshine District, to further splitting of the Dixie District to make a new Carolinas District. We discussed many facts from our history which allowed, in her words, to ‘round out’ her article.

I’m looking forward to the article. Thanks Steve.

From the PresidentDave Roberts, Tenor

At our rehearsal on April 28, a new award was given to a very deserving recipient. The basis and background of this award were briefly discussed and the following is a more detailed explanation.

At the Board planning session last October for 2014, a recurring theme kept entering the discussion and that was the Heralds needed a ‘culture change.’ Saying it another way, the Board wanted the Heralds to be different and to aspire to a higher level of commitment and accountability. The Board realized that it must lead in this effort. As a result, the Heralds are now and will continue to enjoy new processes in striving for musical excellence, in meeting our funding requirements, and achieving membership growth. We will continue to ask each member to share in this effort and ‘change’ the Heralds to a higher level of achievement.

The specific focus of the award is on the member’s square. Tony assigns that square and it is an honor for each of us to have our square be a part of the total fabric of the Heralds. But each MUST be a bright light for commitment, accountability, and performance. The award reads as follows:

In appreciation for making your ‘square’ a bright light for performance, this award recognizes:

• Applying the knowledge from our Director for

the betterment of your performance

• Being prepared with your music and choreography

• Commitment to plan and attend rehearsals and chorus performances

• Continued dedication to our Chapter goals and programs

The award was entitled “President’s Award of Excellence,” but we now have permission to use the name of one of our Chapter icons. The award will now be called the “Joe De Rosa Award of Excellence.” As Joe joining the Heralds was a bell-weather event in our history, so his name will live on each time this award is presented. The name of the recipient will be enshrined on our website with a new entry within the Heralds Member Awards Section. The recipient will also receive a Convention Chorus DVD that contains examples of performance to which the Heralds aspire.

The first recipient of the award is Dr. Dan Deignan. Congratulations Dan.

Rehearsal Note Summary

(Continued on next page)

Active HoH Members, watch your inbox for weekly rehearsal notes sent out by The Colonel, Russ Powell.

Rehearsal Notes, April 14, 2014aA motivational recommitment discussion ensued during rehearsal where each member voiced his continued desire to be a member of an A-level chorus. Each member had an opportunity to ponder two major questions:

What kind of chorus do you want?

What are you willing to do to get there?

Developing singleness of purpose seems to be required before we can begin to achieve much together. If we expect to become an A-level chorus, we need to have the same vision. We need to buy into the shared vision of the musical leadership. This is really the same shared vision that is repeated and reinforced each week at our regular chorus rehearsal.

Tony reminds us that there is no magic pill. There is no easy solution. It all takes time and hard work. It all starts with the determined effort of each individual member. You have to watch and critique rehearsal videos, you have to spend more personal mirror-time running the contest set. You have to learn your choreo and music. You have to become a better singer and more inspired performer by doing the things that Tony asks us to do week in and week out. Not only will it bring our level up, but every gathering of the chorus will be a more and more enjoyable experience.

a Both the competition songs are songs of joy. Don’t show pain. Be believable all the time without the intermittent blank, tuned-out look. Smile. Show joy. Radiate joy to the audience and to all the judges in the pit.

Rehearsal Notes, April 21, 2014a The Early-bird choreo session started out a marathon four hours on the risers that was invigorating and educational. Ralph Brown conducted an excellent early-bird choreo session of numerous reps of “Strike Up The Band.” Each opportunity resulted in more precision and greater confidence. Thanks Ralph. Tony continued the rehearsal with instructive enthusiasm. We talked a lot about developing stamina --- by the way, having it is always good.

a Stamina is equivalent to how well you can maintain ‘resonant breathing.’ If you sing with good resonance, with lifted cheek bones, forward uplifted sound, keeping the throat open and relaxed while breathing, you will have a better chance at building stamina and less fatigue. Not only will you sound better, you will also be able to sing with more energy and you will even look good while singing.

a Don’t let the song be in the driver’s seat. Show that you are in control with consistent breathing space and confident delivery.

a Spirit vs. Volume. Louder is not better. More volume does not produce better sound if you don’t have good physical technique or a pleasing tone. Making the sound louder but still produced by poor technique does not fix it. At one point, Tony suggests to the basses to “sprinkle the salt in, don’t pour out the whole salt shaker.” Context: “The Lord lift up the light” in The Lord Bless. Bass light became bass right.

a Smile and be Involved: Believability comes in places where you are not singing. Must be engaged all the time, particularly when not singing. Empty-look brown outs destroy believability and send a mixed message. Practicing in front of mirror and watching the rehearsal videos will help, and will show you what the audience sees. Default singer’s face for HoH: lifted cheek bone smile.

Rehearsal Notes, April 28, 2014a Congratulations to Dan Deignan for receiving the President’s Award. Dan challenges the chorus to share his award by practicing the competition set two times this week in front of a mirror.

a Quartets with HOH affiliation participating in this weekend’s convention ... All the best to “Define Four,” “Impact,” “Main Street,” and “Lunch Break!!!”

a Throughout our contest set and show sets ... show joy. Big joyful, involved face all the time, but particularly during non-singing time. This is especially at the end of both the verse to “I’ll Be Seeing You” and the intro to “Strike Up the Band.”

a Competition on the risers. Be that guy! Be the best guy on the risers that everyone looks at. Smile with confidence and energy. Don’t let down during the entire competition set while on stage.

a Energy bar and water. Stay hydrated! Since we are the last chorus to compete, an energy bar may give you that added boost. Double check the contest pattern to see how it will affect your meal schedule for the day. Work to eliminate distractions before we even get to the convention by being prepared.

a Things to remember. Bring uniform. Tux with black vest, gold tie, gold hanky. Meet Friday night in Vista Room C&D, 30 mins after the quartet order for Saturday night is announced. Sat. morning, meet in Capri Room 9:15 a.m. Be on time as we are on a schedule. Every minute will be used. Bring registration name tag.

Rehearsal Notes, May 5, 2014. a Congratulations to the Heralds of Harmony. Successful performance, successful weekend, complete with a blue ribbon, a handsome trophy, and a spectacular “Full Tony Eclipse.” Awesome!! We have made a lot of progress in six months. The judges are even beginning to notice that the Heralds are no longer an all-bass chorus!!

a The landing airplane. As your notes descend, you still need to keep lifting just like an airplane coming in for a landing. Even when you are coming down, you have to keep your nose up. If you accentuate the direction you are going, without lift, you will crash and burn. Always need plenty of lift.

a Hear the next interval. Always think about where you are headed. Prepare your mechanism for where you are going to. Prepare your mechanism for where you are going to be singing, not where you have been.

a “Drunken Sailor.” Tenors and leads. Poo(p). (Silent “p”)

a “Star-Spangled Banner.” Learn by next week. Listen twice a day, you will have it. Listen four times a day, you will own it.

a Early-bird choreo (6:15 p.m.) every rehearsal until show time.

a Continue to prepare “God Bless the USA” from pickup to ms 46, Drunken, Show Me, “Twilight Time,” “Tonight,” The Lord Bless You, “Armed Forces Medley,” “Slow Boat,” “Smile,” “God Bless America,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and Strike.

Rehearsal Notes, May 12, 2014a Excellent rehearsal Monday night with everyone focused on making music together. Tony says we were on top of it.  Each song had a “bang” factor. There was a special moment in each song we sang.  “That’s barbershop right there!!!”

a Yoked together. Tony’s reference to ‘our sound now’ is clearly an indication that we have chosen to improve and get better together.  Qualifying and singing two songs off-paper in one week is nothing short of amazing and an excellent testament that we are ‘yoked together’ to get better. Our hard work is beginning to pay off and give us even more momentum. Our combined efforts, standards, goals, dedication, commitment, and aspirations determine the direction we are headed. That direction is limited only by how well we work together and how much we encourage each other.

a Octaves. Lining up octaves. Training our ears. Figure out those points where you are singing an octave with another part. These are beacon points, giveaway points, where it should be easy to tune. Need to be lifting and singing your part and matching octaves precisely. Circle those points on your music where octaves occur. Make sure you are matching those octaves in tune. “Open your ears to things that matter.”

a Clean and clear intervals in “Armed Forces Medley.” Arpeggios. Written and meant to be sung with precision.

a Parachute. Another descriptive image of soft palate lift with plenty of dome. Needed by all parts when ascending or descending the register. More parachute or dome lift means less shrill, harsh or closed sounds.

a Next week preparation: All show songs and choreo. Early-bird choreo at 6:15 p.m. Monday, May 19.

Dave Roberts, Phylllis & Jack Greenfield, and Steve Matheson

Jack Greenfield (Heralds of Harmony Alumni and supporter) is a strong and active advocate of Hospice and aging Ameri-cans with the Committee on Aging. He and wife, Phyllis, were honored at a reception and luncheon on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, when inducted into the Dunedin Senior Hall of Fame. The long list of contributions, selfless hours of volunteering and supporting the growth and spirit to the Community of Dunedin throughout their 44-year residency are remarkable. Congratulations to Jack and Phyllis! (Photo-graphed with Heralds of Harmony President, Dave Roberts, and V.P. Marketing & Public Relations, Steve Matheson. )
