Awards & Installation

President’s AwardDave Roberts

For the President’s Award: Unfortunately, President Larry Clapp was unable to attend the banquet because he was home with the flu. Chuck Steiner presented the President’s Award on his behalf. Since Larry was unable to attend, here’s how he planned to pres-ent the award himself.....

“For the Bob Morrissey Memorial President’s Award, one guy kept coming to mind. He’s booked us in thousands of dollars worth of shows. He chaired the Nominations Committee again. He’s worked most of the RJS games. With John Pennington, he helped bring Tony on board, and has beenoneofTony’sadvisorssincethen(totheextentthatTonyneeds advisors!)He’s been a motivating factor -- that’s the clean version; I could also say shit kicker -- at many of our Board Meetings, encouraging us -- sometimes nicely, sometimes not so much! -- to act instead of talk. And last but certainly not least, he’s been my mentor from the first time I joined the Heralds, and throughout my Presidency.

This guy has always put the Heralds first, and I’ve always done my besttoliveuptohisexampleandmakehimproud.

I very much regret not being present to give this award to Dave Roberts in person!”

“While there were so many people that have done amazing things for the chorus and me in 2012, Ralph Brown was the obvious choice for this year’s director’s award. His amazing consistency and preparedness whether having days of notice or five minutes notice has been invaluable to me. When it comes to working the overall product of our performance, what Ralph brings to the chorus is extremelyimportant.Beingthefinalwordinhowwelookandwhenwe do what we do along with having ‘follow up’ reference materials available to the members makes his contribution second to none. Beyond that, his demeanor in front of the chorus is always positive and encouraging. He challenges them, but does it with humility and care for the members as well as the performance. He epitomizes the kind of leadership we are looking for by practicing what he preaches. Thank you Ralph for all you do and continue to do for the betterment of the Heralds of Harmony. I look forward to your continued contribution in the years to come.”

As y’all know, Steve Matheson has been tireless in his drive to help the Heralds succeed at Raymond James. He signs people up, he organizes the booth, he works the booth, and on top of that he

coordinates with the Levy Restaurants staff. It’s no small task, and he’s done it without complaint — at least, none to me! His wife Sheri might tell a different tale! I don’t remember now how he got the job, if he volunteered or if the Board pushed it on him, but regardless, he’s done a great job. - —Larry Clapp, President

Marty Vandenberghe got hold of what we hope is a fitting tribute to the work Steve has done for the Tampa Chapter. That

tribute, a referee shirt from Levy Restaurants, was presented to Steve at the Annual Installation and Awards Banquet on Monday, January 14, 2013.

Bill Kendig is originally from Philly. He remembers singing do-wop on the corner in the 1950’s! A Marine for 4 years and a Vietnam veteran, Bill has a daughter, Tracy, who is 28 years old, and he feels is the sweetest young woman a father could hope for. In the 70’s, Bill played guitar/harmonica to songs he himself had written, and sang with some rock bands. He settled down in the 80’s and worked for Ford Electronics for 20 years. As far as Barbershop goes, Bill’s father-in-law sang with the North Pennsmen Chorus (director, Chuck Lower), and when they announced guest night he thought he would give it a try. He was at rehearsal for 10 minutes and couldn’t wait to get started. Bill quickly became a board member, and over the next15 years: served on the board for 4 years, was chapter president, a Mid-Atlantic District Area counselor for 3 years, Membership VP for 5 years (11 Men of Note), and BOTY 1992 & 1997. When asked about his most memorable events, Harmony University stands out (I get that a lot!), singing tags with Moe Rector and hanging out with Joe Connelly one afternoon. Bill was brought to his knees when he learned a tag: “My

Father, My Friend, My Dad”. He left the auditorium and cried for a half hour. Bill’s dad died when he was only 6 years old, and that was the first time he let it all hang out. His most humorous moment was when his quartet was singing “Wait til the Sun Shines Nellie” at the chapter show. Second time thru ,they sang in Pennsylvania Dutch, (that’s his heritage) it was very funny, but on the line “the boy drew near, kissed away each tear” he gave the Bass a big kiss, unrehearsed, and he swatted Bill sending his glasses flying across the stage. Hilarious. Bill’s hobbies now are playing Folk/Blues with friends, singing with a gospel barbershop group, and lots of golf. He is looking forward to catching up and knowing the whole repertoire in Baritone (after 25 years as a lead). His advice to new Heralds... “Be 100% committed!” h

Getting to Know a HeraldBill Kendig

As Seen On TVAGAIN!by Roxanne Clapp, Editor

The folks over at Good Day Tampa Bay must have really enjoyed their visit from the Heralds in De-cember. They aired them again on December 24th and Christmas morning! They sang Winter Wonder-land on one of those days, and sadly I missed the other day, so I’m not sure which song it was but I know it was awesome! :) h

Tony-ism“Love ya, mean it”

He really does love ya, but you just did something that really ticked him off, so

don’t do it again!

Recognize these Guys?!Me either!!

Some of the fellas from the chorus heard Tony say he wanted more dark haired members on the risers. So when they came back from Christmas break that’s just what they gave him!!

“HERALDS” appears on the side of Tony’s new blue bonnet!

It seems Tony reminds Billy Bob of some football coaches he’s had in the past; in his manner & style. So, for a “FUNNY” he presented him with an Official “HOH Football Helmet” for rehearsals, maybe some performances, and especially for his Fantasy Foot-ball!

In case some of you are unaware, “Billy Bob” is Bill Weatherford.

Tony looked real good with That Blue Bonnet on ! ! !

Football Foolery

Psst... I think Tony meant younger fellas, not really old guys with dark hair!

FROm THE HISTORIAN

From our files, on May 17, 1945, forty-four men were invited to an organizational meeting at the Tampa Terrace Mezzanine. The stationery letterhead was ‘General Auto Supply Co., Inc., Marion Street at Tyler, Tampa 1, Florida.’ The actual letterhead is very interesting in that what does an auto supply businessreallydoin1945?And,itexplainsit.On May 29, 1945, the Tampa 1 Chapter was chartered with forty-five men. The ‘history’ says that these men were invited to sing in the first Florida Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.

They were invited. What they found at this meeting was “fun.” And, forty-five joined the organization. At our January 7 rehearsal, Ryan Killeen, who was visiting from the Harmony Foundation, said during his talk, the silver bullet to membership growth is to “just share our hobby.” We can thank our lucky stars that Bob Aldrich, way back in 1945, decided to ‘just share his hobby’ and now each of us in the Tampa Chapter can appreciate his gift. It is strange how a message in our history resonates in today’s world.

Just share our hobby.

Chapter Historian, Dave Roberts with Harmony Foundation’s Ryan Killeen.

In RemembranceJim Walker

Former Heralds of Harmony member Jim Walker, passed away on Christmas Day.

Jim sang with the Heralds for many years, although he wasn’t active at the time of

his passing. He was the choral director at Florida College for over 40 years.

Last month’s Winning Caption

This past month, when teaching the chapter presidents at the Leadership Academy in Ocala, I asked them what were their objectives for 2013? Your president, Mr. Clapp, quickly spoke up with 1. To sing better 2. Increase members 3. Increase revenueHis fellow chapter presidents were impressed and so was I. What does this have to do with the Groupanizer Guy? Last month, this article described the importance of the web site in chapter communication and our web site will help Larry in attaining his objectives. To sing better – this is Tony’s bailiwick; but the site can quickly make new music and learning files available for instant access to our members. Our “Finale Expert” and Librarian can quicklymake changes for Tony and get them quickly posted. Rehearsal videos are available for review andour“ChorusChoreoExpert”canpostchoreoscripts and videos to web site. Yes, to sing better, go to the web site for the latest. To increase members – Visitors to the site can find our rehearsal site, chorus contact numbers, rehearsal schedules, show performances, information on our director, our association with other arts organizations, and many other positive attractions. The web site contains lists of prospective members which are used for recruiting purposes. The web site IS supporting the objective to increase members. To increase revenue – The web site contains a special section for ‘Our Sponsors’ or those who have provided us with revenue. The site provides recognition for those sponsors as a way of ‘thanking’ them for their support. The ‘changing banners’ recognizes these show sponsors for supporting our revenue objective. The site provides advertisements for our Annual
