(Some dates still to be confirmed)

I know everyone has heard by now that our performance at this fall’s contest brought outstanding results — 1,045 to-tal points for an average of 87.1%. This is the highest total score ever achieved by the Heralds and we are currently seated 8th for the International contest in Orlando. Congratulations to the Tony and Music Team for bringing this

experience to the Chorus. Adding to this year’s District Championship, along with the International contest in Las Vegas, winning fall contest has made for a very satisfying competition accomplishment.

What’s next? We have four very important performanc-es in the next two months that are critical. Singing two songs in contest is not the same challenge as performing the Christmas package which contains seventeen Chorus songs. We strive to perform each song, each show, at a higher level than the previous one, and there’s nothing more satisfying than delivering a great performance.

The “Friends of the Heralds” campaign is progressing nicely with generous donations from our Chapter mem-bers, and our alumni and patrons. This is a vote of con-fidence in the Heralds organization and shows active participation in our future. Thank you for sharing.November is our planning month for 2018 and beyond. We will be taking some time, as a Board, to reflect on activities, plan them and fund them. Most important-ly, there are activities from the Secretary and Treasurer that are critical to our continued existence as a Chapter. Various licenses are checked, updated, and filed with State agencies and the Society. Ralph Brown and Bill Glasgow continue to do outstanding work and we can’t thank them enough.

At this same meeting, we will look beyond 2018 matching critical resources to our future endeavors. When will we compete again after 2018 Orlando International? Interna-tional conventions will be in Salt Lake City — 2019, Los Angeles — 2020, Cleveland — 2021, Charlotte — 2022, and Louisville — 2023. It can’t be emphasized enough the importance of having a long-range target or goal to maintain long-range focus. For the years that we don’t compete, what exciting set of activities can we anticipate?

For example, 2016 had six exciting shows with the Toast of Tampa. Perhaps the word ‘critical’ is overworked, but long-range planning is ‘critical’ to the long-range health of the Chapter. There is excitement in having a well thought-out view of the future. Each Board member must share in this responsibility.

Again, my opinion — the Heralds are in a very favorable status as a Chapter with an outstanding music program, explosive membership growth, and a continued focus on our financial resources. All this, and it is fun to be a Herald!

Paul StilesPaul has sung with the Heralds for almost 4 years and has been a Barbershopper since 2005. He has been on the faculty at USF for 22 years, and enjoys traveling and working with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Did you have any singing experience before joining the Heralds? I sang throughout grade/high school and college. Upon starting grad school I kind of stopped music activities. My

wife encouraged me to get back into singing/perform-ing a little over 10 years ago.

What is your favorite thing about singing with the Heralds? The camaraderie every Monday and working to sing/sound better. Ringing chords and blending voices into an amazing sound is icing on the cake.

What’s something that other Heralds would be surprised to learn about you?I’m the youngest of 8 kids in my family.

If you shop on amazon.com you can sign up for the amazonsmile program, and designate the Heralds as your charity of choice. Then anytime you make a purchase on amazon, they make a donation to us! No cost to you, and a donation to us: win win!

To sign up, visit https://smile.amazon.com/ and sign in to your amazon account.

Then you’ll be asked to choose the charity you want to support: unfortunately you can’t search for Heralds of Harmony as we are under the name of our Society. But you can easily find us by entering “59-6173078” in the search field.

Hit the Select button and from now on any amazon purchase you make will help the Heralds. Thanks in advance!!

One of the many benefits of being part of the Sunshine District is getting to watch a World-Class show of the quartets from Florida! On the same show were Current Gold Medalist Main Street, Silver Medalist Signature, 4th Place Bronze Medalist Throwback and 11th Place finishers Rooftop Records!

Congratulations to Easy Street who won the right to represent the Sunshine District at the Senior International Quartet Contest in January. They also took home the Most Improved Quartet award and won Third Place in the District Contest.

“Friends of the Heralds” (FOH) is a fund-raising program that is an important part of the Heralds yearly operating budget. Our mission is to preserve and further develop a cappella singing through musical excellence. FOH was established to help sustain Heralds of Harmony financial needs as we increase the number of singers on the risers and continue to improve our musical performance.

We are a non-profit organization supported by our perfor-mance ticket sales, dues and grants. Under the direction of Tony De Rosa, we will continue to offer the best musical and entertainment experience for our audience. In 2015, we placed in the top ten worldwide at the International Chorus Competition of the Barbershop Harmony Society. In 2017, the Chorus competed at the International level in Las Vegas and received our highest score ever.

The Heralds are poised to continue this significant growth and progression. FOH allows members, Alumni, as well as our friends, family and barbershop fans, to assist us on our musical journey and support our financial needs. If you would like to help in our endeavor with a tax-deductible contribution, please contact Dave Roberts at [email protected], 813-546-8953.

If you wish to write a check, please send to: Heralds of Har-mony; Treasurer - Bill Glasgow; P. O. Box 274076; Tampa, Florida 33688-4076.

We wish to thank the donors listed on this page for their generous contributions in 2016.

Preparing for PerformancesPeople are sometimes frightened of over-preparing because they think the material will somehow get stale. But that shouldn’t be a worry. Every time you perform, it changes: the atmosphere in the room is different, the people watching you aren’t the same. By preparing as much as possible, you’ll have the ability to deal with anything that happens, you’ll have more confidence and you’ll enjoy it more. Being in a show is an exhilarating experience but it’s also a big responsibility: you want to feel reliable.

Remembering lyrics can be hard work, and each person responds to things differently, so it really depends on what works for you. Start by reading the lyrics out loud to yourself and then consider them both by themselves and with the music. In order to make them stick, you have to make your own detailed analysis of what the words mean.

The music won’t let you stop and think while you’re performing, and there will be a whole lot of other things happening on stage that can make you forget what you’re doing. So repeat the lyrics while doing something else, such as throwing and catching a ball, walking round the supermarket, cooking or doing the dusting.

An excerpt from Music Guide to performing: Singing by Mary Hammond, Karen Rabinowitz and Dominic Alldis.https://www.theguardian.com/music/2009/may/10/tips-stage-per-formance-singing
