ENERGY ISSUES – Sample Q Paper 1

(a) Explain the meaning of:

(i) renewable energy(ii) fossil fuels. (4)

(b) Study Figure 8, energy production in two countries, 1994.

Compare the pattern of energy production in Country A with that in Country B, andcomment on the contribution each is making to global warming. (5)

(c) With reference to one or more schemes, explain the benefits of using appropriatetechnology to generate power in less developed countries. (6)

(d) Some housing and transport systems in the United Kingdom are being designed toreduce energy use.Discuss how the importance of such schemes is reducing the country’s contribution toglobal warming. (15)

ENERGY ISSUES – Sample Q Paper 2

a) Study Figure 9 and Figures 10(a) and 10(b) which give details of therenewable energy generated as a percentage of total electricity in the UK,1990 to 2005.

Describe the changes in the UK’s generation of electricity from renewable sources between 1990 and 2005 and suggest why these changes tookplace. (6)

(b) Some communities in this country have welcomed the development of wind farms in their local areas. Others have resisted the building of wind farms.

Suggest reasons for these different attitudes. (5)

(c) Name a major transnational corporation involved in energy productionand/or distribution. Outline its role in a range of countries at different stagesof development. (4)

(d) With reference to any two countries compare their attempts to manage thesupply of energy to meet their long term needs. (15)
