Big Hero 6 vs Interstellar

A genre normally has a set list of possible themes in there narratives. Science fiction has a few

strong themes running throughout the history of this recently popular genre. This genre was not

popularized until 1950’s. Many people always mistakenly Science Fiction and Fantasy as one genre

with only a slight difference between them. So, what is Science Fiction? It is a genre of fiction that

mostly based on futuristic events and a world of technology and modernization even more improved

than the current one, which has yet to exist. It can also be known as the literature of ideas because of

the concept used in the movie. Watching sci-fi movie is like escaping from your tedious day as the

possibilities are endless, so, sci-fi films can never be dry, cliched or boring. This genre is male

dominant, because with sci-fi, there will almost certainly be action packed. Recently, I watched Big

Hero 6 and Interstellar. Even though both movies are same genre, they got many differences- setting,

characteristic of main character, plot and function of the robot in the movie.

One of the major differences between Big Hero 6 and Interstellar is the setting of the movie. In

Big Hero 6, the movie was take placed at a beautiful rendered setting of San Fransokyo, a delightfully

colorful mash up of Tokyo and San Francisco. They come out with a design of San Francisco with a

Japanese aesthetic. The spread out topography of the city by the bay is very much the same but the

rich layering and sense of detail is more like Tokyo. There was a really amazing mix of the city

represented, including the Golden Gate Bridge with traditional Japanese accents. In the other hand,

in the intro of Interstellar movie, the movie was set on a farm somewhere in America that has been

ravage by an environmental disaster called blight. The farmers only grow one of the planet remaining

sustainable crop which is corn. Besides that, the movie also set at many mysterious planet. The first

world they visit is a planet covered by a one foot deep ocean and skyscraper sized wave. The second

planet that they visited is fully covered with ice.

Next is the characteristic of main character of the movie. In Big Hero 6, the main character is 14

years old boy named Hiro Hamada. He is a young boy with intelligence far beyond his age. Because

of this, he can be rather brazen and cocky especially when he was seen to be bored during his bot

fight with Mr. Yama. Hiro’s genius fully apparent as he readily stunt the renowned college professor

with his invention of million of mind controlled microbot that can merge together to construct any

imagined form. Meanwhile, in Interstellar, the main character is Matthew McConaughey act as

Cooper, a trained NASA pilot with an engineering background. He really proficient in using technology

Page 4: Eng assignment1

as he is the pilot of the interstellar expedition. He also very intelligence but in difference way from

Hiro. He use his intelligence to escape from danger. In one of the scene, the Endurance has neither

enough fuel to travel back to Earth, nor to reach the third planet. Thus to save Brand and their

mission, he jettisons first TARS into the ubiquitous black hole and then himself. As a result, Brand is

left to complete the mission.

In addition, both movies also possessed different plot. The plot of Big Hero 6 is more relax and

amusing. In one scene , while edging through Hiro’s bedroom, his bottom sweep the bookshelf clean.

It is kind of old-fashioned physical comedy while squeezing through human size space involves much

careful shuffling, stooping and sometimes a partial deflation. Besides, this movie’s plot is also familiar

and predictable. After Hiro find out about the mysterious and menacing Kabuki masked man, who is

terrorizing San Fransokyo with Hiro’s microbots. He, Baymax along and his tech savvy friends try to

stop that Kabuki masked man. At the end, they managed to protect the city from the bad guy.

Conversely, in the three-hour epic Interstellar movie from the ever-serious Christopher Nolan is quite

long and convoluted. There are a lot of physics involved in the movie. One of it is they have to solve

the gravity. This movie also tell about the fifth dimensional portal that allow Cooper to communicate

with Murph along with any point of her time line. The fifth dimension really left people with question.

Lastly is the function of the robot in the movie. As for Tadashi and his friends, they us technology

to help other. For example, Baymax is the personal health companion that was invented by Tadashi.

His goal is to help improve health care around the world, basically to use his creation and genius for

the better of humanity. To provide him with his programming, and overall personality, Baymax was

given a special chip with Tadashi's inscriptions, which makes him the lovable robot he truly is. TARS,

the main robot featured in interstellar look nothing like a human. TARS is portrayed as a complex tool

that perform a role similar to another crew mate on the ship. He is programmed with witty, sarcastic

and humorous trait to make him a better companion.

In a conclusion, Big Hero 6 and Interstellar differ in setting, characteristic of the main character,

plot and the function of robot in the movie. I really enjoyed watching both movies as they have very

interesting story line with a great ending. Both movie are family friendly, so we can watch it together

with our family members or friends. I hope that this kind of movie can be produce more so that we

can use our free time with interesting, amusing and enjoyable movie to watch.
