Proud sponsors of Freemasons Victoria in its 125th year.

Welcome to another issue of engage! Newsletter. Interestingly, there is yet another piece of correspondence doing the rounds over this last fortnight, the first output from a newly formed

group (no doubt inspired by the Don Chipp philosophy of “keep the bastards honest”), and while someone has now put their name to the document, it largely contains all of the ‘Dorothy Dix’ doom, gloom, conspiracy theories and suspicions contained in the previous anonymous document.

Am I being too cynical by highlighting such a coincidence? The lengthy fable contained therein would do merit to Series 6, Episode 12 of The Simpsons. The episode was titled ‘Homer the Great’ and referred to the Stonecutters. The episode is as credible reflection of Freemason-ry as is this latest piece of work from one of our Brethren. So here’s my comments Brethren, what are you doing to put a stop to this nonsense – having received an unsolicited email – have you objected to it? Have

you challenged the content? Have you asked to be removed from that particular email list? Do you re-ally want to see/hear such tripe? Is that why you joined Freemasonry?

Moving on, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the making of Series 1 and 2 of Freemasons: The Inside Story which concluded last Monday evening. The awareness and positive perception of Freemasonry that this show has created among an enormous viewing audience is incredible and its effect will continue to be felt for some time. We now have a tremendous library of footage that can and will be used in various ways as part of upcoming collateral. While there were production costs, the vast majority of resource was volunteers, supplemented by members of the Grand Secretariat. Congratulations to all involved – this was an historic ground-breaking initiative launched by MWBro. Bob Jones PGM.

The final presentation of the philanthropy proposal was conducted at Warragul during the week, concluding a series of 16 such presentations held all across the State. I must thank the President of the Board of General Purposes and the Grand Treasurer for the amazing amount of time, effort, dedication and commitment they have put into these presentations in order to ensure that you are all well informed.

Proud sponsors of Freemasons Victoria in its 125th year.

Freemasons Victoria has recently established a valuable partnership with the Blue Ribbon Foundation.

The Foundation aims to keep the memories alive of Victorian Police killed in the line of duty, through the support of worthwhile community projects within the State.

Neil Soullier, Chief Executive of the Blue Ribbon Foundation is available to visit your lodge during the months of August and September to explain more about the Foundation and how you can get involved in some of the activities it hosts. Please contact Gabrielle Forman at [email protected] to register your interest.

Ever wanted to know more about the Blue Ribbon Foundation?

• Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies WBro. Myles King (PJGD)

• Grand Pursuivant WBro. Graham Berry (PGStdB)

• Senior Grand Deacons - WBro. Gavin Howard (PJGD) - WBro. Steeve Moutia (PJGD)

Victoria has an enviable reputation for the excellence of its ceremonial work not only in Australia but throughout the world. The Ceremonial Team is entrusted to perform the timeless rituals and ceremonies which are part of the proud tradition of the Craft.

The personal development, and skills learned and perfected during training and throughout the year, as well as the friendships made and reinforced, are lifelong benefits which ensue from participation in a Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team. This is a wonderful time in your Masonic career.

Stay tuned for fortnightly updates throughout the year in engage! Newsletter.

On the last weekend of July the Collingwood Masonic Centre opened its doors to the public as an official site of Melbourne Open Houses 2014. The Centre was open on both the Saturday and Sunday and was the first Ma-sonic Centre in Melbourne to participate.

The official visitor count was 445 people, but it is believed the numbers exceeded this as groups of 20-30 people arriving off the train were hard to count. Volunteering members welcomed visitors and answered all sorts of questions about Freemasonry. In the rear yard there was a BBQ offering sausages and pancakes, with tea and coffee and soft drinks available for purchase. On the Sunday there were scones and cakes.

The Centre was set up with chequered pavement, chairs and collars, along with an electronic display on the renovation and history of the building. Mannequins dressed in regalia we also on display.

All 445 visitors were keen to see and learn about the Lodge room. Damien Hudson, of the Collingwood Lodge, Bro. Nick Clifton and WBro. Ben Quick provided explanations but the focus of most of the questions was about the Craft.

Open Houses Melbourne was a fantastic opportunity to engage with a completely different and new audience and create a favourable impression of the Craft and smash some misconceptions and doubts about Freemasonry. Many visitors were shocked to hear how much the organisation contributes to the Victorian Community.

RWBro. John Molnar reported some very positive feedback from visitors and WBro. Mike Halstead-Lyons reported that he was able to move some visitors to tears of pride telling them about Freemasonry and what their grandfather and father would have been involved in.

This was a great opportunity to unite Freemasons in a project to engage with the wider public.

New Honour Boards were erected in the main passage-way of the Kyneton RM Begg Aged Care Facility in August, in recognition of the support that the Kyneton Lodge, Freemasons Public Charitable

Foundation and Freemasons Victoria Board of Benevolence have provided for more than seven years.

In 2007 Kyneton Lodge No. 192 hosted a musical afternoon at the Sacred Heart College in Kyneton, entertainment courtesy of the Freemasons Victoria Choir, The Grand Lodge Ensemble, The Bendigo Cornish Choir, The Kyneton Rotary Choir, along with a couple of Scottish Pipers and a local guitarist.

This event was organised to raise money to purchase a much needed Oxygen Concentrator valued at $3500.00 for the Facility. Approximately $2200.00 was raised and the Freemasons Victoria Board of Benevolence matched that sum.

In 2013 the Kyneton Lodge took on another project to raise money to purchase three mobile hoists at a cost of $6000 each. Support for this project came from The Highlanders Masonic Association

together with two other district lodges.

Kyneton Lodge raised just over $3500 which was matched, this time by the Freemasons Public Charitable Foundation enabling the Lodge to purchase one hoist.

Kyneton Lodge has for many years supported a number of other local organisations and charities especially Camp Quality in the very early days to a sum of $10,000.

Bro. Andrew Wilson was born on 18 February 1916 and spent his early life in New Zealand before coming to Australia where he excelled as a Cabinet Maker.

Andrew was initiated into Lodge Merlynston on 3 August 1949, was passed to the Second Degree in 29 November 1949 and raised to the Third Degree on 29 May 1950. Andrew was a foundation member of Lodge Ocean Grove in 1966.

During his forty years as a member of Lodge Ocean Grove, Andrew held the Office of Treasurer during the period of extensive fundraising to build a new Lodge room in Ocean Grove and proved that his handling of financial matters was of the highest standard.

Although the funds raised did not build a new Lodge room at Ocean Grove it has provided a very nice complex at Queenscliff.

Andrew was held in such high esteem that although he did not go through the Chairs of the Lodge, he was afforded the honour of Past Grand Tyler in 2002 and now joins a very elite group of Freemasons who can boast a membership of 65 years.

Come and visit the Kyenton Museum on Sunday 7 September for a Walk, Talk & Tea which is running in conjunction with the Museum’s current exhibition Freemasonry Unlocked. Departing from the Kyneton Museum at 2pm the walk will begin from Zetland Lodge to look through this heritage listed building with its fine wall murals, then to Kyneton Lodge to unlock some of the mystery and history of the Lodges. The tour will conclude at Kyneton Museum to view the exhibition and to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea.

The Melbourne Youth Orchestra is back from an incredible tour of Christ-church, New Zealand and a once in a

life time opportunity to perform with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Melbourne Youth Music provided a wonderful outdoor screening of this tour and the Orchestra’s performance at Federation Square on Saturday 23 August to MYM’s members of the Board of

Management, Arts Victoria, invited guests and public onlookers.

Chief Executive Officer of MYM, Dorian Jones announced the screening saying that the trip was a great opportunity for the more than 50 young musicians to play among professionals and experience contributing within a world-renowned Orchestra.

The screening also features the Melbourne Youth Orchestra members’ tour experience with individual and group interviews”, Dorian said.

The performance, Gustav Mahler’s Masterpiece Symphony No.2 in C Minor “Resurrection” represented the resilience and rebuilding of Christchurch in the wake of 2011devastating earthquakes.

‘Mahler2’ is a sublime musical experience, building to one of the most transcendent musical finales ever composed. Performed to a sold-out Christchurch audience and receiving a spontaneous standing ovation, the concert was an artistic success and a transformative experience for the Melbourne Youth Orchestra.

VWBro. Ron Davis PGIWkgs celebrated 50 years of active participation in the Craft in June of this year.

Ron was initiated on 10 June 1963 and served in all offices, culminated by his installation as Master of Argyle Lodge No. 105 on 11 October 1980. Ron returned for a further year as Master of the Lodge on 8

October 2005 and again the following year. The Lodge flourished under his Mastership.

Ron was advanced into the Gippsland Mark Lodge No. 105 on 18 November 1965 and served in most Offices. Ron rose to be Past Grand Standard Bearer and Master of Gippsland Mark Lodge in October 2011 and again in 2012.

He spent 33 years in Chapter, rising to the rank of First Principal in 2008 and again in 2009 with promotion to Past Grand Inspector of Workings in 2013.

With 30 years in Gippsland Sovereign Chapter Rose Croix, and currently First General of the Gippsland Chapter Rose Croix, Ron has spread his wings far and wide also becoming a foundation member of Tambo Sovereign Chapter of Rose Croix in Bairnsdale.

Ron has spent 29 years in Ark Mariner and 19 years in St Andrew Sovereign Council No. 29 with elevation to the 32nd degree.

A Foundation Member with five years’ service with Old Gippstown Lodge, the

Gippsland Council No. 68 and Treasurer of the Latrobe Valley Masonic Centre Inc. round out the many years of dedication given by Ron.

Ron came from a large family of eight children. He married his wife Joy in Rosedale in 1967 and had three children who have been very supportive of Ron’s Masonic Career.

It’s hard to believe that Ron would have time for anything not involving Freemasonry and supporting Joy with her legendary scone cooking skills, but he is a keen gardener and tourer, the type that needs to see what’s over the next horizon!

Ron started his work life as a shop assistant at the age of 14 but fairly soon graduated to truck driving which became his life, with many trucks passing through his hands over the years and a wonderful lot of stories to tell. Ron regaled us with some of these, together with a photographic display of all of his trucks on the occasion of his 50 year jewel presentation.

Austin Health is seeking willing volunteers to take part in the

Tomorrow Study, a research project aimed at finding out more about the causes of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s Disease refers to the early phase of the Disease in which an otherwise healthy-minded person experiences a gradual, progressive decline in thinking ability. This decline is significant enough to be noticed but not severe enough to interfere with daily life or the ability to function independently.

The Tomorrow Study seeks to learn more about the genetic risk for developing the impairment due to Alzheimer’s Disease and whether an investigational medication might prove effective in delaying the first symptoms of this condition.

You may be eligible to participate in this important study if you are aged between 65 and 83 years and are in good physical and mental health.

Participation in the study will require an interview with you about your medical history, a series of tests and a placebo/drug trial. Participants must not have a current diagnosis or history of cognitive impairment, dementia, a neurological or psychiatric disorder, or any other diagnosis that signifi-cantly affects cognitive performance. A follow up after six months will also be scheduled. Why should you, a healthy older individual, consider enrolling in the Tomorrow Study? You will be able to measure your cognitive health and help contribute to the understanding of how age and genetic factors affect the health of your mind.

Approximately 5,800 older adults will take part in this study at about 50 study centres in North America, Eu-rope, and Australia, and it is currently anticipated that the study will last approximately five years.

To learn more and to register your interest please call (03) 9496-2421 or visit: www.TOMMORROWStudy.com

WBro. Doug Merritt from Acacia Lodge of Geelong No. 913, presented Ruth Christian, Church Warden of Christ Church Geelong, with a cheque for $2000 for the Community Meals Program.

The donation was raised from this year’s “Acacia Scottish Night”, which is the Lodge’s main fundraising event held each January, and was matched by the Freemasons Victoria Board of Benevolence.

The Christ Church Community Meals Program provides free breakfast seven days a week throughout the year and an evening meal every Monday and Wednesday for the homeless, school children, street kids, people who need company as much as food, the unemployed, stranded travelers and families.

The meals program is run entirely by volunteers, sometimes with the assistance of students from different local schools. Approximately 150 hours of volunteer time is dedicated each to the program.

Approximately 18,000 substantial breakfasts are provided per year, served 365 days of the year, comprising hot drinks, toast, cereal, and a cooked breakfast.

On both Monday evening and Wednesday evening a two course meal is served, with surplus food available to take away.

Recently a medical clinic was established and staffed by medical practitioners and nurses who give their time at no cost. The clinic opens in the evenings when meals are provided.

Epworth HealthCare at a glance 2014 Philanthropy ReportThe Epworth Medical Foundation has just released it’s 2014 Philanthropy Report. The Report titled ‘Above and Beyond’ provides a snapshot of progress, milestones and key stories that have shaped the Hospital’s last twelve months. A few of these include:

25 years of excellence Epworth’s Emergency Department is celebrating 25 years of excellence in emergency medicine since it opened its doors in 1989.At that time it was Victoria’s first private, not-for-profit emergency department and, since then, it has achieved many more firsts. The strength of the department’s growth is a testament to the hard work of its staff.

Donations During the past year, the Foundation contributed more than $750,000 to ensure that patients across all areas of Epworth, in every hospital, had access to the most advanced cardiac equipment and resources. This was made possible because of donations.

A First for Victoria Epworth HealthCare recently became the only private hospital in Victoria to treat the heart condition ‘Atrial Fibrillation’ by using a dual methodology of both cryoblation and radiofrequency.Atrial Fibrillation occurs when the upper chambers of the heart fibrillate, resulting in a rapid and irregular heart beat. Blood is not pumped efficiently to the rest of the body, and this can cause heart palpatations, fatigue and shortness of breath.

In a tremendous milestone, Epworth cardiologist Dr Andrei Catanchin performed the first of these dual procedures in the Catheter Lab at Epworth Hospital in Richmond this year.
