Digging Deeper Digging Deeper Digging Deeper

On this fourth Sunday of Lent, we continue with our Sermon Series entitled Worn Pages. All of the Associate Pastors are sharing with us some of their favorite Bible

Passages. This week, we’re looking at one of my favorites, John 13:31-35. There’s no better place to discover what love is about than in the Gospel of John and the familiar teachings of Jesus. John 13:31-35 is a wonderful passage of Scripture. In it, Jesus sug-gests that the key to impacting our world on His behalf is love. He goes on to talk about the value of loving one another and the example that love is to the world around us.

Love is a popular word in our society. Our world is desperately seeking true love. There are all kinds of dating websites, personal classifieds, bars, clubs, and social organiza-tions. All of them promise “true love” or “real love.” But a classic country song by John-ny Lee rings true. Sometimes we end up, “Looking for love in all the wrong places…looking for love in too many faces.” The point is: We all crave love, but we have a hard time finding fulfilling and lasting love.

In our passage for this morning, the Lord is about to be betrayed. In fact, Judas had just left them. The Lord never threw Judas out. He never asked him to leave. It was Judas who left the Lord. What I find remarkable about Jesus, and this particular account, is that the Lord never tried to stop him. Jesus gave Judas the freedom to choose, to make his own decision. In spite of the fact that Jesus knew He was about to experience the worst forty-eight hours of His life, He never tried to stop Judas. How does He react instead? What does He do? Instead of reacting with scorn and indignation, the Lord reacts with confidence and sublimity. Instead of acting out, He gathers His little flock. Instead of being filled with anger, resentment, bitterness, and hatred, He is filled with compassion and love. Instead of allowing His emotions to get the best of Him, the Lord gives a new commandment: love one another.

How do you react in times of trial? With love? What are your first thoughts when facing evil? Are they of love or are they of revenge? It’s so easy to do just the opposite of “love one another.” In fact, it’s easy to reject someone, to cast them aside and throw them out of your life! “I don’t want to see you anymore.” “I don’t want anything more to do with you.” “Leave me alone.” The Lord taught His disciples a great lesson: You can leave Me, betray Me, insult Me, humiliate Me, beat Me, crucify Me, and kill me, but you will never change My love for you.

Nothing will ever change God’s love for you in Jesus Christ! The measure of love we offer others should always be as Christ loved us. Jesus’ command to love one another is not just an option to consider. It’s a “commandment.” Jesus is making it clear that love is a requirement if we want to be His disciples; it’s not an elective.

So, how is that working for you? Who is someone you need to love as Christ has loved you? How do you show Christ’s love to those around you? To your family, to your co-workers, to your neighbors? Jesus said, “They will know you are My disciples by your love.” In this season of Lent, share Christ’s love with the world!
