: About the Project
Associate Degree in Engineering
‘Building Better Pathways to Higher Education’Professor Ian Young, former Swinburne Vice-Chancellor
Students who transfer from a TAFE qualification to University have progression rates slightly above students who enter directly from Year 12.
The Associate Degree pathway allows students to mature and consolidate their understanding before entering the independent learning environment of University
Swinburne’s inter-sectoral expertise places it in an ideal position
Associate Degreejointly provided by
Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences, Higher Education Division
School of Engineering, TAFE Division

: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
Project Strategy
‘Engineering eLearning’ means both of the following:-
eLearning for the subject area: Engineering
adopting a systematic Engineering approach to the development of eLearning
This ‘Engineering eLearning’ mentality underpinned the project

Process of ‘Engineering eLearning’ – a brief overview
Where do we want to be?Generate a catalogue of well-articulated requirements
: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
Requirements Engineering (in a nutshell)
Where are we now?Analyse the existing educational scenarios with regard to
What do we do next?Generate recommendations and plans; design experiments
Documenting the above is called a ‘Requirements Specification’ – it’s not easy!
An appropriate strategy for enhancing learning scenariosis ‘Iterative, constructive, exploration’

Process of ‘Engineering eLearning’ – a brief overview
Group 1. what the degree is required to do for students
: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
Groups of requirements in the Requirements Catalogue:
Requirements concerning course aims & objectives, students’ competencies, learning outcomes.
Groups 2 & 3 what the various stakeholders are required to
do to support the degree
Derived from multiple obligatory sources:- Degree Accreditation Documents, Swinburne Graduate Attributes, Engineers Australia Competencies, VET Employability Skills.
Group 2. Derived from Engineering-specific sources; Engineers for the Future Report; CDIO Initiative
Group 3. Derived from discipline-neutral education research and internally from within the project.
Focus includes:- Curriculum Alignment Competencies (graduate attributes learning outcomes) Teaching and Learning Activities (including assessment) Evaluation issues

Curriculum Alignment (aka constructive alignment)
: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
This goal is extremely valuable but rarely (never) fully achieved
Intended Learning Outcomes
including integrationwith Graduate Attributes
Learning and Teaching Activities
Assessment
carefully aligned
This project pursued the above goal in partnership

The central role of well-articulated competencies
: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
Example from a taught unit. 1 module (of 8) has (e.g.,) 7 competencies
These comprehensive lists of competencies are more than just the academic’s good educational practice.
Clear competency statements provided a contract between the academic’s intentions and the
resource-developer’s targets for eLearning resources.
Well specified competency statements are what enabled the chosen
eLearning resources to be relevant.

A tiny example of exploiting eLearning

Expressing the learning scenario in Blackboard
ExploitingeLearningResourcesto supportthe learning
All Challengineering resources are delivered using simple web links.
Each of these resources actually uses a different type of technology (Video, pdf, Flash, Java) but all underlying
technical issues can be ignored by the teacher and the students.
The teacher’s time was spent designing the learning experience, not wrestling with technology. Students can simply ‘click-and-use’.

: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
Challengineering resources are pedagogically diverse
Note that terms like 'passive - consuming' are not derogatory. Watching an expert explain something is a great way to start understanding a concept but it is rarely sufficient.
Deeper understanding almost always requires further active engagement with the concept.

The eWarehouse metaphor
Challengineering Catalogue
Challengineering resources do not depend upon the catalogue
Staff are enouraged to raid the eWarehouse; take the links; and paste them into their own educational shop windows.
Staff are enouraged to construct their own lists of preferred eLearning resources; and to construct innovative contexts
Challengineering publishes pre-compiled lists of resources to support the modules taught within units, e.g., http://challengineering.com/catalog/maths
http://challengineering.com/catalog/physics/mechanics/dynamics
http://challengineering.com/catalog/materials
… several others; see http://challengineering/site/elresources/lists.html

: About the Products (Project Outcomes)
The project has cultivated a community of practice engaged in exploring ways of using online resources to support enhanced learning and teaching strategies
Community of Practice
Staff were supported during the project by face-to-face consultations and workshops
Ongoing support continues to be available via an online course on ‘Teaching with eLearning’ http://challengineering.com/teachwel
The online course Directly supports VET staff working on unit of competency TAEDEL501A ‘Facilitate eLearning’ (part of TAE10 - Training and Education Training package)
Community is supported by the easily acessible eLearning resources located on the Challengineering web site
