MSD Employees raise $110,000 to support community organizations

The 2016 MSD Cares annual-giving

campaign—under the leadership of

IT Director Tom Luckett—has raised

$110,000, which breaks all previous MSD Cares giving records.

Through this fund, employees provide support to charitable

programs with both a local and global reach. The charities

include Metro United Way; Fund for the Arts; Wednesday’s

Child; and Water Charities: Engineers Without Borders,

Louisville Water Foundation, Water for People and WaterStep.

The MSD Cares celebration was held at MSD’s Central

Maintenance Facility on December 2. Guest speakers from

each supported agency, as well as community leaders

and Louisville legends Derek Anderson and Darrell Griffith

spoke in praise of the success of this employee-supported

campaign.

Executive Director Tony Parrott, states “On behalf of MSD,

I would like to express my gratitude to all employees for

their support of these worthy organizations. Through MSD

Cares annual-giving campaign, we have an opportunity to

make a difference in our community and around the world.”

Storage basins will enhance the quality of local waterwaysStorage basins are part of MSD’s larger endeavor to prevent

sewage from overflowing into Louisville’s waterways.

Planned basins throughout our city are designed to

capture rainwater and sewage, which otherwise can

overwhelm the sewer system during rain events and flow

untreated into our waterways. These basins retain the

mixture of rainwater and sewage until the rain subsides

and capacity is available, then gradually release it back

into the sewer system. At that point, the water is conveyed

to a water quality treatment center, treated and returned

to our local streams or the Ohio River.

Rowan CSO Storage Basin—conceptual design phase

This underground-covered basin is planned for the Rowan

Street area. The interceptor route will be along Main Street

between 4th and 10th streets. The basin will offer the

public and the Ohio River protection from combined sewer

overflows during periods of heavy rain. Input from future

public meetings will help to determine the specific details

and aesthetics of the completed project.

Portland CSO Storage Basin—conceptual design phase

This underground-covered basin will be located in the

Lannan Park area. The basin will offer the public and the

Ohio River protection from combined sewer overflows

during periods of heavy rain. A public meeting to gain input

from the neighbors will take place on January 26, 2016,

6:30 pm at Neighborhood House, 201 N 25th Street.

Camp Taylor Sewer Rehabilitation Project enters final phaseThe construction contract for sewer rehabilitation in the

Camp Taylor area bounded by Taylor Avenue to the north,

Lee Avenue to the east, Cardinal Drive to the south and

Reservoir Avenue to the west has been approved. The

completion date for the entire Camp Taylor suite of projects

is December 31, 2017.

A large portion of the Camp Taylor neighborhood sanitary

sewers dates back to the early 1900s, when sewer lines were

built to serve the Camp Taylor U.S. Army training facilities.

Residential development took over the area after these

training facilities were closed. The greater part of this

development was undertaken without consistent planning

Southwestern Parkway CSO Storage Basin—

conceptual design phase

This underground-covered basin will offer the public and

the Ohio River protection from combined sewer overflows

during periods of heavy rain. The next public meeting

concerning this project is 6:30 PM on December 14 at

The Academy @Shawnee, 4001 Herman Street.

or today’s sewer design guidelines. The results—lines that are

too small, lines that run below structures and single property

service connections with more than one hookup—which

cause capacity related sewer overflows during rain events.

Completion of the Camp Taylor project will result in:

l Decrease sanitary sewer overflows and backups into

homes during rain events

l Update the sewer system to current standards through

replacement or rehabilitation

l Disconnect sump pumps, downspouts, yard drains and

catch basins that are discharging groundwater/stormwater

into the sanitary sewer system

l Rehabilitate sewer pipes and manholes allowing

groundwater or stormwater to enter sanitary sewers

I want to thank a delightful customer service rep, Charlotte

Whitfield-Baker, who helped me get some information

about an MSD project on my street. Not only was she

pleasant to speak with, but she did a really thorough job

researching the project and following through.

— Eric Brown

Larry Gardner, Dwayne Patton, Travis Westmoreland

and Denzil Whalin Sr. came out to repair a catch basin in

my driveway. They were very professional and explained

everything they were doing. I really appreciated the

information.

Honoring our veteransMSD recognized its 65 current employees who have served

—or are now serving—in the United States armed forces

during a ceremony on Veterans Day. The event, at MSD’s

Central Maintenance Facility, was held after normal work

shifts ended and was funded by donations from MSD

management and staff. Executive Director Tony Parrott

expressed his thanks to Paul “Duke” Edwards, Lopez High

and Dennis Thomasson for their leadership in organizing

these events. MSD is proud of, and grateful for, its employees

who have sacrificed through their U.S. military service.

Pouring fats, oils and grease down your drain (left) can result in a sewer pipe that looks like this (center). Properly dispose of fats, oils and grease in the trash (right) to prevent clogging your sewer line.

How to avoid a clogged pipel All food should be scraped and wiped off plates, trays,

pots, pans, utensils, grills and cooking surfaces, and then

properly disposed of in the trash. This will prevent buildup

and clogging of sewer lines.

l Sink strainers should be used to catch loose food debris,

which should be discarded in the trash.

l Grease waste should never be poured into the outside

storm sewer or catch basins. This can travel straight to a

stream and harm aquatic life, or it can clog sewer pipes

that lead to a water quality treatment center.

l Fats, oils or grease should not be poured down sinks or toilets.
