Thai Navy May Build Second Patrol Boat Under BAE LicenseDefense News, 17 April 2014

Thailand may build a second offshore patrol vessel under a license granted by BAE Systems and is also starting to think about exporting the ship to other navies in the region, according to a senior executive at the British-based defense contractor.

Discussions are underway for construction of a second warship after a technology transfer deal between BAE and the state-owned shipyard Bangkok Dock resulted in the fi rst of class, HTMS Krabi, being commissioned into the Royal Thai Navy in August 2013, said Alistair Castle, BAE’s Southeast Asia regional vice president.

Dear Colleague,

Based on a 20-year forecast published by Defence News, the APAC region will see 26 percent – nearly USD200 billion – of global naval and maritime security builds between 2013 - 2033. This includes 82 OPVs, 12 corvettes and 115 frigates, solidifying Asia's status as the fastest-growing market for OPVs and corvettes.

Complex relationships and rivalries in this region naturally create an intense drive for procurement to fulfi ll territorial protection roles. In addition to that, navies and coast guards are seeking versatile vessels for humanitarian assistance, search and rescue, anti-terrorist and sea robbery activities and environmental protection.

Thus, the annual Offshore Patrol Vessels conference has been renamed. The 5th Annual OPVs and Corvettes APAC will deliver content on OPVs AND corvettes. With discussions on these two popular asset types that APAC is going after, the conference will once again gather the most important stakeholders from the region’s Navies and Coast Guards, making it the only dedicated regional event to provide you with both the operational and acquisitional overview of the OPV and corvette market.

This year, in order to ensure fruitful and interactive discussions, the programme incorporates speed networking and discussion sessions, alongside panel discussions diving into maintenance, upgrading and purchasing plans and strategies. In addition, hear fi rst-hand operational experiences from fl ag and senior naval offi cers as they walk you through the challenges as well as strategies they have employed to successfully utilize OPVs and corvettes to fulfi ll various maritime operations.

This includes keynote briefi ngs from the Royal Malaysian Navy, MMEA, Indonesian Navy, Royal Thai Navy, Republic of Philippine Coast Guard and Republic of Philippine Navy, Royal Cambodian Navy and more.

I would strongly encourage you to take this opportunity to update yourselves on the latest naval technology and sea platforms and for you to benchmark your practices with regional counterparts.

Do not miss this chance to network with international and regional experts, colleagues, forge new relationships and enhance your awareness of the key stakeholders in the Asian OPV and corvette market.

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to this very unique event in April.

Yours Sincerely,Melissa LeongConference Director, Defence IQ
