Why introduce EPM?

Some typical issues• Projects are not

effectively prioritised• Projects happen without

authorisation• No definitive list of

projects• Project benefits are not

managed or realised• No visibility of progress

• Limited understanding of resource capacity

• Lack of control of project budgets

• Project risks are not captured and mitigated

• Inconsistent approaches• Minimal control of project

documentation

PMM Levels• Level 1 – Crisis Management

– No formal project plans or procedures exist. Project management tools are not in use.

• Level 2 – Reactive Management– Formal requirements exist to produce schedules and cost reports at project initiation but reporting

after project initiation is left to the discretion of the project manager. Informal project management tools such as Microsoft Excel are in use.

• Level 3 – Project Management– Proactive project management at the individual project level is in place. Desktop project

management tools such as Microsoft Project Standard or Professional Edition are in use.

• Level 4 – Program Management– Project management processes are formal and include methods and practices for planning and

managing multiple projects and resources across them. Collaborative project management tools such as Microsoft Project Server are in use.

• Level 5 – Managing Excellence– The focus is on continuous improvement and identifying and addressing project management

problems that cross organizational boundaries and require management action. Tools such as Microsoft Portfolio Server are in use.
