TAKING PARTAny number of entries, includingmultiple entries in the same category,are invited from housebuilders,developers and housing associations,large and small. Judges are looking forinformation that clearly and conciselytells them of the quality of the product,backed up with photographs and whythe entry is worthy of being consideredfor the industry's top accolades. Pleaserefer to Conditions of Entry on page 8for details of what is required in yourpresentation.

THE JUDGING When all entries have been received, an extensive panel of property experts,including architects, surveyors, propertywriters and industry specialists, willprepare their own shortlists of the bestentries in each category.

These shortlists are not published inadvance of the presentation ceremony.Selected entries will then be visitedwhere applicable and a detailed reportdrawn up before judges reach their finaldecisions. Up to three awards – Gold,Silver and Bronze – will be made ineach category (apart from Category 1).

Where entries are deemed ofinsufficient merit, the number of awardsmay be reduced in that category.

Written reports detailing the judges'decisions will be made available at theconclusion of the WhatHouse? Awardspresentation luncheon. The judges'decisions are final and nocorrespondence will be entered into.

As well as the quality, design and range of the houses built, all aspects of thehousebuilder’s performance will beassessed, including: the influence of seniormanagement, staff values, recruitment &training, sustainability initiatives, marketing,homebuying assistance schemes, after-sales service and customer care.

This award is only open to companiesbuilding at least 1,000 units a year.

All entrants in this category willautomatically be considered for theHousebuilder of the Year award.

3. Best Medium Housebuilder(100-999 units a year. Please state number)

This is an important category for allmedium-size housebuilders in the UK toenter. If you do not enter your companyinto this category you will not be eligibleto compete for Housebuilder of the Year.

As well as the quality, design and range of the houses built, all aspects of thehousebuilder’s performance will beassessed, including: the influence of seniormanagement, staff values, recruitment &training, sustainability initiatives, marketing,homebuying assistance schemes, after-sales service and customer care.

This award is only open to companiesbuilding between 100 and 999 units a year.

All entrants in this category willautomatically be considered for theHousebuilder of the Year award.

4. Best Small Housebuilder (Less than 100 units a year. Please state number)

This is an important category for allsmall housebuilders in the UK to enter.If you do not enter your company intothis category you will not be eligible tocompete for Housebuilder of the Year.

This is an opportunity for brand newcompanies having recently completedtheir first developments, or establishedsmall, niche housebuilders.

5. Sustainable Developer of the YearWith sustainability, energy efficiency andthe environment high on the government'sagenda, this category will reward eco-housebuilders pioneering the latesttechnology that are committed to allaspects of sustainability, with an eco-ethosrunning through the company from top tobottom. Judges will be looking for lowcarbon initiatives, use of sustainablematerials and energy-saving appliances –and, crucially, helping to develop andshape the low-carbon, sustainablecommunities of tomorrow.

6. Housing Association of the YearThis award is open to all housingassociations, large and small, with judgeslooking at all aspects of performance,including design and build, value formoney, management and marketing.Judges also want to see innovativesolutions to assist buyers on to the home ownership ladder or into rentedaccommodation, according to needs andstatus. Housing associations shouldillustrate, through a mix of tenures andequity schemes, how they are spreadingthe affordable and social housing optionsas wide and as flexibly as possible. Jointventures with private sector housebuilderscan also be included in entry submissions.

7. Best Starter Home SchemeWith ever increasing mortgage criteria tomeet, the judges are looking at starterhomes – either standalone developmentsor within wider housing schemes – thatnot only offer quality, value-for-moneyproperties for entry level budgets, butalso give first-time buyers a variety ofoptions and initiatives to help them ontothe first rung of the housing ladder.Affordable housing schemes fromhousing associations, shared equityinitiatives, mixed-tenure projects and jointventures between private and publicsector are all eligible. Build to rentschemes that meet the criteria can alsobe entered in this category.

8. Best HouseThe Best House award is for middle-market houses with that something extra –a high-quality family home of exceptionalstandard. Between the first-time buyer andthe big-money executive lies a mass newhomes market. What judges are lookingfor is a house that combines comfortablefamily living at a realistic price, but with theedge to lift it above its competitors. Not toobig and not too small, both affordable andaspirational.

9. Best Apartment SchemeThis may be a block of one-bedroomapartments at a budget price for first-time buyers, a luxury waterfrontapartment scheme, or a stylish high-risedevelopment. Judges will be looking at theinternal layout, elevational treatments andarchitectural innovation, while consideringthe relative price range and the overallquality of the scheme.

10. Best Luxury HouseA one-off bespoke house on a single plotor a luxurious, individually designedproperty on a small, exclusivedevelopment. This is the category for thehedonist pleasure dome – the house thathas everything. Judges are looking for anew home that is simply the best in everyaspect, with no expense spared onquality and luxury, but at the same time,offering value for money, albeit in anexalted price range.

11. Best RenovationThis award recognises enterprisingdevelopment of dated or derelict property.Exterior and interior appearance as well as interesting adaptation of originalfeatures will be considered. Before andafter images are key.

12. Best DevelopmentIs your site the Best Development inBritain? Judges will be looking for astylish mix of original designs, top qualitysite layout and landscaping, a variety ofexternal elevations and plenty of designflair inside and out. This is not an awardfor luxury, but an award for a mass-market development lifted above theordinary by the quality of its componentparts, be it geared to first-time buyers, themiddle market, or a mix of propertiesacross the price range.

13. Best Partnership SchemeThis award is designed to highlight theexcellent partnerships, or joint ventures,forged between developers and otherbodies, be they housing associations,local councils, retailers, or, givenrenewable energy requirements andlow-carbon initiatives, innovativepartnerships with utility companies.

14. Best Luxury DevelopmentThis category is for a top-of-the-rangedevelopment of executive homes, with no expense spared on design, finish,landscaping, security and customer care.Top houses for top people at premiumprices, be it swanky riverside apartments,or a millionaires' row of new-buildmansions, set in luxurious surroundings.The development should offer value formoney, albeit in an exalted price range.

15. Best Mixed Use DevelopmentThis category recognises the increasingimportance and number of mixed-useschemes. Judges will be looking fordevelopments with a range of differentfacilities and amenities and how theycontribute to the economic and socialenhancement of the neighbourhood. The development could be a large urban scheme, or a smaller scale, localmixed-use project. All developments musthave a residential element, combined with one or more of the following uses:commercial, office, retail or leisure.

Best Retirement DevelopmentThis award will be presented to thecompany that has produced the bestoverall package for elderly customers.The design of the development, includingaccessibility and adaptability, will beconsidered, as well as the quality ofadditional services and amenities indelivering outstanding homes and carefacilities for retirement living. Thiscategory covers age-restricted housing,sheltered accommodation, assistedsenior living, retirement villages anddevelopments offering a full range ofcare options to residents.

17. Best Regeneration SchemeAwards for developers who demonstratea commitment to the inner city and urbanrenewal, or rural regeneration, includingnew build on derelict land, brownfieldsites or refurbishment of existing housingstock. Regeneration of brownfield sites isat the forefront of the housing debate andthis category should provide outstandingexamples of the housebuilder as anengine of growth and renewal.

18. Best Interior DesignThis category recognises both interiordesign and interior architecture – thequality of the internal layouts, as well asfurnishing and specifying trends andinterpretations. How has the space beenbest utilised and has the full potential of the finished product been expertlyshowcased to the consumer?Interior designers and architects, whoshould be credited in entry submissions,are invited to encourage theirhousebuilder clients to enter.

19. Best Exterior DesignThis category is for the best looker. A striking housetype, façade ordevelopment profile, oozing kerb appealand style. It does not have to shoutloudly or show a lavish face and couldbe in the vernacular style of the area, orthoroughly modern and mould-breakingarchitecture.

20. Best Public RealmA new category this year embracingevery aspect of public realm in terms of landscaping, parks, open space and facilities for local residents. Public realm includes commissionedworks of art or cultural attractions andother innovations by housebuilders toenhance the public space in and aroundtheir new developments.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY1. The work entered in any category should have been largely

completed or due for completion between 1 January 2015 and

30 June 2016. Individual units on a partially completed site,

where the submitted work was completed between the above

dates, are eligible. In categories where whole developments

are entered, at least the first phase or a significant part of the

development, must have been completed between the above

dates. Essentially, there needs to be sufficient work completed

for the judges to be able to form a considered opinion

HOW TO ENTER

2. All entries must be submitted with the attached official entry

form (which can be photocopied). Plans, written material

and photographs should be submitted flat and preferably in

an A4 size wallet or folder.

3. The entry forms must be completed in full and the conditions

of entry strictly adhered to. Every individual entry will cost £450

+ VAT payable by cheque or BACS. For every three entries

from an individual company or brand you will be eligible for a

fourth entry FREE.

BACS payments can be accepted by sending the appropriate

fee to Globespan Media Ltd, sort code 51-50-03, account

number 66764491. One payment to cover multiple entries is

acceptable and a receipt will be issued promptly afterwards.

4. All entries in categories 2, 3 & 4 will automatically be

entered into Housebuilder of the Year for no extra charge.

5. Housebuilders may submit as many individual entries as they

wish in all categories (except categories 2,3,4,5 & 6). Please

note, if the same development or house is entered in more

than one category, the entire entry presentation must be

duplicated, so there are separate, individual submissions for

each entry. This does not apply to Categories 2, 3 and 4

where the entries will also be considered for Category 1 –

Housebuilder of the Year.

6. Please note that an AV presentation will take place at the

Awards luncheon. All entries must be accompanied by a

small selection of pictures – on disc or memory stick – of the

submitted unit or development. Please ensure all pictures

are clearly labelled and placed in a separate envelope

marked with the name of the company and development.

We also need a separate disc/memory stick of your

company logo.

7. Entry to the WhatHouse? Awards will be taken to admit the

right to publish photographs, descriptions and other

particulars of participating schemes.

PLANS

8. In all categories where the overall quality of a development

or individual unit is being assessed, entries, where

applicable, should include internal and external plans,

landscaping, location plans and site layouts. Room sizes

and total floor areas should also be given, together with

prices. All plans should be reduced to A4 or A3 folded.

DESCRIPTION

9. Judges are looking for clearly presented material, that

concisely informs them of the product or work of the

housebuilder and why the entrant is worthy of an award.

There is no restriction on the number of words written

within the entries, but it is advisable to keep them concise

and to the point bearing in mind the object of the entry

is to capture the judges’ attention as quickly and succinctly

as possible. The same applies for the accompanying

photography, where any number of pictures can be included

within the entry and good quality images are important.

Entries should not include original documents or photos as

their safekeeping cannot be assured.

The entry folders are aids to help judges draw up their own

shortlists in their respective categories, before selected entries

are visited and detailed award-winner reports drawn up.

Please note that we do not publish shortlists in advance and

the Awards results are only announced at the Presentation

Luncheon on 18 November at the Grosvenor House hotel.

10. In Categories 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, extensive details of companies

are required, giving judges the complete picture as to the

product, size, make-up, philosophy, history and sphere of the

company’s operation, supported by relevant photographs and

testimonials, as well as headline figures, results and data.

11. In all categories, postal addresses and telephone numbers

of sites submitted are required, as well as the name, email

and telephone number of the person responsible for your

award entry.

12. Products & Services. Housebuilders are encouraged to

acknowledge key suppliers and products, which have gone

into the home, scheme or initiative and contributed to the

award-winning potential of the entry. For example, the name

of the interior design/architecture company in Category 18.

13. Please note, the name of the housebuilder appearing on

your supplied company logo will be the name used on the

WhatHouse? Award plaque in the event of a successful entry.
