Role of EPIC – Establish a Waste Research Commercialisation Council (WRCC)

The following is a proposal for Waste Sector IP commercialization mechanism which

can provide with Technology Scanning for implementation at Cenviro Eco-Park:

Stage 1: Evaluation

• At this stage, to analyze all research programs currently funded by MOSTI (locally and Internationally) and evaluate their potential for commercialization (in collaboration with technical and industry experts)

Stage 2: Bidding Process

• Identified research outputs will now undergo a bidding process, whereby VC, angel investors or industry players will bid for the rights to purchase the IP of the research. IP can be in the form of basic research findings to finished products and processes, depending on the type of research.

Stage 3: Sale of IP

• At this stage, the IP will be sold to the successful bidder. The bidder may enter into further arrangements / agreements with the developer of the technology on its own purview.

Commercialization of Waste Sector IP can help in identifying new and

advanced technologies for implementation at Cenviro Eco-Park.

WWMU Need Statement


Globally, the market for waste management is expected to be sized at

around 562 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

Even with the current growth almost half of the world will still be

without minimum waste management services.

The number of employees in the waste management sector worldwide

is approximately at 40 Million people and expected to grow further.

This creates a very critical need to have continuous & properly trained

and skilled workforce in the waste industry.

Centre (EPIC) which has recently established the

Centre of Excellence for Waste Management in

Malaysia and the region is proposing to establish a

World Waste Management University (WWMU) in

Need Statement

The World Bank reported that waste management is one of the three main

sources of environmental degradation in the Asian region. With 4.4 billion

population, it is the largest waste producing continent on earth. It is

estimated that waste generation from urban cities in Asia alone ranges from

450,000 to 760,000 tonnes per day. By 2025, it is estimated that 1.8 billion

tonnes of waste will be generated by urban cities in Asia which is about 5

million tonnes per day.

The Waste Management Industry itself continues to grow exponentially with

the market size expected to be valued at 562 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 and

approximately 40 million people employed in the waste management sector

worldwide currently.

With all these factors, creates the need to promote a more professional

approach to resource and waste management not only in Malaysia but also

for the Asian region.

The formation of CIWM Malaysia is a first of its kind globally as this is the

first chapter to be opened outside of United Kingdom. The formation of

CIWM Malaysia by EPIC would allow membership to come from Malaysia and

from the Asia region.

CIWM Overview

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) is a

professional body for the waste management industry in the United

Kingdom and other countries. Based in Northampton, it has ten

regional centres throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern

Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and is a member of the Society for

the Environment. It awards the title of Chartered Waste Manager to

qualifying members.

The objectives of the CIWM are to advance the scientific, technical and

practical aspects of wastes and resource management for the

safeguarding of the natural environment, to promote education,

training, and research in wastes and resource management, and the

dissemination of knowledge of the topic; and to strive to achieve and

maintain the highest standards of best practice, technical competence

and conduct by all its members.


CIWM Partnership with Malaysia

In 2017 Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) enters an agreement with the

Environmental Preservation and Innovation Centre (EPIC) and to work together to promote a

more professional approach to resource and waste management in Malaysia.

The formation of CIWM Malaysia is a first of its kind globally as this is the first chapter to be

opened outside of United Kingdom. The formation of CIWM Malaysia would allow membership to

come from Malaysia and from the Asian region.
