    Shaping the STRUCTURE

This is often the most difficult step in this method of exegesis

as there is no perfect answer.

But the main idea is to bring to attention the grammaticalstructure

This relates closely to the questions about

who is doing what, where, when, how and why

    (another way of doing grammar!)

So please note the differences between

    the Classs analysis

    and

    the Tutors analysis!

    Notes onShaping the STRUCTURE

Just because a clause comes before the main sentence

does not mean we have to start with that clause in our

alignment. Try to start with the subject of the main

sentence and align clauses appropriately even thoughthey start the paragraph/sentence

Keep the disciples together! were is the verb of that

clause and therefore the controlling word for alignment ofthe rest. How were they together? Ans: with the door locked.

Why were the doors locked? Ans: for fear of the Jews!

    10/33

    Notes on

    Shaping the STRUCTURE

But we havent come to the most important fact yet:

Jesus came. (We tend to focus on ourown fears and

problems and relegate the presence ofJesus to the

    back of our minds!)

So while the scene is set with the focus on the

disciples fear, the grammatical structure reminds us

that that is not the most significant fact in the situation!

  • 8/14/2019 EP7. How to exegete John 20 v 19-23 WEB V

    11/33

    Notes on

    Shaping the STRUCTURE

What matters is what Jesusdid (came, stood,

showed, breathed) and said. And this is what the

    sermon should be about.

Of course the disciples do have an important part in

the narrative (as we still do today!) But we must get

our priorities right Jesus first; ourselves responding

to what He says to us!

  • 8/14/2019 EP7. How to exegete John 20 v 19-23 WEB V

    12/33

    Notes on

    Shaping the STRUCTURE

Now youve probably started to preach this sermon already inyour mind:

After Jesus death, his disciples were devastated! How couldGod allow this to happen? What were they going to do next? They got together! Where? In some room where they wouldbe safe and could lock the door Why should they want tolock the door? They were scared! Why? Because the Jewswere after them, or so they thought! But wait a minute when did there meeting take place? on the evening of the

first day of the week hadnt they been told the news bythen? That Jesus had risen? Hadnt anyone told them yet?

    And so on.

  • 8/14/2019 EP7. How to exegete John 20 v 19-23 WEB V

    13/33

    Notes on

    Shaping the STRUCTURE

Excitement builds up as the congregationstarts to feel itself to be in the situation of the

    disciples

Note how all this comes out of closely

    observing the grammatical structure!

    Notes on ACTION Questions

It is good to note down EVERY possible answer to

    these six Action Questions because:

they draw our attention to significant details that

we might miss otherwise, e.g. the timing of the event The disciples fear

they highlight where any emphasis has been

placed, e.g. what Jesus said about: Peace

    Forgiveness

While it is good to note down EVERY possibleanswer to these six Action Questions:

The sermon itself does not need to cover ALL

    these details

that the passage contains in order to understand it fully and accurately
