Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible

treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

“Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master’s return from a wedding,

ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.

Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them.

And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared

in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming,

he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect,

the Son of Man will come.” Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” And the Lord replied,

“Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants

to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.

Truly, I say to you, the master will put the servant in charge of all his property. But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’

and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant’s master will come

on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish the servant severely

and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master’s will but did not make preparations nor

act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master’s will

but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much,

and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more."

August 11, 2019 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish:

Last week I had the opportunity to share with you our ongoing ministry to the poor and homeless popula-tion in downtown San Jose. This week I want to intro-duce a new collaborative initiative to facilitate greater engagement of Spanish speaking parents in the educa-tion of their daughters and sons. Many aspects of our educational system are unique to the United States. It is often difficult for parents to adequately negotiate the system and assist their children to gain a solid academic foundation for life.

Parents Institute for Quality Education (PIQE) is a non-profit organization that works with families over nine weeks to familiarize them with the education sys-tem, strategize on how best to assist their children through the system, and more effectively partner with teachers and school administrators in the education pro-cess.

St. Joseph Cathedral, St. Leo the Great, and Sacred Heart of Jesus parishes are sponsoring this program this spring for 35 families with elementary age children. The families will be identified in collaboration with pas-toral ministry teams of the three parishes. If you know of families in the parish who might benefit from the pro-gram, please contact me directly.

This process has been made possible through gen-erous grants from the Catholic Community Foundation of Santa Clara County ($4,500) and the Hispanic Foun-dation of Silicon Valley ($5,000). The Catholic Com-munity Foundation has funded the program for two years enabling us to build on expected success and assist more families during the next academic year. I want to personally thank Mary Aumack and the staff of the Catholic Community Foundation as well as Ron Gonza-les and the staff of the Hispanic Foundation for their leadership and assistance in procuring these grants. I am most grateful.

I look forward to collaborating with the pastors and staff members of St. Leo and Sacred Heart parishes to ensure the success of this effort.

Statement from Bishop Oscar Cantú and the Diocese of San Jose regarding the deadly violence in El Paso and Dayton From the community still wounded from a mass shoot-ing just a week ago in Gilroy, we send our prayers and heartfelt concerns to the people of El Paso and Dayton, and all those affected by the recent shootings that have left 29 people dead and many wounded. We grieve with the families of the deceased and pray for the recovery of the wounded and injured. We think of those who harbor hatred and fear in their minds and hearts: we remind them that it is unaccepta-ble to take out their frustrations on the innocent. All human persons are created in God’s image and likeness and, as the Declaration of Independence affirms, possess inalienable rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of hap-piness.” Moreover, we are reminded that each of us in the human family bears a responsibility for each other: for brother, sister, neighbor. Thus, it is important that we realize the impact that lan-guage and attitudes of racism, discrimination, and hatred can have on others. We also encourage each other to report to proper authorities any warning signs we notice in others that reveal hatred and a willingness to hurt oth-ers or themselves. Finally, we stand in solidarity with Cardinal Daniel Di-Nardo and Bishop Frank Dewane in their statement on behalf of the US bishops: “The plague that gun violence has become continues unchecked and spreads across our country. Things must change. Once again, we call for effective legislation that addresses why these unimagi-nable and repeated occurrences of murderous gun vio-lence continue to take place in our communities.” May the God of peace bring comfort to the families of the deceased and healing to the wounded and in-jured. May we all heed the words of Jesus, “love one another.”

Mission Cooperative Appeal for August 18 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Joseph Cathedral: Each year, parishes in the Diocese of San Jose participate in the Mission Cooperative. Through this annual collec-tion we are made aware of the needs of dioceses and reli-gious congregations which serve heroically despite chal-lenges we do not face here in the Diocese of San José. Next weekend, we welcome Fr. Richard Catanach from the Diocese of Las Cruces. The Diocese of Las Cruces encompasses vast regions of southern New Mexico. The diocese is largely rural and serves many areas scarred by poverty and limited by lack of opportunities. The diocese lacks sufficient priests and resources to adequately meet the many needs of the community. On a personal note, it is great to see Fr. Catanach again. We attended New Mexico State University together and were both active in St. Albert the Great Newman Center. Fr. Catanach is pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Las Cruces and has also served the diocese as its vicar general. Cada año, las parroquias en la Diócesis de San José parti-cipan en la Cooperativa Misionera. Mediante esta colecta anual, se nos da a conocer las necesidades de las diócesis y congregaciones religiosas que sirven heroicamente a pesar de los desafíos que no nos enfrenta aquí en la Dióce-sis de San José.

El próximo fin de semana, recibiremos al P. Richard Cata-nach de la Diócesis de Las Cruces. La Diócesis de Las Cruces abarca inmensas regiones del sur de Nuevo Méxi-co. La diócesis es mayormente rural y sirve muchas áreas marcadas por la pobreza y limitadas por la falta de oportu-nidades. La diócesis carece de suficientes sacerdotes y recursos para alcanzar adecuadamente las muchas necesi-dades de la comunidad.

Personalmente, será maravilloso ver de nuevo al P. Cata-nach. Asistimos juntos a la Universidad Estatal de Nuevo México y ambos fuimos activos en el Centro Newman de S. Alberto. El P. Catanach es el párroco de la Parr. Santa Cruz in Las Cruces además de servir a la diócesis como su vicario general.

An orientation to this sacrament of welcome and the role of par-ents and sponsors is a required aspect of the arrangements. Jesus' instructions on how to be ready for the coming judgment continue. We are not to be like the greedy rich man in last Sun-day's Gospel who planned to store his great harvest in barns rather than share it. The antidote for the anxiety brought on by

the coming judgment is to relinquish our possessions and provide for the needs of others. Our treasure will be in heaven. The other major way to be ready for the coming judg-ment is to be watchful. Jesus tells a parable about watchfulness to begin making this point. We must be like servants waiting for the master's return from a wed-ding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even if the master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like. Peter asks if this parable is meant for the apostles or for the large crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus. Jesus responds with another parable about servants awaiting the return of their master. It begins with a question: “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time?” This parable adds to the theme of watchfulness; it explains how to wait and reminds us of the reward for the faithful fol-lower at the heavenly banquet after the judgment. If it is addressed to the apostles, then it could also be addressed to leadership in the early Church. Either way, the para-bles reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doing our jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich man, we will not have a place in the kingdom. Watchfulness means living in such a consistently moral and obedient way that we are always ready to give an account to God of how we have lived. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Clare of Assisi July 16, 1194 – August 11, 1253

Having refused to marry at 15, Clare was moved by the dynamic preaching of Francis of Assisi. He became her lifelong friend and spiritual guide. At 18, Clare escaped from her father’s home one night, was met on the road by friars carrying torches, and in the poor little chapel called the Portiuncula received a rough woolen habit, exchanged her jeweled belt for a common rope with knots in it, and sacrificed her long tresses to Francis’ scissors. He placed her in a Benedictine convent, which her father and uncles immediately stormed in rage. Clare clung to the altar of the church, threw aside her veil to show her cropped hair, and remained adamant. Sixteen days later her sister Agnes joined her. Others came. They lived a simple life of great poverty, austerity, and complete seclusion from the world, according to a Rule which Francis gave them as a Second Order. At age 21, Francis obliged Clare under obedience to accept the office of abbess, one she exercised until her death. The Poor Ladies went barefoot, slept on the ground, ate no meat, and observed almost complete silence.

Later Clare, like Francis, persuaded her sisters to moderate this rigor: “Our bodies are not made of brass.” The greatest emphasis, of course, was on gospel poverty. They pos-sessed no property, even in com-mon, subsisting on daily contribu-tions. When even Pope Gregory IX tried to persuade Clare to mitigate this practice, she showed her char-acteristic firmness: “I need to be absolved from my sins, but I do not wish to be absolved from the obligation of following Jesus Christ.” Francis always remained her great friend and in-spiration. Clare was always obedient to his will and to the great ideal of gospel life which he was making real. The 41 years of Clare’s religious life are scenarios of sanctity: an indomitable resolve to lead the simple, literal gospel life as Francis taught her; courageous resistance to the ever-present pressure to dilute the ideal; a passion for poverty and humility; an ardent life of prayer; and a generous con-cern for her sisters.

Fr. Victor’s Trip to México I started to get homesick a little so I went to the place in Guadalajara which re-minds me most about San Jose: a milk tea place. This one is called Bubble Pop. It even blasts kpop music inside. Bubble tea is almost like a staple in San Jose and you can even find it here too. Before I left for Mexico, my nephew gave me this Jesus doll. If you ever watched the movie Amélie, the main char-acter takes a garden gnome and puts it in pictures as if he’s traveling all over the world. Taking from that idea, I started taking my Jesus doll around with me and taking photos in different places. This is a photo of him in front of the Cathedral of Guadalajara. Even though I was feeling homesick, the Jesus doll was a reminder that wherever I go, God is always with me, and family is never too far. Even in a strange land where I don’t fully speak the language, the Holy Spirit can still be at work. I just hope that wherever I go in the future, there’s boba tea somewhere nearby. Fr. Victor
