For a greener earthThe IT ExNoRa conducted a couple of events lastweekend to orient people on the 88888 campaign. Thefirst one at TCS Vadapalani saw the participation ofaround 35 associates. The second campaign was atChennai CitiCentre, where members distributedpamphlets, briefed shoppers on global warming, etc.

Take a detour off the busy Anna Salai,to a quaint old shop that boasts of rich history, music and instruments.Musee Musicals is not only a store-

house of both Western and Indian musicalinstruments but also houses a musicschool that offers certificates authorised by the renowned Trinity College, London. Thered brick building will remind you of colo-nial India. Interestingly it was once an ele-phant stable.

The store is an inviting corner for musiclovers and one can easily find someonestrumming the guitar or playing a soulfulnote on the piano.

Hands of historyStarted in 1842 by Mr. Misquith as mu-

sical instrument and repair storeunder the name of Misquith&Co, the store launched branch-es in Bangalore, Coonoor, Ooty and Rangoon. Soon with the in-creasing popularity of the place, they ventured into a music schooland collaborated with the Trinity College, London in 1901. Today, itis one of largest centres of musiclearning in India and more than5,000 students pass out every year.

In 1935, it was bought over by French-man, E.A. Prudhomme, who named it Mu-see Musicals in the hope to make it amonument of music – Musee means mu-seum in French. “My forefathers took overthe shop from a British lady, Ms. Amy Ro-zario, a friend of Prudhomme, who ran thestore. We are trying to follow the same tra-dition of music learning with the businesson one side started over 15 decades back,”says Kishore Das. He is the 9th generationof a family from Gujarat who came here tostart a business.

You can almost trace the colonial past of Chennai through the store in the way it hasmoved from a Portuguese owner, to aFrench, then to a British and finally intothe hands of the Das family.

Stamped foreverIn 2001, the establishment celebrated its

Musee Musicals off the busy Anna Salai is aunique store every which way you look at it

u

centenary for the relationship it has

with Trinity College and the governmentadded to the celebrations by releasing afirst day cover on the occasion. The Dasfamily is constantly trying to reach out tomore people and inspire young minds totake up music. The store now has branchesin Pondicherry, Secunderabad andHyderabad.

East meets west  When the Das family took over the es-

tablishment, they realised the importanceof incorporating traditional Indian instru-ments as well. “We didn’t want to limitourselves to western music alone. To reachour immediate customers we had to pro-vide something they could relate to,” Kish-ore adds. ■

A start-up led by former star

Google engineers has un-veiled a new Web searchservice that aims to outdo

the Internet search leader in size, but faces an uphill battle chang-ing Web surfing habits.

Would-be Google rivalCuil Inc (pronounced “cool”) is

offering a new search service at

http://www.cuil.com that thecompany claims can index, fasterand more cheaply, a far largerportion of the Web than Google,

  which boasts the largest onlineindex.

The would-be Google rival saysits service goes beyond prevailing search techniques that focus on

Web links and audience trafficpatterns and instead analyses thecontext of each page and the con-cepts behind each user search re-quest.

“Our significant breakthroughsin search technology have en-abled us to index much more of the Internet, placing nearly theentire Web at the fingertips of ev-

ery user,” Tom Costello, Cuil co-founder and chief executive, saidin a statement.

To exploit complaintson Google

Danny Sullivan, a Web search

analyst and editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, said Cuil cantry to exploit complaints con-

sumers may have with Google __namely, that it tries to do toomuch, that its results favour al-ready popular sites, and that itleans heavily on certain author-itative sites such as Wikipedia. ■

A fter three years of strong growth, top20 IT companies in India, a majority ofthem engaged in IT services exports, recorded a revenue growth of 24 per

cent in 2007-08, against 41 per cent growth inthe previous financial year, according to asurvey.

The top 20 IT services exporters recorded agrowth of 29 per cent compared to 45 percent in 2006-07, findings of the CyberMedia’sDataquest Indian IT Industry survey 2008 re-vealed.

These top 20 domestic IT players recorded27 per cent growth against 31 per cent lastyear. Three foreign multinationals -- Accen-ture, SAP and Dell -- entered the list. A stron-ger Rupee adversely impacted theexports-heavy Indian IT industry in FY 08when the average value of the Rupee in com-parison to the Dollar rose nine per cent, witha vast majority of IT companies still unfazedby a slowdown in the global outsourcing in-dustry.

In the listing of the Top 20 IT companiesfrom India, the top seven positions remainedunchanged, with TCS, Wipro, Infosys, HP In-dia, IBM India, Ingram Micro and SatyamComputer Services retaining their positions, from number one through number seven.

HP India and Ingram Micro derive a majorpart of their revenues from the sale of com-puter systems and peripherals, while the oth-ers make money from exports of software

services; IBM India has significant services --domestic and exports -- revenue, as well assystems sales. ■

If you think IT professionals think nothing but computers here is someplay for thought. Rebelz, a theatregroup formed by IT professionals,

went against their morose image andgave the audiences a glimpse of whathappened ‘Once upon a time in Arabia’.Staged at Sivagami Pethachi Auditori-um over the weekend, Once Upon aTime in Arabia is a spoof on classic Ara-bian tales.

There is trouble in the ancient Ara-bian kingdom of Petra, where themain characters of the play, Ali (Ash-  win) and Sinkbath (Bharath), pulltheir roles off to a T. Ali is the hand-

some peasant deeply in love with thevoice of a song he heard in the palaceand Sinkbath the bumbling sailor  who owns a ‘ship of the desert’. Alithinks he is in love with Ayesha (Ma-hima) and tries to win her heart with the help of his sidekick broth-er. They have a friend called Jassi(Shritha), who also happens to be Ayesha’s younger sister and deeply in love with Ali and tries to help in whichever way possible. How thislove triangle is sorted out be-comes the crux of the play.

There is no story that is com-plete without a villain. In this

play Parthasarathy

plays the Vizier. Dressed in a combi-

nation of red and black, he gives aconvincing performance with histhunderous laugh and not-so-inge-nious schemes to take over the king-dom. Ayesha could have been playedbetter. And Jasmine, the youngerprincess, had certain stagnant roles

where she walks about the stage foran inch too longer than required. Butthe one character that scores a 10/10for his performance is Sandeep as the

Vizier’s bodyguard, whose ‘Hail the  Vizier’ dialogues had people falling off their seats. His one-liners andlaugh stole the show.

The costumes were simple andsuited the backdrop and theme well,

with the exception of princess Ayesha’s, which did not suit the char-

acter’s pompous role. The camel alsolooked a little rugged but added tothe humour of the entire situation.

There were some scenes where thelights didn’t come on time and the lipsync for some songs was not doneproperly.

All actors did justice to their rolesbut at the end of it the schoolboy ge-nie, played by Harish (who is also thedirector of the play), added the finalcolour.

Overall, the play was a good watchand a lot more can be expected fromthis group in the future. ■

T

he cafeteria tray is being el-bowed out of the US univer-sity canteens as campuseschange the way students

collect their food and look forsavings in tough economic times.

Ditching the tray at the all-you-can-eat buffet in the studentcafeteria has allowed the Univer-sity of North Carolina, for in-stance, to save 30,000 gallons of water (113,000 liters) a month, forthe simple reason that the traysno longer have to be washed.

Getting rid of the trays has alsoresulted in less food being wast-ed, said Monica Zimmer, spokes-woman for food services giant

Sodexo.“We know that the average stu-

dent takes 1.4 entrees when they have a tray. When they don’t havea tray, it’s harder to carry. So they

take less,” Zimmer told AFP.“One pilot study we didshowed food waste was reduced

by up to 50 per cent on one cam-pus,” Zimmer told AFP.

The food services company   Aramark measured food wasted

from more than 186,000 mealsserved at over 25 higher educa-tion institutions during the aca-demic year. Since trays fell by the

wayside at the University of Maine, the cafeteria has dishedout 56 pounds (25 kilos) less foodper person, per year.

The movement towards what iseloquently called ‘trayless dining’began roughly a year ago, andstudents have embraced the ef-fort to promote environmentalstewardship.

More than one-third of the 600campuses served by Sodexo arealready trayless, including reput-able institutions such as the Uni-versity of Massachusetts at

Dartmouth, Georgia Tech, andTulane in New Orleans. ■

British business executivescan now undergo Indian eti-

quette lessons before flying outto India – thanks to the UnitedKingdom-India BusinessCouncil which is launching a

series of ‘culture courses’. Witha growing trend of British com-panies seeking to establish apresence in India, the courses

will offer valuable tips on how to bow graciously, smile polite-ly and refrain from kissing

 women, ‘The Guardian’ report-ed.

In fact, the lessons follow re-ports of business deals collaps-ing due to overly tactile salespeople, patronising chief exec-utives and British delegates of-fending their Indiancounterparts by standing withtheir hands on their hips andcalling Indian managers by their first names. ”The US andJapan are already well estab-

lished in India but there’s afeeling that if Britain does notget properly involved soonthey will be missing the boat.Business in India is all abouttrust. If you make a wrong move culturally you can throw away your chances,” UKIBC’sChief Executive Sharon Bam-ford was quoted as saying.

The organisation has drawnup a list of dos and don’ts

which include meeting poten-tial business partners with asmile and the respectful greet-ing ‘namaste’, making smalltalks and bowing slightly withpalms together. ■

Last time his rifle went off at the

Beijing Shooting Range Hall, itfetched him a bronze. ComeOlympics and Gagan Narang

says he won’t have issues with thecolour of the medal. China so far hasnot let down the Hyderabadi sharp-shooter and as he leaves for Beijing via Malaysia, Gagan only hopes thathis love affair with the country con-tinues.

“I have been to the Beijing Shoot-ing Range Hall in April and it’s huge, breathtaking. I have good memoriesof the place and hope it remains thesame,” Gagan said before leaving forMalaysia. Gagan’s tryst with Chinabegan in 2006 Guangzhou ISSF

the Beijing World Cup and withinfour months, Gagan returns to thesame venue hoping for an encore. “Iknow it’s not going to be a cakewalk.I have to command my mind andbody together and put my best footforward. I have to give my best andpray it would be good enough for amedal,” said the shooter, who be-came the first marksman to book hisBeijing berth in rifle events.

Gaganstill remains wary of competition.“Russians, Chinese and Ameri-cans – none of them are really sit-ting back and relaxing. It’s going to be one hell of a competition. The toughest competition prob-ably comes from yourself. Youhave to completely block yourmind. Forget about the goal,

"It was worked out in such   way to ensure that I peak at thright time. We have done our band I just pray things go according to plan,” said the shooter.

Incidentally, Gagan will havcompatriot Abhinav Bindra in thsame range and he says they ongoad each other to do well. “Itnot like competing with each other. We just spur each other to dbetter. I will be happy if he comeback with a medal. And will bhappier if both of us win medals

Organizers of the Beijing OlympicGames say China’s home-growntechnological innovation is thedriving force in the preparation

of the games. They say the country’sstate-of-the-art scientific and techno-logical achievements have been incor-porated into the construction of venues and preparation of facilities.

And the Olympic Games are also a col-lective display of the country’s scien-tific strength.

Technological innovationsThe Bird’s Nest and Water Cube are

household names in China. For thegeneral public, they are synonymouswith the magnificence of the Beijing

Olympic Games. But behind the gran-deur lies the hard work of some of thebest scientific minds in the country.

A spokesman of the Beijing Munici-pal Science and Technology Commis-sion, Yang Weiguang, says the greatestwish of the venues’ construction teamis to give the world a lasting legacy of modern architecture.

He says the steel structure is one of

the hardest parts in the construction of every Olympic venue. A total of 150,000tons of steel has been used to set up theframework to support these colossalstructures. More than 50 of the latesttechnological achievements were ap-plied in the construction of the Bird’sNest alone. And the use of environ-mentally-friendly materials and cleanenergy is one of the focuses.

Yang Weiguang says the seven new Olympic venues in Beijing cover a landarea of nearly 2 million square kilome-ters. Nearly 27 percent of the venueswere built with recycled materials. So-lar-power generating units have beeninstalled at all 7 venues. And the rainwater collection system at these venuescan contribute up to one million tons

of water every year.

Safety  Authorities say the safety of these

Olympic venues is also a primary con-cern. They say all venues will bewatched around-the-clock by a mon-itoring system. The structural param-eters of these venues under differentcircumstances will be recorded con-stantly. And emergency plans havebeen worked out to cope with some of the worst-case scenarios, such asearthquakes or over-loading. ■

The RoboCop franchise will hit the streetsagain and this time it will be helmed by Dar-

ren Aronofsky.MGM made the announcement that the new

instalment will be out in 2010.David Self is penning the remake about the

hero whose tagline is “part man, part ma-chine and all cop.”

MGM is keeping the logline un-der wraps, but insiders say it willtake the sci-fi vigilante classic inmore of a noir direction.

Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy isproducing the new RoboCop alongside

Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and DavidThwaites.

Original films centred on a fatally   wounded cop who returns to the policeforce as a powerful cyborg haunted by submerged memories.

After 1987’s RoboCop and its two se-quels hit the big screen, they have becomesolid earners for MGM’s film library, with4.1 million DVDs sold. The franchise is partic-ularly popular in Japan, Germany and the U.K.

“After making the first RoboCop at Orionmore than 20 years ago, I’m thrilled to be help-

ing to return this character to the screen withour partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self,” Hollyscoopquoted Medavoy, as saying. ■

The director who gave the Tamil audience films likeKhushi and Vaali couldn’t fare well as an actor. S.J. Su-ryah’s previous ventures as hero, Thirumugan and Vyaa-pari , were flops. Now the director-turned-actor has

pinned all his hopes on his next flick,  Newtonin MoondramVidhi . An interview:

We weren’t able to spot you on the silver screen for a very long time....

Continuous flops had torn me down and I had to remainsilent till I picked up the right script. Thanks to director ThaiMuthu Selvan for approaching me with a good script.

Do you blame anyone for those failures?Earnestly speaking, I made blunders by picking scripts thatnever suited my character. So, no blame rests on the direc-

tors.

Tell us something about Puli . We wanted to start shooting for the film last month.

Due to an accident, the doctors advised me to rest forsometime and that has delayed the shooting. PawanKalyan plays the lead role of a cop and A.R. Rahmanscores the music. We are in pursuit of a heroine.

Earlier, you wanted to make Puli in Tamil with Vijay, right?

Yes, initially I wanted to make this film in Tamil with Vijay playing the lead. But due to his commitment to- wards other projects it got delayed and I had to opt forPawan Kalyan, who I felt would be more apt for the roleof a cop.

Something on Newtonin Moondram Vidhi....

It’s about a fashion designer seeking revenge on one of the top-most tycoons in India responsible for the death of

his ladylove. The story may seem quite cliché, but whatmakes it so different is that the protagonist does it within acouple of hours.

A person could be scared every moment of her life. Sure eating, sleeping and all the other fearson this list could cripple peopleon a daily basis, but not poten-tially for every moment of your

waking life unlike anemophobia, the fear of air. Outside of living in a bubble with a controlled at-mosphere, nothing comes tomind to counter such a phobia.

Decidophobia

You just did it! You just made thedecision to continue reading thislist, which includes the phobia of making decisions, decidophobia.

A person who cannot make a de-cision is likely to be eternally stuck in a rut. Unless something becomes second nature such aseveryday routines, a person couldbe crippled by the simple deci-sion of what to eat for breakfast.

However, a person with stasiba-siphobia, the fear of standing upand walking could very well neverget anything done in life, unlesshe was confined to a wheelchair. But what happens if that personis afraid of someone else standing up and walking? Does that meanthe phobic must live in isolationin a sitting position for the rest of his life?

The fear of clocks might easbe overcome; however chronphobia is the fear of time. Timsurrounds us, it binds us.chronophobics were to themselves of all reminders time, such as clocks, that woube one thing. But as soon they think about the fact thtime is slipping away, their saity might slip as well.

A person with somniphobia fears sleep. Humans need the REM cycles of sleep to help digest their everyday thoughts and activities  Without sleep, a person could, potentially, slowly go insane due to fatigue and too many screws loose in the noggin. We all havenightmares, but can you imagine having a waking nightmare about going to sleep?
