Below is the v ideo and transcript of the Coxsackie-Athens HS Class of 2010 valedictory speech that went v iral

on the web, thus proclaiming me as the 'valedictorian who spoke out against schooling.'

    Here I Stand

There is a story of a y oung, but earnest Zen student who approached his teacher, and asked the Master, "If

I work very hard and diligently , how long will it take for me to find Zen? The Master thought about this, then

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

replied, "Ten y ears." The student then said, "But what if I work very , very hard and really apply my self to

learn fast - How long then?" Replied the Master, "Well, twenty y ears." "But, if Ireally, really work at it, how long

then?" asked the student. "Thirty y ears," replied the Master. "But, I do not understand," said the disappointed

student. "At each time that I say I will work harder, y ou say it will take me longer. Why do y ou say that?"

Replied the Master, "When y ou have one ey e on the goal, y ou only have one ey e on the path."

This is the dilemma I've faced within the American education sy stem. We are so focused on a goal,

whether it be passing a test, or graduating as first in the class. However, in this way , we do not really learn. We

do whatever it takes to achieve our original objective.

Some of y ou may be thinking, Well, if y ou pass a test, or become valedictorian, didn't y ou learn

something? Well, y es, y ou learned something, but not all that y ou could have. Perhaps, y ou only learned how

to memorize names, places, and dates to later on forget in order to clear y our mind for the next test. School is

not all that it can be. Right now, it is a place for most people to determine that their goal is to get out as soon

    as possible.

I am now accomplishing that goal. I am graduating. I should look at this as a positive experience,

especially being at the top of my class. However, in retrospect, I cannot say that I am any more intelligent

than my peers. I can attest that I am only the best at doing what I am told and working the sy stem. Y et, here I

stand, and I am supposed to be proud that I have completed this period of indoctrination. I will leave in the

fall to go on to the next phase expected of me, in order to receive a paper document that certifies that I am

capable of work. But I contest that I am a human being, a thinker, an adventurer not a worker. A worker is

someone who is trapped within repetition a slave of the sy stem set up before him. But now, I have

successfully shown that I was the best slave. I did what I was told to the extreme. While others sat in class and

doodled to later become great artists, I sat in class to take notes and become a great test-taker. While others

would come to class without their homework done because they were reading about an interest of theirs, I

never missed an assignment. While others were creating music and writing ly rics, I decided to do extra credit,

even though I never needed it. So, I wonder, why did I even want this position? Sure, I earned it, but what will

come of it? When I leave educational institutionalism, will I be successful or forever lost? I have no clue about

what I want to do with my life; I have no interests because I saw every subject of study as work, and I excelled

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

at every subject just for the purpose of excelling, not learning. And quite frankly , now I'm scared.

John Tay lor Gatto, a retired school teacher and activ ist critical of compulsory schooling, asserts, We

could encourage the best qualities of y outhfulness curiosity , adventure, resilience, the capacity for

surprising insight simply by being more flexible about time, texts, and tests, by introducing kids into truly

competent adults, and by giv ing each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every

now and then. But we don't do that. Between these cinderblock walls, we are all expected to be the same. We

are trained to ace every standardized test, and those who dev iate and see light through a different lens are

worthless to the scheme of public education, and therefore v iewed with contempt.

    H. L. Mencken wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924 that the aim of public education is not

to fill the y oung of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. ...

Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim ... is simply to reduce as many

indiv iduals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized

citizenry , to put down dissent and originality . That is its aim in the United States.

    (Gatto)

To illustrate this idea, doesn't it perturb y ou to learn about the notion of critical thinking. Is there really

such a thing as uncritically thinking? To think is to process information in order to form an opinion. But if we

are not critical when processing this information, are we really thinking? Or are we mindlessly accepting other

    opinions as truth?

This was happening to me, and if it wasn't for the rare occurrence of an avant-garde tenth grade English

teacher, Donna Bry an, who allowed me to open my mind and ask questions before accepting textbook

doctrine, I would have been doomed. I am now enlightened, but my mind still feels disabled. I must retrain

my self and constantly remember how insane this ostensibly sane place really is.

And now here I am in a world guided by fear, a world suppressing the uniqueness that lies inside each of

us, a world where we can either acquiesce to the inhuman nonsense of corporatism and materialism or insist

on change. We are not enlivened by an educational sy stem that clandestinely sets us up for jobs that could be

automated, for work that need not be done, for enslavement without fervency for meaningful achievement.

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

We have no choices in life when money is our motivational force. Our motivational force ought to be passion,

but this is lost from the moment we step into a sy stem that trains us, rather than inspires us.

We are more than robotic bookshelves, conditioned to blurt out facts we were taught in school. We are all

very special, every human on this planet is so special, so aren't we all deserv ing of something better, of using

our minds for innovation, rather than memorization, for creativ ity , rather than futile activ ity , for rumination

rather than stagnation? We are not here to get a degree, to then get a job, so we can consume industry -

approved placation after placation. There is more, and more still.

The saddest part is that the majority of students don't have the opportunity to reflect as I did. The

majority of students are put through the same brainwashing techniques in order to create a complacent labor

force working in the interests of large corporations and secretive government, and worst of all, they are

completely unaware of it. I will never be able to turn back these 18 y ears. I can't run away to another country

with an education sy stem meant to enlighten rather than condition. This part of my life is over, and I want to

make sure that no other child will have his or her potential suppressed by powers meant to exploit and

control. We are human beings. We are thinkers, dreamers, explorers, artists, writers, engineers. We are

any thing we want to be - but only if we have an educational sy stem that supports us rather than holds us

down. A tree can grow, but only if its roots are given a healthy foundation.

For those of y ou out there that must continue to sit in desks and y ield to the authoritarian ideologies of

instructors, do not be disheartened. Y ou still have the opportunity to stand up, ask questions, be critical, and

create y our own perspective. Demand a setting that will prov ide y ou with intellectual capabilities that allow

y ou to expand y our mind instead of directing it. Demand that y ou be interested in class. Demand that the

excuse, Y ou have to learn this for the test is not good enough for y ou. Education is an excellent tool, if used

properly , but focus more on learning rather than getting good grades.

For those of y ou that work within the sy stem that I am condemning, I do not mean to insult; I intend to

motivate. Y ou have the power to change the incompetencies of this sy stem. I know that y ou did not become a

teacher or administrator to see y our students bored. Y ou cannot accept the authority of the governing bodies

that tell y ou what to teach, how to teach it, and that y ou will be punished if y ou do not comply . Our potential

    is at stake.

  • pdfcrowd.comopen in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API

For those of y ou that are now leav ing this establishment, I say , do not forget what went on in these

classrooms. Do not abandon those that come after y ou. We are the new future and we are not going to let

tradition stand. We will break down the walls of corruption to let a garden of knowledge grow throughout

America. Once educated properly , we will have the power to do any thing, and best of all, we will only use that

power for good, for we will be cultivated and wise. We will not accept any thing at face value. We will ask

questions, and we will demand truth.

So, here I stand. I am not standing here as valedictorian by my self. I was molded by my environment, by

all of my peers who are sitting here watching me. I couldn't have accomplished this without all of y ou. It was

all of y ou who truly made me the person I am today . It was all of y ou who were my competition, y et my

backbone. In that way , we are all valedictorians.

I am now supposed to say farewell to this institution, those who maintain it, and those who stand with me

and behind me, but I hope this farewell is more of a see y ou later when we are all working together to rear a

pedagogic movement. But first, let's go get those pieces of paper that tell us that we're smart enough to do so!

Bob Francis July 9, 2011 at 4:29 PMExcellent! A++ My advice for you is to find that goal the Zen master talked about -Everyday! Finding your goal is not as easy as one may think, due in large partbecause we are not trained to think "outside of the box", as you know. Let yourheart decide what you truly want - you may need, nay, you will need to train yourmind (read: Think and Grow Rich - not necessarily to get rich, but to open yourunderstanding mind and to train your sub-conscious what and how to think. Yourgoal may well be to help the school systems change the way our children aretaught; maybe to have them fully aware of the "real world". I do know that Iwish my kids were more aware, because now that they are in their twenties, theyare wondering what they want to do with their lives.Blessings and Peace and Love and Joy to you and yours.

Oh PS. - Congratulations on your achievements:)

Kelly Hogaboom July 22, 2011 at 2:10 AMThank you so much - you are brave and wiser than many. I could have spokenthese words about my character and accomplishments when I graduated but Iwas still busy feeling the only thing important about me was my good-girl test-taker record. Today after many trials and much suffering I'm a happy personraising (unschooled) kiddos - kids far more self-validated, intelligent, caring, andbrave than I ever was. When I see young people such as yourself speaking outthis way I feel so excited for the new generation. Wonderful stuff.Reply

Jennifer S. August 15, 2011 at 7:15 AMI watched your video just now and reposted it a few times. CLEARLY TOTALLYAWESOME ERICA!!! That was great! I'm very happy you spoke truth. You aretruly very smart to speak up to make people aware. Fucking awesome! I wentthrough college working the whole time and taking honors classes and when I gotout all that praise didn't mean anything because I suddenly became andindentured servant who had to work off her $30,000 school loans.

I have had to work shitty office jobs making advertising propaganda for shittymoney-centered non-humanistic people all so I can just get to what I love whichis art. I'm so glad there are people your age smart enough to wake other peopleup so this system gets reorganized. Education should be FREE for anybody whowants to learn and it should be structured differently to bring out people's realtrue talents.Reply

Jennifer S. August 15, 2011 at 8:11 AMWhen I hear the quote, "FREEDOM isn't FREE" it kinda makes me wonder... Thenwhat is it actually? Isn't "freedom" actually a self-defining adjective? This islike saying "the state of being FREE, COSTS." Well, if something costs, then whyeven call it FREE and then tell me it costs?

This is the kind of bullshit that brainwashes stupid people. This is why youngpeople like you are awesome to make people truly realize they are conditioneddrones until they wake themselves up with self-honesty like you did.Reply

Anonymous April 17, 2012 at 4:10 PMJennifer, The phrase "Freedom isn't free" refers to this country and the"freedoms" we have compaired to other countries that don't have theprivilages we do. And to keep these freedoms from being taken awayfrom us by other jelous countries, we have to pay a price. The price beinglives lost keeping the ill intentioned parties, be it whole countries orbands of thugs, at bay and not on our soil. The price can be high at timesas it has in the past. Granted, some wars, declaired or undeclaired(unlawful) are started with ulterior motives by certain powerfulglobal financiers. But our freedom to live the way we desire is slowlydisentergrating under the current government system which has grownbeyond the powers originally intended by our founding fathers. I'mgetting off tract but our freedom does come at a cost.

I tend to think those who are able see the sea of possibilities standing on thedocks of reality often experience a deep disconnect. The more you understand ofthe world, you will see that change happens, much like the sea. To the naked eyeand one sparkling with intensity, it is maddeningly slow. But to the weatheredgaze, it is powerful as it is vast.

Here's the thing: for many, there will always be a disconnect, as well there

Here's the thing: for many, there will always be a disconnect, as well thereshould be. As the world shifts in its own reality, so will the ideals ofpossibilities. The trick is to not become burdened at the perceived gap, but to lookat with hope of what could be. This trick often goes by another name, which isthat of patience.

This is the perfect outlook for a young woman or man and gives me a sliverof hope for mankind. If all young people are thinking you do Erica, and they arereally waking from the slumber of our failing system, the United States willbecome a better place to live. The education system may be flawed, but seems tohave taught you very well. Give your parent or parents or whomever raised youan A++, too. I want my daughter and sonto read these inspiring words sometime in the future when they can comprehendthe full meaning behind this! I was never validictorian nor would I ever havebeen because your thoughts have been my thoughts while I was growing up.However this made me rebellious in my teenage years and didn't want to and wasnot interested in school anymore. When I dropped out I was on the honor roll myjunior year of high school. What was really a disappointment is when I actuallydid put some effort into my work I did fantastic and a teacher actually gave bea B- and wrote the comment on the top of my paper "Who wrote this???" meaning shedidn't believe I had the potential to write a paper like that myself and Iremember it to this day it was a paper on Beowulf. After such incidents kept mymotivation down I said enough of this. I went and got my GED which I passedwith flying colors just to get out of that wretched enviroment called school! Ipraise you for your courage, wisdom and knowledge. Being able to speak yourmind even when you know you will be criticized is one of the hardest things aperson can do! My father had me online in 1994 when I was 11. By the time I was 16 I had begunlearning my interests almost exclusively online in my schools library via theaddition of broadband internet.

As a result of skipping my English class for two weeks, to attend films at thecinema which had greater importance to me, I was let go from the class. I wasre-positioned more appropriately into another English class with a socialistleaning mentor, who liked to show films in class. However, I suspect that somebody worked in my interest to place me there, aswhen I arrived I encountered the privilege to do what I wanted, and to discusswith other thoughtful learners our interests. Political Economy, Nutrition, IT (web dev and networking) mostly.

I still showed up to my psychology class (the only interesting one I had, thanksin a large part to the mentor at the front of it), and went to history class once ina while to debate my teacher on the merits of American Imperialism.

In so doing, I became the only friend of an Iranian boy named Mohammad, whoI am friends with today (even though he was deported to Iran after 9/11)Mohammad was more studious in class than I, aiming to please his parents whowere more strict than I. Although, he did skip class with me a few times tolearn alongside me in the library, where I could usually be found mon-fri from9am-6pm, long after everyone else had gone home. One day I arrived at class, to discover afilm being shown which had a BIG impact on me at the time. It was the JuliaRoberts film about the story of Erin Brockovich, who led and won the largestclass action law suit in American history, for the cover up by PG&E of the cancercausing chemical contamination of the drinking water of a rural Californiacommunity.

Douglas Griffin July 15, 2013 at 10:44 PMNo irony in my book. Sure, she may have learned some writing skills andwide vocabulary. But those things on their own don't lead to joy insuccess. There are plenty of people out their who have many skills, butdo nothing with them. They are sad, angry, depressed, hopeless. Why? Possibly, because theywere never challenged or allowed to discover how to find joy in life.

Anyone, at any stage or status of life, can wake up and realize that thestate they are in is not the state they want to be in--that they are nothappy. They can realize that they have been led along, instead of receivingguidance and encouragement to chart their own course, to make mistakesand learn from them, to discover themselves and what drives them andgives them joy.

Education should not be all facts and figures. It should also provide anindividual with a tangible sense of self worth, empowerment, and theknowledge that they can find joy in anything that they choose to do, andthat those things can make a difference. This was her message.

A very, very good speech from such a young woman. I am so glad that the publicschool system hasn't deceived everyone of it's students. You mentioned some keypoints about (Corporations) (Secretive government) and also the end result of thepublic school system to create servants of the system rather than critical andcreative thinkers. I would like to encourage you to learn more about the(Corpratocracy) by reading a book called (CONFESSIONS OF AN ECONOMICHIT MAN)by John Perkins and about the (secretive government) AKA "One WorldGovernment" or "The New World Order" if you Google those you will find tons ofevidence. The reason why I tell you this is because it will bring to light thedriving force behind all the things that are happening in the education, financial, political, medical and even the false religious systems of the world. I wouldalso like to encourage you to discover the reality of Christian faith in the Bible. Ihave been studying it for over 13 years now, and can tell you that most of theprophesies in it have been fulfilled and only a few left to be fulfilled. Here is awebsite of bible related archaeology that proves the Bible is truewyattmuseum.com and world history also proves that it is accurate to the letter. The truth in all of this I pray will lead you and others to eternal salvation inthe Kingdom of Heaven, and the fact that the one and only GOD that created allthings Loves You and wants to have a relationship with you now, and in lifeeverlasting!!! In closing you will find that this world is run by corrupt andgodless men that have no good intent for you or I, their plans are from the enemyhimself, BUT God and His children (believers) win in the end and live forever inparadise with Him,,,Learn about Gods saving plan for your life in serving Him, andin the Life to come, and His son JESUS CHRIST that paid the price for our sinsPast Present and future. I definitely agree with the speech to a large extent but not completely. When Iwas 15, I had the same thoughts, especially being in IB and having to cram myhigh school courses alongside first year university courses, then passing two setsof standardized tests (one provincial and one international). Life felt quite bleakand pointless. But we're young, and the world is an exciting place. Yes, the worldmay put rules around you to try to coop you in, to try to restrain you, so it is ourjob to break free of these boundaries. We're all the same on the inside. Don't feellike you're more enlightened than anyone else. You might be the one to put it intowords, and it resonated immensely within everybody because it's something we allfeel.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that institution does NOT control you life. Youcontrol your life. You may choose to have it clip your wings or you can become abystander. Rabbi Yonason Goldson August 2, 2013 at 2:44 PMDear Erica,

I came across this blog by chance while searching for an old article of my own -- Goldson is not a common name. As a high school teacher of twenty years, Iwonder if your teachers are as impressed with you as I would be if you weremy student. Clearly, you were fortunate to have a teacher like Donna Bryan whoencouraged you to think critically... sadly, there are too many teachers afraidbeing challenged by students who think.

However, do not assume that your years of diligence and discipline were wasted. The best rock musicians were classically trained; the greatest writers andartists spent years of painstaking effort developing their techniques. discipline is the foundation of authentic intellectual creativity -- the problemcomes from never departing from the mundane and reaching for the supernal.

Daniel Patrick Moynahan famously said, "You are entitled to your own opinion; youare not entitled to your own facts." Nevertheless, most people today place morevalues on feelings than on facts. If you can take your talents, your training, andyour inspiration and combine them with vision and determination, you can trulyaccomplish all that you hope to achieve.

May you have great success in all your efforts.

Daniel F.C. October 30, 2013 at 11:18 PMI guess she is just calling stuff by its name, and you have to criticize thecurrent state of things right now cause the US is not doing really good, not only in education. She doesnt have to become a teacher to make achange, she already inspired hundreds of people with her words! its up tothe listeners as well and not only up to the speaker to act. Its like thisguy said: hear the truth, from whoever speaks it.

As a secondary teacher of twenty years, Idoubt that your educators are as inspired with you as I might be whether youwere my learner. Hopefully, Erica's speech will be able to introduce a newera where students actually look forward to school, rather than dread cominginto an environment where creativity and individuality are suppressed.Reply

and with out sense that "I am doing the work". To find the Zen, you will put your100 % effort ( that will be equal to 25% of the total work ) your Master will putin 25 % of the work and God's Grace will do the rest of 50% of the work. It is to proveto you that you will not attain by your efforts ONLY, that the Zen Master has toldthat story.Best wishes,Reply

Teci Pulido October 5, 2013 at 2:14 PMPowerful speech, and how timely to read it on World Teachers' Day. :) I've beenteaching undergrad physics to engineers for five years and counting. Thecoursework is rigid in content and in execution, but there's still enough room toinspire students: encouraging alternative solutions to a problem, reminding whythey need this for their work in the future, showing fun applications and evenanalogies to current events or life in general. Teachers need to remind the class*why* something needs to be learned, so we ourselves need to be convinced of thesignificance of each topic. Every now and then we have "joke time" to keep thingslight, and I always start the class by writing a verse from the Bible. I've always been an outlier, anti-establishment student, so now I am working*against* the flaws of the system but working from within. I'm happy to say thatmany students respond to my approach without compromising the standards ofthe school (and ultimately the companies who will hire them).Of course, the issue of which subjects to teach would be up to the schools andlocal government. And parents/families should also reclaim their responsibilityas the primary educators and role models of their children. Thank you for this video. God bless and be with you more!Reply

U know, I will graduate in about 2 weeks and now that it is over I feel the sameway u did with respect to the fact that the past is long gone. I wasted a lot ofmy fucking time and mind in stupid prerequisites to go into the faculty ofbusiness. Thank god I am not you and I did like shit in said prerequisites so Idid not get in. I instead had to go with my original plan, go study economics!! thatsubject I always felt attracted to. Yeah I do like econ, but I enjoy history morethan economics, and cooking and music and fucking fancy photographs (tho I canttake a decent one). I noticed that almost at the end of my degree and it was alittle late for me, tho I made my last months worth a lot. Well, if you did go touniversity you should be close to getting your certificate of 'fit for employment',well good luck with that shit b/c in this economy you cannot even get a decent job,the system you criticized is not even able to enslave us fucking decently. Youknow, I was gonna give u some advice for the remainder of your schooling period, but what can I tell to the girl that when finished high school came to the samerealizations I came to when finishing college?? (and worded them way better),maybe just this: fucking enjoy your last years of schooling, it is the last time intime when LEARNING is so constant (tho sometimes youll be learning shit) and

vanz73 June 19, 2014 at 4:03 PMAs a dyslexic I struggled hugely with grade school--a "B" grade was a greatgrade for me. However, that rote learning process helped me uncover my mostimportant lesson in school--specifically how to cope with learning with mydifferent mind. College was challenging, but less so as I took more advancedclasses. My masters program, in finance, was very challenging and ridiculouslyrewarding--my final GPA was 3.6 (undergrad was 2.6). My point is that there istruth in your words but not as much as most would ascribe. While many will bedrawn to your call to action to overturn the current program, I don't believe itis as broken as you describe. And the uncollege movement is driven in part by ourcountry's obsession with everyone getting a college degree. That's just not thebest path for everyone. However getting a degree, in any subject, helps manypeople think more effectively, understand how to break down problems andcreate solutions, sometimes innovative ones. For every Mark Zuckerberg whomade his billions dropping out of college there are tens of thousands who didn'tbut still dropped out of college. I admire your spirit and I expect you'llaccomplish great things. However I also expect your views will moderate overtime, particularly if you become a parent.Reply
