Dear Erris Eye Readers,

What achievements by our young Erris people in the world of sport. We are very proud of you all. Tommy Conroy had his home coming to Geesala after the Mayo minors won the All-Ireland. Tommy, you are our Man of the Match! Jacqui Lynch of Golden Gloves Boxing Club and Ciara Ginty of Geesala Boxing Club both competed in the World Youth and Junior Championships in Bulgaria last week and both did their clubs proud. Ciara took a gold medal in her weight and Jacqui won a bronze medal. Well done to both girls for their individual achievements. All the hard work paid off! And of course the Kiltane lads won the Intermediate County final on Sunday beating Kilmaine 2-18 to 2-10. Táimíd ar bharr an domhain!

Issue 20 has come round very quickly. We are fast approaching number 24 when we will be one year in existence! We hope you are enjoying the Erris Eye. We are continuously getting emails and messages from readers who say they love to pick up a copy or view it online. We have reached 500 likes on Facebook and are delighted with the milestone. It is very reassuring to get such positive feedback. Thanks to our readers, contributors and advertisers for your support. We distribute 2,000 copies around Erris every 2 weeks. This issue includes some more local information; what's on in Erris, general information which may be of interest. There's a focus on men's health with an update from 'Men on the Move' and a piece from the Blue September campaign. We have our first birthday greeting in this issue for twins Cathal and James who are 3 years old and so cute! We would like to congratulate Helen McDonnell on her first anniversary in Belmullet with Ellies Fashions. It's fantastic to see start up businesses in Erris particularly in the current times. Lunasa (the new craft shop in the town) has October craft classes on offer with some pics of the September ones. We continue to support and encourage shopping local in our area. It means so much to our communities when you spend your euros in Erris because you are supporting jobs in Erris and therefore keeping communities alive.

We announced our Host of the Year for 2013-2014 Luke Worth Our Lady's Secondary School and our Hostess of the Year 2013-2014 Caitlin Fisher St Brendan's Vocational School. Name Club Year. We would like to thank St. Brendan’s Vocational School and Our Lady’s Secondary School for all their support of the club. No Name Clubs are run by volunteers for young people aged 15 years + who come together in a safe and lively environment where there’s fun, friendship and enjoyment without the pressure of alcohol or other drugs. No Name Clubs were founded to provide an alternative to pub culture for young people in Ireland. They demonstrate a lifestyle in which the use of alcohol or drugs is seen as unnecessary to the enjoyment of a happy, cheerful and fulfilling social life for young people. The Erris No Name Club is run by a volunteer committee chaired by Ann Lynskey.

Bangor Erris Angling club was established in 1970. The Club waters, including a stretch of the Owenmore River - which runs through the town of Bangor Erris - and also Carrowmore Lake - located just outside the town of Bangor Erris, have without doubt become one of the most productive salmon and sea trout fisheries in the Island of Ireland.

The club which has a growing number of members also offers fishing to non club members and angling tourists on a daily or weekly basis. The club promotes fly fishing for salmon and seat trout primarily, though spinning for Salmon is allowed up until the end of March on Carrowmore Lake. The Bangor Erris Angling Club Fishery has become renowned for its premier angling throughout Ireland and Europe, attracting visitors from all parts of the EU as well as further afield with anglers having come from Brazil and the United States. The fishery is very unique because it offers fantastic angling opportunities for both advanced and beginner anglers who can choose from either Carrowmore Lake or the Owenmore River depending on which suits their abilities best, with the river offering for the most part obstruction free Fly Fishing.The Club has also completed extensive development works on both the river and the lake over the past years and is constantly looking at ways to further improve the experience for the visiting angler. Salmon fishing on the fly is very popular in Bangor Erris because anglers have a very good chance of catching a fish at any time throughout the season either in the river or the lake which is quite unusual. Many fisheries in Ireland and indeed Mayo 'switch off' at

various stages throughout the angling season but this is certainly not the case in Bangor Erris. Both the lake and the river fish best at various stages throughout the year - Carrowmore Lake is renowned for being one of the most productive Spring Salmon fisheries in Ireland with consistent Spring Salmon catches each year usually from February till late May or early JUne with Salmon up to 16lbs having being landed recently on the fly. The Owenmore River will fish well - depending on weather of course - producing spring fish from Late April right through until June and even beyond. Carrowmore Lake then switches from Spring Salmon fishing to Grilse fishing usually in late June into July, and at this time the lake also offers absolutely superb Sea Trout Fishing to the fly. The Owenmore river really comes into its own in late summer leaving most other Salmon rivers behind in terms of catch numbers and the river will fish really well for Salmon 'Harvest fish' right until the end of the Season in late September.

A RESCUE PLAN FOR THE MULLET’S LOST HISTORY We at Turas Siar are setting up a 20 week non-academic programme for anyone who is interested in local history of the parish of Kilmore as handed down to us from previous generations the way they would have heard it from their ancestors. In the old days people sat around the open fire, talked about the past and in turn told stories about great deeds and events, giants and famous people. They would also relate to monks, holy people, churches and burial grounds and of course there were many stories about ghosts, spirits and the other world. This area being a sea-faring community many stories were passed on about pirates, smugglers and sea-faring in general. Listening to the older people talk amongst themselves they had a wonderful knowledge of the local ancestry, who was related to who and where they came from. Unfortunately, this way of life is long passed by and what we would be doing is recreating all this once again we will be sitting around the open fire one evening each week, we will discuss a few subjects. We will start back as far as local history goes and take it forward in time each week. It will be based on a Comhra Cois Tine similar to what we ran here a few years ago, but what makes it special this time is that everyone will be adding to the knowledge and history relating to all aspects of the parish. It will be bi-lingual therefore you will be able to build up a complete knowledge and history like it has never been put together before and from this to help you understand it better. Some recordings will be made available to you after the programme has run its course. Stationery, handouts and folders will be provided for all information relevant to the subject in question. A half hour talk will be given at the start of each evening to enlighten everyone in what we will be discussing and then anyone who wishes to is welcome to join in so that we all learn from each other and therefore add to what we already know. It is hoped to keep the conversation light hearted and make it enjoyable for everyone attending. There will be a break for refreshments for half an hour and for the last half an hour of the evening the agenda will be set out for the following week. During the course of this programme we will be forming a Kilmore Historical Society. It is hoped that a certificate will be issued on completion of the programme. Unfortunately, a maximum of 25 people would be practical each evening. The workshop at Lúnasa has now opened and the Autumn/Winter courses are now underway. The opening event was a lively birthday craft party followed by the first class, furniture painting. So many people have said how pleased they are to see the building in use again. It's great to have the space to have so many courses and activities over the winter months.In the workshop there is a kiln and wheel for use in the pottery class and a good selection of tools for the Children's Crafts. Crafters from all over Mayo are coming to teach the courses such as pottery, calligraphy, sewing, crochet and many more. So it looks set to be a fun winter in the workshop.

Marketing in a Digital World is a Win Win for Erris Erris is leading the way by bringing businesses and job seekers together through a new initiative which aims to provide job seekers with digital marketing skills while assisting businesses develop their online potential. The course is geared towards job seekers who wish to work in marketing at an entry level. On a weekly basis there are vacancies advertised for people with Digital Marketing skills in Mayo so it is a growth area where there are jobs available. Recruitment has already begun for this nine week training course, that is starting on the 17th of October in Belmullet and will run one day a week until the 12th of December. Course content will include: Definitions of Marketing; Identifying and Profiling Customers; Branding; Sales; Advertising; Promotion; PR. Website Marketing; Emarketing; Facebook for Business (Intermediate and Advanced) ; Social Networking Tools such as Twitter; LinkedIn; YouTube; Google Plus; Instagram, Flikr & Pinterest. Businesses are currently being asked to submit an expression of interest if they wish to be involved in this exciting new initiative. This course is free of charge to Job Seekers and is funded under the Local and Community Development Programme, which is managed by Mayo North East. Men on the Move Autumn Programme 2013 · Are you aged 30+, male and not very physically active? · Do you want to feel fitter, have fun, have more energy and meet new people? · If you do why not get involved in the Men on the Move at the nearest location to you in Mayo What is Men on the Move? Men on the Move is an activity programme which is aimed at men aged 30 and over to get them active, have fun and improve fitness levels. It involves weekly/twice weekly activity sessions which are leader led. You don’t need to be fit to take part- the training sessions are structured so that you can find the level appropriate for you to join and progress your fitness at a pace to suit you! Who’s Involved? The programme is a joint initiative by Mayo Sports Partnership and HSE West. It is also Supported by Croí, Mid West Radio, Local Athletic Clubs, Family Resource Centres and Mens Sheds Groups. What To wear? Tracksuit or jogging bottoms and a t-shirt or sweatshirt are best, jeans are not comfortable to train in and they are really uncomfortable when wet. -Wear Layers - It may be cold some nights but you will warm quickly so a couple of layers are much easier than one big jumper. -Waterproofs - bring lightweight waterproof top and bottoms. -Please wear trainers to all sessions. Get Active! The benefits of being active for physical and mental health are huge. Being active helps release chemicals in your brain (endorphins), which have a positive effect on your mood, not to mention the benefits to your heart, lungs, muscles and bones. Being active is also a great way to manage stress. How can I get involved? A number of information meetings are taking place at 8 locations across the county on the week beginning 30th Sept. See attached table of meetings with details of venue, date, time and leader. Select the venue nearest you and come along and get your body mass index measured, obtain information on healthy eating / exercise and sign up to an 8

Why not give it a go! Is there any cost? The aim of the initiative is to encourage men to take part in physical activity under the guidance of a qualified professional. For established areas after the initial taster week which will be free participants will be asked to pay a nominal fee. For new areas such as Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis and Manulla the initial 8 week programme will be subsidized. Participants on the programme will receive weekly supervised sessions, Body Mass Index monitoring, Nutrition Workshop and information logbooks. Physical Activity for Everyone Regular physical activity can help you reduce the risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Increased levels of physical activity will help reduce body fat and maintain a healthy weight. How Active Should I be? Regular physical activity actually gives you more energy and helps you to relax. Being active is fun for all the family. Research show that children whose parents are active are more than 5 times as likely to be active than those whose parents are not. Adults should aim to do at least 30 minutes moderate intensity activity 5 days a week. Short bouts of at least 10 minutes can be accumulated.

Wonderful WEEE Attendance The free electrical recycling day on September 21 in Belmullet - organised by WEEE Ireland and supported by Mayo Co. Co. - was a great success. Dozens upon dozens of household appliances have been taken out of the waste stream and will be recycled – thanks to your help! Any item that runs on electricity (or batteries) has the potential to cause damage to the environment, and also to human health, if it is not disposed of responsibly. If electrical and electronic products are disposed of in landfill sites, millions of tonnes of materials that could be recovered and reused for new products are being lost. Recovery of these materials would reduce the need to extract more raw materials for the manufacture of new products. Another benefit of recycling is the saving of energy achieved if raw materials could be recycled instead of mined. For example, aluminum mining uses 20 times the amount of energy it takes to recycle the same amount. Apart from all these facts and figures, clearing out old computers, TVs and any other clutter (in a responsible manner) is great for your house and for your mind – very therapeutic!

Ingredients Extra Lean Mince- 2lbs.Egg- 1.Mixed Herbs- 1 tablespoon.Onion- 1/2 diced.Garlic- 5 cloves, minced.Tomato Purée- 1 tablespoon.Oxo Cube- 1. crumbled.Method Form the meatballs from extra lean steak mince mixed with egg and mixed herbs.Place in a pan on a medium heat and gently turn.Sauté onions and garlic before adding passata, 1tsp tomato puree and a crumbled oxo cube.Add the sauce to the pan with the meatballs. Simmer gently. Serve with ¼ plate whole wheat spaghetti

2014 will be our Year! People all over Ireland and, indeed abroad, have been experiencing football fever over the last few weeks, and there will continue to be celebrations in the east and the west over the coming days. Nevertheless, all will return to normal soon, in order to prepare for 2014! Similarly, other people in Ireland (and elsewhere) have already been preparing for a different kind of endeavour next year – the Year of Adventure. Early in September, it was announced that Ireland was chosen to host the Adventure Travel World Summit. The prestigious conference will take place in Killarney in 2014 and is a high profile marketing opportunity for Ireland. There will be 700 tour operators, media, agents and tourism agents from all over the world, discussing and debating the fast-growing travel sector. At around the time the announcement was made, representatives from Erris Beo were attending the Adventure Tourism Forum in Co. Clare. The event had over 40 international adventure tour operators. After the forum, 17 of these people travelled to Erris, where they enjoyed some of the activities and events that we have on offer here. Naturally, they fell in love with the place! Along with Erris Beo, Fáilte Ireland had organised this familiarisation trip for these representatives, the purpose of which provides a ‘snapshot’ look at the region and gives them a genuine experience, so that they can then recommend the place to their customers. The group had a fantastic time experiencing all that the Barony has to offer, including a guided walk of Erris Head, a stroll around Belmullet town, and a trip on David Tyrell’s ‘Wavesweeper’. David said, “It was a great opportunity to show off our beautiful area, and I was delighted to host the boat trip. When we got back to the pier, the group were amazed that they were able to sample the lobster that they had just caught. It was a true adventure for them – they were blown away! ” The visit to Erris is also connected to the marketing of the Wild Atlantic Way, which is becoming operational next year - this provides a timely opportunity to promote it at the Adventure Travel World Summit. The booming adventure travel sector provides plenty of opportunities and huge potential for tourism in the Barony of Erris. Hiking, cycling, water sports and other activities are becoming increasingly popular with travellers and tourists, particularly Europeans. Fáilte Ireland recently published its most comprehensive examination of the adventure tourism market, examining key activities and illustrating where the future potential lies in this fast-growing industry. The research reveals many insights and interesting facts. For example, in terms of walking, Ireland offers the highest potential for both domestic and overseas markets, and in terms of cycling, there is great potential with the German market, due to the high proportion of Germans who cycle abroad. Also, according to the study, the activity visitor tends to stay in Ireland for longer than the average tourist, and they tend to spend approximately 40% more too. Unsurprisingly, Mayo is one of the most popular counties for those wanting an active holiday. The phone service has staff calling elderly people at an agreed time to check on their wellbeing. Seirbhisi Curam Chill Chomáin Teo have received a very good response to the Morning Call service and that it is really appreciated by the people who have registered to receive the calls. Those who want to get a call from us simply call us and decide what time of day they would like to receive a call. The whole aim of the service is to make sure that people are safe and well in their own homes. They can chat to our callers about things which are worrying them and we can give them information about services in the community. We also have an alert element to the service. If a call isn't answered, we will have the number two people supplied by the family and can ring them to check that everything is okay if we have concerns about the person. At the moment, our Morning Call is making regular phone calls to around a half a dozen elderly people, mostly living on their own, and that is expected to grow coming into winter. Town & Shore Status Belmullet Tidy Towns is happy with recent clean-ups in the area. The Transition Year students from St. Brendan’s College, Belmullet, did an

excellent job cleaning up the south side of the shore (at Shore Road) in aid of the International Coastal Clean-Up, run by the Ocean Conservancy, for which An Taisce is the national coordinator for Ireland. And the self-starting students didn’t stop at the shore – they also continued to tidy up various areas around the town. Maith sibh! On another day, three people got together to clean up the north side of the shore – between the pool and the pier. In order to gather information for the Ocean Conservancy during the shore clean-ups, the types and amounts of litter were recorded. These are just some examples: wood, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, plastic bags, bale wrap, sweet wrappers, cans, tins, glass bottles, bottle caps, lollipop sticks, pipes, Styrofoam, pallets, rope, string, bricks, cigarettes, lighters, tiles, slates, gloves, toys, an umbrella, a dog muzzle, a flower pot, a buoy, a tyre, a bucket, an engine, a pair of trousers, and a pair of tracksuit bottoms! While we can be pleased that we gathered all this litter, unfortunately, the shore is always in need of cleaning, due to the fact that litter and rubbish from elsewhere is washed up by the tides. However, we can try to stop the litter that is being dumped there from pedestrians along Shore Road. Please, please don’t litter! Similarly, we can reduce the need for clean-ups around the town if we can just please stop littering! This goes for all kinds of rubbish, no matter how small or big, e.g. lollipop sticks or pallets! And always remember to bin your butt! Delight in Dublin! If you haven’t already heard – Belmullet did very well in the national TidyTowns competition on September 9! A large group of people

travelled to Dublin on the day to attend the ceremony. We were delighted to hear that we won a Silver Medal – again! We gained four points, bringing us up to 301. We also achieved a Commendation in the county category. Comhghairdeas to Moynalty, Co. Meath - the overall winner, with 316 points. Congrats also to some other towns in Mayo: Westport won a Gold Medal, Murrisk won a Silver Medal and Castlebar won a Bronze Medal. Westport also won the County Award, while Murrisk was Highly Commended. Elsewhere, Kilmaine won the Endeavour Award. Closer to home, well done to Ballycroy who got 271 points and to Bangor Erris with 258 points! We have been overwhelmed with people’s reactions and positive responses – from near and far - via FaceBook, emails and text messages. Thank you all so much for your support! Let’s remember that we must carry on working all year round. Other towns in our population category are improving at a fast pace, e.g.

Swinford gained 6 points and Crossmolina gained ten! Belmullet has experienced large increases before (we gained 13 in

2008 and 14 in 2003) – it can be done! Let’s keep up the good work and aim for the national title!
