    Elementary Faculty Learning

One of the most important features of the ISM community is theunmistakable appetite of all stakeholders for continuouslearning. Our students demonstrate it on a daily basis in ourclassrooms and on the playground through their independenceand collaboration. Our parents continue to show their intent bycontinually engaging in all of our parent sessions targetingresearch and learning. And our faculty continually strive tobetter themselves in their quest to implement the most up todate methodology on best instructional practice. Two weeks

ago, we had over a hundred of our parents engage with theideas presented by Kath Murdoch on inquiry-basedlearning. On Tuesday, we had over sixty Grades 3 and 4parents attend a session on Measures of Academic Progress(MAP) testing. Today, teachers spent the whole day workingtogether on various elements of our curriculum and itsimplementation.

    We had:

Preschool teachers gaining swimming certification, tosupport their students as they learn to swim

Art and PE teams working on their written curriculumoutcomes and how they are assessed

Music teachers watching recorded lessons of their ownteaching, and isolating elements of effective instructionalpractice

Classroom teachers looking at what elements comprise a‘balanced literacy program’ and how we facilitate this. Thissession included sharing and building upon ourunderstandings of how we best support our students intheir learning of spelling, writing and reading.

Classroom teachers defining a set of essential instructionalagreements for our literacy program. They identified the

following six key elements, which will occur every day, in every classroom. These are all based upon what theresearch indicates about reading and writing.

    1. Every child reads something he or she chooses.

    2. Every child reads accurately. 3. Every child reads something he or she understands.

    4. Every child writes something personally meaningful. 5. Every child talks with peers about reading and writing. 6. Every child listens to a fluent adult read aloud.

All our teachers collaborating on producing a series of ‘lessons’, at each grade level, targeting the four key concepts(Safety, Touch, Advocacy & Responsibility) in our Healthy Relationships curriculum.

It really was a great day of learning.

    Have a wonderful long weekend.
