When I was a student, I wasn’t perfect eitherI missed the odd lecture, I came to the occasional lecture hungover, and I didn’t always read everything that was set.
However, I do have the benefit of hindsight, and lots of experience of seeing other students succeed and fail, so when I make suggestions, I am doing so to help you
We often have a huge workload to deal withTeaching you is not the only thing we do. We are not saying that you are not important however you must appreciate that you are not the only part of our job and occasionally other things must take priority.
Help us help you by being professional and if you need us give us plenty of notice. Please also remember that we say >600 students per year so please don’t be offended if we don’t remember your name at first or don’t recognise you.
Sometimes we’re bored tooThere are always modules and lectures that students don’t like. We get the feedback, we know you hate it, and the honest truth is that sometimes it’s not the highlight of our life either. We really do our best to make it interesting, but sometimes it’s just not possible
You may think it’s irrelevant, but it’s there for a reason, and usually when you get towards your more senior years, you’ll start to understand why we spent time on it. In the meantime, suck it up and do the work. We do.
You’re not as subtle as you think you areI can hear you chatting. I can see you texting. I notice when you are asleep. Facebook, Yik Yak and Twitter are not private – your comments often get back to us
Sometimes we’ve forgotten what it’s like to not understand this stuff.When you’ve been doing something for years and years and years, it can be hard to put yourself in the position of people who have never come across it before. So ask the questions. If you don’t get it, read more, ask more, and keep at us until you do get it. We’re trying, I promise.
Ask the stupid questions now. I might be surprised that you don’t understand, but I would always rather know now, than find out when I mark your paper that you’ve misunderstood something fundamental. We hate that sinking feeling when you read an answer that shows that the student really just didn’t get it. If you ask now, we can work it through, and the rest of the course will make so much more sense.
It’s not about the grade that you getI get it, you want a first –who doesn’t? But you need to get away from the outcome and focus on the process. We teach you things that are not assessed, that doesn’t mean they are less important.
The grade you get might get you an interview but your knowledge and your graduate attributes get you the job, but more importantly keep you in the job
We have a life outside the officeAfter 5pm on weekdays and over the weekend my daughter gets my undivided attention.
If you email me in the evenings or at weekends I will not read your correspondence until I’m back in the office.
Please don’t put me in the position of having to say no/ignore you/work all night to finish everything. A little bit of planning on your part, and we should all get what we need.
Our life outside the office may occasionally overlap with yoursExeter is not a big place. You may see me in the city centre, at a bar, at Waitrose or walking between campuses.

Summative assessment
Part OneYou are required to search for a peer reviewed empirical article each week. The article should be closely aligned with the topic that is being taught that week. You should read the paper and prepare a short description to include in a tweet (i.e. <150 characters).
You will then tweet a link to the article and a short explanation of what the article comprises. You must tweet your article during the “tweet break” during the seminar.
Failure to submit a minimum of eight tweets during the
allocated times will restrict your final grade.
If there is evidence that you have submitted several of your tweets on the same day (i.e., at the end of the module rather than during tweet breaks) you will receive not receive the additional 16% points
on offer.

Part TwoYou must select four of your tweets and write an annotated bibliography.
An annotated bibliography entry consists of two components: the Citation and the Annotation
An annotated bibliography is a list of articles where each reference (written in APA 6th style) is followed by a (> 500words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph.
The total word count must not exceed 2000 words. You reference list and tweet table does not contribute to the 2000 word count.
