Instil right thoughts intothe youth

The government of Myanmar isworking towards a peaceful and developednation through the united force of nationalraces and highly-qualified human resourceswho are full of Union Spirit as the unity ofnational races is necessary for peace andstability and highly-qualified humanresources for national development.

A look at the international situation ofthe 21st century shows that the whole worldis faced with political, economic andeducational challenges unprecedentedthroughout history. At a time like this, it isrequired to enhance the calibre of the entirepeople through a sound educationalfoundation. Only then will the perpetuity ofthe Union and sustainable development forposterity be possible and the nation and thepeople be able to stand tall in the internationalcommunity.

Union Spirit is the soul of the nationand the people. Historical evidence showsthat colonialists had constantly tried to breakit but in vain. Therefore, all the nationalraces will have to continue working hardtogether in unity in order that the Union canlast as long as the world exists and keep pacewith the international community.

The youth of today are the leaders oftomorrow and they will have to shoulder theduties of the State in the future. It is the dutyof teachers to educate and nurture the youth. Therefore, we would like to call on teachersto equip themselves with strong nationalconvictions, to instil right thoughts into theirstudents and lead them onto the right path.

NEW YORK, 7 July —Cooler than average weatherpatterns in the US northeast, attributed to the solarcycle, will likely persist for the rest of the summer, forecasters said.

There will be spikes of summer weather,AccuWeather.com reported on Monday, but weatherpatterns that have prevailed so far will probably last.

This year represents a low point for sunspots,NASA said. Studies indicate the lower the sunspots, the less bright the sun, which could translate to lessheating of Earth, although many other factors couldalso be pertinent.

In addition, a dip in the jet stream during the nextfew weeks will keep New England, New York andthe northern portions of Pennsylvania and New Jer-sey relatively cool. The Mid-Atlantic states will ex-perience more warmth and less rain, AccuWeatherpredicts. This summer is not expected to be anotheryear without a summer, such as occurred in 1816 whenthere was massive crop destruction and killing frostsall summer, the report said.—Internet

CHICAGO, 7 July—Sleepless people sometimes usethe Internet to get through the night. Now a small studyshows promising results for insomniacs with nineweeks of Internet-based therapy.

No human therapist is involved. The Internet soft-ware gives advice, even specific bedtimes, based onusers’ sleep diaries. Patients learn better sleep habits— like avoiding daytime naps — through stories, quiz-zes and games.

“This is a very interactive, tailored, personalizedprogramme,” said study co-author Frances Thorndikeof the University of Virginia Health System, whohelped design the software, called Sleep Healthy Us-ing the Internet, or SHUTi.

Such software could one day be a low-cost alter-native for some patients, Thorndike said. And it couldbe the only non-drug option for people who live inareas without trained specialists, she said.

bridge. Therefore, I gazedawestruck at the bridgefrom the approachstructure. Then, I cameto realize why localpeople of Mon State callThanlwin Bridge(Mawlamyine), a dreamcome true.

Previously, localpeople of Mon State,Kayin State andTaninthayi Division hadto grapple with a varietyof challenges to get acrossand use the ThanlwinRiver by Z-craft, by ship

and by motorboat. Incontrast, now the swiftcurrent no longer forms anatural barrier betweenthe two sides of it due toan all-weather transportfacility. Local people are, therefore, just proud of thebridge of their dreams.

Thanlwin Bridge(Mawlamyine) has amotorway and a railroadon it. The length of themotorway is 11,575 feet, and that of the railroad,21,678 feet. The bridge isthe longest of its kind inMyanmar. The project forconstruction of the bridgewas launched on 18 March2000, and the facility wasput into commission on 5

February 2005. Therailroad was built on 19January 2003 andlaunched on 17 January2006.

Thanlwin by natureis a violent river full oflands of rock mass. So, toconstruct a bridge over theThanlwin River was justlike a dream in the past. However, now there havebeen seven bridgesspanning the ThanlwinRiver owing to thebenevolent attitude, whichthe government shows

towards national brethren, and the calibres ofMyanmar engineers.

As a result of such aprudent project, localpeople of Mon State,Kayin State andTaninthayi Division cantravel by train and by landto any other region acrossthe nation at any times. And the bridge helpsfurther cement theamicable relationsbetween national peopleand improve the transportof local goods to other

regions, thus ensuringswift commodity flow.

The 10 above-180-foot bridges thegovernment hasconstructed so far in MonState for comfort andconvenience of the peoplemake superb contributiontowards both regional andnational development.

The Ministry ofConstruction not onlyimplements bridgeprojects but also upgrades

the present roads in MonState. In the process, it hasupgraded Sittoung-Mottam Section ofYangon-Mawlamyine-Ye-Dawei-Myeik Road toa 24-foot-wide one; theinternal road ofMawlamyine to a 74-foot-wide one; many roads inMudon, Thanbyuzayatand Ye, to 44-foot-wideones; and Mawlamyine-Hpa-an Road linking MonState and Kayin State to a

24-foot-wide one. So,people can travel fromone place to another inthe regions withconvenience in a shorttime.

A trip to MonState bears witness torapid development ofMon State that is farbetter than thatpreviously.

(from page 16)golden statute of Tatmadaw members and nationalpeople.

Along Maha Bandoola Road to the downtownarea, we saw pleasant sight of the road decorated withlandscaping plants, flower beds and casuarinas plantson both sides. And at the junction of Maha BandoolaPark, the roads were coping with heavy traffic, mostof which were motorcycles and bicycles. Pathein hasdeveloped a lot if compared with the conditions Ifound in my last visit to it.

In Maha Bandoola Park was the statue of MahaBandoola standing magnificently. I noticed that thewhole Pathein was hustle and bustle with trade activi-ties. Then, we visited the office of Pathein TownshipDevelopment Affairs Committee and met ExecutiveOfficer (Deputy Director) U Soe Win.

In response to my question about regional devel-opment, he said, "We are working diligently in com-

pliance with the guidance of the Head of State, super-vision of Ayeyawdy Division Peace and DevelopmentCouncil and directives of our ministry for develop-ment of urban and rural areas. We have a plan to growmany more landscaping plants along the roads to keepour township clean and attractive. We dredge thedrainage ditches every day. And we will plan to up-grade the roads."

It was heartening to learn that they would have tocarry out follow-up programmes to achieve the goal.

U Hla Soe said, "They would continue to decorateMoelaywatha Roundabout, the traffic island ofAungthukha Road, the clock tower, and other busyplaces with landscaping plants and flower beds. Up tonow, we have laid concrete on Strand Road for about4000 feet. Previously, this road was flooded wheneverthe Ngawun River was swollen. Now, such necessarythings are no more. And we maintain the bridges, roadsand parks in the township."

Strand Road in Pathein was a tarred one. We also

saw stockpiles of sand and gravels along Strand Roadto construct buildings.

The Town Hall of Pathein was on Strand Road, and near the hall was the notice board for publicknowledge.

On the left of Strand Road were departmentaloffices, Pathein Market and the road to Chaungthaand Ngwehsaung beach resorts. Pathein Hotel and the50-foot-high clock tower were found decorated withsodium bulbs and coloured lamps.

In the township, Kanthaya and Bandoola parkswere found like recreation centres, and attractive andbeautiful with beds of flowers of various species, landscaping plants, green lawns, statues of animals, fountains and lake.

Therefore, it can be deduced from the scenes andthings we found during our trip that Pathein is gettingprosperous considerably.

Experts warn of reef extinction byend of century

BEIJING, 7 July — Wild-life experts warn that theworld's coral reefs may beextinct by the end of thiscentury unless the amountof carbon dioxide (CO2) inthe atmosphere is cut down.

At a meeting in Londonon Monday, leading wild-life experts claimed that thepredicted pace of emissionsmeans a level of 450 partsper million of CO2 in theatmosphere will be reachedby 2050. The emissionswill lead to increasingly

acidic oceans and warmingwater temperatures, whichwill kill off the coral reefsin the following decades.

“The kitchen is on fireand it’s spreading aroundthe house,” said AlexRogers of the ZoologicalSociety of London and theInternational Programmeon the State of the Ocean.

“If we act quickly anddecisively we may be ableto put it out before the dam-age becomes irreversible,”he added.

Coral reefs are importantnurseries and shelters forfish and other sea life.

They also protect coast-lines, provide a criticalsource of food for millionsof people, attract touristsand are potential store-house of medicines for can-cer and other diseases.

The biggest is the GreatBarrier Reef, a collection of2,900 reefs along 2,100 kmof Australia's north eastcoast in a marine park thesize of Germany.—Internet

Keeping blood sugar in check goodfor the heart

Blood clotsrisk up

travelBEIJING, 7 July — A re-

view of past researchconfirm that a long-dis-tance travel could signifi-cantly increase the riskfor developing bloodclots in people’s legs, ac-cording to media reportson Tuesday.

The researchersanalyzed 14 previousstudies and found out thatthe risk grows with thelength of the trip.

The risk climbedalong with the durationof the trip — rising 18percent for every twohours of any type oftravel, and by 26 percentfor every two hours ofair travel.

But while the currentfindings confirm thetravel-VTE link, lead re-searcher Dr DivayChandra of the HarvardSchool of Public Healthin Boston said “there isno reason for panic” be-cause the absolute risk toany one traveler is stilllow.

Still, Chandra said,“people who travel longdistances should beaware of the risk of bloodclots and learn to recog-nize the symptoms.”

The clotting is alsoknown as deep veinthrombosis. Symptomsinclude swelling, painand redness in the leg.

NEW YORK, 7 July —Anew study highlights theimportance of good long-term control of bloodsugar in people with dia-betes.

The study found thatpoor long-term bloodsugar control in diabeticsis associated with a sub-stantial increase in the riskof dying from ischemicheart disease — the typeof heart disease character-ized by restricted bloodflow to the arteries of theheart. However, with rea-sonably good blood sugaror “glycemic” control, therisk of death fromischemic heart disease iscomparable to that seen in

people without diabetes,the researchers found.

“Due to these findings, good glycemic control inpersons with newly diag-nosed diabetes should berecommended,” Dr Ane CDale, from the NorwegianUniversity of Science andTechnology in Tron-dheim, told ReutersHealth. “In addition, it isnecessary to control othercardiovascular risk factorsproperly.”

In a 20-year follow upstudy, Dale and colleaguescompared death rates fromischemic heart disease in205 patients newly diag-nosed with diabetes and205 matched subjects

without diabetes at the out-set.

The researchers reportin the European HeartJournal that diabetic pa-tients had nearly a two-fold greater risk of dyingcompared to nondiabeticpatients.

The risk for death fromischemic heart disease wasfour times higher in dia-betic subjects with poorlong-term blood sugarcontrol compared to thecontrol group, whereas indiabetes patients with“reasonably good” bloodsugar control the risk wasalmost the same as in sub-jects without diabetes,Dale said.—Internet

GEESTHACHT, 7 July— For 20 years, children from asmall rural northern German region — where AlfredNobel invented dynamite — have been contractingleukemia at a higher rate than anywhere else in theworld and no one knows exactly why.

Nineteen cases of leukemia among children under15 have been recorded since 1989 in the region ofElbmarsch, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) from thecity of Hamburg, three or four times the average rate.

“Such a high rate of leukemia is unique in theworld,” according to Hayo Dieckmann, a health offi-cial in the nearby town of Lueneburg who is also amedical doctor.

Authorities in this area, which bills itself as a cen-tre for energy and scientific research, have carried outvarious studies and tests but failed to come up withconclusive results accepted by all parties as to why itshould be a leukemia hotspot.

Campaigners, however, point out that within twokilometres of the region lie the Kruemmel nuclearpower station and the GKSS scientific research cen-tre, both of which they believe are to blame for theleukemia outbreaks.

France, Brazil urge greaterrole for labour body

PARIS, 7 July—France and Brazil urged a biggerrole for the International Labour Organization in areshaped global economic system that would also seemore influence given to developing countries in theUnited Nations Security Council.

“Everywhere in the world, employees are askingfor more justice, more security. They must be heard,”French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Braziliancounterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said in a jointcolumn published in France’s Liberation daily andBrazil’s Folha de Sao Paulo on Tuesday.
