OCO/GOSAT white paperMain purposes:
1) Brief UK community on status of OCO and GOSAT and associated activities
2) Match gaps in current OCO/GOSAT science plan with strengths of UK science community
3) Put forward research recommendations to fill gaps
4) Outline a coherent research programme in support of OCO and GOSAT
Text based on Lake District meeting in October 2007

UK has a role to play in most aspects of OCO/GOSAT
UK Workplan for OCO/GOSAT, Carbonfusion
White paper science recommendations
1) Build on UK FTS strengths to establish FTS measurements at one or more sites within the UK and possibly at the NERC-funded Cape Verde atmospheric observatory
2) Integrate OCO and GOSAT cal/val in NCAS activities and identify EU-wide opportunities (EUFAR)
3) Develop an atmospheric transport simulation capability to support OCO and GOSAT.
4) Establish (or help develop) a NRT nested-grid simulation of CO2 mole fraction and column over Europe that complements the US CarbonTracker [consortium bid?]
5) Establish a programme to improve CO2 source attribution using co-emitted trace gases and complementary EO products (NCEO C and Atmospheric Composition Themes).

6) Establish a clear link between atmospheric transport modelling and the surface and ocean flux modelling activities in NCEO and elsewhere.
7) Establish a DA working group to consider (a) model error; (b) error covariance for successive measurements and different species; (c) compare DA techniques.
8) Identify funding stream for ongoing OCO and GOSAT DA work.
9) Develop UK expert group: access data, detailed knowledge of data properties (error characteristics)
